My first and last Seiko was 35 years ago. I brought the Khaki Land Tortoise a few days ago. Your review is spot on. Changed the strap straight away. Your reviews are practical, down to earth, no flexing. Your mods are bonus galore. Well done. 👏
I've seen a lot of comments on the stiffness of the strap and the watch standing proud or crushing your wrist - my wife got me one a couple of months ago for my birthday and I've worn it every day since. I was going to swap the strap out immediately for a NATO strap, but my wife kicked up a stink, so I held off. Happily, I can confirm that the strap actually softens up and "weathers in", so it's not actually an issue long term.
Being a mountaineer that lives in West Virginia I needed a replacement for my 007. I think I made the right choice. It's a tough go anywhere timepiece That should last me just as long as my 007. BTW My 007 is 21 years old. Father time just caught up with it.
@@EscapementWatch My dad bought me that watch before I joined the service. It has been all over the world a few times. The only issue I'm having is it's losing about 5 minutes a week. I know that ain't too bad for a automatic but it was a lot better than that at one time. But I will get a serviced and put it away. In the meantime I'm enjoying my new Seiko field watch only James Bond NATO.
That's pretty much perfection, right... I mean, as a watch for "EDC", this would work so well.. especially in outdoor jobs. I feel like that strap will form to the wrist really well in the high heat.
I don't know which one to get first, the Seiko SRPG15J1 or the Seiko SRPG05K1. I love the look of each, and both are right for my wrist size. But I am leaning towards the 15J1. I love the simplicity of the dial, the color is beautiful, the movement is a workhorse for Seiko, the list goes on. The strap color and fabric choice is what also makes me love this one. I get it, it's stiff, but I'm okay with that. I want to own this watch for the long haul. Not just wear it once or twice and retire it. Lol. Which is why I'm not in a rush to own them both. I already have 2 watches that already get my attention, which makes me also not feel so rushed to jump in.
Great watch. The hate the strap gets makes little sense to me. I worked the strap for about 5-10 minutes when I first got the watch, and it became more than sufficiently supple. Remarks like “it’s gonna take a year to break in” just aren’t based in reality. Maybe it was intended to be hyperbole? Anyway, it’s honestly a very nice strap.
Thank you for the review!! Excellent white chapter ring with the dark blue dial! 4:30 date is awesome for me. Maybe it is just my eyes, but I find the rectangular hour markers and the long straight minute hand (on the land-turtle) (and easily differentiable hands) much easier to read than the ~hour-glass shaped normal turtle minute hand. Or rather, the Land-Turtle is very clear and readable for me vs. the not easy to read vanilla turtle. I love the standard-turtle as one of the greatest designs ever...but the pinched minute hand disappears for me at some angles and when lume fades at night (...which leaves a great diver...with an invisible minute hand...heartbreaker. So close...but not viable.) This watch with a lume pip at North would be a must bye. (and a GMT hand...oooo) (they should totally make that smiley face turtle...)
Thanks ! The very video I was looking for ! Tried the blue tortoise yesterday in the metal, lovin'it ! I would need to see/try the Willard too though...
These are going to be great everyday wears. I wonder if Seiko are going to use this case for a dive watch or are we just going to change bezel inserts?
I had missed that this one came with sapphire. It makes me wonder all the more why Seiko couldn't include sapphire in the SZSB012, SZSB013, etc. models that were release with US$550 MSRP price points.
a mystery but could be because this one is flat sapphire with no AR so its relatively cheap for seiko. Adding double dome or boxed sapphire is a tad more expensive and seiko is so calculated with their finishing and material use.
Comparing mine to the padi turtle, the lines are indeed sharper and more refined as well as the circular brushing on the tortois. The finishing on the bezel is also more refined on the tortois. Size took a little while to adjust to as it wears much smaller than the turtle but classic design and ultra comfortable
Thank you for your review. This model is for me redundant. Willard is so much more interesting, unique and manly. This color variant has too many colors on it - silver, white, black, blue, beige.
Just speculating, maybe Seiko is trying to create a turtle version of the hiker's Alpinist, like the Alpinist with the compass bezel. If North was lumed here, arguably it could function like a timer since with nearly all Seiko divers in the dark all you see of the timer is the pip anyway. ...If only there were a clean way to combine the compass markings with timer markings, that would be super useful. ...and a GMT hand of course would be great for the compass function...
its basically black to normal eyes most of the time unless bright studio lights and sun I imagine? its been raining and will rain all week here. gloomy weather!
Hello!. Good review......anyway I miss a frame in Seiko Willard date window.......Why not?....and I am not a fan of the X in all dials....for me it is a bit off.....New subscriber. Cheers!.
@@EscapementWatch Seiko SLA033 has got the frame and no X and looks beautiful.....ok it is a much more expensive watch....anyway both are great watches.....thanks for your previous reply!.
Thanks for the review and comparison. I got the black dial one with the black leather. Is there an available after-market bracelet that would fit on the tortoise? I can’t seem to find one. Thank you!
The specs are bang on! What I don’t like is the silly compass bezel👎 nobody’s going to use that or even know how. Also for over 500 bucks seiko better switch to the 6r or people like me will go with a Swiss watch that uses a SW200 for that price range. Seiko is trying to be mr big time with higher prices and all they are doing by keeping the same movement that’s in their 200 dollar watches is losing customers. So as you can tell I would almost certainly buy this watch if it were 350 which is what it should cost as it sits. I might pay 550 if it had the 6r. Too bad seiko you lost at least 1 sale. Keep trying🙏
As a hiker and backpacker, I prefer a compass over the typical diver seen on almost every Seiko. To reverse your words...nobody is going to use a diver bevel or even know how 🙂

Which type of strap you change for this watch ?
Can you put on metal bracelet like jubilee or olyster?

Love the date there. Way better than messing with the hour markers. I think it is visually cool that the date sort of hides in that position.

The strap is very stiff but it takes but a day or two to break in. so I recommend keeping it.
Agreed. It took about 10 minutes of working it to get it broken in nicely. I think people give up too easy.

What watch are you wearing? In this vid?
What a watch...The looks, and for me the sapphire is a real plus. The black blue bezel, does it scratch easy?
I'm considering the Tortoise. But that compass bezel is killing me. What's the point?
I totally agree. Seiko, please make a “diver version” of this watch with a proper 60 minute timer bezel.

Do you think it wears more comfortable because its thinner so it sits closer to the wrist?
Another great video FT! I like the green one better...
I think that's the correct choice!
It would be amazing if it has the same "real compass" inside the crystal like alpinist does. Bezel with direction sign is kind of useless
There's a way to use it with the hands to get the direction

Same. Not sure I never tried it.
Get rid of the compass bezel and add a bracelet and then they will have my attention.
Some are calling it the "new mini turtle". I am really interested in how it compares to the original mini turtle!
This is the true mini turtle instead of the SRPC series.

Do you still need the hand wind them even though they're automatic?
If it comes to a dead stop give it 10-20 winds. Let the rotor top it up. If you've been wearing it. No need to wind it. Just wear it everyday.
