Yup, this ☝️ Mine is one of only two homages that are left in the collection. A great too-good-to-be-a-beater beater. Toying with the idea to mod it a little this year - aluminium bezel, perhaps a repro Seiko dial. Awesome basis to try this for the first time.
I have the SD1970, there are several dial options. You can get it without the logo, which I did. I also own the SPB153. No comparison in quality. The Seiko is really nice, but it should be for the price difference.
While it is true that the US Armed Services general service (GS) watch was meant to be disposable, the bigger issue was that they were in chronic short supply. This meant that they were readily available to officers and pilots, but very difficult for an enlisted serviceman to acquire. Seiko and others filled the gap with watches built to a higher spec and to a more robust standard which were purchased at PX's by active servicemen during the Vietnam conflict.
I absolutely love mine, I've owned the green version for around 5 months now. I call mine the Seiko Rafer, after finding out that Richard Harris wore the original as Captain Rafer Janders In the awesome Movie The Wild Geese. Amazing watch.
Great video. Plenty of chuckles in it. I agree it’s a bit pricey at full RRP but with a discount it’s worth it. I think it’s a great pairing with your BB58, 2 divers that fit 2 different purposes (that’s how I’d treat them anyway!).

I have the SteelDive version and it is certainly a great watch, but the dial on the Seiko is significantly classier looking. My next watch will either be this or the 62Mas. "What the wife said" is brilliant. :)

Just saying that if you pop in a store today you may get one of the last couple. They are available in green for £550 🎉😢 offer not available online
I was a bit disappointed with mine losing 10 seconds a day which remained consistent over a month. So I took the bull by the horns and regulated it and she now runs about +8 seconds a week. Mines the same watch with black dial and metal bracelet. I do have the dreaded bezel alignment issue but it's very minor and after a while you just forget about it. Great watch.
Awesome show for a legendary watch MWC! That Uncle Seiko bracelet is a game changer too 😍 I said the same after watching Gordon from Illuminating Watches video on his Willard that it’s amazing how much of that classic Seiko dive watch DNA is right there in this model. Cushion case, 4 o’clock crown etc. A timeless bit of design.
Spot on brother! Just wanted to add the other watch most famous in Vietnam especially those in the special forces branch was a Tudor Submariner. Had a few family members in that conflict and two on special operations. One of them still has his Tudor and believe it or not still wears it today. Love your Willard.
I picked one of these up about a month after they launched and pretty much came to the exact same conclusions. Not to crazy about the strap and swapped it out for a waffle from uncle Seiko and a hook strap. I also paid full retail but I had the funds and I don't regret it two years later. My only major gripe is the movement. Not in its function but in its accuracy. I'm usually pretty lucky with Seikos. My previous two have been at cosc or close to it. Not so with my Willard I don't have a time graph but comparing it to my phone it's running at about +30 a day. Overall it's a fantastic watch and a great do it all diver that you can dress up or down. But the alkalis heel as with all Seikos is movement accuracy.
superb review! 👍🏼 every collection needs a seiko diver. 😎 just like you i picked the willard because it has got everything a true stunner below 1000 € needs (and i agree that 700-800 € would be a more reasonable price, but we‘d buy the watch anyway, wouldn’t we? 😃). will definitely be a keeper in my collection too. 🤩

That was a fun watch! I’ve been deliberating with this one for a few months now, but finally bit the bullet and it should be arriving in a couple of days. Looks like they have sorted out the QC issues Really nice watch and a Seiko I would consider buying Great review 👍🍻
Seriously considering one of these, especially if I can get one for under £900, there is one second hand on ebay right now for £699 but kind of want it brand new.
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR I’ve had some great deals through both of them before so always keep an eye on them. Got the polished no date Lunar Pilot last Christmas through HSamuel for peanuts and a Tissot Visodate from Ernest Jones a few years prior with over £100 of the ticket price.
So many chuckles watching this one 😂 You really are a bit mad (in a fantastically creative way)! A grand seems a bit steep though. I don’t think it’s any better quality than my Samurai Save the Ocean Dark Manta which is half the price?
0:43 Ha! Also, at 4:05 you reminded me of TGV with your open box reaction. 😄 Love all your creativity that goes into your videos. You’re outta control, Madman! That’s what sets you apart from the rest. Keep it up!
Okay, great video, just found you and subscribed. I have a couple of Seiko's, want to make it 3 by the end of 2022 (want that Prospex Save the Ocean or the one with the penguin feet) last Seiko i purchased was the baby ice monster. Laughed really hard at the Pagani part (yeah, I have a couple of those too). I really liked the style of the video, made me laugh a lot. Look forward to the next one dude.
Coor,, Cushion cased! Just back from Nam an finking of taking the Demolition Gig Up North? Or Surfing Indonesia for the next few Decades. PS: Great review Young Chum!
I just picked one up last week. I have a few minor complaints (bezel alignment, not overly accurate, the metal keeper is really uncomfortable). But overall, I love it! It hasn’t left my wrist. I agree regarding the price. If you can get 25%+ off, I feel it’s worth it.
It’s crazy how the name ‘Seiko’ has an impact… any other brand ( from budget to luxury) would crucified for qc problem… but Seiko gets a ‘oh that’s a Quirk of Seiko’
@@78thedaddy we live in the times of the golden calf! fanboy culture has become a norm and it is now OK to worship a productbrand. why do you think a company like Apple can have success with a business model that shits on the customer without trying to hide it? the answer to all your questions is: people are unintelligent.
Yeah the price is the killer for this one .. $1,000 ... that is more expensive than Swiss Hamilton, Swiss Tissot and bordering on Christopher Ward, DOXA 300 and Rado Captain Cook territory.
These videos keep getting better- well done. Looks great, but in that price range for Seiko divers I prefer my spb143, which is the watch I would keep if for some horrible reason I had to have a one watch collection 😎😜
Definitely a beauty, the green one has stunning dial, i was sure about buying one so i got a steel dive first and recently tried a seiko and scored a great deal :)
Great video. I really like the watch. I’m torn between the Willard and the king turtle. I’m going to try both on this weekend hopefully and see any differences. I know there is a significant price difference between the two. The one thing that bothers me with the Willard is the bad accuracy spec. The other thing that bothers me with Seiko in general is their terrible Q&A.
It’s a fair point Gary, couple of days after shooting it went back on the timegrapher and the movement had a beat error of 0.2! Like a lot of Seiko Engines you gotta get them out in the open road and worn for 2/3 days straight!
I love this watch. I simply wish it had a slightly better movement. For example, the excellent 8L from the MM300 model, with the 28,000 beat rate and tighter accuracy. Otherwise, this is one of my favorite wearing watches.
Fantastic review. It's real beauty. Green was a good choice!! I do prefer the bigger power reserve as I change watch a fair bit so 70 hours is very handy, preferable to 28,800 and less reserve. The price is a bit high. I would definitely wait for a discount.
I own the 143 which i really love. The 153 you have is definitely a looker but i just worry about its size. I'm not sure it would sit nearly as comfortably on the wrist as its smaller sibling. In any case loved your review. It's given me much food for thought.
I´m stuck between the Willard and the Prospex diver. Regarding WatchCrunch a guy recently wrote the follwing : I have the Submariner date 126613LN New, 2022, from an AD, never worn, with box an warranty. In your opinion is better to sell it asap or it is destined to increase the cost and it is better I save it for the future? Now here is my question : is this a watch nerd or what is this ? and now I ask myself is this the right platform for a guy who cares for watches a lot and for speculation.......................not at all !
However you look at it Rolex watches are thought of differently than any other brand on the planet!!!! Watches are to be bought, worn, made memories with and stay with you to do a job it was made to do ;)
Did you consider going the mod route with this one as you this with the 62mas? I feel the exact same as you about paying £1000 for a watch with a 3hz movement and alignment issues
Russ, if I may say, your video production & editing is absolutely next level! The cuts, colour changes & re-focuses every few seconds really help break-up what would otherwise be just a single shot of talking. Great stuff- enjoy your content! 👏🏻 As for the watch, sorry man, I’m not keen on the bulky, odd shape case (I know it makes the watch what it is!) Prefer my SBP143 👍
Yes Yes the green is great ! but the Willard with faux patina pull the switch for me. The difference of finish against my made in japan Turtlle is huge!! You said it right the bezel is strange... great intro by the way.
Got the black one, love it... actually prefer it to my SM300 😱...may well get the green one too. Paid £700 for mine, worth every penny imho. Great video thank you 👍🏻👍🏻
Well I've never owned a turtle , but I love the Willard case shape. I prefer the 62mas overall , so I've got a spb051, and just acquired a sla043. The 051 was one of the first higher tier divers reissues , and it cost me £675 used. The sla is another level and cost over 4k new. Again I managed to pick one up on eBay for 2.4k , and it's just gorgeous. I will never sell either . I'm tempted to get a sla version of this but I'm supposed to be cutting down !!! Delighted you love it Russ.
Had my eye on this watch since TGV did a video on it a few months ago. His ran fine with just a few seconds deviation but Jody's on JOMW was way off. Yours seems OK but it seems a lottery on whether you get a good one. Not so much a problem sub £500 but an issue at £1k...
Bought this exact watch two weeks ago. I ordered the blue 55th anniversary one on bracelet in store too, loved both but the green one spoke to me more. Can't have two green Seikos so I've since sold my sarb017 😭. Loved that watch too but... Had to go. Might buy another alpinist in different colour. They do a lovely brown one. And they have a really nice cream one too.
Great review. I have a similar variant - the SPB237J1. It's currently one of my favorite Seikos. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that image on the back of Seiko divers is not really depicting the famous Great Wave Off Kanegawa, but rather an unrelated generic tsunami logo.

@7:37 watch crunch?!!? never heard of it! this is awesome!! singing up now.
Seriously considering one of these, especially if I can get one for under £900, there is one second hand on ebay right now for £699 but kind of want it brand new.
I hear you my friend! If your from the UK keep to HSamuel and Ernest Jones when a wait for another discount drop !;)
Really helpful, fun and attractive review man! ❤
So many chuckles watching this one 😂 You really are a bit mad (in a fantastically creative way)! A grand seems a bit steep though. I don’t think it’s any better quality than my Samurai Save the Ocean Dark Manta which is half the price?
That save the ocean one is lovely!! Thanks for the support my friend!
Russ you really deserve more subs!
Great review Russ and I totally agree with your observations mate....
Cheers Felo!!!!!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR back at you my friend 👍
0:43 Ha! Also, at 4:05 you reminded me of TGV with your open box reaction. 😄
Love all your creativity that goes into your videos.
Beautiful! But yeah, too expensive. Another great video Russell!
I hear you my friend!!!
Suggest me a first Casio diver as I currently need one to time patrolling in my job and rest times during exerciseing
Give me your budget my friend?

PS: Great review Young Chum!
I just picked one up last week. I have a few minor complaints (bezel alignment, not overly accurate, the metal keeper is really uncomfortable). But overall, I love it! It hasn’t left my wrist. I agree regarding the price. If you can get 25%+ off, I feel it’s worth it.
Other than that.....🥺
haha stinky taste!
If a bezel was misaligned I so would’ve taken it back and asked for a replacement as that is NOT on!;)
It’s crazy how the name ‘Seiko’ has an impact… any other brand ( from budget to luxury) would crucified for qc problem… but Seiko gets a ‘oh that’s a Quirk of Seiko’
@@78thedaddy we live in the times of the golden calf! fanboy culture has become a norm and it is now OK to worship a productbrand. why do you think a company like Apple can have success with a business model that shits on the customer without trying to hide it?
the answer to all your questions is: people are unintelligent.
Hey russ , do you think this would work on a 6.25 inch wrist ? . Great review as always .
100% my friend! It’s like 46 lug to lug? It’ll still beautifully
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR thanks mate
Yeah the price is the killer for this one .. $1,000 ... that is more expensive than Swiss Hamilton, Swiss Tissot and bordering on Christopher Ward, DOXA 300 and Rado Captain Cook territory.
Great review! I'm normally not a Willard fan, but I'm starting to warmup to them, and your review is a big part of it.
Cheerio!
Great review, love the watch and as you rightly said it wears so well
I love it Russ!!! Cheers!
That Uncle Seiko bracket is 🤩🤩🤩 😍😍😍. It’s amazing!!!!
These videos keep getting better- well done. Looks great, but in that price range for Seiko divers I prefer my spb143, which is the watch I would keep if for some horrible reason I had to have a one watch collection 😎😜
Thank you so much my friend! My enthusiasm to always improve is almost level with my watch addiction!!!!
Your reviews are so informative and hilarious at the same time. This should be a 1 million subscriber channel!
Daniel!!!! You are very kind! Thank you for your support!!
Great episode!🙌🏽 & honored to be included in the Seiko showcase🍾
You are more than welcome man! I love that monster!!!
Great review and top video editing. Would be great (more realistic?) to see the watch on the timing machine in the crown-down position.
"Nipplenuts"? Oh damn, you made me laugh out loud again. Few people can do that. Fabulous intro! Thanks for a the smile I'm still enjoying! 😂
Thanks Trevor!!!!! If I can do that every episode my work is done !!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR On top of that, it was a great review too! And by the way, we have the same wrist size, you lady-boy, you ;)
I love this watch. I simply wish it had a slightly better movement. For example, the excellent 8L from the MM300 model, with the 28,000 beat rate and tighter accuracy. Otherwise, this is one of my favorite wearing watches.
Completely agree my friend
ahhh it's not that it's bAAd; it's simply not regulated from Seiko... a 5 min regulation from your jeweler will make it a great movement.😊
Fantastic review. It's real beauty. Green was a good choice!! I do prefer the bigger power reserve as I change watch a fair bit so 70 hours is very handy, preferable to 28,800 and less reserve. The price is a bit high. I would definitely wait for a discount.
What do you think of the King Turtle?
Great!
I own the 143 which i really love. The 153 you have is definitely a looker but i just worry about its size. I'm not sure it would sit nearly as comfortably on the wrist as its smaller sibling. In any case loved your review. It's given me much food for thought.
Stephen! Thanks for watching my friend!
I have an earlier model from when it was first introduced, minus lume at 3 o'clock.
Watches are to be bought, worn, made memories with and stay with you to do a job it was made to do ;)
Great stuff man! Love the Willard
Cheers Gordon!
Just got mine straight from Japan. It’s glued to my wrist
Martin really appreciate the comment and the support! Yes it’s not for everyone this case!!
Yes Yes the green is great ! but the Willard with faux patina pull the switch for me. The difference of finish against my made in japan Turtlle is huge!! You said it right the bezel is strange... great intro by the way.
If you like that green you should take a look at the Seiko Land Tortoise. The case of a mini Turtle, and it has a compass bezel.
Got the black one, love it... actually prefer it to my SM300 😱...may well get the green one too. Paid £700 for mine, worth every penny imho.
Great video thank you 👍🏻👍🏻
Oooooo bold statement but great one!!;) all the best
Definitely on my to get at some point list.
I really love my SPB183. The blue Willard
Ooooo yes very nice my friend!!!
