A year with the Seiko SPB151 Willard. (SBDC109)

  • I'm back in Bimini, Bahamas with Willard and the Black Bay Pro. The last time I was here I was testing out my new Willard and now going a bit over a year on I find out that it hasn't lost its step.
    I am a huge fan of my Black Bay Pro and truthfully thought I wouldn't be wearing the Willard since the BBpro is such a great all-around (dare I say) one-watch collection.
    But no, I actually found myself wearing the Willard about 80% of the time. The rest was taken by the BBpro strictly at night when one had to 'dress up" for the occasion.
    So in conclusion... the Willard has held its own and will be remaining a permanent fixture in my watch collection.
    Enjoy the video!

    This is an excellent review of a very cool watch. In fact you motivated me to find one, and buy the 7 friends watch band. It's a terrific combo, and I very much enjoy wearing it. Your HD views were helpful, and details concerning the specs were what I needed to put me over the top. This is not a watch you can go to an Ad and try on before you buy due to its current age. Although your video allows one the vantage to feel like they're trying it on and applying it to whatever circumstances they have. I appreciate your reviews for your common sense approach on commentary, not trying to sell anything you don't substantiate, and wonderful sense of style that is sympathetic to my own. I believe that you have an excellent future in your watch reviewing future, and keep up the good work. You're a wonderful asset to anyone considering any particular model that you're looking at. Many thanks-

    Your BB Pro is a real stunner, I must say. My Christopher Ward C63 Sealander is very close in specs and build as your Tudor, with the exception of it not being a “true GMT,” but an office GMT. As for your Capt. Willard, I anticipate on picking one up sometime this year. I already own several Seikos, including a PADI Turtle. Thanks for pushing me closer to that goal (much to the chagrin of my wife!). Great presentation of the Willard in its natural environment!

I have yet to take it off, very comfortable and I don't see myself ever taking it off the Z199. I'll be doing a short video on this bracelet in the coming weeks. Enjoy your Willard... and if you find its a bit fast buy a de-magnetizer... the movement can be affected easily by magnetism... in fact mine was running very fast, I ran it through the de-magnetizer and back to plus 4 to 7 a day.

    • @RobertBlanchard
      @RobertBlanchard  Год назад +2

      I was actually excited for the SLA051 until I put one on. Don't get me wrong its beautiful, but 2 major things bother me (bother me as in I'll see them every time I look at the watch) about the watch. The date window placement and the stepped case. For that money I rather save a bit more cash and buy the SLA033 (which I find to big) and would end up buying the best example for the original which I wouldn't wear since I would be to nervous to beat up a piece of history and all the above leads us back to the SPB151 (Japan market)... the perfect Willard for the 21st century... well almost perfect... Boy I wish Seiko would throw the 8L35 movement in one... But I am very happy with 6R35 which actually has kept excellent time!

    • @RobertBlanchard
      @RobertBlanchard  7 месяцев назад

      Yeah, they are opposite sides of what I want out of a watch.
      Currently I now have my Willard on the Uncle straps tropic and I’m keeping it like that. It just feels so nostalgic. And the fact that my dad had one in Vietnam just makes me feel right when I wear it.
      And now the BB is on the bracelet, but every time I look down at it I don’t feel nostalgic… I feel adventurous… as if it wants me to use it as a tool in an adventure.
      Both are amazing and both now take up equal time on the wrist.
      I have found two watches that will be forever in my collection.

      @RobertBlanchard  Год назад

      Hello, thanks for the praise! As for the accuracy, mine is a SPB151 (Japanese market version) and on the time grapher it runs +5 -5 on average so it keeps really good time.
      Try setting it on top of a compass and see if the compass needle moves… if it does it’s magnetize… you can buy a demagnetizer on Amazon/eBay for around 20 dollars… well worth it since I have used mine a few times already…. Or if you know a watch repair place that’ll do it for free try that out.

      @RobertBlanchard  Год назад

      This is the third time I start writing this! Hopefully I don’t get another call.
      The Uncle Seiko z199 has transformed the look and feel of my Willard.
      It is back to being my daily! And I bought a BBPro 2 months ago… granted it’s on a rubber strap… but if it was on the SS bracelet it would be another story.
      Anywho, back to the z199. Probably the best bracelet design I have ever used… all the class of the jubilee without the thickness… and man is it comfortable!
      Any issues with it? Excluding the fact that it doesn’t have a divers extension… it’s perfect.
      The clasp is good and personally I don’t need a divers extension (warm waters year round in south Florida, so no need for wetsuit) but if you live on the west coast and truly use your watch as a tool in the water… then you’ll need the divers extension.
      I don’t see myself ever taking it off this bracelet.
      In conclusion… worth ever penny to me. (Actually thinking of getting another for my srp777)

      The original is a perfect design save for the fact that the crown was its weak point. For me the size reduction is welcomed design move to fit in todays environments.
      That said I have worn both and the original is 100% a tool with a purpose but nothing else.
      The new Willard design allows it to be a chameleon lending itself to being a tool yet have the ability to pass when wearing a suit.
      That said I have recently modded my Willard with the ‘thin case back’ from namoki mods. And now it wears (comfort wise) much more like the original. And it also drops the overall thickness down below 13 mm. It’s a game changer.
      Check out my last video on the thin caseback.
      She is now ‘rated’ at 150M instead of 200M but since I have never dove below 90 feet I’m not worried.
      Worth every penny to do this mod.

    • @RobertBlanchard
      @RobertBlanchard  Год назад +2

      Well, what I am trying to convey is that there are other watches that would work better in a suit environment. But in a pinch and if you don’t have another watch it’ll be fine… but between the BBPro and the Willard and even though the BBpro is ‘thicker’ it still ‘fit’ better under a cuff.
      But apart from that if the Willard was my only watch I’d be happy to wear it with a Tux😁
