Steele is the most complete pitcher, this year at least. Snell walks too many guys and pitches too few innings, Strider is inconsistent, and Webb and Gallen just aren’t as good as Steele.
Even as a Red Sox fan, Porcello had absolutely no business winning that award. Those 22 wins were a result of him having the best run support in the AL more than anything else. And that snub inadvertently led to Cole getting robbed in 2019.
Nolan Ryan was every bit one of the best NL pitchers the year he went 8-16. His 2.76 led the league as did his 270 K's and his WHIP was 3rd best. Not bad for a 40-year old on a 76-86 team w/ poor offense.
Right now Justin Steele is leading the MLB in era. He is tied for the most wins in MLB. He has the 3rd most quality starts in the mlb. He deserves the cy young. Snell has the most walks in the MLB and his whip is horrendous. Without Justin Steele the cubs aren’t in the playoffs. I don’t think there is an argument against Justin Steele for the CY young
I might be a bit biased but I think gallen does still have strong contention if he doesn't throw away his last few starts, Steele has like 160 innings compared to his around 190 and I think the 200 ip mark might be the x factor
Yes there is. Snell’s era is currently better, has way more strikeouts, and has a .187 OBA while Steeles is horrendous at .242 the only thing Steele has on snell is WHIP and wins. That is not enough to win a CY young….
Interesting side note about Cuellar. I know being a 20 game winner is not a thing anymore, but Mike Cuellar was part of an interesting situation in 1971 (not his CY Young season). The Orioles rotation had 4 20-game winners that year (Cuellar, Dave McNally, Jim Palmer, & Pat Dobson). Only the 1920 White Sox can say that. Of course, 2 members of that staff never pitched again after 1920 because the were banned because of the Black Sox scandal.
I think that Steele is gonna be the Cy Young. His numbers are fantastic, but more than that, he's been pretty consistent all season. You're getting quality starts almost every time, giving the Cubs chances to win. Either way, this and the MVP race are giving us a meal with discussions. Baseball is in a good place
Snells wins and walks don’t matter, because his walks usually don’t turn into runs because he has the lowest era and his wins aren’t his fault. The padres offense is just terrible.
@@tractorcannon8487 I agree about the wins. Snell has been terrific but his hitters don't help him out at all. his walks are a different story tho, but i see what you mean. his walks don't matter cause they don't turn into runs
@@chuggaroo He is, better ERA than Strider and Gallen. Better SO/9 than Gallen, Steele. Better FIP than Snell. Better/Same HR/9 as Snell, Strider, Gallen. And finally a better ERA+ than Strider, Gallen. So yeah he is pretty clearly the number 3 guy to me. I'd say the thing that hurts him the most is his BB/9.
Moral of the story: Verlander has earned about 72 trillion dollars throwing a baseball. I doubt he gives a crap about awards but would prefer not to be known as the guy who's gone 1-6 5.63 in the World Series despite his regular season success.
It'll be close next year when Joe Blow goes 7-8 in 38 starts w/ an ERA of 2.76 vs. Tom Shmucklehead and his 39 saves and 1.57 ERA across a whopping 36 innings. Remember when you had to WIN some games vs. having made-up WAR stats to smoke-mirror your stats?
Strider should not be in CY contention, when you have a 6 and 7 ERA in NDs and Ls I don't care how many Ks you get. Strikeouts and theoretical runs are not as important as real runs.
Blake Snell has over 5 walks per 9 and is well on his way to leading the MLB with 100 walks this season. Saying that deserves a cy young is like saying Kyle Schwarber is having an MVP season.
@@glusur76 it costs him pitches and therefore innings. Yes it’s impressive that he allows so many runners without letting them score, but is that really as impressive as the guy that just allows less runners?
Strider got Ks, Snell got more war than them all, Webb got the innings, and Steele got the ERA, ERA+, and wins but lacks innings though. Honestly, I go for Steele.
Who’s your pick?🍿

Justin Steele. GO CUBBIES!!

@@rdjmario3627as a dbacks fan, Steele deserves it
Snell should win it because he has the lower ERA
Verlander had a strong case for winning of winning Cy young in 2012, 2016, and 2018. Mike Trout level award finishing.
Exactly why I personally consider Verlander the best pitcher of the generation.
As a tigers fan… 2:49 hurt me 😂😂
Edit: 3:29 also 😭
Only correction is that Felix Hernandez broke the barrier of W-L record
For real. Those mariner teams were hard to watch.

Porcello had some business winning that award…but not as much as Verlander
2:20 king Felix had already started removing the stigma of not having many wins in 2010
That’s exactly what I first thought of as well. 2016 was already an aberration.
Soon as i heard it i thought the same thing, didn't King Felix win a CY with like 13 wins several years before Degrom?

13-12 record, iirc

Adam Wainwright has the Cy Young award all locked up! The others need not apply 🤣
The only thing Justin Steele currently has on Blake snell is WHIP and Wins, that is not enough to win a CY young. At least it shouldn’t be enough.

Verlander absolutely should have won in 2016. Don’t get me wrong, his career accomplishments are ridiculous. But, that should have also been in there.

Kodai senga has entered the chat. Don't think he will win but he should Garner votes.
If Spencer can get his era down by 1 which is pretty much impossible he would win

Justin Steele for Cy Young. All of his stats have already been mentioned, so I'll just leave it at that.
