I agree with this. I’m not vegan, not even vegetarian, but pescatarian. Or maybe there’s another name for what I am that I don’t know. Flexitarian? I only say pescatarian because I eat salmon very infrequently. Maybe once a month, maybe even less. I’d say 90% of my diet is either vegan or nearly vegan (I don’t always look at labels to check for animal by-products, but do check for gelatine). I get most of my protein most of the time from tofu, tempeh or beans and lentils, and as someone who does randomly eat salmon or eggs, I can’t say I notice a difference when I do. I don’t feel better on days I eat salmon, and I also don’t feel worse.
As I understand this video, you still must mix your plants to get complete protein. But you do not have to mix animal sources to get complete protein, one source is enough. You must also consider vitamin B12 and vitamin D, found in animal sources but not really in plant sources. They did not mention that in this video.
What about intermittent fasting and performance in sports? Can distribute all my nutrition in two meals a day as a vegan and still see gains and increased agility?
Not to debate Veganism. There are 3 practical issues with plant protein. 1) While at maintenance or when eating a surplus of calories, protein needs are not as high as some suggest (circa 200 grams or more per day), in a calorie deficit, to maintain muscle you need more protein or at least more protein dense foods. Beans and nuts, spinach, brussels sprouts, mushrooms top out at 30-40% protein so if you also have some additional starches, and fruit it is hard to get a protein dense diet from whole foods only consisting of plants. Again, this is only during fat loss in a calorie deficit, say 500-1000 kcal deficit per day. Turkey and tuna top out at over 80% of their calories from protein. 2) I personally have asthmatic type sensitivities to wheat, corn starch, oats, and some beans as well as milk and nuts with skins. Even in a calorie maintenance or surplus when I might only need 90-130 grams of protein a day, most whole vegan sources of protein cause respiratory inflammation and sleep disturbance for me. I've tried to go with black beans and chickpeas and lentils, brussels sprouts, spinach, etc, but when I get more than 1-2 servings of beans I feel it. Milk is a problem too anyway, but I can find highly hydrolyzed milk protein and I can't find highly hydrolyzed plant protein. I know I can add vegan leucine which could help. The hydrolyzed proteins don't provoke respiratory issues because the proteins are broken down to di- and tri-peptides. I would love to find a hydrolyzed high leucine vegan protein supplement. 3) The hydrolyzed milk based proteins are fast absorbed which allows for amino acid levels to be spiked quickly, which is a known trigger to build muscle. The key to turning on protein synthesis is a) fast absorbing di- and tri-peptides and b) 3-5 grams leucine content every 3.5-4 hours. Slower absorbed proteins whether from plants or animals have been shown to not activate the mTorr gene. There isn't a naturally occurring plant source that is fast and high in leucine. Adding 3-4 grams of Vegan leucine every 3-4 hours to a diet that has slower, whole food plant proteins could work, but again most of them provoke sensitivities in me, and most are not protein dense enough per calorie for a calorie deficit when trying to shed bodyweight.
***As a society we NEED to get away from using animal studies to provide data for people. The paradigm is equally flawed and unethical. Studies on people who volunteer, for the sake of people, is the way to go. As both a vegan, and a veterinarian, I am dismayed by the casual use of animals for research. We need to get out of the early 20th century, and into the present, people. Thank you for the informative video. Humanity has so much to make up for in the mistreatment of the planet and those who live on it.
Just curious, but if going carnivore and using so much protein for energy, are the byproducts of breaking that protein down for energy still in the form of amino acids that can be used to build proteins? If not, then why not just get energy from plant based carbs and save the protein for building muscle and healing?

You can build muscle with literally on greens. Brooke goldner's husband is super muscular and is mainly raw vegan. And many others
Great video! Very informative.
Very informative. One thing I learned is that inner peace starts on your plate. Animals transfer their energy when you consume them. If they were treated unwell as most animal products these days are, then you are consuming that toxic energy. Great video. Thank you
I agree 100%
Agreed
Thank you so much for such valuable information. Great work.
Very helpful! Thank you
Now this is a great video! Straight to the point, showed barely any bias.
Some questions that made me think if athletes really should be doing plant base diets based on bioavailability on food if suboptimal, now I think have been answered!
This is a REALLY terrific episode! Thank you.
Great interview, thanks guys.
Loved this video! Gained some knowledge and key points to discuss with those who refuse to think you can still have gains being vegan or vegetarian. We are living and breathing examples! 💪🏾
This should be required viewing for anyone interested in building muscle on a vegan / vegetarian diet. Answers all the questions needed to erase doubt and embrace a healthier lifestyle for longevity.
Great video Nimai! This is exactly what I wanted learn about.
Good explanation! Where did you get that nice bar chart showing the 9 essential acids in various plant and animal foods? Also, what's the source of the 1.6-2.0 g/kg protein recommendation? That seems high to me.
there are studies that show there is less amino acids in the blood when using plant based protien compared to whey
This was a great video. I thought it was going to be a little biased but actually you discussed the points really well. Found your channel after watching the netflix documentary.
Hell yea man! Been loving how much you’re posting!
Greetings,
I have faithfully followed your channel for several years and have been a vegan for the past four years. I truly admire your content. I want to take this moment to convey my heartfelt appreciation for the fantastic content you create. Over the last few weeks, I've been contemplating how I can contribute more to the vegan community. As a result, I recently launched my own RUclips channel, @PurePlantHealth
I am deeply grateful for the inspiration and guidance you've provided.
Thank you immensely.
Jaro
Thank you for sharing. You vegan males have it all, COMPASSION and STRENGTH. You rock
and are an inspuration to others. Me, whole food vegan over 26 years.
This is really good information 👍. thank you
Can’t wait to hear you speak at vegan camp out in November. Wish Simon Hill was also going to be there
Really interesting video-thank you! Just to keep things on the same plain--title needs to be “plant vs animal protein” as this emphasizes the dietary classification or “Veganism-based diet vs Carnism-based diet” which highlights the ideological differences.
Great video! Very informative🙏🏾💪🏿
Simon Hill is also pretty jacked! But yeah, thanks for educating us :)
Yoooo I've been vegan for years have been in and out of the gym - bad sleep hygiene as well ; haven't made many gains. I'm now 29 and am almost done with my Bachelor's degree in Nutrition Science to become a Dietitian(Nutritionist). Will get my master's degree as well. Super stoked about discovering Simon Hill, also stoked about hearing the bioavailability difference being 10% at the very most between plant and animal proteins. I didn't believe the bioavailability difference numbers taught in my program, glad I was right.
Dope content Nimai
great stuff nimai!!
Nimai, I am your new fan !!!!
I'm vegetarian but just found you in a documentary on Netflix and I told myself "I don't need any animal product to get in shape". You are my inspirations, so far I like what you do and I have a big question. You consume around 150gr of protein each day. How do you track this ?
How can I track my protein intake by eating rice, beans and tofu?
I think it would be very helpful to make a video about this.
Thanks !!!!! ❤
Now to try and make my friends watch this video. The true challenge!
I am vegan 8 years, love this channel. Anyone have input on the carnivore diet? People who do it says it makes huge shifts in their health.
Yeah its bc they lose a lot of weight due to being in a deficit (meat is satiating)
Super helpful, to the point and fun to watch. Thanks!!
Really like this vid what a great job brotha 💪 💪
YEEEE SIMON! Really enjoyed this one!
thanks y'all. got any info on protein powders ? best tips for achieving enough protein ?
Keep the great vids coming Nimai ❤
Great video, the workout was almost a bit distracting, but that's information made simple that we can share, so mission accomplished!
Just watched this video. Excellent job!
I worked out there in the mid 80s. Glad to see its still the Mecca. I had a few workouts of Worlds Gym. Lou Ferrigno was there both times. Wish I still had those sweat shirts.
Thanks to such people we are aware that it is possible to live, eat and live better and easier!!!
Thanks for a great video, interesting stuff!
Love this new style of video Nimai!
Agree 💯 switched to plant base many moons ago and feel fantastic 🎉
I take 99% of my protein from plants and I feel amazing, just a very important clarification the protein intake is related to your lean muscle mass not your body weight.
Awesome info
one of the best videos about plant based proteins! thank you
I noticed an almost immediate improvement in endurance after switching to a mostly vegan diet.
My major takeaway is that Simon is 🦆ing yolked! 😂 I’m trying to get like y’all! 💪🏾
I need a beginners food staples to get for protein. Any suggestions l? I hate to cook also , lol. But if I can like easy prep ahead it’s ok. I can’t do animal products anymore. I’m not ok ethically with it.
I have soooooo much interest in going more plant-based.... I am trying to navigate this in a household with a very picky, meat and potatoes spouse. I was a vegetarian for some time and I DO NOT enjoy tofu so also working on figuring out what a plant-based lifestyle would look like without that. Any ideas or help would be very welcomed!
Recovered from Hodgkin Lymphoma (cancer) turn truly fully into vegetarian, i can see the noticeable changes. Sir I followed you since 6 months and if you can build that kind of physique I'll definitely, i fought a battle and i know how vegetarian foods keep my body energetic. Much love ❤❤❤
~hare krishna~ peace ✌️
God bless you 🕊
Vegetarian or vegan? There is a difference. One is the opposite of veganism.
Superior is what works best for Y-O-U. Animal protein and fat is what works best for me and my son.
This one helped me a lot because I recently became a vegan person and everyone, I mean EVERYONE that I know was like " oohhhhh you will be sick, you will be wick, start eating meat again because you will lose all of your muscles, you won't have enough or the same nutrients from plants.... 😢 I was like o my God are you for real? I eat so much legumes and tofu and veggies...and they were noooo it is not the same animal protein is what we needdd ! Meanwhile I feel better then ever...for 9 years I try to get healthy, I go visit nutritionists, I am in a diet all the time and the only thing I felt was disappointment, exhausted and like shit....I cut out all of the refined sugars, the dairy products, and eventually the meat and I lost 17 kilos in 4 months and I wasn't even hungry.... so now I have something to show of like proofs to them! ❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊thanks!!!!
What about creatine, we can only take from sintetic one ?
As I understand this video, you still must mix your plants to get complete protein. But you do not have to mix animal sources to get complete protein, one source is enough.
You must also consider vitamin B12 and vitamin D, found in animal sources but not really in plant sources. They did not mention that in this video.
Great content, thanks!
What about intermittent fasting and performance in sports? Can distribute all my nutrition in two meals a day as a vegan and still see gains and increased agility?
1.6 g/kg of protein. I'm a 160lbs female. So I need more than 100g of protein daily?
Keep crushing it Nimai💪
Inspiring!!
What do you eat when you can’t have gluten or soy?
But did Nimai get to his current bod before he turned Vegan? Now knocking on him, just genuinely curious. Thanks!

I hope you told all of them you were vegan after the question. Love Simon! ❤
Just curious, but if going carnivore and using so much protein for energy, are the byproducts of breaking that protein down for energy still in the form of amino acids that can be used to build proteins? If not, then why not just get energy from plant based carbs and save the protein for building muscle and healing?
