Top 3 Exercises to Help Straighten Your Arthritic Knee

  • Looking to improve the mobility of your arthritic knee? Wish you could get your knee straighter?
    It is possible to improve the range of motion in your arthritic knee to make activities like walking, stair climbing and sitting easier and more comfortable. The key is working the muscles that are responsible for straightening the knee which are the quadriceps. The hamstrings can also play a role in knee tightness.

    In this video you'll learn 3 exercises from Dr. Alyssa Kuhn, physical therapist and osteoarthritis specialist to help you get your knee straighter, working on a range of motion called terminal knee extension. Whether you are working after a knee replacement, have mild knee osteoarthritis or have bone on bone knee arthritis- regaining the mobility is possible with consistency.
    Kristin demonstrates each of these exercises as she does have difficulty with end range extension and continues to work on it each day. She has also been told she has bone on bone knee osteoarthritis.
    None of these movements should increase pain significantly. If they do, modify the range of motion and/or reduce the repetitions.

    Hi, my PT is having me do the first exercise you are showing, she said when you lift your heel and hold 5 seconds, your knee should be in alignment witb the opposite knee or slightly futher back, otherwise your not going to feel it in your hamstring When I first tried this my knee was coming forward when I lifted my heel and I didn't feel anything so I moved my knee back when lifting and could feel it in my hamstring, your thoughts please!

    After my total knee surgery the third exercise was one of the ones I had to do daily without a doubt it was the hardest and most painful one I had to do

    Alyssa, do these excercises help with patellofemoral pain syndrome? I have some loss of cartilage but it is so paiful 😭 the put the weight on my left knee. Your guidance is truly appreciated. 🙏

    Wow great 👍 thanks..i am in early fifties woman with same condition with addition that my right knee is overlapping my left when i keep my feet close together..meaning bend sideways ..so how do I straighten it.

    Hi, love your exercises and talks. I worked as a rehab assistant my whole life. I get the exercise thing and am pretty faithful. However I have severe R knee osteoarthritis. My problem is I have some varus deformity. I have a brace which I wear only for long walks or working outside. I can not straighten knee while bearing weight, I have excellent rom in flexion and extension when not weight bearing. Any suggestions for increasing the strength for that last little bit of knee straightening? It does affect walking and stability.

    Hi Alyssa. I have advanced arthritis in my knee and get shin pain as well. I find my knee will lock up with intense pain. Any suggestions? Thanks for all your suggestions and help.

    Please advise. I always have pain & serious flareups on my patellar after i do knee extension (straightening my knee). Did i do wrong? I straighten, contract my knee muscle & push downwards?

    I have knee locking and I'm concerned about not working. I am in no pain at the moment but I'm scared that will come eventually. Anything I can do? Is there hope for me?

    Thanks for your tips. My right knee has a slight flexion condition due to arthritis . When I stand it’s not straight and when I walk it doesn’t bend. Stays on bended position. On lock. I don’t want surgery. Scared of it. Is there a way to resolve this issue? My leg and knee looks like this. 🦵 let me know thank you
