Buying my own airplane - EASIER THAN YOU THINK. See why

  • I really want to get across that aviation, being a pilot, and buying an airplane are probably more tangible and easier than you think. I explain this in this story of how I bought my first airplane.
    I had been taking lessons in a Citabria that for logistics reasons I could not solo or get my rating in so I bought my beautiful Cessna 170a taildragger.
    Athena, My beautiful Cessna 170a, was my first solo airplane purchase.
    In this video I explain how I purchased the airplane and why it really is not so crazy to buy an airplane.
    I hope to share more aviation stories with you and in each of them I want to explain why what I have done is doable by almost anyone who has the drive and passion to do so. Please feel free to comment or ask questions down below.
    So what happened to Athena? After spending much of my money on finishing helicopter school, her engine started having mechanical issues and needed to be replaced. At the time I had just spent all my funds on helicopter school and had to sell her. BUT now I am looking to get another tail dragger but I am also focused on trying to find an aircraft (airplane or helicopter) suitable for flying around the world. Right now I have access to a couple other aircraft at very low cost though business and personal relationships and am able to build hours that way. But I still plan to get another airplane.
    My background in aviation so far:
    I am a pilot with 6,200 hours and am rated in airplanes, gliders and helicopters and have about 60 hours of aerobatic time. I am a flight instructor and instrument flight instructor in helicopters.
    I have my P2 paraglider rating and Skydive C license and have a handful of wingsuit and BASE jumps and basically just love to be in the air. I still have lots more to learn and do. As for what I have done so far, each of these things just took one step at a time, I promise, it is all doable my most anyone. And there are some many amazing aviators I meet out there whose experience makes me feel like a total novice. The key is to keep learning.

    Congrats! I just recently got my PPL. I'd love to own a plane but I often feel the costs associated with it are too much, not just purchase but annuals and hangaring too

      Congrats on your PPL. 😊 A lot depends on how many hours you intend to fly and if you need/want to build hours. If you only plan to fly a few hours a month it likely does not make economic sense, but if you plan to fly several hours a month then it can be cheaper than renting.

    Do you want to become commercial pilot?

    • @Flying_Fitness
      @Flying_Fitness  Месяц назад +1

      @melodyn6419 thanks for asking. after working as a scientist for a while (and only flying airplanes and gliders as a hobby) I ended up going up in a helicopter and loving it. I then went to helicopter school, became a flight instructor, and have since worked as a commercial pilot in that industry. In helicopters I have about 6000 hours and flew a variety of different helicopters but, despite the fact that most people liking to fly the larger helicopters, I actually went back to flying the R44 (a smaller helicopter in comparison) because I honestly enjoy it. I went from flying full time helicopters for a while, to flying as a fill in pilot (currently) and working on some other business ventures full time. I am planning to add my flight instructor rating for airplanes. But for me, so far, airplanes have always been more of a hobby. I will probably make a video about how I got involved in helicopters as an upcoming video.

    I'm closing on my first plane next week as a student pilot. I've covered the numbers 100 times, it makes economic sense vs renting... Somehow, I still feel like I'm doing something crazy!

      Awesome! Congratulations @JabariHunt. It does often seem or feel crazy but in the end, as you say, it makes sense. I think more people regret the things they didn't do vs the things they did. Have fun with the training. It would be great to hear how your training in your new airplane goes! Thanks for commenting. 😊

      @@Flying_Fitness True... I hope that stands in my case! 😆 So do you want to fly professionally, or just for fun?

    • @Flying_Fitness
      @Flying_Fitness  Месяц назад +1

      @@JabariHunt Both. I used to fly just airplanes and gliders for fun. Then I got into helicopters professionally full time. Now just part time. And of course I do still fly for fun too. Are you planning on flying professionally?

    • @JabariHunt
      @JabariHunt Месяц назад +1

      @@Flying_Fitness No, purely for the joy of aviation! Unlike you, I unfortunately didn't start in my 20s. 😆 Well, gliders in college, but not powered flight.

    • @Flying_Fitness
      @Flying_Fitness  Месяц назад +1

      @JabariHunt Awesome! That's the best reason. 😊 However, if you do ever want to get paid to fly, you certainly do not need to start in your 20s. There are professional pilots I know who started in their 40s and 50s. Though things like major airlines have forced retirements at 65, many pilot jobs in aviation are not that way. But flying just for joy is so awesome. That is great you did glider flying in college! Glider flying teaches you so much.

    22k !!! Does it have seats?

    • @Flying_Fitness
      @Flying_Fitness  Месяц назад

      Lol. Yes, 4. There were a few reasons I got such a good deal. The seller was moving to the mainland and would have to pay 8K to ship the airplane if he couldn't manage to sell. The engine was very high time. The instruments and radio were about as basic as you can get, no GPS. And a tail dragger in Hawaii has less demand because few pilots have their tail dragger endorsement in Hawaii. Additionally, the winds on the island I was on at the time are typically 20kts or more, so even the pilot who sold it to me hardly flew. I had a great instructor who had over 10,000 take offs and landings in taildraggers as a tow pilot for gliders teaching me, which is why I was able to become comfortable.
