I have to say my H501S with advanced transmitter is one awesome Quad Copter. I flew mine today down by the river with wide open range and I took it up to about 200 feet and all of a sudden a 25mph wind came and i got disorientated with the direction the thing was heading and the wind basically took my drone about a 1/2 mile away which was by now a speck and no way to steer it back. It had crossed the river and went way into the forest far upstream and i thought i had lost the drone for sure because there would be no way to cross the river to look for it but i flipped the Return To Home switch and prayed it would work. it came right back and hovered above my head. Whooooooo....Relief! The transmitter range is fantastic! Also if the video will not record make sure to format it in Fat32 and not EXFAT.
Yes - well done review. Finally someone is posting who has read the manual and knows what the quad does. Even got the FPV antenna installed the proper way (unlike the majority of the "reviewers") for this great quad.
Thanks for the upload...I love this little quad copter...I'm an older guy and wanted to get into these things...I watched your other videos, I already owned the 501s but I had never flown it..Your videos really helped...I just did my maiden flight this weekend past...:)...These things are so killer...Perfect for a beginner...
Dustin : Great video. One thing. When you do a speed, clime rate or agility test, turn off the GPS hold and go into the on screen menu and turn off the altitude hold. You will be in sort of agility mode. You can fly totally manually then. The bees attack the quad because of the sound frequency the props generate and to some degree because bees attack things that are black or any dark color. Bee keepers suits are always white for that reason. I have two 501S. I have both controllers. Both of mine were white. I painted the lower body shell, underside, and rear motor pods flat black and mounted a set of black props on the rear pods on one. The other one I painted the upper body shell flat black and left the tear motor pods white. I mounted gold props on rear pods and a set of black props on the front to match the flat black pods. They look a lot cooler and way different. Looking forward to your range test. Pay close attention to the antennas orientation in regard to the quads position for best results. You might mount one of your high gain di-pole antennas on your FatShark goggles for best flight recording. ;-) P.S. Give that fuzzy cat a pat for me.
Good review. I've flown mine half a dozen times so far and am really happy with it. As someone else noted, the RTH function now points the camera towards you which is certainly a great feature.
What a fantastic review, thank you very much. Mine arrived yesterday and have yet to fly it due to poor weather, I found your review very helpful and enjoyable to watch and to listen to as well. As you mentioned the footage can not be recorded to the transmitter, but can be recorded to the drone via sd card :) I enjoyed this so much that I have liked and subscribed. Thanks again John.. :)
Dustin Dunnill thank you soo much for this detailed and informative testing on this drone! I watched some of your other vids on the hubsan and they have helped me make a decision on one! I know nothing about them but thanks to you i was able to rule out tons of drones for my son based on flight times, features, distance etc! Im still doing some reading but as of now this is the model ill be purchasing!
Hi! I have watched your videos for a couple weeks, and I liked this drone, and I GOT IT FOR MY BIRTHDAY! :D :D :D I think I told you before I would be asking for it, but just to let you know, I got it!
This was the last video i watched, that led me to purchase my X4 501S, i got the standard, but bought and installed the extra range antennas....everything worked 100% as described, i have left it in gps mode and never touch the trim. Thanks for making so many of these videos, this is only my second drone but 1st one with all the features, and these examples helped a great deal.
Rotate your body and calibrate compass 2 will go away is another option. Also don't forget to tune the sticks prior to flight and also reset the internal gyro before each flight (left stick hard right/right stick back and forth left to right until full orange on the bird then let reset). Also going through the settings menu doesn't hurt for a pre-flight review. Much easier on the new controller than the old controller.
Great comprehensive review, that's settled it for me after watching hours of reviews on other models, its the 501s that comes out on top, superb review !!
I recall reading on the message boards that this Headless direction is determined differently than other quads. Forward is defined when it is engaged rather than at takeoff.
Thanks very much! Best review of it that I've seen so far - straight to the point from the get go, clear, clean presentation, showing most options, full flight time, different views of controller screen, goggles and its own camera view and the different Pro's and Cons! Excellent!! Please, in future don't use a Fish eye lens on your head cam though? Thanks again!
I absolutely love your reviews, you are my favorite on RUclips easy! Very detailed! This quad has been out for some time now. Regarding its fly times and features, would you consider still relevant in 2018? Figured I would find out before maybe pulling the trigger on one.
Video tips for this drone. To get a stable video, in your video editing software, choose half the original speed. It would show much less jerks. After that, use the freeware video stabilizer software and the result is almost cinematic. With recording issues, just format the micro SD card without "volume label".
Hey guys took my Hubsan H501ss to Maui. Took it upcountry up above the Lavender Farm where Dustin Dunhill flies. First flight 1880 m. I was so excited i didnt even think of getting that extra 20 meters. Dream come true for me. Advanced controller no firmware updates, flies long distance right out of the box. I frequently get long range right out the front door in a heavily populated urban area. 1000 to 1250m. i never force the issue, just let it fly. Thanks Dustin Dunhill. I love long range and good camera quality w FPV. What would you suggest as my next Quad?
Got the White one bnf & waiting for my offer acceptance from seller 😉 to get the Black Advanced. 🙏 Be watching for all the reviews on it, like you usually do. Well done. !
You have a really clear and concise way, Dustin. The best narrative and review I've seen. Keep it up and I'm about to get one. Can you recommend a reasonable best bang for the buck fpv racer? Happy landings! John
One thing I have to ask, with the advanced version you basically just get the bigger Tx right? Because I still can't decide if the slightly cooler design is worth an extra $50. I mean, yes the sticks look amazing but the screen is smaller than on the "basic" model and the only other feature I could find (Which admittedly sounds awesome) is that you can open the advanced Tx up and take the throttle control off auto-center if you want to use the experimental manual mode that's supposed to be hiding somewhere inside the settings menu of this thing. I don't really think I'd want to try turning that one on with a throttle that defaults to 50%.
just picked up a used unit. Came with no extras like manuals etc. Downloaded a pdf file for the manual and have this video saved while i try and figure this things out lol. Came iwth nothing but remote, receiver and antenna, two batteries and the drone itself with charger for 80 bucks
I'll be buying my third H501S shortly. How amazing someone "Liked" my "Highlighted Comment" from two months ago. I was only kidding about affording this drone. I was serious about affording "Hawian Boy's" wife. I bet she's a knock-out and quite costly. All kidding aside. I highly respect "Hawian Boy" sometimes called "Dustin Dunnill". -Bill Howes.
I really like the quadcopters that Hubsan produces. My first ever was an X4, then went on to the H107D before jumping onto the big boys. I think I want this one too!
Hi Dustin. I know it may have been a long time since you flew the H501SS with advanced controller, but did you typically get about 17 minutes of flight time before hitting around 7.0V and the warning on the transmitter? That is the voltage Hubsan says one should land pretty quickly. That looks to be about the time you got in your video (from around the 15 minute mark til 32 minutes in the video). I'm only getting about 10-11 minutes on two fairly new OEM Hubsan 2700 mAh 10C batteries using the stock charger and I believe the batteries are getting fully charged as I check it with a cheap digital voltmeter which shows 8.35V. I always fly in calm conditions and not aggressively so a baffled why I get so low a flight time. Any ideas? Otherwise the H501SS is a nice drone. Thanks
One thing I had heard about this model was that it had that atrocious auto-disarm if you go full throttle down for three seconds that the smaller x4s sometimes pack. I'm glad to see that was either false news or has been patched out. Takes a weight off my mind since I plan to buy one of these beginning of next month (When flying camera equipped drones once again becomes legal in sweden). I'm honestly wondering what the power on that 5.8GHz transmitter for the FPV is like, since there's a limit on what you're legally allowed to output without a license over here. But it's probably nowhere near that powerful.
Hi Dustin, thanks for this review! It seems like a nice drone for me to start with. The other review i saw about the Hubsan, you were flying it with the app on your phone. Does that work for this one too? Going for some fishing now and will be watching part 2 when i get back home. Thanks again!!
Great video! I am new to this world and the first thing I noticed is that I would much rather use goggles then the controller because of the sun. I have the previous version and I have no idea where to buy goggles. Can you point me in the right direction? Also did you do a battery mod video? woodshew
You know, those "weird little glitches" are exactly what I see when I try to use something that I haven't read the manual for because I thought it would be a basically fancier version of one that I have been using. That's my long and polite way of saying, "You're learning as you go because you didn't read the manual!". It makes for a confusing video because you instruct to flip a particular switch on or off, and then realize it was a different 'particular switch'. I'm personally trying to decide on whether the differences between the H501S and SS are worth the concern in my decision to buy one or the other. I've got a dozen drones collected over a two-year period and I'll still be collecting more before I get to my ultimate goal; a 'Flying Camera'. No, not just any flying camera, but a DJI, Yuneec, or Parrot (more likely a DJI or Yuneec). The camera itself must be, and will be, capable of high quality images. None of these 'shutterless' cams either. I'm a photographer and though, a $3500.00 drone won't be any competition against a Nikon D4S, a DJI (Phantom "X") advertised shuttered cameras and lenses with apertures as large as F2.3. That's what I read months ago and that was in an article that was likely released a year ago. By now, they probably have a number of high quality, 12mp to 18mp cameras. There may be even higher mp cameras out there now, at least, in the shutterless versions, because I see a lot of 14mp shutterless camed-drones by 'generic manufacturers'. Of course, I'm speaking about drones in the $1800.00 to $3500.00 category, not those $45K+ professional/expert drones. However, the key (and the cost), is in the 'shuttered', drone cameras. I'll never afford those Thermal drone cameras, hell, I barely was able to afford the D4S! However, if I can get a good 12mp to 16mp shuttered camera with a dependable drone platform, (and it seems DJI and Yuneec are those platforms), I'm sure I can get some very good images from rarely seen, unique, POV's. Thanks for the video, it was interesting if nothing else... Rich Oh, and buy some shoes, will ya?! (LOL)
Just ordered one of these this afternoon, although apparently they now call it the 'Professional' rather than 'Advanced'. Tried the Spark, but too much hassle connecting to my phone, so I was searching youtube for a half-way decent camera quad which actually came with a screen on the remote. This one seems to fit the bill quite nicely!
Dustin, your video reviews are excellent! Thank you! In one of your videos it sounded like you said "you can see the west Maui Mountains"? Do you live on Maui? I'm a little jealous. Cheers!
I have two of these - my black one RTH flies camera forward and my White one has the camerafacking away on the RTH. I have more expensive drones but the 501S is still my GOTO drone. I do primarily take still photos and it is a very good photo platform. There is a bit of fisheye so the horizon is curved. Since it is fairly inexpensive I am more confident using iti in a "risky" situation, but I have never lost of crashed one.. I just completed a flight to get pictures of a wildfire area that was still "hot" at the request of our Forest Service.. That was what I classify as a risky flight. because recovery might be impossible if anything had gone wrong.
Dustin: Great demo! I've watched both videos on the Advanced and you are very thorough...you tell us what you're pressing and why you're pressing it. Question: Does the 501S Advanced have audio with the video? I have the 502E and it doesn't, which is disappointing.
Hey, don't knock the return home landing. It was actually around 2 feet from where it started! You kept pointing farther away in the wrong spot. lol Great video!
@ Dustin Dunnill I just purchased this quad and the Hubsan community on RUclips dont really know to much about the Hubsan x4 H501S advanced model ..We could really use your range test and also before or after the test could you let us know what firmware your running ...This will simply let most know if the firmware is the same as yours what to expect... I was told you can check the firmware thats running on the transmitter for the transmitter and the quad.. Asking you simply because I found everything I needed to know about different brand drones from your reviews .. As a matter of fact I would have just ordered the regular Hubsan H501S with the regular remote if I watched your vid first..Long story short I love your detailed reviews and keep up the good work...Also you should tell us what firmware was on your plain H501S because you went long range without firmware update Im sure it would help people just stick to the transmitter upgrades you did ..Anyway thanks again for the great vids...PEACE
I heard about a lot of software problems with this quadcopter(the normal one, not the advanced) have you had any? Should I worry about that? I'm looking to buy one for Christmas, what is the range on the normal one (not the advanced) with stock and modified transmiter? Great channal btw, I just subscribed
Calibrate compas: no metal objects in the vicinity. So remove your watch, put it a couple of meters away together with the controller, keys, cell phone, coins,...
dustin paying 39.00 just to get the pro controller worth it in your opinion?im stuck im not sure what to do.i would get the antenna upgrade for the basic version.that would improve it enough to be as good as the pro version?thanks again for your very helpful videos.
I do what the manual says for calibration & that's clockwise.Even If it happens to calibrate(or you think it does) another way like counter clockwise ect,it may not calibrate correctly & it could mis calculate the gps coordinate while in the air & fly away from you or crash.Just a tip!
Hi Dustin! Great video. Question.. I'm debating between the standard and advanced controller. I think the range of the standard is sufficient but I just think the sticks and overall build quality of the pro transmitter is much better. However, some reviewers feel the smaller FPV screen on the advanced is a negative and also the standard transitter was supposedly designed for the 501S unlike the pro transmitter.. Which transmitter do you prefer if range isn't a consideration?
Very good video. Clear and comprehensive. One question. If you are flying low and turn on the RTH, does the quad increase altitude automatically before returning? If so, how high and is this altitude adjustable? Also if altitude is high, does it decrease before returning or stay at the altitude at the time RTH is initiated? Thanks.
if it was running the latest FW it will power off motors when landed in RTH, and by the looks of you other video you go sent 1 that have a working 2.4 antenna cable, unlike a lot of others including my self that had the advanced controller with faulty antenna cables.
One grain of sand will destroy a brushless motor. Any lubricant will attract sand/dirt/dust etc. Don't lubricate the motor or the shaft. Nothing is required. Again, this is exactly what the engineers at Hubsan state, and what many years of r/c modelling has taught me.
Dustin Great review, I have a question did you update the firmware before flight? I took my H501S Advanced out last night to get some night shots. Took the quad up to 50m snapped a few pics while in GPS mode then hit the return to home switch at this time I received a text message, I figured since its in GPS and the return home function is enabled no big deal I will just quickly read my text. After reading the text I return to looking into the night sky yet my drone is no where to be seen, finally I spot it just a tiny blinking light off in the distance, instantly my heart dropped Crap...I checked my transmitter telemetry to find out return home had flown the quad 300m away from my location and was still moving away. I tried to view the FPV screen but with it being so dark I couldn't get correct orientation...then it happened I lost complete contact aka FLYAWAY. Luckily the transmitter gives the last GPS coordinates so I plugged those into googles maps and ended up awkwardly driving around the neighborhoods trying not to look creepy. Finally the GPS lead me to a house with the target somewhere in the back yard...at this time the owner pulls up to his house, I ask I know this might sound weird but I think my drone landed in your back yard, he says "yeah I actually found it 30mins ago"...boom I found my drone with not a scratch on it after it flew itself over 1000ft from my house haha...have you ever heard of the Hubsan H501S Advanced doing this? Im afraid to use RTH now
I just ordered the non-advanced version on Amazon. I heard you mention near the end of your video that it doesn't have aut-start. I was hoping that it had one key start and land. That seems like a good feature for a newbie like me. I just shipped a Holystone quadcopter less than 24 hours after receiving it because it was DOA. So the Hubsan will be my first experience. Do you think this is OK for a beginner or should I have started with something less complicated? Thanks for your detailed review.
Hey dude, I love your channel!Gotta quick question... I have an H501S but it came with the old transmitter. Can I purchase the Advanced Transmitter and bind it to my H501S??
Hey Dustin! I recently received mine but when I flew it I'd occasionally lose control of the quad even though my TX antennas were pointing towards the aircraft.. Any suggestions? Oh and yes I've tried a better antenna for improved range but still the same problem :/
Maybe you got a defect or you have interference nearby. Make sure your phone is in airplane mode and your away from residential areas as much as possible. Wifi can really interfere.
hello and Hi! I read that the top right gimbal knob does work for up and down camera movement. I wonder if you've tried that just for kicks and giggles.
hello. thank you for the video. when RTH begin, what is the altitude it go before come back? and is it possible to change the altitude of an that in any software? thank you
Dustin, have you experienced loss of video/camera feed from the quad with this model? It seems to be a very common problem with the 501S. Gearbest and Hubsan is no help and doing everything they can not to offer a replacement! Any suggestions?
7 years later, I still fly mine. Even with the unplanned receiver change by Hubsan then. How time flies.
Thanks for these videos, they are timeless!

Cool, can't wait for your long range test. I really liked the other long range test. Thank you
Hey Dustin, another very good review.
Love your reviews. Recently got into quads and have bought 3 toy grade quads based off of your in depth reviews.
+David Tidrick Right on David. Glad you find my stuff useful 😀
I did for both calibrations counter clock and it worked faster for me
Hi I have a question I just buy this drone but I can’t make it’s fly when I do the calibration it’s always say lose signal someone can help me please
@@noavenus9549 make sure there is no metal near I.

Oh, and buy some shoes, will ya?!
Thanks for the videos and reviews, your the best and only guy I go to.
Wow thanks I was looking for a cheap and good quality quadcopter for my trip!
+Quincy Lewis 👍😆
wow awesome Dustin love it
What a very decent drone. I miss these days.
Love the video. Just ordered mine. Can't wait to see more updates. 👌
+Rob Solar 👍
ive just got one of these off bangood massiveley reduced (£96 sterling ) and its more fun to fly than my DJI mini 2se
As a matter of fact I would have just ordered the regular Hubsan H501S with the regular remote if I watched your vid first..Long story short I love your detailed reviews and keep up the good work...Also you should tell us what firmware was on your plain H501S because you went long range without firmware update Im sure it would help people just stick to the transmitter upgrades you did ..Anyway thanks again for the great vids...PEACE
hey DD, have you ever flown this in complete manual mode...if so what do you think...
I heard about a lot of software problems with this quadcopter(the normal one, not the advanced) have you had any? Should I worry about that? I'm looking to buy one for Christmas, what is the range on the normal one (not the advanced) with stock and modified transmiter? Great channal btw, I just subscribed
Hello, what about the size of the screen on the remote? Isn't it too small in comparison with a smartphone screen? Thanks for your help.
hello i use a jumper T12 with a multi protocol tx module and the throttle all the way down turns motors off. great little drone.
Hey Dustin, one Q, after 2 years, u still think its a good buy the advanced version? Or do you have any other tip?
now this is the review I been waiting for yay!!!!!
Calibrate compas: no metal objects in the vicinity. So remove your watch, put it a couple of meters away together with the controller, keys, cell phone, coins,...
is the hubsan h501s an ideal drone to cover an event like a wedding ceremony?
Hubsanus sent me here to watch your video while waiting on my h501s pro to arrive. Great video, 👍🏽👍🏽up. 😎
Hey Tony, how's that drone working ? I'm thinking about getting this one too. Thanks .
dustin paying 39.00 just to get the pro controller worth it in your opinion?im stuck im not sure what to do.i would get the antenna upgrade for the basic version.that would improve it enough to be as good as the pro version?thanks again for your very helpful videos.
The pro controller is better in all ways but the smaller screen. Up to you 🍻
Thank you! I am trying to learn how this damn thing works, it was a present for my dad (71) but it keeps "escaping". :)
@Jack Costabile The German Amazon last October.
My analysis is the same essentially it's up to you trading screen side for quality 👍
Thanks.
The advanced drone you have there is actually superior than the original 👍
if it was running the latest FW it will power off motors when landed in RTH, and by the looks of you other video you go sent 1 that have a working 2.4 antenna cable, unlike a lot of others including my self that had the advanced controller with faulty antenna cables.
One grain of sand will destroy a brushless motor. Any lubricant will attract sand/dirt/dust etc. Don't lubricate the motor or the shaft. Nothing is required. Again, this is exactly what the engineers at Hubsan state, and what many years of r/c modelling has taught me.
Now you tell me
Dustin Great review,
I have a question did you update the firmware before flight? Im afraid to use RTH now
Great Video! Love your channel. Are you going to review the dji mavic? Thanks RIch
You made my mind up, thank you!
Which is best, standard controller or advanced?
great review buddy
Really good video!
I just have one question, what the máximum speed it could follow you?
LiFePO4 batteries should be used for drones: lower weight than conventional batteries with more power.
Great Video! I have this drone I cannot figure out how to film videos? Could you help me?
I believe the enter button is video and exit button is photo
I have this one love this quadcopter
AWESOME review, like your videos. I'm a sub.
Awesome thanks for a great video
Why can this channel can't make the drone footage bigger. I don't care about looking at grass and their shodow
hello and Hi! I read that the top right gimbal knob does work for up and down camera movement. I wonder if you've tried that just for kicks and giggles.
hello. thank you for the video.
when RTH begin, what is the altitude it go before come back? and is it possible to change the altitude of an that in any software?
thank you
I have a 501s advanced when I turn it on it beeps constantly even after compass calibration and acquiring satellites, any ideas
Dustin, have you experienced loss of video/camera feed from the quad with this model? It seems to be a very common problem with the 501S. Gearbest and Hubsan is no help and doing everything they can not to offer a replacement! Any suggestions?
which one is better advanced or standard ?
Beautiful spot for flying. Not sure where you are, but it reminds me of malibu (pepperdine specifically).
