    I never comment on youtube, but I damn near bust a gut laughing at the bees. I am an exterminator and beekeeper. What your looking at here can only happen in very specific areas at specific times of the year. Your looking at male honeybees trying to mate with the quad. They are mistaking it for a virgin queen bee. Just a bizarre mistake for the bees! It must bee the tone of the props and the colour of the quad. Now here is the really funny part. Male honeybees are called drones! Drones are trying to f*ck your drone! Rothflmao!

    I bought one of these about 2 month's ago. Even when the screen gets fuzzy, that doesn't show up on the sd card. I've gotten mine out a half a mile so far, still get a crisp clear video. Well worth the $165 that I paid for it. I noticed that you didn't try the circle me mode though. Other than that .. Nice review. There are several other tricks to get a better gps signal. And settings on the tx. I haven't tried it yet. But I love this quad. For the price, it makes me smile every time I fly it. The slots on the tx are for the factory software updates. I wish they would implement it for the sd card's too though. Great job ..

      How many times did your drone crash? There's a lot of sloppy work in the controller! The H501SS with the H901A transmitter is a mess! They modified the controller... all dry joints soldering... even burning the controller/transmitter board! The plastic mold to the micro switch activating camera record, put the drone in circle fly... not indicated in any of the updated manuals!!!!! After my 4th flight I ripped the controller apart! The clack clack noises inside the transmitter was all loose unglued antennas! Oh, may I mention... these guy's showing you all these nice flight videos get these drones sponsored for free to make them look nice! Sorry Dustin.

    Excellent review. I just go one of these and for a novice flyer gps is very forgiving. The controller came set-up for a LiPo and a LiPo battery for the controller was included.

    • @mediamaker2000

      From Gearbest it took about a month but there was confusion with the order and they had to change the quadcopter to one with an American style charge wall plug so it took about a month. On a later order I saw that they had two types of free shipping. One that was 7-25 days and one that was 10 days or less. That order came much quicker.

      hey how is it?

  • @MrTUBER408
    @MrTUBER408 8 лет назад +1

    You can go into the settings in the menu and turn off altitude hold. The H501S will really zip around then. It flies like it is in sport mode. When you crack open the controller, install both external 2.4 and 5.8 rubber ducky antennas. The 5.8 is a dipole transmit antenna so a CP antenna wouldn't work on the receiver. You could remount the bow tie antenna on the outside of the controller or re-position it closer to the top of the controller with hot glue. Getting it just a bit further from the screen will make a noticeable increase in video range.The Lipo mod will increase controller time and it may boost range a bit. A YIZHAN Tarantula X6 battery will fit. You will need a female JST connector. You will have to bust out the AA battery tray divider. Do it with the back off of the controller using pliers. Good MODDING!

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  8 лет назад

      +Don Fish Jr. (The Flying Fish) Thanks Don. Was planning on a dipole or panel for the 5.8 on tx. I believe a panel will accept a dipole transmission well just not a CP correct?
      I love modding! Need to do more of it 😂

    • @MrTUBER408
      @MrTUBER408 8 лет назад

      You are absolutely correct. Aomway makes a 5.8 patch which is supposed to work with CP transmission. It is possible to do, but Aomway's design is crappy it works really poorly. They use 4 square patches,phased with different size and length wire connecting them together, supposed to delay received signals a bit to interface with circular polarization signal. The linearly polarized patch has 2 square patches cut to a pacific size connected together with equal size and equal length wires. Some patch antennas are 2.4 and 5.8 duel frequency.

    I just bought this exact model (used), my first ever drone I haven't managed to get it of the ground yet but this video makes it look like I made the right choice. There are a couple of things that concern me,
    1. The battery is tight in the drone body and the only way to remove it for charging is to pull on the wiring.
    2. The charging plug on the batteries are very difficult to unplug from the charger again pulling on the wires.
    3. There is no switch on the drone to cut the power, you have to unplug the battery connecter.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  3 года назад

      Put some tape on battery as a pull tab. Always try to hold connectors when unplugging 🍻

    • @globeforever9777
      @globeforever9777 3 года назад

      @@DustinDunnill Thanks for the tape tip. The biggest problem is the charger connection, both drone and controller batteries plugs are tight fitting and almost flush with the charger with nothing to get hold of except the wires and they are very tight.
      Is it possible that improvements have been made on newer models as for example I think your model shows disposable AA batteries in the controller?

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  3 года назад

      Try some candle wax in the plastic parts of connectors that make contact. Make sure you don't get it on the outside portions you grip though. Occasionally some are just worse than others 🍻

    Bee attack was awesome. I have had many "encounters" with bees/wasps. I may have lost a few battles, but I definitely won the war! Uhhh ... 2 football fields is 600 FEET, not 600 Yards as you said. The FPV video drops out before you reach the range of the quad. I don't know why they don't have jacks on the top of the TX so you can screw on a couple of "real" antennas to optimize range, although it doesn't look like you can do any upgrade to the quad's antenna systems. Pretty impressive flight time even if you can't go very far. Not sure where this fits in at $270 USD. Given the lowering prices of most regular GPS quads that just have GPS and no other bells & whistles (like follow me), its probably reasonably priced for someone looking for a quad with its characteristics. I think this is the 3rd review I've seen of this quad now, but probably the most exciting with the "bee adventure". Hope that "PETA" doesn't watch ... or maybe that would be "PET-BEE" .. ha ha. Cheers!

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  8 лет назад +1

      +Bill Somrak Thanks bill. There's so much going on when us reviewers are flight testing while trying to keep the commentary going sometimes we miss speak. I'm no different and usually my edits are due to wonky speech while trying to concentrate on flying or weird grunts I subconsciously make...lol.
      Modding antennas and seeing how it does with 2 lipos parallel as soon as they come in. May be a good quite little long range FPV quad once mods are done. Poor bees...I felt soo bad but there was nothing I could do to avoid them.

    Nice review. I've only been flying quads for a couple of weeks now,but the H501s is the first "camera quad" I've seen that I would actually buy "for the money". It's not perfect but you have to remember it's not a Phantom 4 lol. I don't think the bee's liked it as much as me 😂. Thx Dod.

    I have flown my one so many times. So quick to setup and grab some video - great to grab those sunsets and sunrises when you just want to screw on some props and send it up. I need to do maintenance because of some jello now after a lot of abuse. Have given it some bad times. If you like sport flying in altitude hold - if it drops out of the sky randomly, you usually think back to performing the disarm by accident. Gotta feel for those bees though.

    +Dustin Dunnill, thank you for your excellent reviews about hubsan h501s. I had seen that drone, mostly as mini ads (top 5 drones, something like this) and then I saw your vids. You presented it well, I understood that it's a good drone and I bought it. I has beem delivered to me and it's really good. A very good thing this drone has (among the rest positives) is that it's a well known brand, so it's easier to mod/buy parts/fix it. Thank you for your reviews. Btw, I had ordered h501s, but I got h501s-s which I think I've seen in vids that it's better. Just the motors of the props were kinda leaning, but I partially fixed them. Well done Dustin!😂😂

    Had this drone for a couple years and for the $$ it's the best entry level unit for its' time. I was interested in it specifically because it had the screen built into the remote. Believe it or not I didn't own a smart phone when I bought it and just about all drones today require one for a screen. I've had the antenna mods done and with it been able to cross a 500m lake with no drop in signal or display. This baby is down to $150 today so I recommend it, along with the lipo battery for the remote because she's a power hog. Also pickup at least one spare drone battery as well as props. I've replaced my props twice so far because they are very sharp and in turn are very delicate. One run in with a tree or shrub and you'll have large nicks. And don't be a d-bag and fly over people or highways. This isn't a cheap toy so if it fails and comes down on someone it could hurt them seriously, even take out a windshield. It's why the FAA has such strict rules on this hobby.

    Great video and very thorough. I didn't realize the challenges with full pitch forward and altitude control until I viewed this. Now to my question... I'm debating between the H502S and H501S (standard TX), I understand a key difference is the brushed motors/longer flight time, but have you had any issues with reported inexplicable flyaways with either model? Also, is the port on the right side for the SD card to record the FPV screen actually operational? Some other videos have reported it does not actually function.

I have a Runcam attached to the belly with foam and a rubber band and it works great , almost no jello at 1080p 60 fps but a gimble install would be awesome. I also attatched syma x8c legs with zipties to the arms to get it off the ground. The pins on the legs fit perfect into screw holes on the bottom of the arms. Flies great and still gets around 16 minutes of flight time.

    Good evening I'm Jeff and just pre viewed your video on this drone which I have just purchased. I love the things that it does omg. The bee's where a added attraction. Of course being in a city with windy conditions very cold temps I can't try this out till the spring. I do notice that unlike other drones it does not have landing legs or prop guards on it? Is that normal for this brand? Any way I booked marked your video and gave you a thumbs up. Very educational. I'll keep you posted come spring on maiden flight. I especially love the gps that it has, my drone which I still have does not have that function, only the altitude hold button. Thanks again for sharing.

      Hi Jeff. The landing gear are built low profile into body under motors to keep it compact propvguards come with some Hubsan models. If not, they are very cheap at a few dollars on the linked website. Good luck with your maiden flight! Practice in a large open area away from people 👍

    Hellooo, I'm brand new to drones. A friend of mine has two, dji 4 pro and Bebop2. He shoots vids of different stuff which is sorta cool. I thought I'd have shooting vids of mt. bikers doing downhill and maybe racing it with other drones. For the money it appears to be the best. Which kit version (are there options?) do you suggest? Many thanks! Great vid! Keep up the good work!

      I was hesitant on upgrading mine for same reasons but i wanted more altitude and i wanted to keep the lights on continuously and i feel like it works even better not to mention the range is greatly increased the upgrade fw was easier than i thought no problems my opinion i think its just random defective quads but if you dont care for any of that than dont its still great copter without update

    I purchased an H501s just last night and I hope I have the success you did in this video. I don't think you mention the price point of the quad which seems like a good ratio to the features it has, even if they don't work perfectly. You may have flown into a swarm of bees and they started to follow the H501s rather the queen??? Interest event.

    Great video. I've got used to flying using an X4 and I am now looking to purchase a small/lightweight drone that is capable of shooting 1080p to take with me on my travels. I was considering getting the Blade 200qx and attaching a camera but I think this is more viable...slightly more expensive BUT the follow me function and built in camera makes me think it's the better option.

    AWESOME Video!!!! I have the same and I LOVE IT!! Altitude hold is kinda to fast for me,plus I like on gps hold where you can release the controls and it just hovers for you! I haven't really tested the distance yet other then straight up to about 150 meters,by then I can't even see it.so, why would they make it transmit so far when you can't even see it past a certain point? I am thinking about getting goggles for it but not sure what kind. And suggestions? Anyways, love all your videos!! Keep them coming!

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  8 лет назад

      Thank you. You can tune into the vrx frequency on the quad with a 32 channel video receiver. So look for goggles with 32ch capability and they'll work with other quads too. Or if you can find the correct cable, plug into the transmitter video out on left side. I have yet to find the perfect cable.

    Thanks for the upload...I brought the same model in black in late may, but just getting ready for her maiden flight...This will really help me...Just an FYI...I know they're calling them satellites...But, as a USAF vet with a degree in communications equipment covering all frequencies...These little drones are working from cell phone towers, just like the GPS...There are no satellites in space, and if there were, that little tiny box with the little tiny battery could NEVER punch through the atmosphere...Our HF equipment on C5's and C-141's had 5000 watt transmitters...The entire leading edge of a horizontal Stabilizer on the C-5 is an antenna..Sorry to be a nudge; just sayin...:)...

    • @DustinDunnill

      Wow it's amazing then how they know their GPS location when there are no cell towers when I fly out in the boonies 😂

    • @godbluffvdgg
      @godbluffvdgg 5 лет назад +2

      @@DustinDunnill You just think there's no cell towers...Do you have a phone signal?...Look I understand how it's easy to believe what we're told.., I have no reason to bullshit you...I worked ALL the communications systems on commercial and military Aircraft including the CDPIR, Crash Data Position Indicator and Recorder...NONE of it EVER interfaces with a satellite...
      Wouldn't military and commercial aircraft want to use satellites?......It wan't until I was out of the aviation business for some time until I had the epiphany...It's just not something you think about...But when you do, and you have a good understanding of signal entropy and power to transmit ratios, the entire satellite thing falls apart like a cheap suit...Google Comm/nav equipment and look for anything on the selector switches that say SAT COM or SAT UP OR SAT ANT...All GPS, Voice. data and Video information gets sent by wire to repeaters or frequency identifying equipment...I guess high altitude Aircraft could be considered satellites, but they sure as heck aren't going into "space"...

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  8 лет назад

      +Renzonr50 Thanks. Yes, the meter for quad batter is not the best. It has 2 low battery failsafes. First slow decent at around 6.8v but you can still fly and throttle up if needed. Second around 6.5v where it will slowly go into forced landing and you cannot throttle up but can still fly normally.

    That was excellent, Dustin. Quite a comprehensive video. Well narrated, well put together. Now, here's my issue. I just got my first drone (It's this very one). My plan was to use it to record me catching a Salmon. So, I'm standing chest deep in water, I've hooked a fish. I may be able to scramble to the bank. Whilst playing the fish with my double handed spey rod, I unpack my drone, set the compass on the drone, get it airborne, lock it in position so it can follow and record me landing the Salmon. Then, I need to consider where I'm going to land it. I'll probably be surrounded by trees and water. Does anyone have any tips to make this even possible to do?

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  5 лет назад +1

      I'd consider another person. If that's not possible, maybe launch it pre cast and have it follow/record you the entire time your fishing. I fish and would not attempt the set up on my own with fish on.

    • @martinramsey6473
      @martinramsey6473 5 лет назад

      @@DustinDunnill Thanks for your reply. That sounds like a plan. But I reckon that would only add to the problem. My choices would be 1. My wife in her designer wellies wading a few feet behind me. But she would only complain that the river bank is muddy and, the water is wet. Or 2. My fishing buddy who doesn't even have a smart phone, because he isn't. I think I would need to opt for the pre launch before my first cast and, hope to hook a fish on that cast. I reckon I would only get 2 or 3 casts before having to land the drone. :)

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  5 лет назад

      Since this drone can fly for 20 mins you'll have some time 30 mins with 2 batteries in parallel (see my videos). Maybe get some extra batteries. I believe Hubsan now has low battery auto return to launch if it's far enough away from that point (test run to be sure it won't land in water). So you could put it up, get your angle and start to follow controller/you and not have to worry about landing it when battery gets low 👍

  • @patg223

    The quad's vibration attracted the first bees, but when the props chopped them up, the bee's pheromones were released which signaled the swarm to attack. That's why they say if you're ever attacked by Africanized bees, don't swat them or smash them because it will draw the rest of the hive.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  8 лет назад

      +patg223 Sounds exactly right. Thanks for sharing the Info. Companies should start including how to repel bees in their quad design. Bees are so important.

      Thanks. There is a 3d printed Gopro tilt attachment out for sale but not sure on a gimbal. It would have to be very small/light and custom fitted since there are no screw holes on bottom to mount one up. Maybe i'll "stick" a gimbal on the bottom just to see what happens :)
