    Dustin. I did that exact thing to my Walkera 350PRO, with slightly better results. I used a TopCam with a 600Mw 5.8GHz Echine transmitter (postage stamp size) to minimize weight. You would think that 2 batteries would give at least 3/4 more flight time. The old law of diminishing returns. One 11.1V, 5,200 MAH battery (313G) is a 85G heavier than two 7.5V 2,700 MAH batteries (228G total) Great Idea for a test. Great results. Surprising performance. You should have checked motor temperature. Put your finger on each, right after the flight. I use that trick on brushed motors to determine if one is getting ready to burn out. An infra red touch-less thermometer is a good tool. It will warn you before you get a bad surprise. I wonder how hard they were working with the extra weight?

      Yeah I was wondering the same about how much harder the motors were working. Is there an RPM sensor that can be installed on one of the motors to see the difference in RPM with the extra weight?

    hey I gotta question I just purchased my first balance charger (IMAX b6) trying to see if my math is right stock battery is 2700mah 7.4v (2s) 10c so I can charge up to 2.7 amps I have two other batteries same but 30c does this mean I can charge those at 8.1 amps because higher c rating or is my math wrong thanks for help and reply if you can or anyone who can

    How many volts does the battery hold? I got this and the drone is amazing it's just as soon as I got it, I charged the battery for 2 hours and it was still red. So I kept it charging for 1 day and it was still red so I decided to start this baby up. When I did, It said ONLY 7.3-4 volts and the battery juice level of the drone was 1 BAR and I only got about 5-7 MINUTES of flying time. I charged it AGAIN for a DAY and it STILL was only like at 1 bar and 7.3-4 volts. What is the problem? (I bought it new but opened, not flown though) If I could get a reply that would be great. Thanks!

    +105g for the extra battery right? What's your opinion about it maybe lifting a Git2 (64g) and a Jiyi 3D gimbal (166g) @230g total. Flying with care of course, no crazy stuff like punching the throttle, just slow and smooth gliding camera stuff... I've seen some brushed quads lift it with ease (Taranatula X6, MJX101 and the likes), flying with care people say the brushed motors don't burn out all that much faster and since this is a brushless one...

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  8 лет назад +1

      +Kouji82 /Borgman I think the ESCs will be taxed but may be ok. Just keep it slow sluggish flying..lol. Lighter gimbal if possible.

    • @RagicalPlays
      @RagicalPlays 8 лет назад

      Thanks, yeah I figured as much. It would be right on the edge of pushing it to the limit. Technically those two brushed quads I mentioned are being pushed beyond what they're supposed being able to handle anyway. Heh maybe a Walkera 2D plastic gimbal (120g), but losing that extra axis makes me sad :D

  • @pettit4674

    Question: I would like to increase my H501SS battery to 3S in order to haul a mini gimbal without overheating the components. You have proven that it should work. What I'd like to know is did the copter voltage show correctly on the transmitter? I have the new/enhanced transmitter, which shows both TX and RX battery levels. I don't know of the TX you have does that. Thanks. P.S. This is related to the fact that a battery with more cells will not have a low-voltage cutoff/alarm, and what to do about it. Also, since watts = voltage X amps, a 3S would provide same watts without overdriving the amps (burnout).

  • @rosscooper253

    I am reading that in parallel 7.4v is same volts but double the amps vs series at 14.8v regular amps of one battery. Which setup is better for a photo/video platform vs. unleashing the brushless motors with no gps or altitude control and if you get the FPV goggles a race quad?

  • @TobyRussell
    @TobyRussell 8 лет назад +1

    Hey Dustin. Do you have any videos showing how you add the second battery to the quad? Also how does it not just double the voltage. Thanks.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  8 лет назад

      I don't but it's very easy and just taped to bottom. The battery is connect in Parallel (there are adapters on ebay). It does not change voltage only the capacity, so it's like your making a bigger battery with just more capacity :)

    Nice video.
    Btw do you have good experience with gearbest? I have been thinking to buy that quadcopter couple weeks now, but I don't know where. I live in Finland, and in gearbest EU warehouse that copter costs only 215 euros (it's weird). So I'm not sure should I buy it from gearbest. Some people says that warranty doesn't work, they send wrong items and won't change it for right item, packets get lost, items are broken when they get it etc. So do you recommend to buy it from gearbest?

    • @terrysferedes7986
      @terrysferedes7986 8 лет назад

      yes I had trouble with gearbest. order the 501s drone and the long distance antenna and only received the antenna. finally I was able to prove to them that I only got the antenna. then I ordered a sun shade that didn't fit the 501s correctly. they made good on everything but it's not worth the aggravation.

    Hello to you. I bought a (zippy 2200mAh 25c) battery for my hubsan 501s. The first day using it, it ran fast responsive and beautiful. The second day I ended up burning up a esc. From your best guess do you think battery 25c rating is to powerful or bad timing on possibly faulty esc? What's your best guess on this weird issue

    With this part of this very good review, I'm glad there's a height limit.
    This one is very appropriate in some countries where the altitude is limited to 150 meters without need to notify the air regulators. Great!
    The last coordinates after a loss... Genius!
    Really interesting modification of it. It seems to be a really good barebone for some modifications.
    With "married" (same cycle of life: charged at the same time, used at the same time, same age, same model, etc...) batteries, it could be quite a bit more interesting.
    +-30 mins... It's a big flight time...

  • @monkeyfpv7866
    @monkeyfpv7866 5 лет назад +2

    Great test but two batteries in parallel gave you an extra 10 mins fly time. In theory this is a 10 min loss as two flights wth fresh single batteries will give you 40 mins. Thanks for sharing.

  • @QCGUY
    @QCGUY 7 лет назад +1

    Nice to see a new upgrade for this quad. I was hoping to see a longer "controlled" flight than 28 minutes though. Not sure an extra 8 minutes is worth working my motors harder. I have tested brushless quads after doing upgrades that add weight with a laser heat tester and the motors always are at a higher temp with more weight. Not to say this is bad for them but a possible risk and something to note/think about.

  • @meangreen231
    @meangreen231 7 лет назад +1

    Hey Dustin, great test! I am also thinking on flight time increase by connecting 2 batteries. I believe the weight of batteries must be close to default ( approx. 150g) for max gain, the main increase should be in capacity (mAh), I am not sure about C rating. In theory it will be already gain in continuous discharge amps just by getting more capacity with default 10C rating, although if C rating is higher it would be needing less throttle for ascending and cruising... this should be test worthy! The closest I could find is Bias 20C 2S 2000mAh 7.4V, 88 x 32 x 17mm, 93g. Total should look like 20C 4000mAh 7.4V 186g. If those 2 wore hooked up in a parallel what results could be achieved, whats your thoughts?

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  7 лет назад +1

      I like your thinking bue 2 4000mah lipos would be too much weight for the quad and overheating, component failures and flight handling may not be worth it. You can always test it though :)

    • @meangreen231
      @meangreen231 7 лет назад

      Dustin Dunnill I meant two 20c 2000mah with total 186g weight. Default batteries weights 105g each so it would be approx 25g lighter setup. I wonder does 20C would gain over 1400mah less capacity?

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  7 лет назад

      I see. Sorry. Yah it's worth a try. I don't see how it could do any harm if it's not heavier than the dual stock lipos.

  • @MrTUBER408
    @MrTUBER408 8 лет назад +2

    You should try connecting the balance plugs together with appropriate gauge copper wire. It would eliminate the weight of the Y connector wire and neaten up the appearance. The 400 foot sealing is becoming standard on all GPS quads. The long arm of big brother! Some white Velcro on the ends of the external battery would provide a little air gap for the transmitter vents. That battery price is really good. :-)

    Good review and test. I think the "laws of diminishing returns" clearly showed here. You added 100% more battery capacity but got only 50% extra flight time .. and very mild flying at that (as opposed to, say, going full throttle out to it's range limit and then bringing it back at full throttle). Video and photos were very respectable, but, of course, not up to what you'd get with a 'full fledged' camera bird with 3 axis gimbal. At $260 its a nice option for those who want something reliable with some decent features. After watching reviews on many different craft of this sort, with firmware updates available, it is not unlikely that the new firmware might be buggy. I think a lot of guys are of the opinion that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Hubsan has generally been responsible, so I would expect them to address any issues, unlike XK/WLToys, who seeming don't care much about fixing documented "issues". Thanks for the review. Mahalo!

      When my h501s started to become dangerous and basically unflyable Hubsan sent firmware to me. When I tried it my motors stopped in mid flight and quad was drowned and lost. When reporting back to Hubsan the response was it was user input as motors won't stop because of firmware. Strange as this happened when in gps hover and I wasn't touching the sticks. I wouldn't recommend this quad to anyone.

    A very interesting test.
    Out of curiosity I watched you part 2 test again after watching this and then again at the same time as witching this.
    In hover the motors sounded like they were working significantly harder (sound recording can be deceptive) but brushless or not I would be concerned by the effect of the extra weight on the longevity of the motors. Because of that I don't think I would use the mod even though the extra flight time would be nice.
    In the long run I think I would prefer to have two 20 minute flights rather than one 30 minute one.
    I confess however that I have only done two flights with one of these birds (a loaner) so I'm probably being overly cautious.
    On that flights however, I should point out that when I took a series of stills the video also stopped so perhaps that may be normal.

      +didactylos4 diddy4 Good points. I did forget to feel how hot the motors were afterwards but I suspect it's tolerable. +Dustin Dunnill I found the anttena's gave great range standard. Just by putting the 5.8g directional patch on the outside it could fly over 1000m easy and not drop fpv signal. Tried a 14db patch but signal range halved.

      Thinking it over it IS good to know that such a mod is possible so easily as there is now the opportunity for an occasional longer flight when it is needed.
      So thanks for the demo test as you have proved it can be done when or if required :)

    Headless mode is kind of useless on this quad. Unlike other quads headless mode angle is from where it's activated not where it's pointing from activating motors. Kinds useless if you've lost orientation and need headless mode to bring it back.

      I wouldn't do it with the brushless quads as it will burn the motors out sooner. just look for a parallel Y adapter on ebay with the same connectors or make your own and strap the other battery to the bottom if you really want to do it.

    I know your vid is over 3 yrs on now, but I have to ask, and hope you are able to remember. I believe your Hubsan quad runs on "brushless" motors. Is that correct? I only ask because, though it is much quieter than many quads I've heard screaming much much louder in the past, what I did notice is the squeaking, coming from those supposed, brushless motors. So what my intended questions here are; do you recall hearing that squeaking, prior to adding the weight of that extra battery? Is/was your quad flown enough to start wearing down the motors? Approx how many hours of flight time was on the quad, prior to the making of this video?
    And finally, though it's just my own opinion regarding the noise of those motors, it does have me feeling a bit cautious about buying this Hubsan model. Can you give me some feedback on any of this & if you still have the quad, what kind of condition is it in now? Hopefully it's not crashed, as I've heard you & others saying, putting this full throttle, can drive it into the ground, when in GPS hold. But if it's never crashed, and if you still have it, I'd like to know how well those motors have, or are holding up. As I mentioned, I understood these are brushless, so that squeaking does have me wondering about the quality of those motors, that's if they are in fact, brushless, as advertised. We all know that the Chinese have a tendency of taking shortcuts more often than buyers are aware, so, I'm just saying....
    I know I'm a bit long winded here, but I felt I should be as thorough as I can be, in the hopes that you have a full understanding of what my thoughts & concerns are.
    Thank you for your time & help Dustin & thank you as well for putting out such well informed reviews. You are yourself, a very thorough reviewer, leaving little to nothing left to have to question. I appreciate that, and trust in your opinions & overviews.
    Keep up the good work Sir!

    I would like to see if "flight time" has anything to do with the Return to Home feature. I wonder if you merely took off and went 100 years or so away and 200 feet high, then return to home after only a minute flight time, if the drone would return to the exact take off point. ???? Perhaps the longer the flight time, the further away it lands?

    I'm interested in someone else's experience with two batteries, as well as the result. The load on the motors and regulators is significantly increased and causes concern. I would not fly so constantly. If only it is necessary to fly far (but in the case of your standard transmitter it is difficult). And if you need to fly nearby, it's better to just use several batteries in a row.

    Hey Dustin, thanx for giving us the best reviews on all these quads, really enjoying watching your reviews, gives me amazing insight right before a purchase. Do you know what the latency delay is on the FPV? if i wanted to fly through gates, trees ect would this quad be able to do so without suffering latency regarding the video feedback? I watched your video on the Walkera f210 and it would obviously be more suited to doing fpv racing, however i would like to train for fpv racing with a hubsan because it has all the beginner safety measures in place, with the f210 i wont have any safety modes like gps lock ect. I used to fly LOS heli's ( Raport 30 ) and now im looking at starting with quads. What would be a great entry level quad? I dont want a phantom, would get bored to fast, walkera f210 might be to fast to learn on ect, your advice would be greatly appreciated.
