I just got one of these new in the box from a second hand store and its a lot of fun! It also did com with a black collapsible sun hood for the screen. I can only assume they watched this video and took your advice.
Great detailed review with tips! This helps me to become enthousiastic again. A few years ago I got a Hubsan X4 107C as a present. I am not a RC pilot and my very first flight went wrong as I flew my tiny X4 to far away. With my neighbours we searched for 4 hours! in the field. But... we found it, with a big swollen battery inside. So from that time on I only flew the X4 in my small home. Your review reveals useful technological features which fit into budget and will help me to blow a second live in my RC hobby. Especially the feature of presenting the GPS coordinates on the remote and 'return to home' will invite me to go out in nature again. Btw... I love those robust Eneloops too! Ralph.
Very helpful video. Thanks for sharing! Mine own s in the mail. I have many quads, but I wanted a GPS camera drone that comes in under 250 grams, so I won't need to call 5 airports each time I fly around my driveway or my lawn. Hubsan also recommends users keep the factory version of the firmware. Good job mentioning that. It's important.
Just picked this up on Amazon and was surprised to find a battery tucked into the controller (no need for AA batteries!) as a nice little bonus. And there was an included sun shade as well, good job Hubsan!
Just ordered it. Thanks for the good review. For $118.99 you can't go too wrong. I upgraded to an extra battery and props for a total of $135.99 and free shipping. You just can't beat that price for having GPS and return to home features.
I want this as a hiking selfie drone. Small enough to fit in a day pack, just take the props off. GPS position hold and follow me mode, plus FPV for under $200!
All of your reviews are excellent, Dustin and after watching this one, I've ordered this quad! It looks like a really good (and fun) "first GPS" quad. Keep up the great work!
i have the revell-control pulse fpv which is a re-branded h502s it's a very good quad copter however i would recommend getting a few extra lipo batteries so you can charge a bunch of them and get more flight time without having to go home and charge one. also the controller EATS batteries so take a few spare aa batteries
This vid might be 2 years old, but I'm getting one ! Used to have JJRC H29G ( twice :P ). The remote is almost identical, but no GPS, Hold altitude or follow me. Also about half the price, but that this records its last known position, almost makes it worth it on its own for me. Great review and starter tips ! I hope this payed for wind-thingy for your mic ;) Cheers !
Love your RUclips channel! You give the info we want and no bs. Nice long reviews, not commercials. Love your mods, distance tests, time tests, etc. HERES MY QUESTION FOR ONLY YOU: Hubsan H501S vs H501S Advanced vs H502S. You've used them all. It seems there are little differences. I went to Hubsans site and they don't sell an advanced model. Is the advanced only advanced because of external antennas? I love the 502 because of price ($169). Some (youtube Justin Smith) say they got it to fly 2015 meters, others (RUclips AndyRC) says it geofenced at 120 meters. Others say a firmware update geofenced it. You got the 501 advanced to fly 1800 meters out of the box and 200 more meters with a different antenna. Is that cause it's advanced? Would the non advanced 501 go as far with an antenna mod? Is the 501 worth $289 while the 502 is $169? Are these the best gps fpv low cost quality drones available or should we be looking at different models that are even more amazing for the price? I know I have lots of questions, so sorry, but you are the only source to trust these questions to. I'm dying to find a powerhouse, low cost, gps fpv long range drone. I'm getting the feeling it's coming down to these hubsans. Your thoughts and opinions mean quite a lot. Can you explain them in comparison to each other with mods in consideration? Feel free to contact me direct or here. I don't want to miss your reply. Thank you so very much, Justin. Bovane
Thanks and I'm glad you enjoy my stuff. I really try to do make them as complete as possible although some may be long. The H502 is brushed so you will have motor failures eventually. I would go for the 501s advanced as it is brushless.. it has a tad smaller screen but the controller is much better all around and you can always tune some fpv goggles to the video and use those. As for if they are the best FPV..... They lack video stabilization ... otherwise IMO yes they have a great compact design, fly very long, have good distance with telemetry and some advanced gps functions. I have had no problems or failures with them after many flights aside from that alt hold tumble when flying to fast as seen in my H501s Advanced range test.
Dustin Dunnill I was just about to order the 501s non advanced for $225! I figured I could put the antennas on myself for $8-14 bucks. Does advanced offer much more that those antennas?
i almost went ahead and ordered this from amazon on the strength of your review, but then I saw that the reviews were split 35%/35% (1 star/5 stars). Most if not all of the negative reviews complained of motors burning out after 2-5 uses. Too big a risk for me. If they can fix that, these these seem like winners. Really like all the technology in them. Looking for something comparable in the low to mid $100 range. That said, good reviews. I've watched a few and you are thorough and show a lot of the functionality of the products. Great work!
That's the problem with any brushed drone. Never know when they will fail. I'd recommend a brushless if you can afford a bit more. I'm glad you enjoy my channel. Thank you :)
@Dustin Dunnhill. Awesome job as always watched the whole way through. was hoping you would speak about the difference between this and the hubsanH501s in more detail. I want to know in your opinion what's the differences bet the 2 and which one is better bang for your buck.. Thanks keep the reviews coming 👍👍
Didn't see your flight time quote, so you launched at 24:00 and it dropped itself at 35:00 . Not sure if that would be conclusive of ave active flight time, given the mild mission. Very good video, thanks.
There is a jst connector inside battery box,you can use spare battery from drone push it into battery box, then to left, then plug it in,it will last a lot longer regular batteries
What made putting those props hard for me,was all that blue, lock tight on the screws, also my 502E didn't say that two of the props were counter clockwise, because I was worried that I may have crossed threaded some of the screws,I had them send me a replacement set, which hubsan did for me,I also got a set of screws without the lock fire,I haven't flown my 502 E yet because of my heath,I just holding when I do that all the props stay on ,I not the only one that has run into that problem, they should send a bottle of lock fire and let us do it oueselfs.
Challenge for you lol... Practice some camera fly bys. Chose an object, and fly past in a straight line, but you have to keep the object on screen as you do so lol... It's doable in headless mode ;-).... I will be giving it a go myself, as soon as my H502 is delivered....
Thanks for your videos!...they helped me make a pretty good choice as a total new quad flyer!...this 502E is real easy to fly in any wide open area!... Just have to follow the calibration set up and wait for all the satellites! I got hooked now!...already looking to upgrade!...i think gearbest will be pretty happy in the coming months!!!
The bird would have flown a bit faster if you had turned off the GPS hold. Nice for a brushed motor quad. Wouldnt hang a second battery. Too much strain on those less powerful motors. I have heard that flips take a tole on brushed motors. A good flight test!
I just stripped a quad car x25 and will be regulating it's 3.7v brushed motors with a 2s lipo for the fpv voltage. I think this is what hubsan did on these.
i wanne stress that ''hubsan'' does listen and now includes the sunscreen you mension.....this is a very nice drone. Only drawback is that indeed there is no room for a bigger battery pack. Unless you open it and take out the plastic protection that seperates the battery for the print on the bottem. Make sure to put some tape over that bottem print put all back togheter ''leaving out this one peace, And now you can snugly fit a bigger pack off 1400mah 7.4volts. works for me...
Great review , do you prefer the FPV one (H502S) or H502E ? I mean does having FPV helps to maintain orientation and navigate through any obstacles (trees etc) ?
Prasad Hegde I would stay clear of trees and buildings. This inexpensive quadcopter does *not* have any automatic object avoidance. Drones like this are best in open spaces and are safest flying a good chunk over trees and buildings. FPV helps for framing your video and to see where the drone is flying when it is at some distance from you.
Hey Dustin Dunnill, and everybody that have this H501, H502s, H107d quad drones. They do have an upgradable Hubsan antenna that you can install on your transmitter. That way you can fly more than 400 feet from the ground. Just go banggood.com and type in Hubsan upgrade antenna. I've seen people fly about a half of miles or more just install the extended antenna. That is what you need to get more flight distance.
+slicaltimistic1 yes, I've done it on my h501s reviews. Same theory here but brushed motors are a bit harder to trust and if it goes down that far away most likely will be lost. Still doable though 👍
Dustin Dunnill If it goes down at a distance the ladt coordinates will show on your FPV screen - BEFORE you turn off your transmitter take a good photo of the screen with your phone!
Am I correct that a big difference between the H502S and the H501S is you can't turn off altitude hold on the H502S unless you are using the H501S transmitter? Also, to use the RTH, can you take off with just the "forced" altitude hold, switch to full GPS, and then hit RTH or does it have to be in full GPS at take-off? Finally, does it tend to be sluggish even with just altitude hold on? I'm wondering about the "fun factor" of this quad.
Nice review but am surprised only a few people mentioned the wind making your words hard to follow. I had this review on in the background and it was almost unbearably annoying and I couldn't pay what little attention I had to give because of the wind. You can easily make a windscreen for a mic by the way.
As it as no obsistical obvoidance It needs a set altitude and a clear 'Home' to avoid hills. I tjink A long review, which is good for ME. How long will the motors last? I have a brushed Pro boat Impulse 17 Acceleration makes it hot, not top speed. Do you have to stay in one place with headless mode? I guess that it connects to phone for location. Does it fly faster in one direction? Can you buy spare motors?
I have this model used it 2 years performed well.Had it stored for some time charged batteries to tranmitter and Drone got battery tester.Showing full power .I know you did nor recommend firmware update.Could this be a problem why my drone will not start up? Thanks for showing.
Another great review Dustin 👍. I really like the look of this quad but it's quite pricey here in the UK even from China. The 501s isn't that much more (about £50). I seen Frequent Flyer's flight with the 502e with 501s/502s type tx and the 502e does everything that the 502s does apart from fpv. I think the 502e bnf would be a great companion quad to go with a 501s 😀. Thx Dod.
Given the fact that this drone is recommended as a beginner drone I find the manual severely lacking! I plugged the USB cable in the drone to download the video footage, nothing happens - whether I connect the battery or not. How to download video? Are there more extended video tutorials about settings, flymodes, flying etc.?
Hi Justin, To start, very new to the quadcopter world ,awaiting arrival of Hubsan X4 H 502S. I have watch and enjoyed your video's, especially the ones on the Mods.I also enjoy doing a little tinkering on different projects , having said that, I have one for you if you are interested. You stated in one of your reviews that Hubsan should enable the card slot so as to allow you to record OSD. This would give you valuable information in the event that you did loose your Quad by supplying you with Gps location and also a visual of the area in case of a lost quad . Can this be done easily and what are your thoughts. Sorry if this was a little long winded, just trying to get some information and how it would be done . Thanks
Hi - QUESTION??? -- I am experiencing a problem with the "compass dance" not wanting to complete compass 1. I have bound and turned at least 8 times with no success. I am indoors close to a window. Is being indoors part of the problem? Any suggestions? Also, the battery life using AA Alkaline batteries is very, very short, so I am going to make a conversion to a LiPo battery. QUESTION??? what is the smallest LiPo would you recommend for this task? Is an 800 maH big enough?
Mike Johnson hi, first of all to fix your "dance" problem you have to do outside preferably but for better results don't do the dance just turn it on itself, as for the battery 800 is plenty :)
Hi Dustin, Really like the way you do your videos! Can you point me in the right direction? What are the major differences in the H501s and the H502s? I see the video is 1080p vs 720p. I want to take video at shooting contests, so follow me "might" be handy but I don't think it's necessary? Is the 501 worth the difference in price in your opinion? I am a complete noob with quadcopters, although I flew RC planes when I was younger.
Frijoli The big deal is that the h501s weighs more than 250 grams, and in the USA requires users to register with the FAA under part 336 of UAV rules before flying (five bucks every 3 years covers you for any number of drones). I think the h501s uses the same exact controller as the h502s. The h501s has brushless motors which should last longer, and the h502s has brushed motors. From what I have seen, the video is better quality on the h501s too. The h502T, h502C, h502E do not have FPV. The h502s does have 5.8GHz standard FPV. Each of these has brushed motors and each weighs only 140 grams or less!! No FAA registration is required to fly these.
Dustin, Outstanding channel and love your videos, I am new, Is this a good flier for a beginner?. I have experience in cars, trucks and planes...But never a quad?. What would you recommend for 250 bucks and below. I don't want to buy one and then outgrow it too fast? Thanks
How is the quality of the video this quad records? I know it has GPS to hold it study but without a gimbal do you get the jello look to your video? Thanks for the great review you did for this quad.
It's extremely variable. I've had 100+ flights in my syma X5 and never an issue where some i've flown a few times and a motor gives out. At least brushed motors are cheap :)
How much shorter do brushed motors last in comparison with brushless? I'm planning on purchasing one and will probably use it for less than half an hour once a week. Is it going to last at least a year?
Hi Dustin, I have been watching a few of your videos now and you seem to like to tinker like I do, so I have a question... do you think you could take the internals out of a hubsan 502s (main board, gyro, altimiter, gps unit etc,) and put them into an elfie? it would be the ultimate portable drone. Folding arms, gps, return to home, follow me etc, but $200 less than a dobby.
should I buy 507A or 502S? 507 has some interest points like way-point fly and cheaper than the 502s but it looks that 507 has a short fly range due to the wifi and a shorter fly time. Is that all true?
Hello, sorry I do not know if you can help me with a problem with my hubsan h502s. I made my first flight and everything worked very well, headless mode, Rth etc. But then I wanted another time to take off and could not. I already check the Rth button this off, and recalibrate several times, disconnect the drone battery and the drone only turns on the engines and tries to take off but can not. Sometimes it rises 2 seconds and falls to the ground. The motors seem to work well. I have 2 green lines of battery in the drone and 4 green lines of the command. I think the battery is fine. The drone is completely new. Do you have any idea why this is happening to me?
What is the verified range of the Hubsan X4 H502S FPV Desire? What is its max altitude and distance with FPV? Do you think if extend the legs and place a Run-cam with a 3D Printed Gimbal it would work.
I wouldn't do much modding to this since it is brushed motors and any weight added will speed motor failure rate. Get the H501s brushless if you can for more power and longevity.
hi dustin, whats the maximum range distance between the controller and the x4, if the signal is lost with the controller batteries or distances does it return to home automatically?
Yes, but be careful. If the fail safe is accidentally activated by switch, interference or controller power loss, as with all GPS quads it will try to go up in RTH mode and crash into the ceiling.
I know this is a year old review but a question about these gps remotes and regular remotes..Do they need to be in line of sight of the drones to work..Thanks
+Pete391 no but the more obstructions will effect the signal received for telemetry. Just depends on material and how much of it in between. Good news is that if signal is severed the drone has it's launch point logged and will return to it even if you turn the controller off
Thanks for the reply..I wasnt sure if like you flew behind a tree or something if you would lose control...I just orderd this drone and wasnt wanting to lose it first time I tried fly it...Thanks
My son 10 year old flew his Hubsan X4 H502s Desire all weekend on our vacation and when he returned home he tried to read the microSD from the quadcopter and there were no video or photos recorded on the microSD card. He thought he was pressing the photo and video buttons correctly. Is there something he is not doing in order to save the videos and and photos while flying? Does he need to put a microSD card into the transmitter as well?
We've tried everything: reformatting the micro SD card, changing batteries, turning on and off the camera and video- nothing seems to be working. There is still no data on the card when we put it in the sd card reader. There, also is no red LED light flashing on the transmitter when he hits the video button. The red lights flash on the drone, but that is it. I think the camera in the drone must be broken. Probably going to send it back for a replacement. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Mine was delivered today WITH a collapsable visor, so apparently they listened to you. Nice.
That's awesome. Glad they are including them now.
I want this as a hiking selfie drone. Small enough to fit in a day pack, just take the props off. GPS position hold and follow me mode, plus FPV for under $200!

just purchased this waiting for it too turn up great review really clear
Thanks. Some what interesting. I know that it has everything in the package but I was expecting a little less money. Nice review.
I purchased that sun shade for my 501, snaps right in and works perfect.
Maybe the best reviewer on youtube . Thanks for your contribution : )
Totally agree. Maybe the best qc reviewer! 👍
Brought this recently. It now does come with a sunguard.

just bought one .on the back of your excellent video+quadcopter 101 of course
and they know supply a sun visor
Hubsan must have been listening because my H502S came with a sun shade for the TX.
Waltkat mine did too👌
My x4 did too.
I agree about the sun shades because every other company gives you one but hubsan. I mean I'm sure it's not going to make them go broke.
+Ian Rice 👍
you can get a sunshade
Ian Rice My H502S came with a non-folding sun shade for the TX.
Waltkat oh ok that's good. My h501s didn't come with one. glad you got one :)
They changed i guess i got a h502s last week came with sunshade and Lipo batt pack for remote so i dodnt need batteries.

Hi Dustin. :-) What a great video. I just bought the X4 and your video was much more helpful, than the paper instruction. Thank you so much. :-)
thanks for review, just ordered mine from Banggood.com! So pumped for its arrival!!
Did you find any battery damage by draining the battery out?
Mine came today and it had a sunscreen in the spareparts box. I guess they heard you LOL.
And is the drone very reliable because it takes a fairly long time to receive the satillites and calibrate
And remember black screws to A propeller & silver screws hook up B propeller.
congratulations on 20k subs

I had this review on in the background and it was almost unbearably annoying and I couldn't pay what little attention I had to give because of the wind. You can easily make a windscreen for a mic by the way.
Awesome video as always. It is a very nice quad. Thanks
can you do a full tutorial on how to put on the 6 satellites because i have found no good tutorials on it that go in full depth
As it as no obsistical obvoidance It needs a set altitude and a clear 'Home' to avoid hills. I tjink
A long review, which is good for ME. How long will the motors last? I have a brushed Pro boat Impulse 17 Acceleration makes it hot, not top speed. Do you have to stay in one place with headless mode?
I guess that it connects to phone for location. Does it fly faster in one direction?
Can you buy spare motors?
Great video and review Dustin. I didn't see the flight time posted in the video. Can you confirm the flight time of your test flight?
+flyercan Sorry about that. I'll have a look at the raw vid and add it up.
What the hell is audio doing on a drone? Can you program the controller. Hold great for windy conditions.
It is ashame it hasn't got eco location.
so this is perfect for a beginner would u say
Yes, If you didn't want to spend the extra for the larger 501s version with brushless motors, this one is perfect.
How do you think this compares to the JXD 509G?
This was great for a starter. Thanks!
gr8 video what was the flight time?
Thx Dod.
my first video of yours and great work I liked and subbed
Question?? Is the H502S compatible with the Hubsan X4 phone app???
I cant find the H502S on the app anywhere. Thank You for your time. Great reviews
I think the sd slot on the remote is for the x507a which doesnt have a card slot, something I heard so please dont quote me
DUDE thanks i loved all of you videos i am going to buy this drone do you recommend me to nuy another drone or what? please reply me
Eslam alking did u buy this drone lookimg to buy my son it
Buy all the drones.
For travel these look good and compact to easy carry.. which would you recommend for photography quad, this or the 501s ? For a newbie..
The "Original" Sun Shade sells for about $4 - strange they do not include it in the box.
Another great vid DD...
What's the model num of the non-GPS version?
Will you be doing a vid of this non GPS ver?
You mean the non FPV version..sorry. It's the 502E. Yes, I have reviewed. Just need to edit and post.
I'm assuming you mean the H502E. Will that review be coming out soon?
Dustin, Outstanding channel and love your videos, I am new, Is this a good flier for a beginner?. I have experience in cars, trucks and planes...But never a quad?. What would you recommend for 250 bucks and below. I don't want to buy one and then outgrow it too fast? Thanks
How is the quality of the video this quad records? I know it has GPS to hold it study but without a gimbal do you get the jello look to your video? Thanks for the great review you did for this quad.
Being a coreless motor, how much time do you think it'll take before the motors actually burn out??
It's extremely variable. I've had 100+ flights in my syma X5 and never an issue where some i've flown a few times and a motor gives out. At least brushed motors are cheap :)
Can l use a High Performance Upgrade Lipo battery , 7.4 3400mAh. ?
I have a new Hubsan H 501 ss pro drone
Thank You .
Thumbs Up on your vidios .
dudtin love your vid man i am a pretty new subscriber but so far love the vids keep up the good work
make sure the flight mode isnt in normal, that limits the commands at 60%, my x4 rise very fast
Hello dustin. This quad alerts you when have to "return to home" when the battery is low?
kfk1998 yes
i forgot, excellent video im a new sub. how is the video quality? enought good?
how long was the charging time after the complete usage of the battery
Jacques van der Merwe 30 40 min
Can the husband 502s to record some videos?
Great review dustin!!! You should of tried max speed in altitude hold mode, I believe its faster! 😄
My drone wobbles when I fly in wind, and it driffs when there is no wind. But in high alttitude it is more stable is that regular?
How much shorter do brushed motors last in comparison with brushless? I'm planning on purchasing one and will probably use it for less than half an hour once a week. Is it going to last at least a year?
Full Review of the X4 H502s which you can find here: goo.gl/LOmKNj
cool
does it have micro sd slot?
Dustin Dunnill , how can u get the hubsan 502e x4 desire to record and take pics on the memory card. Also, could I add FPV to it. Thanks
Dustin Dunnill g
best reviewer ever
Kind of sound likes this for what it is intended to be, a good cheap runaround ...any naysayers ?
there seems to be a fpv version available : hubsan x4 502t , no test yet.
Hi Dustin, i like to know if the wl toys v666 quadcopter 7.4v 1200mah battery will fit on the Hubson X4 H502s thank you.
it can but the h502s is in 610MAH and it can be dangerous
Hi Dustin, I have been watching a few of your videos now and you seem to like to tinker like I do, so I have a question... do you think you could take the internals out of a hubsan 502s (main board, gyro, altimiter, gps unit etc,) and put them into an elfie? it would be the ultimate portable drone. Folding arms, gps, return to home, follow me etc, but $200 less than a dobby.
Awesome drone, I am looking forward to buy one. Do you think it is worth buying it? Thanks for answear in advance. :D
Hi..which is better 2 or 3 blades props for this drone?
Which one you recommend if compare to flying 3d X6?
should I buy 507A or 502S? 507 has some interest points like way-point fly and cheaper than the 502s but it looks that 507 has a short fly range due to the wifi and a shorter fly time. Is that all true?
Thanks for this. Just purchased one.
+Clover Street Right on, your welcome
How do I start the motors when they don't want to start after calibration and 6 satellites?
What is the verified range of the Hubsan X4 H502S FPV Desire? What is its max altitude and distance with FPV? Do you think if extend the legs and place a Run-cam with a 3D Printed Gimbal it would work.
I wouldn't do much modding to this since it is brushed motors and any weight added will speed motor failure rate. Get the H501s brushless if you can for more power and longevity.
While stock what is the range?
Even though it's been 6 years, I have a question about the 502s remote Use together501s Is it possible?
What size micro cards are you using on this Drone, control panel and drone .????
Cheers Mark
hi dustin, whats the maximum range distance between the controller and the x4, if the signal is lost with the controller batteries or distances does it return to home automatically?
can u fly this inside without gps this looks like the one I would need to have the follow me mood and the gps and altitude hold and all mood
So you can fly that threw the fp camera without seeing it
Hi. recently I bought a drone and can not pass the calibration number two. As I can make this work?
+Leandro Seoane maybe your compass or accelerometer is defective.
Does he need to put a microSD card into the transmitter as well?
you need to turn off the camera before turning off the quad to save recordings as far i know, hope this helps
Thanks.
try a new sd card with lower capacity could be a faulty sd card ive had that ,what size of sd card you using ?
The card we have is 64 GB.... but it formatted fine on the computer?? What about the red LED light on the transmitter not coming on? Should it?
not so sure on that but the size of the card sounds a bit on the large side for a quadcopter usually they are no more than 4gb to 32gb
wish you would have out drone footage
