Using my wife's iPad and account: Excellent review/tutorial on the Hubsan H501S. I've owned mine for over a year, never had to do a firmware upgrade, although the original Transmitter did die on me; It first lost 5.8Ghz video ( black screen ) and within 10 mins., the 2.4Ghz controller module died. I had done the antenna upgrade ( Flat panel for 5.8G & external 10dbi antenna for the 2.4G ) . Also did the battery mod with 3s LiPo battery with small voltage regulator with LED readout set to 6.9vdc to replace the expensive AA batteries. Because I'm afraid that doing the mods ( antenna & LiPo ) may have caused the Controller failure, I've yet to do these mods to the new replacement transmitter . This is the standard TX, not the advanced. Do you think that doing either of these mods caused the failure?? I'm NASA cert. Solderer and was very careful in doing mods, no shortcuts, nor cheap parts. Anyone have this problem?? I would like to do the mods again, but for now waiting on further input.
jnyc10306 : I think that you're right on, jnyc10306. I've ordered the Hubsan 501s transceiver mod antennas. I'll continue using the rechargeable batteries in the transceiver, even though they put out less voltage than the standard alkaline "DD" cells. Thank you for replying!!
I don't know if I like the video or music better! Just received this upgraded transmitter for my 501s. Could you tell me where or how I should have the 5.8 dish pointed? Can I turn it in a 360 without twisting any wires? After screwing it on its not even with TX. I don't want to damage this already so was wondering on proper adjustments. Just got this baby in July 2018 for $200. I bought the antenna mods, sun shade, Li po batt for the remote, (4) replacement brushless motors, (2) more factory 2700 mhr batts and replacement props for $300 total. This drone is awesome. It goes 820 feet high out of the box and a claimed 300m in range, up to 3000m with the antenna mods. A simple firmware hack removes the limits which I don't recommend. The 1080p camera takes awesome stills and I love this drone.
I'm new to drones at 70 years old, and know absolutely nothing about them. I have purchased a used H501s which has had this mod fitted by the previous owner, and I didn't know which way round to fit the antennas, this video has solved my mystery. Great and thanks, I will be back here again soon.

My most humble apology. Somehow I got the price mixed up with another quad copter. The actual price difference is around $40.00. I still don't think the configuration changes are worth it.
Great info video! I have the white gold, I just wished I got the better transmitter. I did install the antenna mod kit that gives you both external antennas. I have not done the battery mod for the transmitter because for some reason my AA batteries seem to last a L O N G time, at least 10 flights already for rechargeable AAs. My next step is to do the firmware update,except I'm a little nervous to do it but, I want the the lights to stay on steady. Keep up the good work!!
Any ideas if an upgraded FPV2 transmitter (with the widely available 14 dBi panel antenna) is equivalent in distance to the standard (newer) FPV1 model (which has antenna booster already built-in)? If they're equal, I'd rather have the FPV2 with the larger LCD...

Great video and review buddy. I had the standard H501s and it was my very first quad as on a very low budget. I loved it and had about 20 flights out of it then on final flight even on a full battery she just dropped from about 40 meters up and smashed into the ground snapping arms on it. I was devastated as was just getting use to it and my 12 year old Son loved a couple of flights. Anyway, with loving it that much I want to purchase another one but get the advanced like yours as though original transmitter was a bit bulky and had to hang it on a lanyard around my neck. A couple of questions if you don't mind? Can you take the sunscreen off if you wanted to as mine came with one you click together, then click onto transmitter. Also are the thumb sticks made of metal as they look it? When pushing also on sticks if you let go, do they spring back to centre or stay where you pushed them to. Well thanks for your time and look forward to hearing from you soon and I am going to start saving for one. How many volts does the battery hold? I got this and the drone is amazing it's just as soon as I got it, I charged the battery for 2 hours and it was still red. So I kept it charging for 1 day and it was still red so I decided to start this baby up. When I did, It said ONLY 7.3-4 volts and the battery juice level of the drone was 1 BAR and I only got about 5-7 MINUTES of flying time. I charged it AGAIN for a DAY and it STILL was only like at 1 bar and 7.3-4 volts. What is the problem? (I bought it new but opened, not flown though) If I could get a reply that would be great. Miller Ingram t1 and the t2 are for the gimbal on h109s that's what this controller is originally for you can also get the android h7000 touch screen controller but its not cheap

Any recommendations / tips about the return home and trees ? Example, If I were to launch it say 25 meters up from start and the go forward above the trees .. would return home take that same path back or would it come straight back and smack a tree that I originally went over ?
The drone will return at the altitude it was at when the signal was lost or RTH was initiated if it is above 10 meters. If it is below 10 meters it will climb to 10 meters before returning so if the trees were higher than 10 meters say a prayer.

DonD512 200m safe I've had 400 from the top of a hill you can get the antenna mods for the normal controller and it will comfortably do a kilometre

the legs are to low on them you can't land on rough ground , even to low for not so very tall grass , I'm sure would be hard on propellers I guess
it can be but you just have to plan where you will land/take off

I live out in the middle of the desert. It has a lot of brush I was still able to fly and land it pretty good.
Also you can mod it to have longer legs.

ohhh... so the toilet bowl effect problem because not calibrate before fly or..?
Because of GPS compass getting off on the location signal coordinates so it starts searching. ( toilet bowl ).
