for those that don't know the camera sticks out on the SS version because it has a small lens that sometimes comes in the Box that you put on your camera which helps you with your resolution and Shine from the sun when talking pictures
The footage on my h501s is better than on the h501ss its like they upgraded the quad and added a cheaper camera. My h501ss speed in gps lock is 5.2 mps and my h501s in gps lock moves at 4.2mps. The h501ss in my opinion I still believe to be the better quad just because it faces you in rth and it has circle me mode👍
The lens doesn't stick out. The lens and camera is still the same. What sticks out is a neutral density filter which is glued to the lens (you can pry it loose if you want to remove it).
I had the standard 501s but it fell out of sky for no reason and smashed. I loved it to bits so now wanting the advanced version as love the transmitter. I head that the transmitter eats AA batteries like anything. Do you know roughly how many flight you will get of the quad before the AA batteries need changing? Also can the sun screen come off? Look forward to your reply.
Nice video, you say about the fun factor you had gps mode turned on, if you turn it off and use full manual mode, it so much better to fly if people are qualified enough it will travel much faster and more agile
Please beautifully tell me which is the original version of the hubsan drones 501s, that there are several models, how do they make the difference between them, what is the color of the original packaging? .. thanks ..... respect
That's an ND filter sticking out on the camera lens gives better picture in bright sunny conditions its glued there I tried to remove mine cause it's very dark flying at sunset or cloudy days but I'm afraid it's glued to the camera lens and might break it.
Good video thanks. So I bought a 501ss about a month ago. Am I right in saying that the RTH position is determined by the location of the Tx when you arm the motors? So if you're standing on your patio when arming the motors and the quad is 10m out on your lawn, when you click on RTH it flies back to the patio position and not back to the lawn point. Appreciate your reply - Thanks
Many Thanks for this detailed video, I am a bit confused about the model, I clicked on the link you provided and noticed that some one asked a question if it is upgraded to HS501SS, the gearbest answer was "No, this item is Hubsan H501S" I really want to buy it but I need to be certain that it is the right one. (gearbest name it as "Hubsan H501S X4 Brushless Drone - Advanced Version". Thank you.
+furat52 Hi, thanks for your feedback and question. If the question posed was whether it's a HS 501SS then I'd imagine that GearBest were saying it's just H501S because there is no HS501. It's the H501SS you'll be getting. I doubt if there's any older models in stock at GB as they sell so many! I hope that helps?
Thank you for your reply and sorry for my mistyping, the exact question was "Has this been upgraded to H501SS yet" , another question has been asked from another person "Could you tell if this is the H501S or H501SS" and again gearbest responded "It is the H501S".
+furat52 Hi, I think there may be some difficulty with GearBest answering your question in the way you would like because technically speaking there's no such model as the H501S-S. If you look at the Hubsan website they promote this as the H501S and there's no mention of the H501S-S. The box I received mine in is fully marked up with H501S and the only indicator of it being the SS model is on the tx and the label in the battery compartment. There's a visual clue on the underside too, which is explained in the Hubsan "difference between ..." video, but that's it. It's a great quad but the marketing of the upgrade model sucks! It's been a while since I made my video and GB must have sold hundreds by now. I can't say for certain but I'd be pretty surprised if you got anything other than the H501S-S now. It's on Special Offer at the moment too :-) goo.gl/ptGjwy
-is it possible to tilt up litle while the drone going ?? because i notice that the camera of h501a is always little down like bird eye. the horizon line are not at center of image - do you recommand me to use it on my short film project ? RÉPONDRE
This maybe the h501s. . Only way to tell is the barcode/motherboard through quads belly air vents at this point because I am sure the protruding camera is the 501s
Very informative video - I have one of these on order. One complaint, though... Your scene 'wipes' are very obtrusive, and take quite a while to complete. Please consider doing a plain fade between shots, or something similar. One thing I noticed, when you hit the RTH switch, your quad appeared to turn around, and was actually showing you on the FPV screen as it returned. Watched another reviewer today (I think it was Dustin Dunnil) who found that his always turned away and *backed* towards its GPS home point. Strange that they would act so differently...
+Phil Buglass Hi Phil. I think you'll find that the firmware Dustin was using was an earlier version. The latest update corrected that and automatically turned the H501S to face the tx I hope you get the H501S-S as it's much better (in my opinion) than the earlier incarnation. Thanks for your feedback on the wipes. I'll bare that in mind for future reviews.
The order details don't specify the extra '-S'. It's the black/gold one, and the 'Professional', which I think they used to call 'Advanced'? Not sure. Anyway, should be here Monday!
+Phil Buglass Hi Phil. Where did you buy yours from? The only seller I know for certain that are distributing the H501SS are GearBest goo.gl/ptGjwy although you're right that most don't specify the model changes.
Yes, I ordered from GearBest, although I did look at Amazon for a couple of models I was considering (maybe not this one, but don't remember) and they often had them, but at substantial extra cost. May be worth paying a bit more for faster delivery and easy returns, but not *that* much. The company sent me a shipping notification with a tracking number, but after 5 days the tracking number was showing up as "not found", so I sent them an email. Decent service - they got back within 24 hours to say it would be delivered tomorrow. They also gave a link to a different tracking service, but unfortunately, that site was all in Chinese...
Not that it's a good idea to fly farther then 300 to 400 meters but in open field it can on average get around 800 to over 1000 meters and what's cool is the 2 battery parallel mode which gives me a flight time of around 30 minutes more or less
Great Video, Thanks for uploading it. Do you think I could use my advanced controller from the H501S version & use it with my S-S version - the firmware is different, Do you think there is there a common firmware for this controller? Hubsan don't answer. Many Thanks .............
+Brighton Rock Hi, thanks for your feedback. I can't give you a 100% guarantee on this answer but as far as I know the H906A controller is exactly the same for both models. I'm sure it would just be a case of rebinding the H501SS to the tx. The only downside is that if you wanted to buy the STANDARD version of the H501S and use your existing tx you'd have to make sure that it's the upgraded H501S-S and not old stock. If you use the purchase link I've provided on the review with the discount code you can get the H501S-S Advanced at under $220/£180. Hope that helps? Paul
+Amy Braswell Hi Amy. The balance charger that comes with the H501s is for 2 cell (7.4v) batteries only. As the suggested Tx LiPo in the video is 3 cell (11.1v) you'll need a different charger.
hi Paul. you mentioned something about attaching a larger fpv monitor. I wonder if you can point me to a video or some documentation how to go about this. hopefully, it should replace the smaller LCD of the tx
Hi, this is the video link I saw it on: ruclips.net/video/ZEICjWzZ9wE/видео.html . There's more FPV footage unfortunately than modding advice but it'll give you an idea what the poster has achieved. Paul
A bit confused about 5.8ghz antenna. Isn't this antenna largely a directional antenna? Wouldn't you lose fpv reception if you weren't facing the drone head on?
+Matt Williams Hi Matt. Sorry but you're going to need to help me with this one. The answer is Yes, but sadly I'm not sure what you're specifically referring to. Is it something I said or did in the video or a general question? The antenna 'flopped' a bit near the end (my fault for not tightening it) but the reception arc is quite wide when it's facing forwards and it didn't affect the performance. Naturally if you wear FPV goggles you shouldn't turn your back on it for long but in all honesty, why would you :-)? I'm sorry if I've completely missed the point of your question ... Paul
Hi there im looking to purchase this as a first outdoor drone for my son would it make any difference getting the advanced model or is the normal model great enough. Cheers
+imanishay Hi. With the Advanced model at $225 goo.gl/ptGjwy I'd buy that if it's in your price range. If not the standard model is just as good and I don't think there's any difference in functionality. I'm sure he wouldn't be unhappy with either, but he'd probably prefer the appearance of the Advanced model tx. I hope that helps?
+Suazzz Hi, I don't know if the Firmware is better as it's still relatively new. +Gazz W Hi.Thank you for your comment and feedback. I like to try out different things with each video but I'll certainly take on board your thoughts. I'm not sure if you've ever filmed and edited something like this but it's sometimes difficult to know what effect (if any) is best to use when splicing multiple clips and angles together. Some viewers like them whereas others, like yourself, clearly don't. I'm still very much an amateur with filming/editing and I'm still learning so comments like yours, good or bad, are always welcome.

great explanation of what every thing on the controller does! The manual that come with it doesn't do so well.

Just spend $13 and modern the base TX and you will have all the benefits of the more expensive TX...but with a much better display!
My X4 H501S advanced, only 300mts range. Should i update a firmware? Both ( TX + drone?)
Good video thanks. So I bought a 501ss about a month ago. Am I right in saying that the RTH position is determined by the location of the Tx when you arm the motors? That’s a lens filter that comes off if you haven’t figured it out.
Since the 501ss has the 501a board will it interact with the hubsan app like Waypoints?
Thanks for the reviews been looking at getting this drone after watching your reviews I’ve now ordered one 😁
Great review much love👌

Why the counter of video time is green? I've seen tutorials, where the counter is red. Thanks

best quad for 200ish? better then traxxas? favorite for this price range?
Instead of Returning to Home Mode, can the drone be instructed to Return to Controller?, I`m a hill walker.

hello, my name Quang.
I would like to ask what is the model of the control plane he introduced
thank you very much
Have a good day
Very cool hubson

7.5v on TX battery......................??!!
+Mike Holt Ha ha! Well spotted Mike. The 11.1v was on charge when I recorded the review. I was hoping it would go unnoticed ... ☺
Haha! No worries! My first flight was at 8 and a bit volts as 4 of the tx batteries were virtually flat (now using 3S lipo).
Annoying screen wipes, detracts from the intended purpose of showing the drone going through its paces.
I'm still very much an amateur with filming/editing and I'm still learning so comments like yours, good or bad, are always welcome.
video transition effect is very annoying to watch. Next time, use dissolve
