I didn’t hear any sales pitch or even a recommendation on what disk our broke butt should buy... For those of us who don’t have sponsors the flap disk trick is pretty good also enjoy the fact that sometimes you can make a video that’s only three minutes long and it’s all right!
I'll agree. Flap Discs have been known to come apart at 11,000 rpm and when they do, it ain't pretty. Type 27, Depressed Center Grinding Wheels may just be the least respected shop tool yet can bite very hard when abused beyond reason.
Run it against a 9" grinder, free wheeling. At a 45° and then turn your 4" upside down and run it again at a 45° again and at what ever angle you want you can put a sharp edge on a flapper. Way faster than concrete.
Every bit of the skit had me in giggles but when you climbed up to the top of the stairs to make sure there's some serious throwdown, THAT got me good.
0:20 one problem here that I sorted on my last grinder is the guard prevents you from working near flat wearing out the end of your disc. I cut out a long narrow triangle on each open side of my guard and closed it up to taper the end. Result is I can now grind at a shallower angle.👍🇬🇧
Abusing any grinder like in this video though will destroy them regardless if they are brushless or otherwise because you can still burn up the armature and core as well as mess up the gears inside the case. I've got to where i can make even the Harbor Freight cheap crap last me for a couple years with just Brush Replacements by simply using them correctly. I've got one Brushless DeWalt ive had for a bout year now I'm trying out to see how they actually last but, ive not used them enough to be 100% sure if they are better or worse quite yet. Ive always used the ones with Brushes and in my experience you just use them properly and replace the Brushes every so often as they wear out they last. Makita and Ryobi both also makes very good grinders as well and tend to be a touch cheaper if you shop around and same goes for them just buy replacement Brushes and they will last for many many years decades even if you dont abuse them.
We always used a lathe to cut back the backing plate to give the edge of the flaps more flex for polishing out tig t joints on food grade applications....works good to just get more life out of it like this as well
At least once a week in welding school. They charge out the ass for what was no more than a machine rental plus welding rods supplied, and the expect us to supply our own grinding discs, etc. while we're already broke from paying for their overpriced "class". Man I wish I had just spent that money on a good Mig/Tig/Stick combo machine and learned in my garage. It'd be cheaper and I'd have a machine in the end.
It's not often that a RUclips video delivers exactly what it says it will. And with no self promoting "fill". You even used the hardest material to fettle. Diamond hard, hot rolled plate mild steel scale. Succinct Clear Simple. Delivered. Thank you. A superb job.
*Bonus Tip:* When grinding down the disc on concrete (and any other cutting/grinding task with plastic or synthetic materials) do it where the waste can't fall, blow, wash, or be swept into stormwater drains, or soil. Performing these tasks with a dust extractor, or even basic vacuum cleaner, or inside a workshop, prevents microplastics and other harmful material from further contaminating the environment. 🙂
The first half of this vid brought tears 😭 to my eyes I was laughing so hard... Neat trick to get extra life out of a disk. Could a diamond grinding wheel dresser be less aromatic to do the same as concrete?
A similar trick applyes if you use one of these on wood and the sap plugs up it's surface. If your wheel is thick enough you still have good sandpaper underneath the worn out one you just have to strip the face back a bit. Thanks for the video. Keep up the good work!
Good tip, but what really pisses me off is if you consider the surface area of all the material vs how much you use its RIPOFF CENTRAL you should be able to sand/grind until you hit plastic holding it together. I have learned to pull apart old ones and you the single squares for doing small jobs works great
Saw a video where a guy snipped off all the glazed bits and basically had a new flap wheel. I tried it and it works, but you need the right kind of scissors otherwise its slow going
Cinder block works well and can also be used to knock old grit off and bring up fresh grit especially if you're using any of the newer diamond grit discs the absolutely best thing for diamond grinding and cutting discs that seem dull is to hit up a tile supply shop as most hardware stores don't carry these and ask for a diamond resin dressing block I use these on diamond blades when they seem dull it knocks off the dull stuff and brings fresh grit up to the surface so your blade is sharp again
I use these disks to free hand some shapes and contours on wood but you have to occasionally use a wire brush and clean off the resin build up or else they get caked up really bad but they work great on wood too.
I use a dewalt grinding and cutting grinder to make my final cuts on mason stone when I’m cleaning up the steps of the customers house. What do you recommend I do when I can’t run off to Lowe’s to grab a new blade to finish my clean round edge cuts?
Yes that is a great trick. When I was working in a large shop we would do something close, we would take the flap disk over to the 40 rock pedestal grinder and reshape the edge. Please use respiratory protection. Thanks for the video.
Hello, A hack I learned about soft pads emery bands/belts etc:- Grab an old plastic grocery bag scrunch it into a ball and pass it over the running pad/sanding belt and it will clean in between the bonded grit particles. If it's worn out it won't help, but if it's just dirty (loaded)it might just do the trick. Be careful
I've been doing this for years, I have a sharp edge where a piece of 1/4 plate sticks out off of my bench that I just cut the plastic backing off of the disk instead of grinding it down on concrete
use a sharp piece of steel in a vise and cut into the back of the disc. There are discs that are designed for this, but ive used the technique on pferd and others
As a person who only started learning to use the grinder yesterday, I envy your confidence with a grinder shown in that intro... No matter how dangerous it looked xD
The most important part of this was "make sure your grinder guard is on" I have lost count of the number of youtube channels (some of the big ones) that don't have the guard on while their fingers sit half an inch behind a cut of wheel waiting to slip in or the wheel shatter and throw pieces into their face!!!!!
my effectiveness needs of a disc are done WAY before they shrink in size. When I grind rust with these they load up way before burning down far enough. I wonder if this refresh would still work though.
I keep a dressing stone for a grinding wheels in the old tool box. Cheap investment and works great. It works great to side dress chop saw wheels, straighten the well on a bench grinder. Great to unclog a stone used for something soft. These are just a great investment they help keep your grinding wheel from overheating caused by loading up.

the "Walter" brand discs with the orange plastic backing were made for a technique like this, especially to get more "hangover" for inside radius blends etc
Giving it a thumbs up. could have cut the 1st minute from the video (a bit surplus) but the rest was 100% great. Fantastic advice to get the last piece of life out of the disk. I always make sure I have a few on hand as I use these more than the grinding discs. Many thanks.
I take a screw driver or scraper and go between each flap when there full of paint or bondo, , tends to make them work a little longer, I use the hard grinder on welds too as flap discs don’t last at all on that
Good trick, and works in a pinch. here are the two biggest things I’ve personally learned: 1)Those discs are actually designed to cut from the inside out, not outside in like everybody uses them. They’ll last longer and cut faster. I know that doesn’t always fit with the actual task at hand. So it’s def not a fix all. 2) next time the old dewalt or Milwaukee gives up, drop the extra money on a variable speed grinder. They’re worth the investment in an extremely short time frame. Spin that disc at about 5-6k instead of 10, and it will bite harder and not glaze like most inevitably do.
The very BEST flap discs. Companies offer to sponsor TFS with free abrasives, but I always buy these because these are the best!
