That's what I do to my grinding wheels!
That is what is called the "emergency reserve maneuver". Not designed for daily production work, but when your tit is in the wringer, it works. Well done.
Never tried the fatmax. I prefer the Walter technology (stainless steel) or just better yet use mainly metabo disks with a 3M backing pad.
Oh, & if you were using a Metabo grinder.. I would have slammed that Dewalt off the concrete for effect instead of the dead flap wheel.
What does this actually do?
The whole industry uses pferd or 3M, but, hey, who are they compared to a youtuber?
My grinding skills increase everyday but only because of my lack of welding skills.
What's the old saying....?
"A grinder and paint, makes me the welder I ain't!" 😬🤣
A grinder and paint because a welder I aint.
They would drug test you for running a grinder like that lol
I would drug test him for having a guard on his grinder.
@@mikefrech1123 hahahahahah for real
It would show positive on meth and probably more

I think this is the 300 pound Gorilla AvE is always talking about.
Hahaha loool, good one
Lolol
Lots of apprentice marks on that one.
🤣😂🤣
200 years from now, AvE's grandchildren ask:
-daddy what are those brown cuts into concrete in front of that house?
AvE daddy:
- claw marks from a 300lb gorilla
“Go to an inconspicuous spot” ..... takes one step out the door. 😂
And that, children, is why you don't smoke crack before using a grinder.
The start looks like the apprentice trying to back up his “8 solid years” of fabrication😂
Had a guy come in the workshop saying he's been a metalworker his whole life, son starting new business, rings us the next day to ask how to tighten a gate spring, week later his son came in and said he broke his wrist from tightening said get spring.
Thanks for this! Pro tip: I like re-shape my flap disc on my mother-in-law's driver side door panel so I don't mess up the concrete outside my house.
🤣🤣🤣 lol.
Brick or cinder block. 70¢-$2
So like use the neighbors sidewalk?
Hahaha
So you live at her house or she lives with you ?
Nice trick . I'll try it out on the neighbors driveway .

Just buy a brick or cinder block. 70¢-$2
@@icemanhunter1 That's hilarious. We must have the same neighbor, stop by for a beer.
Pickup a boron wheel dressing stick and it does the same thing with messing up the floor or drive way. The boron is so tough that I have been using the same one for about 15 years and it will dress a bench grinder wheel as well. 1”X1”X6”. $5 at MSC.
Don't be a boron
I can hear the doctor at the ER now: "How exactly did you get shrapnel from a grinding disk in your guts again?"
Inspired by Rammstein!
I'll agree. Flap Discs have been known to come apart at 11,000 rpm and when they do, it ain't pretty. Type 27, Depressed Center Grinding Wheels may just be the least respected shop tool yet can bite very hard when abused beyond reason.
The intro made me physically uncomfortable.
Me too. I had to quit watching
It hurt my soul.

Good way to wreck grinder bearings or lose an eye from shrapnel
Don’t let this guy anywhere near your stuff he even wrecks the concrete I seen the other video where he butchered a beautiful mini Lathe
Waiting for that disc to grab his loose shirt.
I feel like the first 60 seconds should of been in black n white with random slows and freeze frames. Definitely infomercial material 👍
I felt like the 1st 60 seconds should have been 10 seconds.
And sped up a lil with the Benny Hill theme Yakkety Sax playing :p
Thanks for the honesty it’s nice to see that someone can tell the truth about getting some free products.. I didn’t hear any sales pitch or even a recommendation on what disk our broke butt should buy... For those of us who don’t have sponsors the flap disk trick is pretty good also enjoy the fact that sometimes you can make a video that’s only three minutes long and it’s all right!
Every bit of the skit had me in giggles but when you climbed up to the top of the stairs to make sure there's some serious throwdown, THAT got me good.
Him ; buy a couple extra when you're running low
Me ; buy a extra brick to save the ones I got🤔
🤣
Had an employee that ground like that!!! Of course we banned him from any power tools after that 😅
Right on
In the words of Al from “Tool Time”...”I don’t think that’s a very good idea Tim” lol that hack is awesome though!
Us too. The boss took the long to fire him. He munted discs at three times the speed of anybody else
Since he just had one hand, one eye and half nose ?
That's what they tell you to do on some of them. It's not a trick. Just read the flap discs sometimes. Tells you.
I would say DeWalt makes a pretty good grinder if it lived through his hands
Ive killed 3 dewalt grinders in 2 years, i have a makita 18v now amd its lasting me for 3 years already
2 dewalts were corded one's, one cordless one
Try Metabo and thank me later🙃
Abusing any grinder like in this video though will destroy them regardless if they are brushless or otherwise because you can still burn up the armature and core as well as mess up the gears inside the case. I've got to where i can make even the Harbor Freight cheap crap last me for a couple years with just Brush Replacements by simply using them correctly. I've got one Brushless DeWalt ive had for a bout year now I'm trying out to see how they actually last but, ive not used them enough to be 100% sure if they are better or worse quite yet. Ive always used the ones with Brushes and in my experience you just use them properly and replace the Brushes every so often as they wear out they last.
Makita and Ryobi both also makes very good grinders as well and tend to be a touch cheaper if you shop around and same goes for them just buy replacement Brushes and they will last for many many years decades even if you dont abuse them.
@@Mr.Phoreskin you talking about the metabo that's now made in china? Don't think so.
Run it against a 9" grinder, free wheeling. At a 45° and then turn your 4" upside down and run it again at a 45° again and at what ever angle you want you can put a sharp edge on a flapper. Way faster than concrete.
Oh that beginning... when a soap opera meets a grinder.
This is a great trick I always use! Walter flap disc even have a line indicating where the maximum trim amount is.
My colleague used to treat the tools like this, he was stripped of his rights to any piece of machinery after that. It was too expensive, my god.....
there are some cases, specially in historic restoration that we preffer to use those used flap disks as they eat way less than new ones
Use sanding pads

@@OprichnikStyle haha
Good tip, but what really pisses me off is if you consider the surface area of all the material vs how much you use its RIPOFF CENTRAL you should be able to sand/grind until you hit plastic holding it together.
I have learned to pull apart old ones and you the single squares for doing small jobs works great
Saw a video where a guy snipped off all the glazed bits and basically had a new flap wheel. I tried it and it works, but you need the right kind of scissors otherwise its slow going
*Bonus Tip:* When grinding down the disc on concrete (and any other cutting/grinding task with plastic or synthetic materials) do it where the waste can't fall, blow, wash, or be swept into stormwater drains, or soil.
Performing these tasks with a dust extractor, or even basic vacuum cleaner, or inside a workshop, prevents microplastics and other harmful material from further contaminating the environment. 🙂
We always used a lathe to cut back the backing plate to give the edge of the flaps more flex for polishing out tig t joints on food grade applications....works good to just get more life out of it like this as well
You forgot to mention the first step where you hold your breath while surrounding yourself in a cloud of concrete dust.
Tasty silica.
0:20 one problem here that I sorted on my last grinder is the guard prevents you from working near flat wearing out the end of your disc. I cut out a long narrow triangle on each open side of my guard and closed it up to taper the end. Result is I can now grind at a shallower angle.👍🇬🇧
Just like thousands of metal workers before me and against the advice of everyone I just happily remove my guards.
35 years incedent free so far.

Hello,
A hack I learned about soft pads emery bands/belts etc:-
Grab an old plastic grocery bag scrunch it into a ball and pass it over the running pad/sanding belt and it will clean in between the bonded grit
particles. If it's worn out it won't help, but if it's just dirty (loaded)it might just do the trick.
Be careful
That's such a cool hat. It seriously makes you look way cool.
The start of this is like every infomercial ever😂
Can you do a video on how to make a railing for your loft storage area?
...or a video of the future back-surgery ?🙄😏
The first minute was actually a recording of how an apprentice use a grinder
I've low-key ground them down on a bench grinder also with them both spinning of course
Same
Why not use two flap discs, like when you open a bottle with another bottle
use a sharp piece of steel in a vise and cut into the back of the disc. There are discs that are designed for this, but ive used the technique on pferd and others
I was waiting for your shirt to get caught and the sanding discs
That’s an awesome trick I have been cutting down 3 inch rollock Sanding discs for years to get some extra life out of them works great
A 3" becomes a 2" with a worn out set of shears!!
That’s exactly what I use 👍🤘🏻😎🚗💨💨💨💨
Cinder block works well and can also be used to knock old grit off and bring up fresh grit especially if you're using any of the newer diamond grit discs the absolutely best thing for diamond grinding and cutting discs that seem dull is to hit up a tile supply shop as most hardware stores don't carry these and ask for a diamond resin dressing block I use these on diamond blades when they seem dull it knocks off the dull stuff and brings fresh grit up to the surface so your blade is sharp again
Everyone has felt that intro bit
At least once a week in welding school. They charge out the ass for what was no more than a machine rental plus welding rods supplied, and the expect us to supply our own grinding discs, etc. while we're already broke from paying for their overpriced "class".
Man I wish I had just spent that money on a good Mig/Tig/Stick combo machine and learned in my garage. It'd be cheaper and I'd have a machine in the end.
For real.. like when you have a ton of grinding to do but you only have a flapdisk. Slow painful futile process.
@@WeAreTwoDoorsDown jeez man what kinda shitty welding school did you go to? That sounds horrible
I always used a pedestal grinder. Standing to the side of course. And you're right, it stinks!
I've been doing this for years, I have a sharp edge where a piece of 1/4 plate sticks out off of my bench that I just cut the plastic backing off of the disk instead of grinding it down on concrete
I use these disks to free hand some shapes and contours on wood but you have to occasionally use a wire brush and clean off the resin build up or else they get caked up really bad but they work great on wood too.
Ive seen a video on YT where a guy took the time to trim the flaps one by one reveal new material beneath each one.
The most important part of this was "make sure your grinder guard is on" I have lost count of the number of youtube channels (some of the big ones) that don't have the guard on while their fingers sit half an inch behind a cut of wheel waiting to slip in or the wheel shatter and throw pieces into their face!!!!!
Yes that is a great trick. When I was working in a large shop we would do something close, we would take the flap disk over to the 40 rock pedestal grinder and reshape the edge. Please use respiratory protection. Thanks for the video.
I can reshape mine on my mother-in-law’s cooking - meatloaf, turkey, steak, you name it - she can make hard coal in an hour that puts 100 million years of mother nature’s work to shame...and still serve it cold.
I’m just kidding. It’s still smoldering when she serves it.
Really, I’m joking about the mother-in-law.
Wait, so you're saying we're never gonna run out of BBQ fuel?
I've never watched a less inspiring tip vid
I’ve always used an old chisel clamped down in a vise to run the edge up against. Flap disc ... it’s a love / hate relationship as they never seem to last as long as thought they would.
The first half of this vid brought tears 😭 to my eyes I was laughing so hard...
Neat trick to get extra life out of a disk. Could a diamond grinding wheel dresser be less aromatic to do the same as concrete?
It's not often that a RUclips video delivers exactly what it says it will.
And with no self promoting "fill".
You even used the hardest material to fettle. Diamond hard, hot rolled plate mild steel scale.
Succinct
Clear
Simple.
Delivered.
Thank you.
A superb job.
I use flap disc's till the nut in the middle is gone! Didnt even know they came back off!
Lmao
Oh my god, that's friggen hilarious! I almost pissed myself.
That's just funny!!!😊😊😊
na man mines welded on ,,,,HAHAHA
I just glue mine on.
Dang, I thought you were going to coat the outer 1/2” with Loctite PL600 Super Grab, then roll it around in the silica sand next to the sandblast cabinet. The RED color would be cool but is you could read Chinese, it would say “Discard long time RED is seeing shown on disc wheel round incubator to 7-11 year old operator, many more to buy happy time mostly!”
Enjoy your videos and rack of equipment. I have it somewhere in box stack with 1 1/2 car garage.
Walter flap discs are made of a plastic that easily gets trimed down and they also have a line that shows the maximum you can take off the disc.
I've done this many times. I keep a brick around the shop. And you can put a nice radius on it to reach a spot and grind evenly.
The best flap disk I have used by far is the Diablo Steel Demon. It also screws directly to the grinder, which is another plus in my opinion. Your mileage may vary.
A similar trick applyes if you use one of these on wood and the sap plugs up it's surface. If your wheel is thick enough you still have good sandpaper underneath the worn out one you just have to strip the face back a bit. Thanks for the video. Keep up the good work!
Bro, I totally was thinking at first this video should be called how Not to be an apprentice. Lol
i run them against a bench grinder , like sharpening a drill bit , gets the edge back for working in tight corners , you can under cut them too.
When you buy those disks also buy a 4x8x16 concrete block to grind on, it has many other uses too
Thumbs up for the intro! Needs to be on a two hour loop
Thx for the tip. Sounds like you’re a natural tv host. No pauses, no “ums”....good job
I use disc grinder all the time. Also burr grinder and disc sander on wood. Use steel bristle brush to vlean off the sandpaper when it gets clogged up for an extra boost. The burr grinder gets hit hard with the NAP torch and that chars all the gunk to black dust.
Crazy that the hack also stopped him handling the grinder like an absolute mad man
You need an Oz type 240Volt grinder, it sheds the disc so much faster, and throws great sparks as it melts down..
:)
You almost got me... I almost thought this was legit until I seen the guard on the grinder! Nobody uses a guard with a flap disc 😜
I like it !! When I video started I was like “wtf is this guy doing w that grinder”
I bolted a old grinding stone down to bench and use that instead of cement. Works amazing.
I havent used flap disks for 10yrs- ADVOS- perforated discs sustem by NORTON saves money , reduces heat, increases control, safer ( no flying debri) and you can see through spinning sisc
Pilgrim if you had done that in my shop you would have been told to roll up LOL. I'm old school and used the spark guard when necessary but usually remove the hindrance. A little common sense negates the need for the OSHA mandated crap. I used to chuck them (worn out flapper disk) up in a lathe with a super sharp carbide, but your system is quicker and less hassle. Another trick you can do is use a small set of hand sheers and trim each flap back a RCH after you trimmed the outside edge. By taking the time you can get three to four lifetimes out of one flapper disk. Hope this is helpful poor people have poor ways LOL.
I keep a dressing stone for a grinding wheels in the old tool box. Cheap investment and works great. It works great to side dress chop saw wheels, straighten the well on a bench grinder. Great to unclog a stone used for something soft. These are just a great investment they help keep your grinding wheel from overheating caused by loading up.
Cool trick I seen a couple years ago I got an old broken grinder wheel I use to grind my flap wheels down (I'm cheap I use them to the last)
Worn discs are great for softer materials like aluminum, or ATV plastic when this hack reaches its end. Great video-advice😎👍👊
I use a bench grinder. Also, if you grind it at an angle you can get the flaps into a tighter spot.
Great Tip buddy!!! Cheers from Venezuela. 🤓👍🏻
As a person who only started learning to use the grinder yesterday, I envy your confidence with a grinder shown in that intro... No matter how dangerous it looked xD
Good trick, and works in a pinch.
here are the two biggest things I’ve personally learned:
1)Those discs are actually designed to cut from the inside out, not outside in like everybody uses them. They’ll last longer and cut faster. I know that doesn’t always fit with the actual task at hand. So it’s def not a fix all.
2) next time the old dewalt or Milwaukee gives up, drop the extra money on a variable speed grinder. They’re worth the investment in an extremely short time frame. Spin that disc at about 5-6k instead of 10, and it will bite harder and not glaze like most inevitably do.
People who are disliking don't know this kind of disk could cost more than your workday launch here in Brasil. The poor countries liked it. 👍
If companies made the fabric erode away faster, exposing new flap abrasive material underneath, these things would useful for WAY longer. The first one to come up with faster eroding abrasive flap fabric wins.
I juat walk over to the belt sander and do the same thing. Ill also just grind the backing plate to create a "point" if I need to reach into somewhere tight. IMO, their not dead till their DEAD!
Thanks guys I go through hundreds of these things boat building. Cheers Rossco
That intro felt like one of those bad infomercial, “Thanks, Obama” memes. 😂
OMG! That intro killed me!!! That was awesome.
I'm gonna try that trick soon, thank you.But never hit that on the table,I got hit in the arm from a piece of a Warrior flap at a stainless shop someone else was using.
I used a table grinder and then turn on the the hand grinder and grind the edge off. Worked great.
I take a screw driver or scraper and go between each flap when there full of paint or bondo, , tends to make them work a little longer, I use the hard grinder on welds too as flap discs don’t last at all on that
I use the orange Walter Ecotrim disks now for this reason. When the edge gets dull just chew some plastic off the edge with something sharp (scrap steel in a vise works great) then back in business. 😎
Emergency situation lmao, you mean like slamming that grinder around without a shield or sleeves on
First things first, that guard has gotta go... I remove the guard immediately on every new grinder i get, and throw it directly in the trash. Second, once the flap disk wears out that much, it goes directly in the trash and i replace it with a new one. The time saved with a fresh disk more than makes up for the added cost of using a few extra disks. If you don't have a new disk, then you didn't plan properly. I have stacks and stacks of grinding disks, cutting disks, flap disks, etc. Thirdly, I always wear safety glasses and a grinding shield for safety. I remove the guard because it's always getting in the way of whatever im trying to grind. Coping beams is a real pain in the ass with a guard in place. This is not a recommendation either, it's simply how i do things. Lastly, wire wheels and cup brushes are by far the most dangerous attachments you can use on a grinder. They will wreck your world if you aren't paying attention or don't have the experience to use them safely.
Nice tip. You forgot to remove that metal thing that circles halfway around the disc, though. I think that's part of the packing material. Throw it away. It just gets in the way.
I ditched flap disc's 5 years ago and now use 3M cubitron 982 C they cut fast and really last a long time i have a bucket full of every brand out there in flap disc and they suck!! I have tried to get away from 3M because of cost but they are the BEST BY FAR !!Always come back
Thanks. Love that HTP 221 behind you
I have one... That machine is really smooth and worth every penny!

the "Walter" brand discs with the orange plastic backing were made for a technique like this, especially to get more "hangover" for inside radius blends etc
Take the guard off and grind like a real man.
That intro absolutely cracked me up! That was great! I watched it over and over again and I still laugh!
Used to do this all the time when the company I was working for were to cheap buy new ones
I have been doing this on my bench grinder for years now. Turn both of them on and give it a bump or two. It will also clean up your grinder without that spur wheel thing.
Simply running the angle grinder against the stone on a guys bench grinder while it too is running acheives the same result, much easier & faster, and it helps true up ur bench grinder stone too!
Using a grinder like a true 'employee' right their 😂
Ok sir I’ll keep that in mind, thank ya kindly!
Look I get the peace of mind a grinder guard can give somepeople sometimes. But I couldn't imagine trying to use a flap disc with a guard on.
Why not? I don't really find it gets in the way. If I was really stuck I'd remove it temporarily. It's like with gloves, I know people who think not wearing gloves when cutting trees etc. makes them tough but I only *don't* wear gloves when I'm working with rough wood/metal if I absolutely need the dexterity. I'm playing the long game. Lots of these tools can cause serious injury so why not reduce the risk, even if only slightly. Over time this adds up.
At work we split the guard down so it's still there, but lets you reach more
