It's always a mix between personal responsibility and society. The more something bad is normalized in society, the less likely it is that people do something about it. Alcohol is a problem in my country, but people are not likely to do something against it because it's deep in the culture and not drinking it has the potential to exclude you from certain social circles. Huge companies sponsor sports clubs, so alcohol is very important for society on a macro level. It employs many people. The individual who abstains goes against these societal expectations and fighta with his own cravings at the same time. I would argue it is much easier to fight cravings if you live in a society that doesn't normalize the behavior that you want to change

This advice is really helpful for someone who doesn’t really struggle with distraction or temptation while working. You mentioned you are one of those people. But a large portion of people today heavily struggle with distraction and some have actual disorders that make it that much harder. I don’t feel like you are the target audience of these “dopamine detox” videos because you explicitly stated said you feel zero temptation while working. That immediately negates the whole narrative that drives a lot of these other videos. Appreciate the video, but this honestly seems very much catered to people who already have a good sense of will power and self control, which is not the demographic that this “detox” movement is really about.

The worst part about Instagram now is that it’s perfectly curated for what we wanna see. 5 years ago I didn’t care much to go on IG too often when it’d mainly just be influencers and celebs posting on there. Now I’m affected to my FYP page cause it’s full of great analog synthesizer content 😂

I’ve been trying to make my phone distraction free for the last couple of months and I am still learning things that my phone can do to be less distracting. I’m deleting apps that are an infinite scroll, and apps I don’t use anymore. I’ve managed to get my screen time to a couple of hours but it could still be better. My screen time is down 36% from last week hopefully it’ll continue to go down. Very informative video. Keep up the good work. 😊

Thank youuuuuuuu! Finally someone agrees with me! You really go towards what I think about it. Your video is so refreshing. I’m tired of people always barfing on technology . I love my phone too. You can do anything you want with it but people prefer the old classic, their playing games. Once I was writing something and this older person commented: She is playing games. As if they know what the other person is doing. I mean, if people would let go of prejudice, the world would be a better place. I mean, people can really sound like broken records. Facebook, I’m not always there. Instagram, the same thing and TikTok, I haven’t gone there for a while

Loved this fresh new perspective. I'm happy that you're not easily distracted and you don't procrastinate. Your self control is insane. I hope to achieve this kind of self control. What I'm currently doing is trying to be mindful. For example, when i pick my phone, i try to be aware that I'm doing that and then i ask myself if i want to and if it will make me happy in the long run then i choose either to leave it or use it, depending on what i deduce. Before i just used to do things mindlessly. My self control is not as great as yours but I'm building it one step at a time. Thanks for the video ❤

about timestamp 4:50 there are people who dont want to solve the root problem, because some are making a lot of money in the "maintenance bills".
some even go as far as to silence people with the cure. i've been a victim before, so tread lightly since you are on a platform.

the temporary is often more profitable than the permanent.
      examples of temporary:
      1. renting
      2. subscription
      3. gas cars (instead of EV)
      4. hope (unsolved mysteries, urban legends, religions)
      5. political candidates (instead of A.I)
      6. loans (instead of philanthropic grants)
      7. recurring threats (wars, crisis, conflicts, fake news)

Social media in the beginning was fun The apps were simple there weren't ads every two or three posts most the stuff you see wasn't sponsored and you'd actually see your friend's post now it's just a ad revenue machine made to keep your attention as long as possible with a bunch of dumb videos, and they learn you scary well just by simple hearts and comments, RUclips is the last thing I use anymore but it's mostly for informational videos or to try to fix my car or something 😂😂

You've put effort into the video, but I think there is a generalization from your own experience to many who are frankly more susceptible to phone/youtube/internet addiction.
For some people, a glass of alcohol will send them off into a binge. These people literally cannot have alcohol in the house. For others, they can casually have a glass no problem, and maybe the more they have, the more they realize it's time to stop, and then they stop.
If the phone is the equivalent of a glass of alcohol to an alcoholic, this video is not particularly helpful to you IMO.
If you can sit with the phone on the table and it is not a distraction while you work, then I am the wrong target audience for this video. Yes, phones are great, for all the reasons you outline.
I also have an engineering background. If we relate it to weight loss, which I have controlled homeostatically (i.e. fluctuation from 21-25% bodyfat), I have found that the only way I can lose the bodyfat is to consciously calorie restrict. That's either by actual tracking of calories or doing it by proxy, with basically a "meal" plan, and by meal I mean protein powders, frozen berries, vitamins and minerals, protein bars, a few things in limited quantity for fiber and essential fats. And a few high volume low calorie snacks.
This has been sustainable for 2-4 years now (depending on whether 25 or 27% is the upper limit). I can look back and count 7 individual times in 4 years where I have shed 2%+ in a stint of dieting.
This method is the only way I have found that is in any way sustainable for me. If you can do it via another method, good for you. Yes, I know about "Maingaining", and tbh I kind of do that when I'm not dieting, but I still slowly gain weight from my interpretation of that approach.
Perhaps the solution to the phone is in a similar approach, of some sort of cold turkey approach from time to time, with conscious "maingaining" in between.

Thank you. I see so many comments saying this video is great advice. And I’m like “this isn’t even remotely touching the surface of the problem for anyone other than neurotypical people.” This is literally just a “Oh you’re struggling to stay focused? Well stop that!” packaged as something elaborate and countercultural. Completely undermines a massive population of people that don’t just “work for hours with zero temptation.”

You know well I can appreciate what you’re trying to do here, your approach is getting very close to victim blaming. There are billion dollar companies spending millions of dollars at a minimum, every year attempting to capture our attention with subversive algorithms. To compare phone addiction to over eating is ridiculous on the face of it. Yes, we can examine our relationship with food, but sometimes you simply need to eat less food.
Likewise, sometimes the answer is simply getting a dumb phone or taking yourself on a detox from these addictive apps.

Grammar Jihadi here. You failed to use the subjunctive case.
The correct phrasing of this headline should be, "What if your phone WERE not a distraction?"
"The subjunctive mood is for expressing wishes, proposals, suggestions, or imagined situations."
Get it right the next time or you're going to be sporting a very expressive vest!
