@peterbiltknifeguy from my understanding the cks and the factory made knives have a huge difference in quality as far as fit and finish. There are some ckv promo videos around and you can see the craftsmanship, like buddy cutting the elk antler at the saw. Quality labor costs money so a $60 surcharge to have them handle it alone makes sense. The part I don't get is how this is starting 180$ and a 119 is like 80$, they're the same size etc. Just different shape. That seems like a bit of a rip

A true custom made knife with better steel and materials would cost the same if not less. Also it’s strange they still sell 420hc for such a high price when their s35vn lineup, which is quite decent for the money given the steel improvement and and micarta, is way cheaper than this “custom” crap. Who the hell is handling business at that company.

I was told on the phone from Buck, the knives in the custum shop are built by One person, whereas the regular models are assembled by machine, and assembly line of several people.

The last variant they made right was the unobtainable 640XL.
Compare these to the 50+ year old originals with stainless pommel and guard, 6 13/16 to 7" hand ground 440c blades, a very natural feeling grip with lively balance, that really cool bulge towards the tip, which shipped with cards explaining that lower carbon higher chrome steels like 420hc weren't used because they aren't durable enough. Those antiques are the centerpieces of most buck collections that have them.
These new ones are a shortened gas station steel overpriced bad joke contrary to the intentions of the originals. The ratings on their site reflect that.

I actually emailed Buck after seeing your video and going to their website to confirm this I was pretty irritated by it. I got a response very quickly actually within 8 hours of my email and they said they are planning to offer more blade steels in the very near future but she couldn’t say exactly when. And the custom shop knives cost more because they’re assembled by one person start to finish not machine assembled so basically I assume one person puts together a knife using premade parts? I would like to think he’s picking the best parts and hand fitting them and that the custom shop knives are little tighter and nicer but for the price I’d grab a $184 machine one over the $250 hand fit one every time and I’m not frugal.
I would actually order one of these with the elk horn handle if they offered magnacut or any other better steel. What do you buck fans think of the 420hc? Is it outdated?

I haven’t bought anything other than bench, ade for a decade and 1 spyderco. If they made this 124 in magnacut I would buy one. Only reason I’ve stayed away from buck is it seems like a cheap budget knife company but with good American heritage so I respect that. I hope they do better in the future with some higher quality materials whatever the price.

Yeah dude I feel like if they can't figure out how to make these special orders (I won't call it custom lol) work on their production line without adding completely absurd price increases, they shouldn't do it.
Maybe they could just offer a few different colorways and/or steel versions, like most knife makers do these days. Just keep it simple but give people a few other options. Most other companies seem to figure this out.

Yeah they could just offer different handle hardware options without much increase in cost quite easily i think. I guess since they have the custom shop pretty much everything that goes there is expensive, but only way i would understand why the brass option for example would be that expensive is true custom order that some employee would have to ground the guard, and pommel by hand, but they likely have piles upon piles of the brass hardware just laying ready to go in the custom shop

Okay, it is hand assembled. Just look up say how the Buck 119 is made. Yes the blade is machine made, as are all the parts. But a PERSON fits every thing together to make sure it comes out right. Yes, a brass guard and "Pommel" and brass pins through the handle scales would be nice. But yeah, its not worth it. Yes I have a 124, and I'm very found of it. Even though I have to do some work on the handle, to round off some corners. I just hope I do not run it. Any ways, ah, yeah. Buck your not using your brain. Look at the videos for the bk9 and esee junglas both in 1095 and compare how they faired against the vaunted TRC Apocalypse in super duper Elmax steel. 1095 proved vastly superior. Why? Because lower carbide volume = higher toughness which means greater fracture resistance-- period.

Hollow grind might be easy to make or something since lot of cheapo knives have hollow grinds, but its easily the weakest grind there is, and if it gets damaged usually the damage is worse, and more difficult to repair since its so thin behind the edge.
