    I agree about the destructive tests conducted on knifes not designed for the task. A number of times I have watched knife videos and asked myself "Yeah, but what did think was going to happen?".

    • @lynnjr457
      @lynnjr457 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@Chris-eo9kh I agree. While I never expected to use a knife in a way that it was not intended for, life has taught me to that when my knife is the only tool with me, it will get used in MANY different ways other than it was intended. Why wouldn't I want to know how much abuse a knife can take? Besides, if we only watched one type of review we only get one side of the story. Heck, the number of "long term reviews" I watch where the blade has obviously never seen a stone are worthless to me. Re-stropping a factory edge doesn't give me any real value as it tells me that you don't USE your knives like I do. That doesn't make them useless to others. So, as far as I am concerned, make as many different types of videos as you guys want. I will take all the different viewpoints and add my own experiences in before I make a purchase.

    As a certified ZAT (Zombie Apocalypse Training) instructor, when students often ask for a knife recommendation, I refer them to 411 Outdoors. These showcase videos help with a cost/benefit analysis. It appears that the Buck 124 inspired Warivo does everything that the Buck does at a quarter of the price. Of course, it lacks the cachet of a Buck - but then, I seriously doubt that a Zombie is going to know the difference. You can drop $200 on the 124, or take the same $200 and buy the Warivo, a bow, arrows, and a slingshot.

    A skinning knife, maybe if your skinning a Buffalo, or Elk. As a former hunter I prefer a blade like the Kalinga, with a nice curved blade. The 124 does make a good butcher knife for when you've gutted and skinned the critter. Now you need a big knife to break down the carcass. That is the 124's best job. Plus camp chores. I would never buy a knock off. I like the real 124. Which is why I saved my pennies and bought one last May. Stay sharp.

      Thats for a reason. The Nemo IS the Buck 124. As a diving knife the Nemo reviewed poorly, but the outdoorsy type actually were extremely fond if it. Eventually the Nemo was rebranded as the 124 frontiersman to fill that demand.

    The Buck 124 here in Canada, if I'm not mistaken, it sells for around three hundred dollars or more. In most places the Buck 119 sells for about one hundred and twenty dollars.
    I'm really liking that Warivo Knock-Off. Looks pretty solid. That is a knife I would buy to use. If it's available here it would probably sell for upwards of one hundred dollars. By the time we pay our thirteen percent Tax added to the cost of the knife. It is very similar in appearance to the 124. And I imagine the weight is close to the Buck as well. Always nice seeing budget friendly Bowie Knives.
    Also I'm interested in seeing some of those big Warivo knives you mentioned as well. It's another Brand I am not familiar with. Thanks for showing us this little beauty.

    I'm not a fan of that style of knife, so I can't really speak to the comparison. I had lived fifty years without getting around to hunting, so I didn't have a skinning knife. I was about to start preparing to hunt when my health failed. I doubt that I'll ever need a skinning knife. When I think of getting a big knife to carry, I think in terms of the bushcraft knives or a kukri. Ultimately, I'm not in a position to make good use of any of those either, but I just like them better.

    That buck tang is steel surrounded by aluminum hence why you can see the difference. The Warivo probably uses the same steel from the knife to make the pommel caps for the handle. As its seem isn't visable. Maybe its welded. Could be glued who knows.

    I really appreciate that you do these videos on some of the 'alternative' knife brands that might not be as well known. There are various, such brands all over Amazon and you help determine whether some of these more budget friendly knives are good or if they aren't even worth the relatively low price.
    To me knives like this are not 'knock offs'. Instead, they take a fairly common design that is made by other companies, including Buck - and maybe the specific style is most identifiable with Buck - and put their own spin on them. For instance, just because Ford might produce a compact, hatchback car doesn't mean they are ripping off Honda, etc. They are simply producing their, own version of a product that has a certain popularity in the market.
    I am sure the Buck is, overall, likely of better quality than the Warivo. At the same time is the Buck really four times the quality at four times the price? Also, how many of us common knife users are ever going to really wring that extra quality out of such a knife? I am a big fan of knives, in general, especially various types of fixed blades, but at the end of the day it is a slab of sharp steel with a handle. Buck has a standard 'formula' for this class of knife and has been producing them for years. It isn't like they require R&D, new machinery, etc. for these long time designs. The only thing, IMO, that 'justifies' a $180 price tag is the 'Buck' stamp on it. $100? Sure. $120? Okay - but $180? Naw. Not even if I had a boatload of money. Buck can put whatever price they want on their product and if it sells at that price then more power to them. The flip side is it creates a market for similar knives at a fraction of the cost and that goes for any knife company.
    Heck, one of these days I want to splurge and order a 110 from the Buck custom shop with stag handles, nickel bolsters and possibly a different blade steel. It will probably cost around/over $200 but it will be my, specific knife and the materials will justify it. Close to $200 for a standard production knife? Nah.

  • @DavienMcCarty
    @DavienMcCarty 22 дня назад

    I generally dont throw a ton of money at any one knife, but the 124 was one of the exceptions. When I go camping, hiking or even just out on an adventure, the 124 is the only knife I trust with my life. You dont always want to carry an axe, or a variety of tools if you are just going out for a little while but having a knife that can do just about anything and be confident that it can handle the task is a surprising comfort. It saves on weight, and after all, a knife is a tool and a tool deserves to be used. The 124 is well worth the money as it will always be there, reliable, when you need or want it to be. Buck knives are indeed quite pretty, but they look even better when they are used and broken in. I would not be confident in putting a clone through the same level of use that I put the 124 through. I dont really consider the 124 to be a "specialized" knife, but rather the kind of knife that is not great any one thing but good at everything, and it has the durability to match that ideal.

    That pommel & tang may be 1 piece. Notice how thin the pommel on the Warivo is. Could indicated a 1 piece machined construction. However even if its not a true full tang it still has plenty to do the job. Besides I mostly use hidden tangs anyway. Though i tend to make my own so i know what they can handle. No pun intended...(well maybe a little lol).

    I actually carry a few different types of blades for versatility - different uses. I haven't practiced throwing in a long time but I have given some thought to trimming one of my Outlaws down and give it a try. I have seen a video of a guy who was pretty good with the Timber Rattler.
    Above all I like the chopping capabilities of the Rattlers and the classic design.

    Interesting review. I am attracted to so many knives for so many reasons, the steel, exotic wood, blade design, price, etc. However, the biggest reason for a specific knife is the specific purpose. No knife can do everything well. So, before I buy another knife, I ask myself what I will use it to do. As for the torture tests, I have no problem with them, but it is true that the given purpose of a knife will likely determine the results of these tests, blade steel and a few other factors aside.

    I got a 124 my friend had when he passed away. I thought it would be a good trail knife. I did some light duty trail trimming and the pins kept coming loose in the scales and the scales were always loose. then after some light trimming the blade edge bent about 2/3 of the way back the wave in the edge was almost an inch long and maybe a 1/16 inch out of line. I sent it back to buck and they repaired it. It appeared to be the same parts just straightened. I let it go. I would rather have a blade chip for abuse instead of bend. I just sharpened a couple Buck knives for a friend yesterday. I don't like the feel of the steel they use when I sharpen them. It is hard to get an edge on and hard to get rid of the feather edge to finish. They may be tough but are not hard enough to satisfy me.

    There's some really decent knock off knives out there. Even some really decent Chinese knives like Eafengrow. I didn't buy my Buck knives to save money. I bought them because they will someday be a piece of American history. If I were buying a knife to beat on? The knock offs and Chinese one's do just fine. To each their own.

    Good honest review, Thanks. I dont have it yet but you know I will. I think Buck Knives better take notice. Just like the Gordon Bowie from harbor freight is more affordable than the 119 with equal quality. This is another example of if an American company wants my buisness than price reasonably. The economy is too bad to be pricing so high. Not when there are solid alternatives. If you make it down too some of the North Georgia spring festivals there are some really good blade smiths that will be setting up there wares. Shoot me a message if you want and I'll show you around. Thanks for the review!

      When you consider that American workers want $50 a hour and a 30 hour work week but still paid for 40 plus hours union's pushing for paid vacation/sick time/ paid maternity leave for both parents (even tho Men can't get pregnant)
      Business here pays a higher tax to do business here (hence why so many jobs are now offshore)
      You end up with a $200 knife that realistically should cost slightly under $100. 😐 You end up with higher cost passed on.... No business is going to eat all that expense.
      And I promise that the Gordon (buck knockoff) is not built to the same quality and you can tell by the handle (that I'm guessing) is not a full width full tang but probably "rat tail" style tang

    Clones and similar appearing copies are taking over the budget market on much more than just knives and multi tools . Hollywood can’t make great original movies and pump out sequels or continue multi-part episodes of successful past shows. Cars or SUV’s all look the same. Finally, you cannot travel across America and find uniqueness in food or culture anymore the same chain restaurants, hotels and coffee houses dot the landscape. Innovation is dead, even RUclips reviews are similar, not much seems fresh and unique although Daniel does a good job.

    I love Buck…. but, it needs to be said that the 124 Frontiersman is junk. It’s hollow ground and made from a soft steel. Even with bucks perfect heat treat it has a tendency to roll the edge, chip, dull very fast. I went through three of them trying to give them a chance and they get tore up on basic camp tasks that do not include batoning.

    buck knives sucks. their fixed blades are good quality the buck 110 is a classic but they suck. 100 years of making knives and i like maybe three of them total. i like tom mayo as a knife designer, that was a good choice but they just turn out junk. even if they started turning out a good product somehow i wouldn’t like them because i’ve applied there a half dozen times realizing that the don’t pay as much as mcdonald’s would but i only lived a half a mile from them and i consider myself to be a wealth of knowledge when it comes to knives and i would enjoy the experience of working for them and they were pretty rude about not hiring me to the point where it’s difficult to not be rude in return. the only good knives they made were ones that were designed a hundred years ago and passed down to them and in this day and age there is nothing special about those knives anymore so i’m glad someone else is making a more affordable option.

      I started collecting the Buck 100 series sheath knives back in the 80's and I still have them. Put them through a lot of hard use, and they never once failed me. Of course back then, one did not chop and split wood with a knife. In in 2022-23 I finished the collection, with the Buck 124 being the final one. I Like Buck knives. They have always done what I needed a knife to do. Sounds like your just mad at the company because they will not hire you.

    • @cameronchicken8439
      @cameronchicken8439 5 месяцев назад

      @@longrider42 you’re not wrong and there’s no accounting for taste which is fully subjective but along with that i am welcome to my own preference and opinions. the buck 100 series (the whole series) was created before this generation of knives and the designs have been handed down to them and there’s not a single original design since the 1980’s that i personally would own because i think they are total garbage. like for instance look at any of their liner lock knives and you will see what i mean, it’s a basic design which is difficult to mess up and not a single one of them has a good detente to the point that they have a limp deployment…. in this day and age they don’t stand up and the only good designs that function properly are their older designs which are pricey but also are not unique. when you look at the knockoff in the video made in china it is an improvement over the original design which they have been making for a hundred years and one quarter of the price so i stand by what i said, buck knives suck. what they did right in the past is they chose the softest blade steel (420) and the put it on this thinnest geometry and people raved about their heat treatment but really that doesn’t have anything to do with it and their heat treatment isn’t great anymore and none of their modern designs use their older conventional knowledge which was and still is a bit ahead of its time. it’s like they were great until they weren’t and i feel like they’ve lost their way a long time ago. their only popular modern designs were designed by tom mayo and they have a lot of good going on but they aren’t even capable of making a quality version. and then their only ditch effort is to try to make military knives because they are all “made in america” but they aren’t good designs. people like their classic designs like the 110 because it’s a great skinning knife for hunters, soft steel thin geometry full handle which is great for skinning but there are still better options and cheaper options so there really is nothing special about them. northern idaho is beautiful though and i think anyone from california should move there asap (only jk the racists will kill you and the police will run you out of town). if there’s one takeaway from the original buck knives i would like to see more of is their hollow grinds, not many companies do hollow grinds because of the machining costs which is why they used softer steel which actually works better on a thin geometry and the rest of the world has yet to catch up. case knives also uses 420 and they run it softer and it’s on a thinner geometry and there’s more production value behind their designs like the stockman but they don’t really do fixed blades…. and i am mad that they wouldn’t hire me, i’m a hard worker i’m intelligent and i would do it for fun and bring experience with me and they were very rude which definitely helped me come to my final conclusion that they suck. and their newer logo with the anvil looks absolutely terrible

    I just got this knife today after watching this video a while back. This knife doesn’t even compare to a Buck knife. 🔪 The one I have is bent,edge is completely destroyed.the spine was ground with an angle grinder,it has gaps everywhere,the clip point is so small it’s barely visible. It was a stamped piece of steel that was ground into what looks like a knife. Do I feel like I got ripped off? Not really because I didn’t make it or market it. However it looks nothing like the pictures. This is why I stress buying American 🇺🇸 products. I have a Buck 119 special and it is light years ahead in quality. I stabbed through a steel door with it and it did no damage to the blade. The edge is so sharp it’s dangerous. I have an $85 cold steel code 4 tanto and it’s the same quality as the Buck. #coldsteelknives Code 4 Cold Steel folder
