  • It was the plastic bearings/spacers in the side case that wore. Honda tech said they are a wear item. I don't know how you know until this happens. Anyways replaced the two plastic type bearing spacers on two different shafts and works fine. The rust is from getting snow in the gear case. I would drive it through deep old snow to clear around the house and shift back and forth when stuck. The final output shaft doesn't have a seal on it so built up snow would melt and get inside. I had to replace some bearings inside because of that.

Given that I know the final drive gear can be normally slid off in that direction you can take two paths ,, press out the hardened steel Pin and slide it off the other end ,, or machine off the offending interference material ,, I would be careful to check on rather the shaft was tapered over size on that end for a reason on that machine design,, Was it heated and driven out of a bearing in that region ? one can see another example on the same mechanism in this case with a sheared of pin ,, Snwoblower Quick Tip #2 Honda Drive Shaft Pin he has no trouble sliding it off in his case as an example.. (yes its his error in the spelling)

did you ever get this fixed? I am attempting similar repair. youre lucky pin did not break. i was told to change anything plastic , gasket , outer dust cover on axle. that is where i think water gets in and ruins the grease.

anthony vanucci . On the shafts there are plastic cups that have flanges that act as spacers. One was completely ground away the other was a sliver of itself that let the parts move side to side from the outer case cover/frame. I also replaced the bearings but I did reuse the gear shown after realizing that with new parts it fit without play. I did use their crappy plastic parts. Just careful now when clearing deeper snow as to not let it get up to the drive shaft when reversing. I didn’t see any seal on shaft from the parts list hence the problem with water getting in.

Thank you. I have taken 3 of these apart and they were all water contaminated and the grease was all caked up. Check out snowblowerforum.com for complete writeups on this honda service. Some members install zerks so they can grease without taking it apart after initial service. I guess you should be good to go for some time now. Thanks.
