The point was to see if it was worth it. Many cars come with 2wd and 4wd as a cost extra. This was to show the benefit of 4wd. But then you knew that, right?
+RecombuCars I'm sorry, but I just found the whole thing a bit thin - there was no discussion about at what point the 2wd gave up and 4wd was advisable, and no discussion on price differences, so in actual fact it did answer the question it set out in the title - felt like an advert.

If the video was simply - 'let's have a quick look at how much better 4wd can be' - it would have felt more honest - hey ho - keep the videos coming 👍
+James Hibbert to be fair, there are lots of off road circuits where 2wd copes just as well as 4wd. In fact, a 2wd car can beat a 4wd car in certain conditions with the right tyres. But yeah... Quick test to show you what difference it makes in these circumstances.

A fairly easy test for AWD. The thing most people don't mention when talking about AWD is some of the fastest cars in the world have AWD (Veyron, 918, Huracan etc), and that ain't because they're designed to go in the snow. AWD simply gives more control and better handling. AWD is just better even in the dry.
Of course, if you want to have fun and do powerslides then it's different. But I'd go so far as to say AWD is an overlooked safety issue as far as every day driving is concerned. It could make a difference in some instances.
lapamful I have the t31 xtrail and it sticks to the road. I tried getting it loose in a paddock and it wouldn’t really let go. I don’t know if I would ever buy a 2 wheel drive vehicle again. I drive in 2 wheel around town or on straight roads motorways etc and switch it over to AWD in the wet or on the windy stuff.
So wouldnt a formula 1 car have 4wd if it was better?

AWD is banned in F1, even though it is demonstrably safer. Some people say it’s not needed anyway, and it just adds weight but that’s all nonsense. I think it adds to the jeopardy and that’s why F1 keeps it. No sensible car maker would build a road car delivering the amount of power F1 cars make and not build them AWD. They’d be death traps.

F1 is going the way of the dinosaur anyway. It no longer represents the cutting edge of automobile technology. The average F1 car has a 0-100 of about 2.5secs. There are several electric and hybrid cars (all AWD) that will spank an F1... AND be safer doing it.
@@kelechinobi3085 yeah there are many cars that make 0-60 faster than an f1. And one would wonder if it is because 0-60 is 0.0001% of the race. Awd adds weight. You need a shaft that would pass the drivers ass or make the car higher. More drive train needs more energy, less hp on ground. Like there could be a reason that Porsche gt3 is RWD, Porsche would know since turbo s is awd with more power but slower on track. I dont know if you just pass your own opinion off as truth or what base you have for your statement.

Should have had a rear wheel 2wd test. Look how he was able to reverse the front wheel drive car, but not drive it forward

"better"? Yes: if you are stuck somewhere you should not be in the first place. If you regularly go dig your wheels in deep mud for some reason go buy a real AWD or a military vehicle.
Only case it actually is useful for 99.99% of people: powerful sports cars.
If you had Cooper at3s like I do on my 2014 Honda Odyssey then front wheel drive can get through mud or bf ko2s could work also.

4x4 lock on xtrails cuts out at 40kph and reverts back to AWD mode by itself. So that 50mph is bs. Same system as in the t31. I have a t31 and took it down a paddock and 40kph is a lot faster than you’d think off road.
I had a 4 wheel drive T31 x-trail and when it snowed last March I could have driven it but every business and shop was closed so I had nowhere to go. I traded it in against a qashqai 2 wheel drive, saving money on road tax and fuel.
Some people not only want a 4wd vehicle to get to work or wherever they have to go, but also for fun and offroad adventures

Well done, I like the comparison as most of us are not likely to go more offroad than that. I would be interested to see how Mitsubishi Outlander phev would cope in the same conditions.

when you have 4 wheels and only 2 are driving it is not driving. it is either pulling or pushing. having 4 wheels and 2wd is not at all a car for me. people say that don't venture out to have a 4wd. once in a blue moon situations demand you don't get stuck with your loved ones and a 4wd drive is better. 4 wd is a must for 4 wheels period.

I'll remember that awd is better next time I drive somewhere, where I shouldn't be driving. Please respect road and don't destroy them by driving on them when they are in this condition. Same with mountain biking or hiking. It's called trail respect.

Pointless test. The weight distribution of an AWD is different to a standard fwd.
Should of compared an AWD with a separate fwd car.

Knowing that 2wd and 4wd cars are built differently, it makes this test pretty pointless doing it in the same car.
Better to have used two vehicles of the same model and age etc. Having one 4wd version and one 2wd version...then do the test!?
So many folks never go off the road and drive through muddy fields and if they were going to, they would obviously buy a 4wd!?!

4wd doesn’t make that much of a difference. In mud or snow, 2wd vs 4wd is potentially just 2 wheels spinning and slipping vs 4 wheels spinning and slipping.
4WD means 2x more grip than 2WD
In acceleration, which one is faster 2wd or 4wd

I've ferried key healthworker staff around when our county has been snow-bound, all in a VW Passat TDI 4Motion. The 4WD makes a HUGE difference in snowy conditions - video is from an uncleared road, after various people had said it was unpassable because it's so steep:

I also have a scabby old Golf Syncro which it's great fun to use to lean on people at wet track days, because the 4WD makes it hang on SO much better. Like this:

2 Wheel drives are not better than conventional front wheel drives. just posturing only.
Let's see... 2WD, Check.
Traction control off so you can spin your wheels to fling mud off the tires... nope.
Manual transmission so you can pop the clutch and fling mud off the tires... nope.
Maybe have someone who knows how to 4WD do the test before you set up the test? Obviously 4WD will be better, but this was at best incompetent driving, at worst deliberately misleading.
Traction control is turned off when the car is in 2wd mode - 2:08 on the video
And they dont look like a/t treds! Anyone else notice this
