Under rated and under represented in the scene is the D22 Navara. The V6, VG motors go forever, have power to spare, are super easy to work on AND are cheap to buy and maintain. During Covid I panicked and sold my good cars and picked up a 1 owner V6 Dualcab D22. I've fitted a Flexiglass canopy, drawers, fridge a 12v setup and an awning and it hasn't let me down. The second lockdowns were off and I was confident I still had a job, the family and I have taken it on about 20 camping trips, towed a van, beached it at least once a month, done around 60,000km and it hasn't let me down.
I honestly think ANY dualcab ute would have given me the same experiences. Like Jocko's pony, there is something to be said about old, unwanted and retired work utes.

Most underrated 4wd, I have to say an MQ triton. I recently purchased one of these as my first project ute so I could get out and explore my backyard we call Australia. Although barebones stock I take her out on weekend trips, and she is constantly surprising me with how well she handles everything I throw at her. Me and my partner came to Australia traveling all the way from Perth, through the south, up to Cape York and got ourselves a Nissan Navara d22 2.5l TD. Such a good reliable car, brought us anywhere off-road with a 2inch suspension lift and it's got lots of space for all your camping gear. It has a second battery setup under the bonnet that keeps the fridge running and wastes no space in the back. Fuel consumption is a dream, 9-10 litres for 100 km, perfect if you do a lot of touring. Safes heaps of money you can spend on nice cold one's instead. And you can pick them up quite cheap from 12k onwards. Probably go for the 3l instead of the 2.5 for that extra bit of HP and NM but apart from that, such a great car. Would recommend it straight away.

One of the best 4wds I have owned is an 08 RC Colorado.
The 4JJ1 engine was reliable and powerful as the RCs were built fairly light.
The only work I did on it was clean the EGR valve once, installed HD rear leaf springs and wound up the front torsion bars for extra height.
Used for multiple 4wd trips and firewood collection out in the bush.
The amount of tracks you found yourself on with a canopy and trailer filled with wood, track slippery from rain and the steepest rutted climb ahead of you...
Low range, 1st gear and it would crawl up anything I pointed it at.
Also used it to tow up the coast from Vic to Qld multiple times with a 24ft caravan.
The thing never stopped, never complained and was just a great little ute, 4wd and family car.

Definitely a D22 Navara, the YD25 of course. They get hammered on by the 4x4ing community, and yet I've seen them out-perform a whole heap of rigs, especially in the sand.
They are a light little car, with plenty of mods, sometimes using the same, odd parts with GU's and occasionally even GQ's.
Decent power out of the engine, and with a tune can see 150hp and 330nm of torque easily, I'm sure a few mods can take that a fair bit further.

Bulletproof engine, reasonable fuel economy even for a petrol, seats five, comfortable and I dont have to worry about fuel system failure cost. As it is I came across a stock very clean example of a 90. Centre difflock, just been over the pits. and been looked after all its life by a decent sort of a fellow. I have since chucked a few dollars at it and sourcing from market place and doing all the work myself, I have put a bullbar, cargo barrier, spotties and a roof rack on as well as getting 4 high quality recovery tracks for all for less than 10k. it has taken me everywhere i have wanted to go on stock size A/T tyres and suspension and even kept up with my mates patrrol on the 33s.

With regards to the petrol NL - I also have one but I get better mileage than 17L per 100K. Also, they were the last model built on the traditional ladder chassis, which was why I chose to buy an NL rather than the newer Gen 3 shape. Additionally, in early 2020 Mitsubishi issued a very bizarre "voluntary recall" because the Takata inflators had been found to be very dangerous. The weird thing was that Mitsubishi Australia sent a letter to all registered NL owners advising them to stop driving their NLs immediately. They stated they would not be replacing the airbags but offered to buy back the cars at market value (which was pretty low as the pandemic had not yet been declared). The deal was that you had to take your car to the dealership and once they gave you a quote, you weren't allowed to reject the offer unless you signed a death waiver absolving Mitsubishi of any responsibility if you die from the inflator. Anyway after a few months they ended up manufacturing the suitable inflators and I got one put in by the dealership for free. But as a result, a lot of NLs got crushed so they are extremely rare these days!

Gotta say that the Holden Jackaroo go's very hard for the price very underrated and reliable as hell I've never had a problem with the one I've owned for over three years. the 3.5 litre Isuzu engines are bullet proof with coils at the back makes it feel like a hoverboard going through beaches and tracks and the limited slip diff makes it pretty capable. for a good 4x4 wagon don't reckon u could go wrong with the old roos since u can pick them up for around 5000 that makes them a bargain.

    • @ianweal3081
      @ianweal3081 Год назад +2

Had three Roos, 3.2l petrol, 3l diesel, 3.5l petrol.
Even though the 3l 4JX1 diesel was a complicated common rail high pressure oil injection system (Catapillar design) it was a very powerful donk in its time, brilliant torque at very low RPM.
I would not buy that motor now though as parts very different to obtain now, and there was little knowledge of this motor in the outside world, most issues with this motor where caused by mechanics not understanding the injection system, incorrect motor oil (diesel oil) had them misfire etc, unknowing mechanics delved into injector issues, when all they needed to do was drain and install very thin high grade synthetic oil, Holden charged a monstrous amount for the oil at service intervals.
The Roos comfort, touring cruise was phenomenal, who'd believe something so comfy on road was a true off road capable truck.
The LSD in the rear I'd rate as good as the recognised Patrol LSD, infact, in the early 3.2l V6 we had to run a Holden additive to stop the clutch packs winding up on road. Christ that thing wound up and pulled hard, loved passing V8s on long steep inclines, the 3.2 revved so hard.
3.5 had less incline to revv, but delivered better low down torque.
Fact, when I ordered our new 3l diesel I sold my old 3.2l petrol to a disco owner. I took this chap for a test drive, he claimed it to be more comfy than the disco, then I took him off road in it, pointed it at an extremely steep incline, he gasped and said you're not going up there, "yep". At the top he said my disco would never had come up that, I'm more than impressed, I'll take it off your hands.
Our new 3l diesel auto became our touring weapon, it went places that in theory it shouldn't have, fantastic torque and LSD often saw us wheel standing on the rear axle to get to our destination.
The rear coils flexed more than competition of its time and the torsion bar front end just worked, and unlike 100 series cruiser torsion bar front end, the Roos didn't fracture.
Replaced our 3l diesel Roo with a dream 4X4 D4-D V8 76 cruiser thinking it would be an upgrade, so wrong, dream shattered. Had the cruiser for 3 years, learnt to totally detest the thing, absolutely useless offroad even with front and rear lockers compared to the mightly capable Roo, so went back to our 3l diesel Roo.
Then purchased a 3.5 petrol Roo as our pure on road cruiser, just such a comfy ride/drive. Unfortunately wifey had an accident, writing it off as parts to hard to obtain, something to take into account prior to anyone purchasing second hand.
I'd totally recommend a second hand 3.5l V6 as a great truck, but avoid the 4JX1 diesel unless you have a good understanding of its unique injection system.

Totally agree that the 105 with the 1FZ-FE is underrated. We picked ours up for $6200 in 2019 and it has been fantastic. 380,000KM on the clock and it has never let us down. Everyone always talks about diesels but the prices are ridiculous. I think if you are on a budget go for a petrol, it will save you a heap of money upfront and all those saving will go a long way in fuel. You can find every mod under the sun for these things. They tow very well and they are easy to work on.

Most underrated 4wd, Mitsubishi delica. Come with a 2.8turbo diesel or a v6 petrol and they’re an import so there’s not a lot getting around so not too well know but have a strong cult following. They have 2h, 4h, 4L, a column shifter up to 8 seats to fit all the Sheila’s and how many 4wds do you know with crystallite roof (5 sun roofs). Can pick a decent one up for under 10k and will get you anywhere you point it. Cheers!

Huge fan of my old Disco 1, lock diff and low range, it will chug just about anywhere. 1.4 million on the clock and still going... just look after it.
Yes, it has some quirks, odd electrical accessories issues, rattles a little over 90k, and the sunroof leaked till it was permanently sealed shut but really not bad for an old vehicle.

@@robertswoffer6144 With the greatest respect, your type of response is why I tend not to comment on any social media. Instead of saying something like wow, I've never heard of a Disco 1 with that sort of mileage; how has it been achieved? You went for, without knowing me or the vehicle, you are a liar.
The vehicle in question is a 200, I am the third owner. The previous 2 were both mechanics the immediate prior was an older Landrover specialist. When I bought it not only did I get a 2-page guide of various maintenance recommendations beyond the owner's manual the rear was full of the latest various pipes and parts that had been replaced as preventative maintenance. He had done an engine and transmission rebuild.
Is the old girl showroom ready, no but she's well looked after and has proven to be very reliable.

The disco 1 and 2 are really good, on the D2 just change the air suspension on the back and it will go anywhere, owned the D2 and went on track competitions, never left me stranded. For every D2 owner there, if you don't want to upgrade axles, keep the tire size a little down, the car is tall enough as it is, bigger tires cause axle snaps and less power, have a great one guys!
