I did not know Nightmare Before Christmas had a troubled development, I am so glad it came out as well as it did. I watched it so much in my childhood, I think it still has quite a big impact on my own creativity. Seriously, if anyone reading this has not watched it, you absolutely should!
Man, 30 years. Thanks a lot Saber lol... I was 6 when Nightmare Before Christmas came out. And let me tell you, I fell in love with it from first watch. I was always that strange, creepy kid who loved the dark stuff. Even at a young age I was reading Edgar Allen Poe and have been entrenched in the darker aspects of storytelling and settings. I have this movie to thank for a lot of who I am as an adult and what I still love to this day. It deserves all the praise in the world. This knock-off though, I'm... I'm so disgusted by lol. What a travesty!
I feel like you chose this movie to review so you could springboard from it to talking about the production history of Nightmare, and if that's the case, then it was the right move, because the movie itself is roastable but hearing the trivia about Nightmare's troubled production is what caught my interest and I would LOVE to see a deeper-dive vlog on its history. I'm sure others have done it, but I'm saying, if you ever want to do one of your own, I'm sure people would flock to see you recap Nightmare's production with that Saber flavor. But also, that's the KH Halloween Town theme in the background, right? That's interesting to me because it made me think - you said that Disney tried to distance themselves from the movie because it didn't fit their brand. And that makes sense. But these days, people think of it inextricably with Disney, and the Parks and merch brands capitalize on it massively without using the Touchstone go-between. And you know what I think had so much to do with this? Kingdom Hearts. Because that game was a Disney/Final Fantasy crossover with original elements. NOT a Disney/TOUCHSTONE/Final Fantasy crossover with original elements. Anything they brought in was going to be justified by the Disney umbrella, and that held true for when they'd later bring in PIXAR content, solidifying that they consider PIXAR an essential Disney cornerstone. So now I wonder. Was it that Nomura and his dev team, owing to the popularity of Nightmare in Japan, strongarmed Disney into letting them include the world, and the resultant branding paid dividends for Disney? Or was it that Disney strongly suggested they include the world so they could finally put it back in their catalog after seeing the subculture that grew up around it? Either way, it was a move of marketing GENIUS, and I'm pretty sure we owe the return of Nightmare to the official Disney-approved catalog to the fact that it was included in a crossover game for RPG fans 😀
I remember being so blown away that Kingdom Hearts included the world of "Nightmare Before Christmas" that I fumbled and made a lot of mistakes playing "The Little Mermaid" section because I knew according to the game guide that that was going to be the next world to explore😂❤
The Mayor in NBC is my favorite character- he gets 6 minutes of screen time. I'd rather watch that 6-minute clip repeatedly for the length of that ripoff than watch the actual ripoff one time 💀
10:08 Wait, is that right? Cheer, the *CHRISTMAS* elf using good luck powers? Not the *LEPRECHAUN*? Geesh, talk about the writers not even paying attention to their cast of characters.
The way I see it too is the monster "army" only woke up from their nap because they were promised fireworks, then when that didn't happen they got bored and went back to sleep 😂😂😂
I saw TNBC in theaters. My parents thought it was so boring that they fell asleep. But i was so enraptured, my eyes just glued to the screen. Then 20 years of silence later, Hot Topic wouldn't shut up about it, so I'm kinda burnt out on it now. Also now i wanna see the witch from Mob Squad in place of this witch.
when he started talking about jingle and tingle my brain already automatically thought "bingle", but then that's actually what their name is. unreal. how did this even make it to a production stage
I can only imagine what her interaction with a kid would be like.... When Jack was dressed as Santa and the kid interacted with him, you got so much emotion and reaction in less than 30 seconds. The kid went from excited to freaked out and confused. Jack went from shocked to excited. Then when the kid stutters, you see Jack's visible concern thinking the kid is just shy and lights up by giving him a present before imitating Santa's jolly laughter, telling you he's having fun. How the heck does a guy with no eyeballs give off more emotion than a bug eyed witch?? Lol
Hearing you say this film feels A.I. generated makes me remember that there is another RUclipsr, Athena P (popular for "lore" videos on nostalgic 2000's kids shows) watched a WowNow film that ripped off Hop called Hodge. They used chapgpt to see if it could create something more creative, and it did, a first movie, a sequel, and a song. Of course I'm not condoning A.I. writing here, just poking fun at WowNow.
the AI’s not at fault but its users. it’s a technology that can be used in many ethical and helpful, fun ways. It’s people using it to steal art, use deepfakes and other fucked up things I don’t even want to think of. the tool itself doesn’t do that nor was created with that purpuse only. Technology is neutral, intentions of the users are not because we are, well, people. People are bad and new technology possibilities only shows us HOW MUCH. Censoring technology shouldn't be a thing just because people are bad and cant use it.
There is an interesting old animated show that has a furry version of a historical figure who's name I can't say (first name sarts with A and last name with H). It's called Alfred J Kwak. It was an Dutch-, German- and Japanese made show that ran from 1989 to 1991. so it's a perfect show for you to check out😁 Also happy Halloween
Wait. Wouldn't making something like that be illegal in Germany? I know there's very strict laws about portrayal of that part of German history in media.
@LendriMujina I don't know that much about the show's production exept that Germany was propably the least involved with it, but I do know that the episodes were you know who was in, where originally banned from airing in Germany and those episodes where also pretty controversial in Germany for sometime, but I don't know enything else.
Why can’t we say Adolph Hitler? He was a very evil person responsible for 6 million + deaths, but to not even say his name like that says we are still too afraid of him to mention him by name, thus it only serves to give him posthumous power. It also says we are trying to forget that part of our history like it never even happened. My grandfather and grand uncles didn’t risk their lives just to have that chunk of our timeline be unmentioned. It’s disrespectful to them, it’s disrespectful to all who were brutally tortured and killed at Hitler’s request, and it’s disrespectful to the survivors and their families.

Loved NightmareBC cause of the music, art style, and ability to share it with so many generations. Each person/kid would take something away from it that they would have enjoyed. To me though, to say they had strong character development is no where near right lol. I let my 7 yr old daughter watch it for the first time this year and she had so many questions that most obsessors choose to ignore. Questions such as, is “Sally his girlfriend?” “ is Oggy those kids parent?” “Why do they call Jack the Pumpkin king if he’s a skeleton?” “How come no one else has gone through those doors if they are so easy to find in a forest for those kids?” LOL so much more. I kept feeling my teeth grinding EVERYTIME I’d try to answer… wanting to shout “STOP pointing out how bad character development is in this movie!!!” 😂😂😂
10:09 So, an alternate way of describing this.....Cheer exploited the fact that he had maxed out Charisma stats, chose to attempt the "seduce the dragon" tactic..........and rolled a Nat 20. absolutely wild. A better movie would have had fun with this.
6:30 Wow, that is straight out of that south park episode where the boys (Sans Cartman) become hippies as more hippies move to their town...and learn their goal to rid the world of polluting companies is essential just a normal town.
I’m actually going as jack skelllington for halloween, in fact I watched this video while finishing up my costume (procrastinator), that was another layer to this great video that made it perfect for me. Happy Halloween everyone!
Me too! I’m dressed as Jack Skellington as Santa Claws and gave out those Pokémon “Trick or Trade” mini packets that I would get out from a Christmas stocking! I’ve been dressing as Jack in different holiday outfit for years now, and always giving out themed treats that correspond to each holiday!
OK, Bigfoot saying "Interrogation! Whoopty friggin do!" did get a laugh out of me. If you know you're making cheap schlock, at least swing for the fences. I always thought Nightmare Before Christmas was about midlife crises, but I can see it being about cultural appropriation, too!
I know it's a pretty basic model, but I kinda like the design of the wood witch, or whatever the heck she is, and feel like she probably could have been a pretty menacing antagonist in a far more competent movie.
Please review a genius french cartoon called “Zombilenium”. The story of its creation is super interesting, and includes one amazing rock band and one comic series, which includes movie into its story, even though, without reading the series almost to the end, you’d think, that movie is just inspired by comic.
Let's also remember another legacy that Nightmare helped foster- with his experience with stop motion, Henry Selick would become supervising director for a struggling little studio in Portland in 2002 that would become Laika and helping it to put out Coraline and set it up as the studio it is today.
The characters themselves look like small melted toy figurines, but the backgrounds actually look somewhat good? the characters look so funny with how the style of the background contrasts so much with the 3d models XD
I had a thought for a GOOD animated film for you to take a look at: The Adventures of Mark Twain, the last wholly Claymation movie ever made. (But not the last movie that used claymation, that was Return to Oz, I believe.)
My dad likes to find the most abysmal, uncanny valley animations on the Roku Channel, and a few years ago, he found Witchmas. He now has a running joke that it is our family's favorite holiday film. It is not.
This movie, the REAL Nightmare Before Christmas movie, not what he's reviewing, made me LOVE Gothic things and what not! I was a young child when that movie came out but I fell in love with it so much! That and Lion King were literally, and I do mean literally to the point I broke them and had to buy new ones, watched those two movies ALL of the time! Whenever I could! I watched the Lion King back to back nonstop for a whole day at least. I even remember that too! It was when it had just came out! But I fell in love with Tim Burton movies and even became goth because of him. I loved his movies before it was even cool and now I really HATE how popular his movies are because it's too mainstream. I'm glad the movie is getting the love it definitely deserves but I really can't stand it when hidden gems go mainstream. It just loses all of its...I don't know... It just loses that spark and uniqueness. So another Tim Burton movie took the number one spot; Corpse Bride! It's not talked about nearly enough and I prefer that one over NMBC anyway. I love both but there's just something so hauntingly beautiful about Corpse Bride! I was wanting to be Emily every Halloween that has come ever since and next year I'm finally going to be able to do that! I forget to dress up every halloween once I started my career once out of college, and having no children I don't think about halloween. I can't wait until net year because I'm working on my weight, just need to lose 30 pounds and I will have my beach bod and be ready to be a sexy zombie/skeleton next year! Never did anything sexy so I'm kinda excited!
I hate to break it to you but Corpse Bride is really popular now. Celebs and millions of tiktokers are crazy over it. And stores have a shit ton of shirts of Corpse Bride.

There is actually somewhat of a real Christmas witch: La Befana. La Befana is from Italian folklore, described as an old woman or witch that goes around delivering gifts to children on Epiphany Eve (Jan 5) (source: Wikipedia "Befana" and being raised at a Catholic school where we had to learn everything Italian.) ALSO TWO SPONSORS IN ONE VIDEO?
Wownow probably had no idea about her though. Also some images of La Befana make her look like an uncanny mix between Cotton & Klaus from that creepy mocap Christmas movie.
@@tomdragamer Still makes me wonder if she would've appeared in an Akazukin ChaCha Christmas special considering ChaCha is ALSO a witch(albeit a young one).
From the clips you've shown of Witchmas, it reminds me of the computer animations from the 90's where they ask me to spell "Christmas" and when I boredly type in Presents, they cycle through the last five minutes of dialogue before giving me the prompt again.
Not to be that guy, but nightmare was actually not the first feature length stop motion movie at the time! The Norwegian stop motion movie "Pinchcliffe Grand Prix" (Flåklypa Grand Prix) from 1975 deserves that title! It is even 15 minutes longer then nightmare! And it was actually the inspiration for the pod race in Star Wars episode one 🤠 In Norway, its a national treasure, and i just want to spread the word, since nightmare (wich is a brilliant movie) often overshadow it 👺 But thanks for another great video Saberspark 🤘🏻
Not only that, but he’s instantly discredited by another stop motion animated feature film that he’s already covered on his channel, The Adventures of Mark Twain from 1985, as well as many of the Rankin-Bass stop motion specials that qualify as feature length (I believe the bare minimum to be considered a feature length film is somewhere around 40 or 45 minutes).
@@favoritemustard3542 "Pinchcliffe Grand Prix" was translated to 13 different languages and shown in 30 different countries! I am not complaining at all, just spreading some light over a highly under rated movie when i can. Disney wasnt first with everything you know ;)
Selma's motivation should have been that she wishes Halloween lasted longer so tries to extend it into other holidays. It still wouldn't be good, but it would have made more sense.
I could tell what studio was behind it from seeing the whole "characters standing around at a certain angle and talking endlessly" scene at the beginning... Ruthless Films, aka WowNow, we meet again!
so Disney wasn't there for its initial release like an unsupporting parent but shows up once it starts making money THEN they slap their name all over TNBC merch. more reasons to hate Disney
Danny Elfman had written more movies of his own like this that Disney cancelled. He only got so far as to record the song demos which are actually really good.
@sllawson6 this is true but people who saw touchstone didn't exactly know touchstone was owned by Disney. it's more of a cover up if the movie didn't do well from what I see
I'm with you on the frustration for this soulless rip off, or any soulless rip off of beloved film or series. Also find it a little amusing how Disney didn't want anything to do with Nightmare then, and now it's a huge part of their holiday celebrations. Especially in the parks with the Haunted Mansion getting all decked out, and even meet and greets with Jack and Sally.
Oh god, the teeth! What is going on with the teeth? They move around in characters' mouths, and sometimes they change places or teeth appear and disappear. It's so distracting, and mildly upsetting!
17:20 - Ohhh I see you saw Farm-Tastic Fun! I only ever watched that one for the anthro lady designs, which are not bad. Fun fact, it turns out they were made as assets for a (never made) racing game, and WowNow just bought and mangled them. I have half a mind to buy them and pay an animator to do something better with them. Pity, as Faelyn Fox is particularly nice in that red jumpsuit, she looks like she belongs in the Sonic universe.

My farts are better than Saberspark and Saberfart’s farts 💨
Makes sense
My farts are better than Saberspark and Saberfart’s farts 💨

My brain hoped to hear "fingle" but I knew better 😂

My favorite part is that end when she recruits all the monsters and where just supposed to imagine what be like if she stole Christmas
Lol
I wonder if Candycane's name was actually Candy Cain... Nah, no way they're that clever.
He’s referred to as “Candy Cane” in the credits.
Missed opportunity.
Then, jack skellington: "Ha! everyone has a ripoff except me lol".
Now, “I should have kept quiet .”
Another Athena P. fan I see? Nice!
the AI’s not at fault but its users. it’s a technology that can be used in many ethical and helpful, fun ways.
@@TheAkwarium 100% agree with that statement.
You also forgot to mention that Nightmare Before Christmas is so influential that Jack Skellington is in Fortnite now
Who isn't in Fortnite at this point?
As someone who was born in Ireland I can confirm that the Irish did not consent to this movie-
The Kingdom Hearts music was an awesome touch. ❤
I noticed that too! I knew it wasn't directly from the movie yet I was familiar with it.
Having two sponsorships was a weird one.
There is an interesting old animated show that has a furry version of a historical figure who's name I can't say (first name sarts with A and last name with H).
It's called Alfred J Kwak.
It was an Dutch-, German- and Japanese made show that ran from 1989 to 1991.
so it's a perfect show for you to check out😁
Also happy Halloween

Nightmare before Christmas allows me to do Christmas in October and Halloween in December.
Allowing me to screw with neighbors and passersby.
Questions such as, is “Sally his girlfriend?” “ is Oggy those kids parent?” “Why do they call Jack the Pumpkin king if he’s a skeleton?” “How come no one else has gone through those doors if they are so easy to find in a forest for those kids?”
LOL so much more. I kept feeling my teeth grinding EVERYTIME I’d try to answer… wanting to shout “STOP pointing out how bad character development is in this movie!!!” 😂😂😂

I’m actually going as jack skelllington for halloween, in fact I watched this video while finishing up my costume (procrastinator), that was another layer to this great video that made it perfect for me.
Happy Halloween everyone!
Hahahahhaha I was Oogie Boogie and my younger cousin went as Jack
0:45 I still remember that bit from its VHS trailer
As soon as you started talking about how horrible the studio was I knew instantly this was a WowNow film. WHY MUST YOU KEEP DOING THIS TO US WOWNOW
I believe this movie being a hodge podge of assets, because even the witch’s model is completely different in the movie in comparison to the cover!
9:35 just realizing the mummy IS a downloaded character, it's also in the cocoa ripoff movie
It's funny that the witch on the cover looks nothing like the witch in the movie.

WowNow, have mercy… They actually made a scary Halloween movie but not in the way it should be!

@@Dreamartist47 I get that, but sometimes I end up preferring sometimes the original way he spoke when it came to videos, not just the new ones he's making. Yeah, not even surprised Disney wiped all of their doubt from the internet. They really don’t have any soul sometimes.
1:38 Well it's certainly not a sequel to a movie where one of the game grumps steals Christmas let me tell ya
7:35 I share a name one-letter-off with a character from this movie. I am appalled.
There is actually somewhat of a real Christmas witch: La Befana.
La Befana is from Italian folklore, described as an old woman or witch that goes around delivering gifts to children on Epiphany Eve (Jan 5)
(source: Wikipedia "Befana" and being raised at a Catholic school where we had to learn everything Italian.)
ALSO TWO SPONSORS IN ONE VIDEO?
Wownow probably had no idea about her though. Also some images of La Befana make her look like an uncanny mix between Cotton & Klaus from that creepy mocap Christmas movie.
@@ExtremeWreck Oh yeah I wasn't implying Wownow had the passion to do research for one of their films, just wanted to share a fun fact!
And it was actually the inspiration for the pod race in Star Wars episode one 🤠 In Norway, its a national treasure, and i just want to spread the word, since nightmare (wich is a brilliant movie) often overshadow it 👺
But thanks for another great video Saberspark 🤘🏻
It’s based on a book series too!
Would ppl be complaining if he'd specified "widely released"?
@@favoritemustard3542 "Pinchcliffe Grand Prix" was translated to 13 different languages and shown in 30 different countries! 16:08 WHY DID YOU HAVE TO REMIND ME THIS EXISTS?!
I was looking for someone to point this out
I think every ounce of creativity went into the title.
pisses me off that the mouse said nah this isn't good enough for us , but later in KH halloween town and all that is a disney world....
so Disney wasn't there for its initial release like an unsupporting parent but shows up once it starts making money THEN they slap their name all over TNBC merch. more reasons to hate Disney
Technically it had their print all over it initially, hello ? TOUCHSTONE ?!?!
Danny Elfman had written more movies of his own like this that Disney cancelled. He only got so far as to record the song demos which are actually really good.
@sllawson6 this is true but people who saw touchstone didn't exactly know touchstone was owned by Disney. it's more of a cover up if the movie didn't do well from what I see
That Santa model looks like the Talking Santa app
I know I volunteered for this writing assignment Saber but I will never forgive you for making me aware of this movie lol
That sounds oddly familiar. 7:33
Nightmare before Christmas is really a Thanksgiving movie.
It's like they aren't attached to character rig
17:20 - Ohhh I see you saw Farm-Tastic Fun! I only ever watched that one for the anthro lady designs, which are not bad. Fun fact, it turns out they were made as assets for a (never made) racing game, and WowNow just bought and mangled them. I have half a mind to buy them and pay an animator to do something better with them. Pity, as Faelyn Fox is particularly nice in that red jumpsuit, she looks like she belongs in the Sonic universe.
