- Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as he rolls through the day and replaces the front disk brake pads and rotors on a 2013 Fords Escape Titanium. Now this is a pretty simple job to do but it would be best before you handle this yourself to make sure you have the proper tools, equipment and manual. As always be safe!

4 years later, this video is still helping people. Thank you sir.
Pffff more like five years old and still helping!
Size of the brake calibers it takes Allen wrenches
7yrs now
And this is the kind of Mechanic I want working on my 2015 Ford Escape , very detailed and does everything the way a brake job should be done.👍
Good Mechanic Very Through. Knows His Trade.
Great video and a huge help when I did the brakes on my wife's 2014 Escape. I am sold on fluid film and the caliper hanger and hub cleaning kit made life so much easier. Thanks for the help!
If I was sure that mechanic would do it this thorough like Eric does, I definitely would not do the brake job myself. Video really shows the method I'd call "can't be better". Well done.
Rocking out the videos this week. Thanks Eric!
G'day, Mr.O! Another video in a row this week! Amazing! You really knocked that one out, the replacement of front disk brake pads and rotors on a 2013 Ford Escape Titanium. Thank you!! Cheers! :-)
Four years later and this video still helping out haha thanks for the great info!
Thanks Eric, always like to see the process of how its done from start to finish.
Another SMA video in a row this week! Sweet! Learned some new tricks for when I do my next brake job.
One of the first things I do in the morning is to check for new videos. About this time is when my wife is cooking breakfast. If she hears "Eric has a new video" she know's she's eating alone.
My wife made me fish and spinach for b-fast this a.m.
gross lol
breakfast made for you and a video to watch. That's the life of kings right there 😃
Really great video. Love the care you put into your work at the shop
Have you enter thought of a nationwide car repair show, I think your voice in itself is worth millions.
Bahhh no one would watch this crap
Tell than to Scotty Kilmer....
This is not just a standard brake change this one is with. SMA which is top notch job that show you and tells you and where to go to get more information to perform this job thank you Eric
he did, what should always be done, but most likely is never done as such, more so at the factory service departments, >_
Just want to add a thanks - this video and another one got me through my first brake job! Only hurdle to overcome was a piston that would not compress. Had to go to Auto Zone and rent a compression kit that would turn the piston while pushing on it. Worked like a charm and since rentals are free with deposit, cost me nothing! Unless I don't return it! ;)
Eric, this time last year I had to change my rotors and pads in the from of my Escape. I went with Brembo because that is what they sold at the place my son worked at. I got a super deal on them, or at least I thought. Over the course of the last year my brakes were getting worse and my front rotors were severely warped. I took off the front tires to find that these great Brembos (not), the pads were wore down to 2mm friction thickness and like I said earlier the rotors were warped. The place where I bought them from said that Brembo had some quality issues around that time and they did exchange everything for free. If OEM Ford ones were not so damn expensive I would have went that route. Well I have learned my lesson. Always go OEM.
I too was initially taught to use anti seize. Many years ago, I got to meet a bendix rep. The rep told me anti seize is a petroleum product that deteriorates the rubber boots. Of course, the rep introduced me to some bendix brake lube that does work well.
The introduction of the break clean never gets old!
I wanna find out where I can get that sound effect!
I really enjoyed your video. You explained everything so simply!
Anti-seize, aka "Satan's Butter". Get a dab on you the size of a pencil eraser and by 5pm you'll look like the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz, no matter how careful you try to be.
Aaron Rowland Oh, hell, I love that. So true!
Aaron Rowland your absolutely correct
"Satan's Butter"! I laughed so loudly my wife had to find out what I was laughing about. Good one!
That may be the best name i've ever heard it called! Laughing at my desk, the other guys are looking at me like I am crazy-Mike
Used to work in an electronics factory, and we used white heat sink compound. Just as nasty. People would play pranks by putting it on people's safety glasses on the bridge of the nose piece. Rule number one with that stuff, WIPE IT OFF DRY, DO NOT USE WATER OR IT WON'T COME OFF!
Thanks. Always great to see a detailed video of this. I have rudimentary tools, but enough to do a proper job. An old torque bar, which is why the wheel needs to be turned so it can fit . By the way , 129 ft-lbs is not so easily done! It was a little concerning as the previous Brake job, done by a place starting with "P", had the Caliper plate bolts at 60 ft-lbs! I looked at a few different videos to get a good sense of what to do and look for. You cover the bases so thanks again.
Great work ! Now that's how it's done
I'm waiting on Eric O. to record the voice on my GPS...
-Ok, let's start, seat belts torqued to factory specs!
-In 200 metres turn right and give it the beans!
-Whoa whoa you missed the exit you son of a monkey!
-Now you have to turn back, you Dorman lover!!!
-Now make a U turn, If I can do it, you can do it!
-You've arrived to your destination, I told you, 1,2, BBQ!
The whoa whoa should have been "holy crap biscuit you missed the turn there little fella."
LOL you nailed it.
- There's your problem lady! Police reported ahead!
After the 1,2, BBQ do we get our brake cleen music fix?
My man Eric O back with another great vid!
Killing it with the uploads this week.
so glad to see you're on patreon, people like yourself should be getting paid GOOD cash for the service you provide. The time and effort put in to cranking out these should be compensated, wise move :)
Interesting that the caliper design and hardware on this Ford is almost identical to the brakes on my son's 2009 BMW 323i which I just did the brakes on. Again Eric thanks for the great videos, I always enjoy and learn.
Those look like ATE brand calipers. Just goes to show they're all made from a parts bin.
I like the way your like a young Red Green character but for real life stuff, Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your videos.
Great video, I just changed the rotor and pads for my mother, and this video really helped in the process.
Glad it helped
Love my brake clean, its so versatile, and that air hammer tool for getting of the rotors is a rippa. Stewart, Australia.
My two favorite tools!
EXCELLENT presentation!!!!!
i'd rather listen to "some guy on RUclips" You taught me how to do brakes, this is the exact same setup as my 2010 bmw 530d i did the brake pads last week, was easy IF you have the correct tools as you say, love these simple videos.
This looks very similar to the previous generation Ford Escape as well. I had a 2009 Escape and this looks very similar. Great video as always.
yeah, they've used the "euro-trash" design for a long time now and I mostly like it, except them damned clips that love to eat fingers :))
Tanks you just make my day easier thank you sir
Right on time. I just bought an Escape for my daughter, grest first car.
Your almost at 100k subscribers 👏🏻
Keep up the great work
Easy Breezy Peezy. Just like a cold beer and handy remote - life is simple. Another Great Video! Thx Bruddah
Haha thanks man!
Thank you for the video, very detailed and thorough
Picked up some new tips and like the caliper hook.
I’ve done 3 of these, including the brake hose, the difference between these brake-to-caliper hoses are these are directly threaded EASY, compared to the banjo bolts
good job, thanks for the help, will do mine tomorrow
Excellent vid as always !!
If it weren't for your videos, I'd be very reluctant to repairing and maintaining my cars myself. Of course, for engine, fuel, airbag or transmission issues, I don't mess around and take it to a trusted shop. But for everything else, I feel a bit of confidence giving it a good shot.
Thanks so much man you saved me $100 bucks by doing my escape brakes myself
Eric`s expressions at 4:51 are fantastic for big nasty.
Through and very informative vid thanks, enjoyed watching !!
Erico very excited when that magnum 44 hammer comes out to knock rotors free let alone the drama clip for your brake clean, beats hammering good show 😁
Thanks for the video I needed a refresh!
Nice professional job. All metric nut sizes does suprise me.
Great video, I do recommend using eye and earring protection, you’ll never know how valuable until unfortunately too late.
Thank you so much for this video, it's really good job!
Great video. Just got the Autel Diaglink($109) after seeing you use autel. It's the DIY version of the MD802 it does one make of vehicle and then $10 for each additional make, looks like 3 will fit in memory. It is awesome I can see all modules i believe all the factory PIDS and graph two of them at a time or merge graphs wow. Thanks again. How about a t-shirt for sale with all your colorful phrases...it would be a best seller. Have the viewers suggest their top five phrases and 1-2-barbeque better than a money light.
Rose clip? Phenolic piston? Torque wrench! What is happening here! lol Good stuff. Thanks Eric!
I know right. What will the people think!?
Time to break out the flux capacitor, haha.
Baxrok2 g
Great job again like always
Great video as always! Do a fluid film undercoating one some time too!
Its raining cats and dogs in Texas. I had to cancel a road trip, due to a tornado warning. I was really bummed out thinking my 2 days off will be spent indoors.
Saw another new video from SMA, and I'm now thinking screw the bad weather! Everything is gonna be ok 👌
Time for another SMA binge marathon. 😈
Thanks for the help doing my wife's brakes on her 2014 escape. Well you know what I mean, this video took the mystery out of them and I had the right size Alan socket to take the calipers off. I also picked up the took to clean around the wheel lugs...HUGE help. I also got the hook to hang the caliper which is much safer than balancing it. Keep up the good work.
Ever since having my 1985 bronco piston seize some miles after retracting it to replace the pads, I always open the bleeders before retracting the pistons to get the old fluid out and then flush new fluid from the reservoir down to completely change the fluid.
Thanks for another great video.
I did the front brakes on the brides town and country and they looked like the same as that ford from the clips to the pads and the caliper bracket.
Awesome video
Leaving the turkey baster with brake fluid adds flavor. Also mazda uses a very similar design on most their cars, I think it's the same since the oem parts have fomoco in the Ford script cast in them. Great design for here in ny.
Great video. The wife has a 2016 escape so this will come in handy. If you ever do the rear brakes Please video tape it. I just bought rotors with the new coating on them. I was told there was no cleaning necessary? Finally picked up those caliper hangers. Great stuff Eric.
For the rear caliper on those you need a special tool to screw in the pistons. Do you have one of them? astore.amazon.com/httpswwwy0837-20/detail/B002RDGMNM
LOL yes I do. I bought a cheaper set since I will only be using it on the Escape and my sons Fusion. I would still love to see how it is done. Even if on a similar vehicle. Seeing it done helps so much towards the little things one might run into. Hey thanks Eric.
the biggest thing, make sure you rotate the "piston/tool" around some once it bottoms out to free up the internals and align the piston 180 degree from the brake pad width, ( the "pin" on back of brake pad needs to seat into the caliper notch. I've had them hang up and rotate on initial brake apply (slack take-up) so always check that before placing wheels on, use a mirror if needed :|
Great video as usual. Thanks
Nice video! thank you for sharing.
A good idea to step on the brake pedal a few times after putting everything back together to push out the pads. And also good to take the vehicle for a short drive and make a few stops at varing speeds to bead in the pads and check for proper operation and noise.
surely he does that, but good advice to folks watching and doing it themselves, don't need any accidents.
I nearly always do that, except for folks that were "race car drivers" or "mechanics" for years, they like to break in their own brakes :)
great video
I have a 2014 escape se and I've had a major itch to see how bad this job really is. thanks for the video
easy as pie front brakes, the guide pins rarely ever have seizing issues, the clips can be finger eater/flying eye-killers though :)) the rear brakes are a bit funkier, but still not super bad
there are negitve side effects to this channel. in my head that dramatic music plays every time I grab brake clean at work...
Mr. Random the other day I called the penetrating fluid panther pee everyone looked at me
Haha I've started to say "There's your problem lady,". My Little boy keeps telling me he's not a lady!!
Whenever I'm working in my garage and I grab brake clean I hum that noise too kind of like the Law & Order "dun dun" sound. I probably look insane if someone was watching me :)
Mine is "torque to spec" every time I tighten a nut or bolt.
Mr. Random haha
I love that when he grabs that ! Some funny shit!!
Just did a brake job on a 2012 Town and Country yesterday. Rear pin was frozen causing a spongy feel to the pedal. Rotors were stuck brought out my snap-on air hammer and couldn't get the rotor to break free (weak sauce), brought out the IR (Ingersoll Rand) and took only two squeeze of the trigger to break the rotor free. Heated the bracket with the frozen pin and got the pin moving, only casualty was the rubber boot, which I had to cut before applying the torch to the bracket. Don't really like breathing burning rubber. Great video!
Ahhhh I can smell it now!
common replacement items, pins, boots etc now days it's best to just get a caliper/bracket and slap the whole thing on ;)
I love da the humor and your step-by step correct procedures to complete the job professionally!
Hey Eric can you do a video on rear brakes with a car that has a electric emergency brake. I'm interested in learning how to remove and reinstall them without using the scan tool.
now enjoying some nut and bolt stuff with chilled coke. videos are rolling pretty fast now. great.
What a legend!
Great job again as always Eric. I just did the back on my 2013 and the pistons truned in clockwise. Maybe because it is in Canada not sure.. I see the rear ones you just did didn't turn at all..lol
Excellent. Thank you.
Just watched SK do a brake job, needed to do a "brake relearn"!
41 years old and trying to learn to work on cars. Dad knows all about fixing cars but not so much me. This video is AWESOME love the way you make sure everything is clean as well. I will be following your video as I do my own 2008 Ford Escapes brakes and rotors. Though I will have someone that knows what they are doing along side just in case!!!! GREAT VIDEO!!!!
Thanks dude!!
Gonna have to find one of those Chitlons service manuals.
Very helpful. Thankyou.
I think Big Nasty might need some theme music of her own here soon!
How do I make my flashlight fall like that? I can't seem to do that. Only kidding. Thanks for the great video.
I like to open the bleeder screw when compressing the piston. It prevents fluid reentering the master cylinder, it gets a lot easier to compress, and more importantly it prevents the possibility of triggering an ABS code.
Another great one! If anything i just watch your channel just to see the carbcleaner part lol.
brake cleaner!!!!!! carb cleaner is a bit more malicious
Hey Eric, More Ford repair videos, Please !
very nice job..
Eric, your editing skills are getting pretty good man....I liked the inside wheel turn to an outside shot @12:39 .. attention to detail!!! Or is Mrs "O" the editor??
Hey, you mind commenting on the air tools you used to bust the rust from rotor? Also the cleaning attachments and stuff you tan. Thank you.
Enjoy your videos and they are so helpful.I need some help on broken lug on 2005 Mazda Tribute ..it is front wheel drive and lug on rear is broke and I am not sure how to replace it due to no way to get new one in.The backing plate is in the way and am not sure if I remove the ermergency brakes and then get the backing plate off if there will be room?Do not want to have to try and remove the hub?
Wheres the Safety glasses man 😉 another great video 👍🏻👌🏻
If I still lived in Michigan I would break out the big nasty, too!!
I wish you can make a video of ford escape 2013 replacing the front struts
3 videos 1 week hell ya i like it
More to come!
Justin Harper
YES! 👍
Justin Harper my favorite morning is the morning when I wake up and have a sma notification
But where is MRS O she is better to look at than you!
Thanks for the video could you datail us the anti size products that you use?
Boys, thanks to SMA, I am investing in a 2 stage compressor for the old garage. Then, a Big Nasty!
Haha YES!
xoxo2008oxox I always heard that the difference between men and boys was the size and price of their toys.
I've bought a "Big Nasty" (that I've named THOR) and it's my favorite tool. Just today I had some stuck nuts on a brake chamber. Hit them with the chisel tip and off they went. The chamber was still stuck around the studs so THOR persuaded it out. Then I had to drive bearing races out of a hub. No risk of whacking your thumb with THOR.
You do have to be careful using it though, it's tapped my fingers a couple times when I was doing stuff like hitting cut off wrenches with the smoothing bit to loosen fasteners.
Most state library websites have factory level service information (in Arizona we have Chiltons online) completely free for its citizens. Repair info, wiring diagrams, TSBs. I'm surprised more people don't take advantage of it.
Oh that is a great idea
I (and Eric) live in NY, they don't give you ANYTHING for free here!
Timothy Barney that sucks. Many states offer it. In Arizona you don't even need a library card. Just enter a zip code and you're in!
Here is the link. ezproxy1.azlibrary.gov:2048/login?url=infotrac.galegroup.com/itweb/azstatelibdev?db=CHLL
Someone enter 85901 and see if it works in your state.
it worked for me.I live in Virginia
Links to your store is not working. Is it coming back up any time soon?
Great video.
Hey Eric! Love your videos. I am looking to get new pads for my 2009 Tacoma and my girlfriends 2014 Focus in the near future. Do you recommend OEM for these applications? I know you're not a fan of aftermarket crap (neither am I) but I am wondering if you know of any good brands that have stood out other than OEM.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Eric
I forgot about the nut and bolts videos. They'll help many of our subscribers. I'm saving for a pico. Should I be interested in the touch screen version? What model of the 4 channel scopes do you recommend? Also have you seen the support of picos from Autonerdz. Where do you recommend my purchase? And most importantly what model Dr.O
Titanium, baby!
