    I still remember staying up all night to watch the first landing, and then going to work with only an hour's sleep! And I'm still excited by space travel.

      I'm the same generation as you. I was a big fan of human space flight, but now I can't see any point to it. Robotic flights are far more cost effective. The ISS contributes virtually nothing to scientific research and doesn't inspire kids to take up science. IMO, unless we are really serious about a self sustaining moon base, people will tune out after a few days of TV pictures, just like the Apollo flights. I wish I was wrong, but I can't see that the inspiration will last.

      I'm only 27, so I missed that boat by a large margin, but I have a huge interest in space thanks to my Grandma saving the New York Times from the following morning and I'm so excited to see all of this live! We have Nasa (and CSA) shooting for a moonbase and SpaceX shooting for Mars. It's going to be a fantastic decade, space-wise!

      @@portugalforme1198 actually the ISS is a massive generator of science of all kinds, from geology, to material science, to pharmaceutical and biological sciences. not to mention ISS basically kickstarted commercial activity in LEO.

      @@killadroid2 because they're years late at this point and are using recycled rockets, nothing here is really new or exciting. Yes it's cool to go to the moon but they haven't innovated, realistically. It's cool they're doing it but then you look at the likes of SpaceX, NASA looks like a small company compared to SpaceX when it comes to launching vehicles.

      It will be the second time in a lifetime for me. I was a 9 year old sitting on the couch with my parents in 1969 watching man walk on the moon for the first time. Glad we are going back

      Everything for Artemis I is there.
      And the spacesuits are really much more complex than their predecessors. Their predecessors became dangerous after quite a short time on the Moon, as the Moon's regolith is very hard.

      And Jeff bezos is sueing NASA and SpaceX to stall their progress on the landing system, because NASA didn't choose them for the landing craft.
      That happened because their system is waaay smaller compared to SpaceX starship, but at least 3 times as expensive, if not more (don't know the exact prices).

      Both of them technically.
      Starship will act as a lander for Artemis III.
      If we're talking about orbiting the moon, Orion will be there before Starship.
      In terms of landing, SLS doesn't have any components that will directly land on the moon, so Starship.

    In my opinion, there is no soundtrack more fitting for the return to the moon than “Apollo” by Thomas Bergersen. It makes you feel like it’s YOU who is lifting off that launchpad to pay a visit to our only natural satellite. The entire album which “Apollo” is a part of should be the soundtrack for space exploration in general! ITS THAT GOOD!😁

    I'm so glad my sons will experience our return to the moon...and beyond. As a kid in the 60's, I watched and learned about Apollo and our quest of "landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth". I can't wait for the launch. I hope to be at KSC on the day Artemis begins this generations mission.

      I'm with you, my parents worked for Rockwell International in Downey, Ca and retired from there. I got to go to moms work when the Apollo capsule returned to Downey and I got to be hands on with them and sit in the seats. Loved watching the splashdown and I actually ended up serving on 2 aircraft carriers just like the ranger which picked up Apollo out of the ocean. Jfk CV-67 and broke in brand new Dwight D Eisenhower CVN-69 attached to a A6 intruder squadron. Dreams do come true. We did go to the moon, I have real stuff from those missions. : )

    I'm so happy I'm alive to see, arguably, the biggest step for humanity. I will be able to say that I saw it, that I was there when people stepped outside and started colonizing and building bases in our solar system. That I was alive when this was happening.
    I feel so grateful. These steps will one day be in history books, and people will be wondering how we have felt seeing all of this unfold. Ohhh we were so excited... we were so excited.

    Folks don’t get it, comparing what SpaceX is doing to NASA’s mission is like comparing apples to oranges. Plenty of room for both of them. Go Artemis team, do us proud!

      Naw, there's not room for two super heavy lift vehicles. Especially when one costs $2 billion each time it flies and the other is fully and rapidly reusable. It will cost less to fly Starship and all its refueling missions than just paying for the SRBs alone on the SLS.
      SLS won't even get to claim the title of Most Powerful or Largest Rocket Ever Flown To Orbit. Those titles go to Starship in a few days. An SLS will end up being a really bad taste in taxpayer mouths.

      Artemis 1 is currently targeted for a late December launch

    If it weren't for BO's hampering of the Artemis program we might be seeing some progress on the HLS front. Sad that they're basically delaying a landing system (Starship) that could bring a lot of cargo and the real potential of base-building on the lunar surface.
    Which is what Artemis is all about; long-term sustainable presence on the moon.

      Yes BO are currently preventing money going to SpaceX from nasa but I don’t think it’s really effecting starship development, starship is going to happen with or without nasa

      Starship is just overkill for Artemis Phase 1 - that is, basically a repeat of Apollo. Anything more won't be needed until the Phase 2 lunar outpost.

    Me and generations before me have hoped for a new great space conquest for decades. Projects get cancelled, or defunded across those decades. Now it’s actually happening. Many decades since the last moon landing in 1972 have lead to this moment.

    A great work of modern engineering. The incredible ability to go to the Moon, we are looking forward to it!. We did it with the Apollo program, and now we'll do it with the Artemis program.

      Taxpayers have spent next to nothing developing THAT vehicle. Unlike the $20+ billion we've sunk in to the boondoggle SLS program.

      I'm so happy to have lived in the generation that was growing up during Mercury, Gemini, an Apollo...and now to finally witness them going back. I wish I could make it to see them go to Mars. I'm going to give it my best shot! I still have the newspapers I saved from July 20, 1969, with the headline in large red print, MEN ON MOON

      Pad B was used at the time to give crews more time to refurbish Pad A for Apollo 11 following Apollo 9. Pad B wasn't used again until Skylab 2 as the frequency of Apollo-Saturn V launches was reduced. After the launch of Skylab on the last Saturn V, Pad B was used for Skylabs 2, 3, 4, and ASTP as Pad A's modifications for the Shuttle started immediately afterward.

    Really hope the uncrewed test flight will be happening soon. Really can’t wait. Although in all honesty, after all the constant delays and changes along the way, I’m much more looking forward now to SpaceX‘s attempt.

      Yeah, we wont see SLS doing anything until at least 2022, if not maybe 2023 if Starliner is any indication of Boeing being able to field a working vehicle.

      @@brandonglover2276 yeah, Starliner, also built by Boeing was already built, launched, and in orbit messed up... a lot. It's now been 2 years and Starliner still hasn't flown again. Yet SpaceX is putting humans in orbit with a regularity now.
      Let's not forget that Boeing is the primary on this vehicle and they have an abysmal record for the last 6-8 years in almost ALL aspects of their business. So acting all incredulous about MY comment is really silly. Especially with Starship about to go to orbital velocity and SLS is being pushed to 2022 at the earliest.
