    Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is the fourth studio album by American rock band Wilco, first released on September 18, 2001. Recording sessions for the album began in late 2000. These sessions, which were documented for the film I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, were marred by conflicts including a switch in drummers and disagreements among the band members and engineers about songs. Despite this, the album would be completed in early 2001. The album showcased a more atmospheric and experimental sound than the band's previous work, and has been described as art rock[1][2] and indie rock[3] by music critics. It was the band's first album with drummer Glenn Kotche, and last with multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Jay Bennett.
    Reprise Records, Wilco's record label at the time, refused to release the album as they felt unhappy about the end result; this would lead to Wilco's departure from Reprise. The band subsequently acquired the rights to the album and later streamed the entire album for free on their website on September 18, 2001. In November of that year, Wilco signed with Nonesuch Records, who gave the album its first official retail release on April 23, 2002. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot received widespread acclaim from music critics at release, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of the 2000s.[4] It is also Wilco's best-selling work, having reached number 13 on the Billboard 200 chart.
    Wilco was touring to promote Mermaid Avenue Vol. II in May 2000 when lead singer Jeff Tweedy was invited to play at the Noise Pop Festival in Chicago. The festival promoter offered to pair Tweedy with a collaborator of his choosing, and Tweedy decided to perform with Jim O'Rourke. Tweedy frequently played O'Rourke's album Bad Timing in his car while he traveled during the previous winter. O'Rourke was an accomplished producer as well as a musician, and had produced over 200 albums by the time that Tweedy requested the collaboration. O'Rourke offered the services of drummer Glenn Kotche, and the trio performed at Double Door for the festival on May 14, 2000. Tweedy enjoyed the performance so much that he suggested that the trio record an album together. They chose the name Loose Fur, and recorded six songs during the following summer.[7]
    By the end of the year, Wilco had recorded enough demo tracks to release a fourth studio album (the working title was Here Comes Everybody), but the band was unhappy with some of the takes of the songs. This was attributed to the inflexibility of Ken Coomer's drumming. According to American Songwriter, "virtually every attempt [Tweedy] made to steer Coomer toward the percussive sound he had envisioned for the record sparked a fight."[8] The band decided to bring Kotche into the studio to record with the band. Wilco officially replaced Coomer with Kotche in January 2001, a decision originally proposed by Tweedy and almost immediately approved by the rest of the band.[9]
    The Marina City complex on the Chicago River. The album cover features a photograph of the two towers.
    Guitarist Jay Bennett and Chris Brickley served as the audio engineers, and agreed with Tweedy that O'Rourke would be a good choice to mix the album, after a failed attempt to mix a few of the songs at the Chicago Recording Company and after hearing O'Rourke's "audition mix". One of the conflicts, exhibited in the film I Am Trying to Break Your Heart: A Film About Wilco, was over the ten-second transition between "Ashes of American Flags" and "Heavy Metal Drummer". Bennett attempted to explain to Tweedy that there were several slightly different ways to approach the transition, each of which would yield slightly different results, but Tweedy explained that he just wanted the problem fixed, and was not concerned with understanding the different approaches. Bennett focused on the individual songs, while Tweedy focused on larger conceptual and thematic issues-a tried and true division of labor that had worked well on the four releases on which they co-wrote the material.[10]
    In order to achieve the band's musical goals, Tweedy invited Jim O'Rourke into the studio to mix "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart", and the results impressed the band members. Jim O'Rourke was officially in Wilco from that point. He recorded 6 of the 12 tracks on the album. O'Rourke was then asked to mix the rest of the album.[11] After the album's completion, Tweedy decided to remove Bennett from the band. The album was completed in 2001, and Tweedy believed it to be ready for release. vinyl community wilco poor places vinyl record collecting tips vinyl collection

    Has to be in the running for box set of the year! They covered all the bases here: a great remaster, lots of unreleased material, a stunning live show AND (very importantly) a reasonable price for what's on offer.

    I've been a huge Wico fan from the beginning. Every time They came to my City I never missed seeing Them. Their music got me through some rough times in the 90's.Took my current Wife to see Them at Town Hall in NYC in September of 2011.Had my tickets way in advance,so glad They didn't cancel.Those shows were classic. She got me the original YHF on vinyl for my birthday in November. I didn't even have a turntable anymore. I do now. I cherish that album. Will always love Wilco.Great video.Peace to all.

    My Favorite album from my favorite band. So wonderful to finally have these demos and extra material cleaned up. They sound better than ever. The book is gorgeous. I haven’t put it down. Seen Wilco over 30x from Chicago to Paris. A terrific live set included. Well worth the wait and a steal at $270. 🎶☮️🎶

    This is a stunning box set. I collected mine on Friday lunchtime and have been slowly working my way through the content since then. In short: the remastering is wonderful. A beautiful, rich and warm sound to everything. The alternative versions of the LP are really good, in some cases the songs are as good as the original album itself. The LPs are nice and clean, silent and flat. The live LPs are great. The CD of the Sept 2001 radio interview and songs is a nice touch. The book is great - I’m still reading it. This is how boxsets should be.

    Wilco was one of those bands I had on Ignore back when... money was tight, I was subsiding on a severance package and looking for employment when this was new. The few CDs I bought in '02 were Blue Note and Verve re-issues when on sale at Borders ;-) Caught a video from Mazzy this past summer and he spoke so well of this album I streamed it for the next couple of weeks and was duly impressed. My copy of the re-issue arrived this week and I'm obsessed with it - have it on repeat - kinda wish I had the boxset now!
    Nonesuch does a real nice job - would like to seek out their Emmy Lou Harris and Laurie Anderson releases. I did just pick up Bach Trios by Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Thile and Edgar Meyer.

    They were also pretty canny about the 3 versions reissued. The first is just the album. The second is the super deluxe that you reviewed. A third is the 'deluxe' version which has smaller book and no demos. I appreciate that they made space for the listener who wants the concerts but isn't seeking an archeological dig on the album (even if I opted to go that way myself!)

    Just to clarify, Sundazed only handled the original vinyl release, the CD was released by Nonesuch, which is hilarious as they were under the same WEA umbrella as Reprise, which was the original label that rejected it.
    Also, I love Jim O’Rouke but don’t sell Jay Bennett short. Ultimately I think this album was mainly a product of the creative tension between Bennett and Tweedy. They brought O’Rouke in toward the end of the process to just get the thing finished as the sessions and arguments were starting to drag on. Definitely recommend watching the documentary I am Trying to Break Your Heart if you haven’t seen it.

    • @LJMcG
      @LJMcG Год назад +2

      It’s a Sundazed/Nonesuch release. I think Nonesuch farmed out their vinyl releases to Sundazed at the time. Or maybe it was Tweedy and Management? The Uncle Tupelo Anthology was released on LP by Sundazed around the time of YHF as well.

    • @ikkiwikki
      @ikkiwikki Год назад +1

      @@LJMcG Right that's what I'm saying, Sundazed licensed the vinyl from whomever, probably from Nonesuch. That was pretty common in the late 90s/early 2000s back when the majors didn't care about vinyl. Here's a funny story, Beck's vinyl was released by a tiny company called Bong Load Records during that time while I was working at a record store. Bong Load were going under and to clear their stock of Midnite Vultures our store was able to get a bunch for like $3 each. I grabbed two of them for myself, but boy do I wish I had grabbed more!
      EDIT: Arggh, stupid multiple Google accounts! Yes, I'm the same guy as the OP, lol.

I have a 2008 vinyl copy I purchased when I started getting back into vinyl. It's my favorite Wilco album and as much as I love Jeff Tweedy, I truly believe Jay Bennett was a driving creative force. Check out the mini documentary on the making of it, talk about tension between Jeff and Jay, it's what got Bennet kicked out. Curious, do you have Alpha Mike Foxtrot box set?
