    Irrespective of wether or not one likes Hikaru, seeing him join a Lichess Arena is a dream come true for a chess fan. Strengthening the competition can't hurt one's appreciation for the likes of Magnus, Alireza, Danya, Bortnyk, Andrew etc. in arguably the top chess server out there. I'm glad this finally happened.

    • @NotQuiteFirst

      Yeah absolutely, just a pity Magnus was in troll mode rather than playing properly. It could have been an amazing fight.

    • @maferreira1984
      @maferreira1984 2 года назад +13

      @@NotQuiteFirst That's very true. As I mentioned elsewhere, the World Rapid & Blitz kinda showed that Magnus is not exactly at that point of "winning without even trying", at least for the moment. Although playing this silly bongcloud-ish opening sorta matches his online (frequently drunk) persona and his peculiar ways of "having fun"/trolling, it surely could come out as a ready-made excuse to cover up some kind of real insecurity. It's indeed a pity he went that way.

    • @NotQuiteFirst
      @NotQuiteFirst 2 года назад +10

      @@maferreira1984 It's almost as if Magnus and Hikaru are colluding to blue-ball the fans... but hopefully this won't be a one-off and Hikaru will show up for future Lichess arenas.
      I get the angle of seeing Magnus giving himself a ready-made excuse to lose, but it's pretty human to want to just have some fun and side-step the expectation to win which people seem to relentlessly have for him. It's not like he hasn't beaten Hikaru and everyone else in these events many times over.

    • @SgtJuls
      @SgtJuls 2 года назад +6

      @@NotQuiteFirst at the end of the day though… chess is exhausting and as you mentioned, being the favorite to win ALWAYS and having such high expectations, giving yourself a break from all the seriousness and just enjoying some chess is also healthy… of course, everything in excess becomes unhealthy but online chess has given us the opportunity to watch this side of our favorite players too

    I wonder why Magnus exclusively kept playing the bongcloud in all of his 32 odd games today. I mean Andrew was ranked 38th and came 2nd so Magnus has a great chance of winning if he played some decent opening. I guess he literally didn’t care!
