    The amount of prep these guys are expected to do is insane. “How is Ian not prepared for this opening Hikaru played 1 time 7 years ago?” It’s gotta take insane amounts of time to prepare for all of these obscure lines that have been played by 7 different players and know enough theory in just about every opening.

    • @XoIoRouge
      @XoIoRouge 2 года назад

      @@BrennenChua Pretty sure Magnus simply did the same prep Ian did. I'm pretty sure Magnus did prep on all of the candidates because he's not actually playing so wtf else is he gonna do. Yes, he has fantastic memory; so do the other candidates because those types of folks naturally succeed in chess (like tall people in basketball). But no one actually remembers SOMEONE ELSE's game from 7 years ago. Instead, they do research on their opponent before hand. This is called "prep". See how they play certain openings. Due to the internet and chessbots these days, it's extremely easy to get data from a single opponent, sorted and identified. THEN they remember it.

    • @XoIoRouge
      @XoIoRouge 2 года назад

      @OP: I was thinking the same thing! When Gotham said that, I forgot for a brief second that Gotham's prep for his youtube video isn't just for show; and he EXPECTED Ian to prep for Hikaru's opening. Legitimately every time Gotham has said, "All of these moves have been played before." I assumed that was a nice little nod to how chess games have branching paths of decision making or whatever; No, it's because the players PREPARED FOR IT by reviewing one of their older games. Crazy amount of work goes on behind the board!

    28:54 Magnus was spot on with his comment about Ian. This format is especially favorable for his play style. No increment means his faster play style puts the time pressure on his opponent. He "plays poor moves quickly" because now the opponent has to burn time to think and understand why the move is not accurate and why their position is now favorable. All Ian has to do is not straight up blunder and he can hold most of these situations to a draw when the opponent gets nervous about time pressure and goes for a repetition

    • @harry_krish
      @harry_krish 2 года назад +6

      If Ian's intention was to make hikaru burn the time with quick moves why would he settle for draw when hikaru has only 8 mins for 10 moves.? You just blitz out moves and settle for draw? that's not the way candidates to be played i think.

He wants someone hungry for blood, happy to play on a knifes edge, I think that's why he wanted firouzja but he's been "sloppy" this tournament so far. I like how Fabi has some really different ideas for his openings everytime. Hikaru has been impressive ngl, if not for missing one or two key winning moves, he's been playing the best imo. I just love Rapport ever since the Grand Prix. His style of play is super entertaining and very difficult to play cause of how risky it is so he's super good and I honestly want him to win the candidates.

    I don't know why some people lose their mind when magnus comes across as arrogant
    1. He openly admits he is arrogant sometimes and he says things like he hates when people say he's humble, more than he hates being called arrogant.
    2. Why shouldn't he be arrogant he's 100 elo higher than his contemporaries and the last guy to challenge him for the world title gave him a game for about 1/8 matches before he lost out of 12.
    3. People always look back in history and say I don't think that guy was the best in the sport ever because the people he was playing against weren't that good, so if you look at it like him defending his legacy rather than him being arrogant I thin more people would understand him more when he says things like this.
    Oh and also imagine the insane ego boost you would have if Levy gassed you up every time you shared your opinion
