- In todays episode, it's time to remove the cylinder head on Dustin's Massey Ferguson 35 Diesel. We do some wrenching and uncover the issue causing the low compression. Hope you enjoy.
Hey everyone. Dustin here. Thanks for coming back and checking out our progress on the ol massey. Far from being done with her but glad to see the interest and comments. Well have her fired up before you know it.
It'll be a runner before too long 😁👍 Good cleaning, some new gaskets and it will be grading gravel with the blade just like it was years ago my friend 🔧🔩
These diesel 35 Massey Ferguson tractors are really tough, we call them a 'Fergie' in Australia. Enjoying your project with her rebuild.
@stephenbell8323 thanks for the view and kind comment 🙂👍
Hi Guys,
I was raised on a Dairy Farm in Victoria Australia, I now live 3,500Km north in Far North Queensland, I’m now 75 years old, I’ve spent many hundreds of hours operating a Fergus 35, this brings back fond memories.
Thanks for the view and kind comment Vula. 🙂👍 Glad to hear you enjoyed the video 🔧🔩
Mr Zane We demonstrated holding a car in the air by one seat belt. They are strong. Thanks for sharing and stay safe
Hey, That's pretty cool *Mr.Hal* 😁👍 I appreciate you stopping by especially with your busy schedule. It really means a lot my friend. Take care and be safe out there 🔧🔩
I use copper coat spray every chance I get. Naw Zane.... nobody's been in there before... There's always a stack of washers to take up the too long head bolts...LOL You said it right when you said its just an old tractor not a Rolls Royce. Now if its a family heirloom, go the whole gambit....total rebuild, especially if the old timer is still alive to see it done. But personally I get 'em as good as I can, and get 'em back out the door to use. Its easy to get over your head pretty quick with expenses...and you still have an old tractor that's barely worth the parts ya put in, much less the time. Dang Dustin...40x60 !!?? You'll be killin' it man !! Thanks for the video....you guys rock !!
Thanks for the kind words Wendell 😁👍 I greatly appreciate you stopping by. Oh yeah, I'm envious of his new shop as well. I don't know what it would be like to have a heated shop in the winter! 🤣
@@HODGEPODGEDODGEGARAGE Nows the time to think of in floor radiant heat. The PEX tubing that goes in the concrete is very cheap. The thermal barrier, 2 inch Styrofoam, is more expensive than the tubing, but very necessary. The good thing about in floor radiant heat is the warmest part of the building is down low instead of up at the 16 foot height. And it will be unbelievably warm on your feet as a result. Of course, if he just wanted like a small heated office area of 15 x 15 he could put the pex tubing in one circuit in that area and heat it with a water heater very easily.
At least you found the culprit! When Dustin gets the parts to re-install the head, I would suggest going with the upper end of the torque spec. It should be a good little tractor once it's back running again.
Hey! 😁 Good call on the torque spec. Probably wouldn't hurt. I'm glad you stopped by my friend. Hope you're doing well. I should be free tonight if you wanna call and catch up 🙂👍
Very cool, guys! Looking forward to see both the tractor and the new shop!
Hey!! 😃👍 thanks for the view and kind words Eirik! I hope you're doing well. Been working on anything lately?
@@HODGEPODGEDODGEGARAGE Kind? No, I'm just honest. I was originally going to watch Vice Grip Garage's latest episode but ditched that plan for this dream team instead 😎 -Oh, I've been working! Big projects! Too big to even film ....... no, I've freed up the bolt that holds my spare tire in my daily. Yup, one whole 🔩 . 🤣
Sorry for the delay on returning to this project. I've had some things going with trying to get us a better work space for it. Parts are here just need to finish the shop. We will be back on it soon.
Be back soon indeed my friend! 😁👍
I would take a machinist stone and go over all the gasket mating surfaces and get it as flat as possible then throw it back together and see what happens. Great update can't wait for the next one. Take care guys.
Thanks for the view and kind words August! 🙂👍 I greatly appreciate that my friend. I hope things are going well for you. Yeah, hopefully the surfaces are flat and not warped. We'll see. Take care 🔧🔩
@@HODGEPODGEDODGEGARAGE I agree take it to a local machine shop and have them check the head, work the valves, and deck the gasket surface. It'll save you a lot of time and work and be great piece of mind that it will last for another good long while.
@@traviskingrey4335 thanks for the kind comment 🙂👍 I appreciate the view as well. 🔩🔧
Seat belt lifting, I never thought about that before! I'm excited for your friend's new building. It sounds like it will be a sweet setup. Cheers 👍😁
Oh yeah Andy! 😁👍 I'm excited for him as well. Gunna be nice to have heat in the winter for his projects. Thanks for stopping by 🔧🔩
Great video 👍, I would spend a little as possible. the only thing you have in it is time and labor . Zane, have a great week .
That's very true Brian! 😁👍 I greatly appreciate the kind comment and you taking the time to watch the video. I hope things are going well for you. Take care and be safe 🔧🔩
Gotta love old tractors! I’d love to see it run again. Awesome video brother!
Thanks for stopping by Alex! 😁👍 I hope you're doing well my friend. Hopefully it will be running soon. Stay safe and happy wrenching 🔧🔩
@@HODGEPODGEDODGEGARAGE I am thanks, hope you are too Zane!
Good video again it was good to hear from you again you will get The tractor fixed keep up the hard work my friend and be safe have a good night
Hey there Glenn! 😃👍 I was just wondering how you were doing! Glad to see a comment from you. Things are going well for me. Take care and I'll talk to you soon 🔧🔩
Good to see another video from you Zane. Looks like it might be a runner, and that shop will get a lot of good use when it's finished.
Oh, for sure Derek! 😁👍 Dustin's doing what I can only dream of at this point with the shop build. I'm happy for him. Be nice to have heat in the winter 🤣 I appreciate you stopping by my friend. Take care and be safe 🔧🔩
Well it’s not the best news in the world, but it’s certainly not worst case scenario either. That “head bolt” that someone used washers under was pretty comical🤣! I think the story of why it was parked in the first place makes perfect sense. She might not be in tip top shape, but with the right parts I think you guys will have no problem getting to hear it run again. I’m glad you guys are having a good time wrenching on it. Really enjoyed the video Zane take care man😀👍
Hey Cody! 😀 Thanks for the kind words and for swinging by. Yeah, at least the inside wasn't too rough. I think it will still run but we'll have to see. Have a great Sunday afternoon my friend 🔧🔩
Great video, Zane and Dustin!! I'd stone the head and smooth over the pistons and call it good. We probably would have done that on the old farm of my great grandpa's..
As always, a pleasure to see your video, Zane. Peace and love my friend, from Michigan!!
*Hey there Brian!* 😃 I'm glad to see a comment from you my friend! Yeah, we'll check the surfaces. Hopefully the head isn't warped. 😬 Peace and love your way my friend. Take care and be safe out in this crazy world! 🔧🔩
Awesome video I would suggest you run a straight edge across the head and maybe the black more than likely it wouldn't need to be machined down just my thoughts
Thanks for the kind comment Bill 🙂👍 Yes sir, Dustin is going to straight edge the surfaces and see what he finds. Hopefully everything checks out. Hope you and Debbie have a wonderful weekend. Take care 🔧🔩
That's a cool tractor. Be nice to see it running then rebuild it.
Thanks for the kind words Brandon 🙂👍
Good morning Zane and Dustin!! I bet that head gasket was reused when whoever was in it last time and thats why it’s got that copper spray on it. It was common in days past to reuse a head gasket. I wouldn’t worry about decking the head as long at it passes the straight edge test, I also wouldn’t be worried about those pistons. If it was me I’d just clean them up best as I could and send it back to work. One word of caution when dealing with an engine with removable cylinder liners, it’s a good practice to use a few bolts with large washers to hole the liners in place while you bar the engine over. Sometimes the pistons can have enough resistance against the cylinder wall and it’ll pop the liners up, sometimes very little and you won’t notice it but it will throw off your cylinder liner protrusion and then the head won’t seal properly. I had it happen once so now I always hold them in place with bolts and washers. Keep up the good work fellas - it’ll be great to hear it run again!
Hey Nathan! 😁 Thanks for the tip on the liners. We'll be sure to try that next time we're working on it. Great idea my friend. I appreciate you stopping by. I'm gunna try to watch your newest upload tonight. Glad you're making progress as well. Take care, be safe and keep wrenching! 🔧🔩
Beautiful video zane!!
I appreciate the kind words my friend! 😁👍 Thanks for stopping by 🔧
What a shame you never come to a conclusion with the 35
Dustin is in the beginning stages of building a shop for his channel. The parts have been ordered for the tractor. Give both of us some time and there will be another video 🙂👍
Zane is back!!! Finally
Hey there Dale 😁👍 Thanks for tuning in my friend! Hopefully things are going well for you 🔧🔩
@@HODGEPODGEDODGEGARAGE hope the same for you as well! Dont work too hard man, took me a long time to figure that out haha
Sounds like you’ve got a good plan. Those piston tops are a little banged up, but the valves and the cylinder walls looked ok. As long as you get a good seal it’ll run. A new head gasket should fix her up.
Very true 🙂👍 Hopefully we'll have the tractor going before too long. Take care and thanks for stopping by 🔧🔩
Great video. It's exactly what I would do. Clean surfaces and new gasket. Maybe hone the cylinders a tad bit. A tractor like that in my area with a diesel engine would probably be at least 5 or 6 k
Thanks for the view Stephan! 🙂👍 Hope things are going well for you my friend! 😁🔧
Keep at it, this old girl needs to run.
Thanks for the kind words of encouragement *CRR Pop!* 😁👍 Glad you stopped by and happy wrenching to you 🔧🔩
Those flannels are awesome lol
LOL! 🤣 thanks Scott. Hope things are going well for you 🔧🔩
@@HODGEPODGEDODGEGARAGE well I been working on my 84 chevy one ton here lately lol
I am setting up my channel in Vermont. If you ever wish to send this tractor to a new home, let me know. I am planning to do a complete restore. Thanks Guys!
Congratulations on the channel ! 😁 The parts have been ordered for this Massey. Dustin and I are planning an Episode 5 on this tractor before winter. Thanks for the comment and happy wrenching 🔧🔩
Second!! Ace! Really like the idea of working with what's there to get it running! Really liked the simplicity there! Was relieved to see it mainly being a gasket issue. Might even be able to clean up the piston tops some. Always looking forward to what's next. Well done my friend! Blessings and respect!
Thanks for the kind words David! 😁👍 Always appreciated my friend. Blessings and respect your way as well. Take care and keep on wrenching 🔧🔩
Not sure what you've got there. The MF35D had a Perkins 3 cylinder diesel. So are you sure that's the original engine?
I'm not 100% sure. It could have been swapped but others have said it's the standard engine for the tractor. Dustin and I are just going off what people have told us. We're not too familiar with tractors of this era. Thank you for stopping by though Robert 🙂👍
They did a 4 cylinder version as well in diesel. It was notoriously hard to start compared to the 3 cylinder Perkins. I'm restoring my dad's 1965 MF135, the one after your one. Basically the same but a square bonnet, not round. At least I was able to drive mine to it's current place. Dad had it from nearly new and I learned to drive on it. This is the first of your videos I've watched Zane and, as a Brit, I'm impressed. Anyway, hello from Liverpool UK and keep up the good work!
Also interesting what Dustin was saying about value... in the UK, in good running order, that or an early MF135 could be worth from £5000 - £7500 and full restored over £10,000.
Those old tractor engines are pretty forgiving. Fresh gaskets and it will run like a top.
Hopefully so Jason! 😁👍 Glad to see a comment from you my friend. I hope life is treating you well. Looking forward to an upload from you when time allows. Take care and be safe 🔧🔩
LOL hey you could've just gone bibbies and no shirt, that's pretty common farmer attire too, and then it cools off and you forget the flannel again.. it sucks getting older and losing your memory don't it? That thing seems like the perfect candidate for a small block or 4.9L straight six swap, a lot more power than factory and a lot easier to find parts for. That's the nice part about the old Ford tractors is they just used a standard truck trans with the tail housing changed so literally anything could bolt up to them so easily. My high school welding teacher had a 1929 Ford tractor with a 21 stud flathead swapped into it, he sold the thing for a grand! I wish I could've had it, it sounded so good.. would've driven that thing to school everyday instead of riding my bike.. would've gotten less hate for it for sure. Holy shit those valves are SHOT! Your valves are supposed to be flat with the head, not recessed into the head.. That looks like someone did a valve job and ground off the head of them and said "this'll be fine" when they needed to get new bigger valves.
Oh yeah, I've seen a few Ford 9N's with flatheads! 😃 Those are awesome! That would have been the coolest ride in the parking lot at school for sure! Now that you mention it, I think you're 100% correct on the valves. I didn't even notice until you brought them up! 😵 We'll make sure before things go back together. I appreciate you stopping by my friend. Hopefully things are going well on your end 🙂👍 Talk at you later 🔧🔩
@@HODGEPODGEDODGEGARAGE been going to PT once a week for four weeks now working on my back.. hurts like hell for a couple days afterwards.. I can bend down and touch the floor (while sitting) with my feet out wider than my hips now. Other than that.. found out I have a nodule in the left side of my thyroid gland on my neck -.- what's one more medical condition? Saw a psyche last week and he turned out to be one of the two asshole Sikhs that went to my high school that I absolutely hated.. Once again nice guys finish last while the assholes end up with a good life. My doctor wanted me to talk to a psyche/shrink to find something to get my mind to turn off and let me sleep at night instead of during the day.. I haven't picked the stuff up yet but even when I do I'm going to try some natural remedies first, tried melatonin last night and it was gross and didn't even do anything, probably actually made me less tired.. I'm going to try coffee (caffeine makes me go to sleep) and then ultimately weed if I can find a better tasting indica because it's legal here.. I've actually got a really nice one I grew this summer that's REALLY fun to smoke but it doesn't help with sleep any, just helps let me be dumb and laugh for a bit and has barely any smell or taste.. Unfortunately it didn't produce really well and the clones all died so what little I have is all I have until I figure out what seeds I have that I dropped made the plant show up in my compost bin. That's one of the few plusses to living in California is that it is legal.
As for other stuff, the psyche is pushing me to push my doctor harder to try and get on disability so I can get out of the house and do things.. My mom is getting to the point where she agrees with me that I need to get something that gets good mileage because me driving the 03 Ram 2500 HD 4x4 back and forth to town at 11.3mpg is getting expensive and the difference in mileage between it and say a Mini S Clubman, even having to run premium will still be less than paying for the Dodge's gas even when covering the cost of registration and insurance. (those things are actually cheap to register and insure, especially seeings how I've never gotten a ticket.. yet and having just hit 37 it should be even less)
As for the thyroid thing.. I'm waiting for my ENT to call me and make an appointment for a follow up or call and say we need to make an appointment for an ultrasound to figure out if it's cancerous or not.. the only reason I know about it is I read the review of the CT Scan on the hospital site :P just like I found out what my back Xrays came back as.. which I've developed bone spurs on the front side of my lumbar vertebrae and most of the discs are collapsing.. great... nope.
AAAAH, just get a knotted cup brush Zane for your DeWalt and make the tops of those pistons smooth again. It'll be just fine!!
Hey, thanks for the comment Dave! 😁👍 Been hearing your name come up on Low Buck Garage! James is a cool fella. I hope things are going well for you my friend! 🔧🔩
Those things were built to last and be repaired , unlike things today that are throw always 🇺🇸
Very true Andy! 🙂👍 I appreciate the view and comment. Take care 🔧🔩
Merry early Xmas zane!
Same to you Tino!! 👍
Hey guys! love the videos! I was recently given a tractor exactly like that. BLESSED BY GOD! GBTGATC.
I've been looking at my tractor and diagnosing the problems with my tractor and I was told that I have to replace the pto drive cone, or whatever you call it lol. But they told me that the splines on the pto are wore out and need to be replaced. I turned the pto shaft and noticed that it would freely spin in certain areas and the other areas it would have some hesitation. I could also hear the gears clinking or rubbing together in certain spots. I hope that it won't cost too much to fix up, but I will do what I have to do to get it running. Please post another video on your tractor. Yall are doing a great job! GOD BLESS!
Hey Taylor! 😁 I'm glad to hear you got a tractor like this one. It should be handy once you've got it fixed up. Hopefully your tractor can be fixed without too much headache. I'm glad you stopped by and I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the video. We haven't made any progress due to winter, but as soon as the weather brakes we're gunna get back to work on this Massey. Take care, be safe and happy wrenching on your project 🔧🔩
I wouldn’t waste the money on machining the head. Unless you’re planning a a complete rebuild. Unless you spot something in the valve train.
True Stephen 🙂👍 Hopefully we don't find any more surprises. I appreciate the comment and for you stopping by to watch. Take care and I hope to catch you next time 🔧🔩
Nice project guys.
Thanks for the view and comment Mark! 🙂👍 Greatly appreciated. Take care and stay safe
I love budget tractors, i think this one should run again just fine as long as the head seals well. I don't remember if it was talked about earlier, but does it have a PTO?
Yes sir 😁👍 Luckily it does. I appreciate you stopping by. Glad to see a comment from you my friend. Stay safe out there 🔧🔩
I wonder if it inhaled something so they removed the head to check it out then decided wasn't worth fixing so just slapped it back together with the old gasket and sprayed it down with that copper crap just to try to seal it it.
That's always a possibility Brandon. You never really know. Thanks for tuning in and I hope you're doing well. Take care 🔧🔩
You fella's need a socket wrench set.
Oh, there is a set in the shop. We were just working in the heat and were losing track of where the tools were. Thanks for stopping by 🙂👍
Good show better than tv
Thanks for the kind comment Don. I appreciate you stopping by and take care 🙂👍
Zane, that engine in that tractor is a called a Standard diesel. It is British diesel. They were notorious hard starters without the glow plugs. I have one that i tried to bring back to life, and then discovered a cracked block. I have a brand new set of injector tips for that, Ill have to look and see if i can find them, I also have the correct exhaust elbow for it. Where are you located if youre close by, youre welcone to them.
That's incredibly kind of you! 🙂👍 I'm located in Missouri. I'm sure that Dustin would pay you for them. Get ahold of me through email if you want. It's my channel name, all one word and no under scores at gmail dot com. Can't post the actual link or YT deletes it. Thanks for the view and kind words as well 🔧🔩
Throw it back together with a new gasket
That's the new plan Cory 🙂👍 Parts are ordered and hopefully there will be another tractor video soon. Take care and thanks for tuning in 🔧🔩
That's part of the plan. Thanks
Looks like last video was a year ago. Are you doing more on the tractor?
Yes, my friend Dustin built a new shop and the tractor revival will take back off this fall 🙂👍 Thanks for watching
Looks like it could be a runner. 😎
We're hoping so Nathan 🙂👍 It may be rough around the edges but it should still run and operate. I appreciate you stopping by my friend. Take care and happy wrenching 🔧🔩
If you get a break knife sharpening stone you can run it across the cylinder head sealing surfaces to make sure they are clean and straight before you put it back together with a new head gasket
Great idea 🙂👍 Yeah, hopefully nothing is warped. We will see. Thank you for stopping by and leaving a kind comment. Hope you're doing well and take care 🔧🔩
Just found your channel and love the videos - I have a diesel 35 here in New Zealand and am looking to get it back running. Any progress updates on your one?
Thanks for the view and kind comment. 🙂👍 My friend Dustin ( he owns the tractor) built a new shop and we're hoping to get back to the tractor soon. He ordered new gaskets and bolts. We'll be putting it back together once the weather gets a bit warmer. Take care and talk to you later 🔧🔩
Spend some money and fix it right then you know what you have. If you price a good used tractor that size or heaven forbid a new one the money you spend is peanuts compared to new. I have a 1971 65HP 2020 Deere I just put 5000 in a completely rebuilt engine and fuel system. New is many times that. Service the trans and fix it and use it....
Oh yeah Johnny! New tractors are pricey! Thanks for stopping by and for leaving a kind comment. Take care and I'll talk to you next time 🙂👍
These motors get eaten out on the inlet side if you don't keep good coolent and conditioner in them my old one got heap pin holes in the block .
Oh wow! 😮 We'll be sure to check the inlet side out. Thanks for the information Alan. Take care 🔧🔩
Get a new head gasket and a new head stud and put it back together and run it.
Since the engine mostly checks out, that's the plan Chuck. Thanks for stopping by and for leaving a kind comment. Take care 🙂👍
Are there more vids in the tractor saga? I just see the 4 parts right now. I don't know why these popped up in my feed just now (May 2024) since I follow lots of tractor related stuff. I have a MF35 diesel too, but it has the Perkins 3cyl engine. I use the tractor for weed spraying and mowing.
I bet your tractor is handy to have around 🙂👍 The project was paused because Dustin built a brand new 60x40 shop on his property. This summer the videos will continue and he has the parts ready to be installed. Hopefully soon the tractor will run. Thanks for stopping by 🔧🔩
Hi what happened to the rest of the rebuild, is there anymore coming?
Hey, thanks for the view and comment 🙂👍 The project was halted due to the winter months. I plow snow and my friend Dustin is an hour away from me. Not to mention neither of us have a heated shop (as of yet). He has ordered parts and we should have another video out soon when the warm weather is here to stay. Take care and hope to see you again soon 🔧
wow, that's going to be a big shop, kot's of room..lol
Oh yeah Derek! 😁👍 His new shop will have plenty of room for projects. Thanks for stopping by 🔧🔩
What's happened to the Tractor Rescue? It's been a year!!
Thanks for the comment John. 👍 Life always comes first. Dustin was happily overwhelmed by the positive response to this series. Thought about starting his own channel for years and this tractor lit the fires again. He is almost finished with a 40x60 shop that he built on his property. Done most of the work himself. He built the garage to help with this project and others. Both Dustin and I are hoping to continue this project about mid summer when the shop is 100% done. The tractor parts have been ordered and are just waiting. Both of us work full time jobs and I live over an hour away from him. During the winter I plow snow and can't work on projects. Hope you understand. Have a great evening 🔧🔩
is that the perkins engine?
Yes sir 🙂👍 Thanks for the view and comment/question. There should be another video in the series before winter.
Wassup zane
Hey there Mike! 😁👍 I hope you're doing well. Thanks for stopping by 🔧🔩
Just wondered if this tractor was still in the radar to get running…….
Sure is 🙂👍 The tractor was shelved during winter. The parts just showed up last week. There should be a video out soon 🔧🔩
Sorry for the delay on returning to this project. I've had some things going with trying to get us a better work space for it. Parts are here just need to finish the shop. We will be back on it soon.
Just rering it and hone the cylinders.
That may be what happens in the near future. Thanks for the view and comment Thomas. Hoping to have another video out on the tractor soon. Take care 🔧🔩
Would love to see you end this series
Thanks for the comment. The parts have been ordered for the tractor. Dustin is almost finished with a 40x60 shop that he put on his property. Once the shop is finished, the video series will continue. We're both planning to start putting it back together about mid summer. Have a nice evening 🔧🔩
