Urban sketching using line and wash, ink / pen and watercolour, is my signature style. And there are a lot of reasons why I enjoy this most in my sketchbooks.
In this video I'll give you a tutorial of my full process for capturing quickly but interesting sketches. And I'll also go a step further and given you insights, tips and tricks into why I enjoy sketchbooks so much.
The tutorial includes and a tour of some of my urban sketching sketchbooks from the past, and a look at the brand new moleskin sketchbook I'm using now.

Always love the interesting buildings.
Glad you like them!
I like the addition of the punch of colour although I might have used the reds on their clothes perhaps?
Thank you for sharing. I've been avoiding adding people into my sketches, but your videon has inspired me to give it a try. Moving away from perfectionism has been a huge challenge and it's taken a few years to adjust my whole approach to art instead of putting all my efforts into one painting only to be crushed when it fails. Ink sketching has taken the pressure of me which is brilliant!
So this week I will have a go at continuous line sketches and add in some people and maybe the occasional hound! 👍
Thanks for the lovely comment and ideas! Have fun experimenting
Love your relaxed teaching style.
Thanks
I've been following a local urban sketching group and was always marvelling at the lovely sketches made by people in the group. I had no idea that loose urban sketching is even a technique! I'm so happy to come across your videos. Thank you for sharing your processes in such details! I'm going to try a "sketch along" your video later! (You make loose lines so easy - my lines are too straight. LOL!)
Brill! Have fun :)
Awesome video!
Thanks for the visit
I was sketching along with you! I believe the only way to not overdo a sketch is through linework. The more lines the better imo hahaha. Thanks for this!
Thanks for sharing!
great tutorial 🤩
Cheers!

@@TobySketchLoose Have fun and make a nice channel!
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Hello Toby. I love your style. It’s perfect for catching the essence of a place, and something I try to do on holiday (though not with much success, so your tutorials are very inspirational for me). When you use the water brush do clean it every time you use a different colour or do you just dive straight in and clean your paints afterwards? Thanks. Sue.
Very much a mix, but often I don't clean it :D
Thankyou Toby. This looks like a good travel set-up.
Hi.. Toby #1 do you like/ use Ivory colored paper? #2 do you use distilled water or tap water for your watercolors?
I've never used Ivory colour paper (except some sketchbooks that are lightly toned) - I've seen other people use it and very impressed by what they can do with it. But not an experiment I've had yet.
I use tap water :)
Thanks for your support..
Hi Toby, what ink do you use in your lamy? I tried a couple of waterproof inks but I’ve found they often quickly gunk up snd stop the flow…
Yes good question! I have a video coming out on this - but it's not yet up. So, in short, I use platinum carbon black ink - it theoretically can block up nibs, but I've never had a problem. Even when i've lost a fountain pen for a few months and then used it again it's always been fine.
have you published any books?
On its way, very slowly!
