- Thanks for tuning in to watch my urban sketching, ink and watercolour tutorial! Don't forget to check out my channel where I have hundreds of different urban sketch tutorials, as well as other watercolour and ink sketching guides for everyone from beginners to more advanced!
If you'd like to support my channel you can buy me a 'Coffee' on KoFi - ko-fi.com/tobyurbansketch
When I reach my goal I'll upgrade my sketching tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos! Perhaps my face, perhaps my watercolour palette, or some close ups of my process!
In this video I show you how I use my sketchbook to experiment and prepare for a finished piece. By breaking down this challenging image using simple rules of perspective, and adding washes of watercolour layer by layer, we can produce something fun and enjoyable without the stress!
The reference features 3 point perspective, meaning there are 3 different vanishing points to consider. Being aware of this, and some simple measuring using our pen means we can easily get our sketch to be accurate. And with the basic shapes laid down we can play a little with the perspective to highlight different features.
Simple colours and focussing on values across the image lets us then bring life and fun to the finished sketch.
For me, this piece is my first 'warm up' for a commission - and my friend, who asked me to do this, has kindly given me permission to film the process and pop it up for you.

Thanks again!
Really useful stuff!!! I am endeavoring to shift toward loose pen & ink sketching with watercolor “splashes” and highlights…your techniques and explanations are spot on!!! Thanks!!!
Wonderful!

Great video!! I m just trying to grasp the basics of prospective while sketching, I ve found this content really helpful!😊 Thank you Toby, keep going 💪🖌️
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the lovely comment!
I really enjoyed watching this demo. Learnt a lot. Thanks Toby.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Most enjoyable start to my day thank you. I think with practice I could get to the stage of relaxation rather than slightly stressing about the process. Have a super Sunday Toby!
Sounds great! Good luck 🍀
@@TobySketchLoose Thanks.

It'll come 😊

Love your videos Toby - thank you so much and could could you tell me the make and size of the pens you use please? I use Micro pens and quite like them but would like to try the ones you use.
Winsor Newton 0.1 and 0.3 are my favourite fine liners, normally I use fountain pen. You can check out my supplies on urbansketch.co.uk/supplies
Really enjoy your sessions. An obsession with precision resulting from years building detailed models of aircraft etc needs breaking, and you help. Have you an image of final piece resulting from this sketch?
I'll have a scan of it somewhere! And the sketchbook I imagine!
Where do you get moon glow color …. You always mention it …. 😊
I've got a link on urbansketch.co.uk/supplies enjoy!!!
@@TobySketchLoose Absolutely love your videos BTW !
Se nota que este es más viejo, ahora estás más relajado
Yes indeed!! 100% ☺️🎉
sometimes your sketches seem to be over lit.
The black lines of your sketches look as though they are silvery white and make it hard to see on screen. This was especially so on your Sketches TEXTURE vid.
Can you somehow move your lighting to a different position?
Hi Peter, lighting is an ever going issue in my studio. thanks for the feedback. This video is quite old, I think back when I was filming on my camera.
I've actually just upgraded my camera now that I can afford to, so videos I'm filming now (which will be up in around october) should be much better. Better lit, with bigger sensor, and in 4k not HD - still experimenting with this set up, but certainly an improvement.
