I am interested in learning urban sketching and stumbled across your channel. I’m so impressed by your content and instruction. Your very pleasant voice is an added bonus. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Excellent. Thank you! Please consider creating a beginner's series of videos. I think it would be a very encouraging initiative so beginners would be able to understand how to better start. I also enjoy the way you demonstrate the steps, its clarity and pace.
It’s great to see you showing Holbein watercolors, which in my experience are of the highest quality. For instance, the color “viridian” is such a great mixer for greens, and the Holbein brand does not break up like other brands. I love the “leaf green” color, which captures beautifully leaves as they are first unfurling.
So much helpful information. Wish I had see this 18 months ago when I started painting with water colour, it would have saved me a lot of time and materials 🙂 Thank you Teoh, for your excellent tutorials
TFS, Teoh! Occasionally I do a quick paint box sketch to swatch my paint colors. It does create some additional interest to my swatch charts! Great pens and inks type info also. 👍🏾🍁
quick guide to sketching with ink & watercolour by Teo Yi Chie. This is an excellent video for me. Although I have painted in watercolour for many years I have never combined it with an ink drawing so the advice on what different pens can do and also on the ink drying time before using paint were brilliant for me. Thank you Teo. It is very much appreciated. Joan Storer. England.
Teoh you’re so cool! You motivate me to jump right in to making art just by sharing your process. I really don’t like overthinking creativity. Thank you for pushing us all forward man.
Most excellent presentation! I wish I had seen this before I spent so much energy and money trying to learn all of this on my own. Thank you. I look forward to more of your videos.
I really can’t stress enough the importance of testing pens for watercolor because there are some pens that say waterproof but sometimes blot or spread when water is applied, sometimes it’s the paper’s quality,so it really is important to test things and watch reviews.btw thanks for featuring holbein watercolors,it’s one of my favorite brands to use.
I just treated myself to my first bottle of ink and dip pens. I can't wait to incorporate out into my watercolour painting!! Thanks for this great tutorial.
I loved it! Thank you very much for this video. I've been feeling burnout and I decided to start experimenting with watercolors. This helps very much! Thank you once again.
Really enjoyed this guide, Teoh. Its quite comprehensive, and for a beginner like me, the way you combine quite technical information with enthusiasm for the fun and creative process of sketching is just wonderful. You are by far my favourite channel.
Great video and most informative and interesting information so thank you very much for sharing your videos with us also you are great you tube channel and keep your videos coming.
Your content is always of such incredibly excellent quality. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and for your hardwork! May you be blessed and happy everyday!
Hello Teoh. I'm a beginner in pen and ink and I recently got interested in adding watercolor to my sketches. This quick guide was very helpful. Thank you. PS I love your ink and watercolor sketches.
Another great video, thanks! However, as I am never one to refrain from critical commentary, I would love it if you were able to describe how you set up & work when you are doing Urban sketching. I am in New York, and it seems like space is a questionable Prospect for most of my Urban sketching, so I've taken to using water brushes which are frankly very unsatisfying in terms of the quality achievable with them. I see your sketching walk videos and I see some of your compatriots with what looks like an entire artist studio spread out on their laps, where I'm just trying to juggle a small thumb-ring palette, a moderately- sized Sketchbook and a water-brush! I'd love to see your insight into space organization on one's lap, whether anyone uses a lap desk or not, two handed art supply manipulation (kind of like a lesson in brain surgery, y'know?), where the paper towels or rags go when you're done with them, whether or not you're carrying a suitcase size carrier for all this stuff, that sort of thing. Some of us are deep into this not just beginners, and I would love to get some insight from you and maybe some of your co-urban- sketch colleagues about how they "juggle." Thanks!
If you bring too many things, it's going to be heavy and tiring to carry them around. I just have a small portable stool, my sketchbook and watercolour box. The sketchbook is placed on my lap and the watercolour box is on the ground. You can see me in action in this video ruclips.net/video/-7U9dH1sTRA/видео.html
Great video. Alot of good advice and great recommendations. I am new to your channel. I tend to mix my watercolor pencils with my watercolor paints. It's fun and sometimes handy in case I do not have the exact color that I need.
Oh hell i was finding material for my essay and I stumbled on this video. I was utterly shocked when your sketchbook is full of Vietnam's scenery. Welcome to Vietnam bruh XDDD
And when your “disposable” Micron/Pitts tech pens go dry, you can just pull the nib out and refill them with your waterproof carbon/India Inks and they’ll keep on going :)
Thank you for this. I like that water colour set you have there. I have a tin set that has two flaps or mixing space (not sure what it is called) and I tend to only use one of it. And I find the other one a bit troublesome.
Thank you, that was very helpful. Only one problem: I could t hear any birds in the background! J Your tutorials are so informative, and I find your voice very relaxing. Thanks for all you do.
To many choices. Mechanical lead holder with 4B graphite, lead sanding block, Pigma Micron .1 waterproof pen, Arches hot press block watercolor paper, Winsor/Newton Cotman water color paint ( Alizarin crimson, Cad yellow light, French ultra marine blue, Burnt umber, White, small tubes), white vinyl eraser. Now just do it. A lot.
Hi, Theo, thanks for this great channel, I see you have the canson watercolor paper, have you reviewed yet? I don’t seem to find reviews, I’m thinking on buying a block, but don’t know yet, they have available the large and medium blocks. Would you recommend it?
It’s average watercolor paper. The video review has yet to be published. You can check out the text review at www.parkablogs.com/content/review-canson-xl-watercolour-paper-300gsm
What about using flat brushes of 1/4 inch to 1 inch...? Are there flat brushes for watercolor and will they help with control over edges and big areas...? Will these be recommended for beginners.?
Flat brushes are good for covering large areas, bold and straight strokes. I prefer squirrel brushes because I find them more flexible for general use and they can cover large areas too.
What the heck you mind reader, I JUST decided to start looking into buying better watercolor this weekend! 😂 Also the pilot high tec C pens in my opinion only seem waterproof after a few hours. What is your experience? They aren't waterproof in time for my location sketching class, but my pentel pocket dries instantly!
Hi Teoh. I quite enjoy using inks like watercolours, but finding suitable brushes to use with ink has been hit and miss. Do you think I should use normal watercolour brushes or different ones?
I didn't know the Arches was expensive, I got my first A5 300grm coldpress Arches for like 10 US dollars (8 European euros or so). Maybe it's just me living in the Netherlands :'D
A wonderful intro video! All of your videos are very good; I am enjoying them and learning a lot! In your discussion of artist v student-grade watercolors, I'm surprised you don't mention colorfastness. I've been given to understand this is a very important feature of watercolors. For example, if you are creating art to sell/display (as opposed to just sketching in your sketchbooks), you want to be sure to use watercolors that are colorfast, so that colors don't change or fade over time. What do you think? Do you think these differences are sometimes overrated?
It's best to get lightfast colours that last. But I don't have the capability to test all the colours I use, so I have to rely on the manufacturer labels. Commonly used colours and pigment have lots of information on lightfast quality. So I tend to use those
Hello am a new fun of yours, sorry for having find only now your interesting tutorials, just wanted to ask you a q: do you think I can buy all these pens on-line ? Thanks 4 your kind attention..

Hello, ive been using winsor and newton for 2 years now and i feel like an upgrade. Id love some Schminke but sadly its too expensive for me. Do you think White Nights is a good upgrade from Cotmans?
I started with W&N Cotman and moved to White Nights and I very quickly gave my Cotman set away. White Nights, for the price, opened the door to water colour for me. Good luck!!
You can get a mister. Those small plastic bottles that can spray a mist. I usually don't use them. I would use the watercolour brush to put droplets of water into colours I'm going to use. One less item to bring around outdoors.
Can someone please advise me on reasonable watercolour sketchbooks with white smooth stitched paper about A4 / A5 with elasticated closer. Regards- Andy D
You have to look for waterproof inks that mention specifically that they are safe for use in fountain pens. But even so, it's good to clean out the pens once in a while, and definitely clean the pen if you are not going to be using them for long period of time. Thanks for showing all the brand names close up! Most artists don't seem to do this and fly by so fast it can be disappointing. You're the best😊

Hi Teoh. I quite enjoy using inks like watercolours, but finding suitable brushes to use with ink has been hit and miss. Do you think I should use normal watercolour brushes or different ones?
Will the paint be more durable in the tube than squeezing into the pan? Im using mission gold.
Paint will be easier to work with in tube. Mission Gold work better in tubes because they don't dry fast in pan
