I did four washes before a good one. The relaxed wash does not soak the paper as much, allowing for more water. Remember to leave white areas, everybody!
Very strange coincidence today. I watched this video in the morning. Completely new to me. Then went to what was basically an estate sale an hour after watching and found a foil print of this castle. The owner let me take it for free. I don't think it is worth anything but I couldn't not take it, especially for free. I just find the odds really strange so I had to let everyone know.
I can't wait to try this technique. Actually, it combines several techniques, giving the watercolorist many options. Thank You! We all need challenges to grow as artists.
Having painting as a hobby from my childhood, I have been come across many paintings and painting style. And after the birth of RUclips , I started enjoying learning painting through good tutorial videos here. But this is a wonderful video, which introduced a wonderful and different technique to me, actually which I never came across and studied all these years. Simple and lucid teaching. Thank you.
Don't get me started....this is the beginning of that famous wet-in-wet watercolour technique that everyone loves...this is how I start many of my watercolours...For one thing. Here are several tips: You can also use a hair dryer to dry it within minutes instead of waiting overnight. There are dozens of textural effects you can achieve by playing with wet in wet (applying wet paint to still freshly applied paint), wet on dry or dry brush effect on dry paper. If you drop wet paint into an area that is already wet with a different colour you can also let the two colours blend. You can poke at the wet paper at various stages of wetness with different things to make different types of marks etc. You can sprinkle the wet paint just before it looses that shiny wetness with small amounts of things like fine salt or coarse salt or fine sand or coarse sand or rubbing alcohol. You an vary the effect by dropping the second colour into the first at varying stages of dryness of the first colour. To force the combination colours to blend different ways try tilting your paper to allow the two colours to mingle in different ways while everything is still very wet. Try applying plain water to the paper then with the tip of your brush drop in some very thick paint...different colours react differently. Some implode, some explode, some explode slowly others much faster.... While the paper is still damp, not completely dry, but just about to lose that shiny wetness you can also texture it by damaging the paper surface with the tip of the brush handle or your finger nail or twine of a fork or even a thumb print if you press it hard enough, or anything hard. These are just a few watercolour techniques that can be played with.
Sorry about the rant above...Teoh, you touched a nerve in me...I have a passion for watercolours and oils...just HAD to share what I know...there now that I said it...hope you experiment with watercolours and use some watercolour blending effects in your sketchbook. There are other techniques where less water is used and a more controlled blending is achieved. But the wet in wet is the most "free" and yields the most delightful effects! Hope you enjoy it!
I just finished my first flawed sketch and wash, but working with new real brush markers oversaturated fast even tough to thin down! I will watch out with them more next sketch. Beautiful sketchbook, the backgrounds appeal to my style right now. Good demo.
Oh - what brush did you use to apply your color? Your brush seemed to have the perfect ratio of water to paint. Could you also add water first then paint over the water? Or would that make the paint too transparent?
The brush I used is the Nevskaya Palitra brush. It's a sable brush. Other brands will perform similarly. I did not use too much water so as not to make the surface too wet. Yes, you can wet the paper first. It will create a softer look and none of the hard edges. ruclips.net/video/bnzbJ8ws2U0/видео.html
Love seeing your work; today I am enjoying the artist who does splashes before inking. This practice really looks like a fun mystery of how the painting is going to unfold. I am going to try it !!
You've given me some great ideas. Ordered myself a Windsor 45 half pan. Going to travel around my city and gardens and use the techniques you have demonstrated. I'll keep watching your videos .
Hi Teoh! I like this technique very much! I have watched this video various times, and will be trying it soon. My favorite painting is the lighter one because of the awesome shadow contrasts. My favorite part of that painting is the back tower to the right. The contrast there is wonderful, and really makes it appear to be cast in strong sunlight against shadow. Very nice! 😊💐 P.S. Please let me know if that book is ever back in print. It looks amazing! I will check out Book 2.
Love this technique and found a painting I wanted to work on but couldn’t figure out how they did they background and you did a beautiful job of showing me how it is done. Thank you!!!!
Teoh, that was great! Shadows on the right of castle are very interesting. I like the technique with urban/grit scenes because the accidental quality reinforces the subject. You set a great example as an active, always questing artist. We wait to see what you try next!
The shadows are indeed quite interesting. It actually turned out better than I expected with the initial wash beneath. There won't be many videos soon as I'm preparing for my trip to the Urban Sketchers Symposium from 26-31 July. Hopefully, I can get high speed internet access so I can upload videos from UK.
+Teoh. In London? Lucky you. Best time of the year to visit. Take some pictures for future sketches. L'don has great architecture and the young are friendly.
The symposium is in Manchester. After that I'm traveling to a few places and then finally to London for a few days. It's actually still considered quite cold to me. LOL
I actually a beginner with her background splash/wash,backruns and all. I just got more Prima paint boxes and 3 SBV brushes for my birthday. Great video!
Thank you so much. I can't believe you did this technique. I have been thinking about learning it and was going to try to experiment. I love both pieces you did. Almost like the castle is in different seasons.
It's quite fun. Actually, the video showed my second time trying it. The first time was the purple sketch. I thought wasn't as good because I did not quite capture the contrast because of the darker wash.
Great video again, Teoh!! I can't wait to give this a try! Do you choose your background color with a certain intention or is it more of a random choice? Looks so awesome!! Thank you!
I think you should splash on damp paper and let the colors spread naturally. spreading with your brush is no better than just painting and does not quite give a random effect. I enjoy all your videos. It appears you had a great time in England.
Hi Teoh! I'm a big fan!! Congrats on 100K followers. I was wondering if Tia Boon Sim herself has done any tutorials on this style and her process. I LOVED watching you recreate it - and I tried my own last night and LOVED the result. I'd love to see Tia explain the whole process she does too. Do you know of any videos online? I searched a bit and couldn't find much. Do many urban sketch artists use this technique? Thanks for all your videos. I REALLY loved this one.
I hope i can become more free, loose and quick with watercolors. I'm a pencil drawing chick so i'm used to taking my time and focusing on structure and detail. So watercolor is like the opposite of what i've trained myself to do 😅 but i like it so much and since i'm only 25 it should be easy to change things up. Thanks for the tips, sir ☺️
i m really keen to take up drawing and watching your video especial urban sketching is so motivating. i have got all my sketch books and pens but yet to start. i am a real beginners. ..never did any real drawings in the past
Interesting. I thought the orange colour was wrong and was thinking I’d do it in blue grey. Surprise you did and I prefer the orange even though the photo was stone and shadow. Painting love the surprises. Have to try that some time 👍
Great technique to overcome fear of the blank paper. Thank you for addressing the distortion in photo references
I always wonder about people's techniques. Thank you for sharing this. I got so excited once I realised what it was.
Thanks :-)
I love the layers this seems to add to the sketch. I'm looking forward to trying it. Thanks for the tutorial and inspiration!
Teo you are one of the best artist on RUclips, I enjoy watching your videos. Have got got a lot of good ideas from you.
+Gary McGuire Thanks 😀

Thanks! I tried and like the results. As a beginner, it helps to learn to loosen up and play.
This is a really cool sketch you've done Teoh. It looks great. Can't wait to try the technique for myself. 🙂🎨
Thanks! :-) It's an easy technique to try. Just don't make the initial wash too dark since it's just supposed to be a background wash.
Having painting as a hobby from my childhood, I have been come across many paintings and painting style. +kishor vivian Thanks for your comment. 😊
I love this technique! it adds so much charm and beauty. You are easy to follow & understand, a very good presenter. I've subscribed :)
Thank you :-)
Trish S. wondeŕfuĺ,maybe I canget back to sketching again. you video is inspiring. thank yoù.

Glad to hear!
👌
I'm always mesmerized by the way you sketch and also the way you explain the processes behind your work. Glad to be a new subscriber!
+Jewel Jes Thanks for your support 😁
Definitely gonna try this! Thanks, Mr. Teoh!
that looks like Dunrobin castle in Scotland...I've got my own reference photos ! so I will try this technique..thanks for your video
I just finished my first flawed sketch and wash, but working with new real brush markers oversaturated fast even tough to thin down! I will watch out with them more next sketch. Beautiful sketchbook, the backgrounds appeal to my style right now. Good demo.

They're alot of technique's that can be combined with this one. Thank's for sharing this really is relaxing and this is one of the simplest one to do.
Awesome technique! I am intrigued and quite anxious to give it a try... thanks for sharing this! cheers! :)
Didn’t think I would tune in and see Dunrobin Castle in Scotland
Nice demonstration
What a wonderful video! Great tutorial, beautiful sketching and such vibrant colour choices and skilful execution.
This was really good!! Thanks so much for sharing your techniques and insights - it means a lot to us beginners!
Wow, so pretty! I will try that tonight. Thank you for the video
Love the splatter technique!!! I favor the orange castle. Thank you for your wonderful tutorial!!!

Wonderful demonstration encouraging to hold brush & start painting right away. Thank you from India for sharing the technique.
love to watch your process.. You are bold with color and loose with your sketches. You are very talented!
Thanks :-)

+Crystal Korzep It's seems the colour does not matter as much
These both came out very well for you. It’s another good technique to have in our watercolor endeavors. Thank you!!
You make it look so simple!
Great video!
This technique would be great using ink first, like the inktense palette, as you then wouldn't need to worry about reactivating the wash :)
This is really cool. Definitely gonna try this technique on my trip to Dallas this weekend.
Thanks for your vivid videos which help us sketchers to make things easy!
Teoh, thank you for these videos! I am loving them and learning so much. You are fun to watch!
+Shelly Foss Thanks 😁🙌
Interesting technique. Thanks, Teoh.
Thanks ~(˘▾˘~)
Those are quite beautiful! Great technique.
It's quite fun. Actually, the video showed my second time trying it. The first time was the purple sketch. I thought wasn't as good because I did not quite capture the contrast because of the darker wash.
You certainly did a great job with these. Lots of contrast and fun to look at.
Great video they both look great. Thanks for sharing this technique !!
Good tutorial. Nicely explained. Thank you.😊
Thank u very very much.
A simple but very helpful tutorial...

Great video again, Teoh!! I can't wait to give this a try! Do you choose your background color with a certain intention or is it more of a random choice? Looks so awesome!! Thank you!
It's just a random choice.
This was really cool. Will definitely try
This is a really nice technique, I might try it later 😸👍 thank you for sharing
Great tutorial ! that's something I want to try soon ! It add some energy to the drawing

Thank you Teoh!! your tutorial is soo awesome and im gonna try to do this style! i love it so much.
I found this a very different technique and I will enjoy trying it. Mary
Thanks for teaching us about water splashing. Learned a lot. Thanks so much...
I think you should splash on damp paper and let the colors spread naturally. spreading with your brush is no better than just painting and does not quite give a random effect. I enjoy all your videos. It appears you had a great time in England.
Thanks for the tip. I'm trying to use that technique more.
This technique is super! I hope you'll do it again with some other examples.
Thank you so much. Im just a beginner and I was wondering how can I fill out large spaces with colours but this technique is really cool.
I fibbed, this was the video that I watched first, then the Manchester ones. Regardless they are all wonderful, thanks again!
Big Hugs!!
Reeah.
this tecnique works well when painting flowers.
Oooh that's a great idea! I was mostly just thinking about urban sketching but yeah, that'd be gorgeous!

+IKA's ScratchBuilt RC Thank you 😊
Thank you for sharing your talents!
fun technique! I think the randomness of the first step would force me to loosen my painting up. im going to try it😀

+AssaultedPeanutt Try all sorts of medium to switch things up once in a while.
I think I preferred the blue splashes, the red splashes reminded me of blood spatter :)
Such a cool way to create a sketch! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you ヾ(⌐■_■)ノ♪
i m really keen to take up drawing and watching your video especial urban sketching is so motivating. i have got all my sketch books and pens but yet to start. i am a real beginners. ..never did any real drawings in the past
