It's great to see you are getting more popular. Thank you for making so many useful videos. I really appreciate the frequency of your videos, as well as the variety of interesting topics you explore.
Yeah, I notice the popular on deviantart girls tend to be very snarky and negative... Except for some super cool people. I'm learning a lot watching him.
This was incredibly helpful to me! Your explanation on 'perspective' gets 5 Gold stars!!!! The heads all lining up with the 'eye level line' is what really made things click for me! You're not only a talented artist...but a gifted teacher. Sincerely, thank you! :)
thank you so very much teoh for this beautiful tutorial on perspective and sketching people. You are a very good art teacher and I am so very thankful.
this was very helpful. so fun so get back to basics Id forgotten about over the years. the simple proportion and eye level reminders will come in so handy. cant wait to try it out!
I am just beginning to do figure drawing. I took my first class about two weeks ago. However I am very slow and can never seem to get far on my sketch. I usually do buildings and places, and took the class so I could add people. I didn't know about eye level. So that was VERY helpful. I also have never drawn people so simply. I think you're spot on with keeping them simple so the rest of the drawing is the focus. Thank you for posting.
I’ve only just started getting into urban sketching and this was such a helpful video! Will definitely be checking out your other videos. Many thanks from Saudi Arabia!
Thank you for this lesson!! it is SCARY putting little people in paintings. Immediatly I think "portrait", and then decide to leave them out. But, the addition of even a suggestion of people adds great life to the work. I"ll try hard to add people from now on, based on your teachings here.
Such a great yet simple way of teaching a concept that is sometimes so abstract. This video alone made me subscribe to your channel. Now, I won't miss every new one!
Thank you Theo for your wonderful videos, full of tips and great lessons! So useful, it's a great support and help in learning drawing and sketching. Thank you !!!!
Where were you all this time, Teoh Yi Chie? I have been struggling for so long to do good sketches and you have helped me so much watching your videos this afternoon. So glad I have found your great channel. Many thanks! Anne
thank you for this video. im glad i decided to click and watch this. i've always struggle with horizon line and with this video i've learned a lot about where my horizon line should be.
Wow!! Awesome tips!! Now I know what's wrong with my people...proportions!! I am going to practice this, and then try to put them into my paintings. Thank you so much for sharing this! Love your videos!!
Hello, I'm really enjoying your videos. You're so talented and very informative. I may be going to my first urban sketchers meet up this week, here in Seattle and I was wondering if you could do a video on what supplies you take with you to sketch and paint and perhaps what bag you use to carry them. I've gone sketching before on my own and usually just bring my book, watercolor palette and pencil case but curious as to what you bring when you go out?
You can just bring whatever that is comfortable for you to carry. In addition to drawing materials, I like to bring a portable stool so that I can sit anywhere, and a hat in case it is too sunny. I've created a video of my sketching kit that you can watch at ruclips.net/video/cQyANbDSx_0/видео.html
Please can you share how to convert handmade illustration into a digital version using a simple app.....please share the video link if you made a video on this.
Great video as usual Teoh. I'm really impressed by your pictures and how you make the most difficult of subjects appear easy to capture. This video has reminded me that detail is not always necessary. Can you tell what pen and ink you are using in this video please?
Hei Teoh. I really enjoy your videos and this video is really great. I know this was posted a looong time ago but I was wondering about the mall drawing at 12:07 iwhere you point out some mistakes in perspective. Could you maybe do a video where you drew this drawing and other with those mistakes again on camera (just as the originals- but this time correcting the mistakes while showing and explaining? I hope you will consider this idea and that you see this comment even though it’s in such an old video:)
@Teoh Yi Chie, sorry to go off-topic but what OS are you running on your computer, in the background at 0:04 ? Do you use any particular software application to add texts and balloons into a watercoloured picture or graphic novel? Are there any such things?
+Lucky Oswald I'm using Mac OS. As for software to draw text boxes and balloons, you can use Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator but those are paid versions. There's also Affinity Photo and Designer which are cheaper.
Your mall scene at 12:02...it looks like you drew it while sitting down, so your eye level would've been at belly level to those standing, so vanishing point would not necessarily be at their eye level, but at their belly level.
Can you tell us how to indicate that a person is female? Or how to show them in a few simple poses or gestures? Thank you so much! Your videos are among the best I've seen.
+Buttercup Maybe I'll create a video for that in the future. Just some quick tips, female figures (from the front) usually have hips that are wider than the side of the shoulders blades.
Theo, I love your videos, they are GREAT, very detail, your information is very helpful, and your art is amazing, I look forward to watch all your videos and all the ones to come in the future. what pen did you used to draw in this video? and what pen do you recommend for a beginner sketcher like me. I want a good quality one but not too expensive. thanks a lot
+Angela Daly The pen in the video is a Sailor pen with Zoom nib. I used that because the lines are thick and will show up better in video. There's a video review for the pen at ruclips.net/video/9VwKqOiJkgU/видео.html For beginners, I recommend getting a Lamy Safari fountain pen (and ink converter sold separately). If you have more budget, try the Duke 209 with bent nib. For ink, I would recommend Noodler's Black, Platinum Carbon or Sailor Kiwa Guro. Reviews are all below. ruclips.net/video/sLqm8TxMjjc/видео.html ruclips.net/video/rJdDNvYa8_g/видео.html ruclips.net/video/GuvPEOFdU-Y/видео.html
+RocknRoll13ZH Currently, I'm using Noodlers Bulletproof Black Ink. It's waterproof but quality can vary depending on the paper. Check out this review at www.parkablogs.com/content/review-noodlers-black-bulletproof-ink
Hey Teoh. Really helpful tutorial. One dumb question: Can you show me how to draw little people that look like women? Most of the examples you made look like guys wearing t-shirts and pants. how would I draw say a lady wearing pants or a dress? Thanks!
But if you were sitting down while drawing your “mistake” sketches, I think that would account for the different eye levels you are pointing out. Is that right? I am often sitting when I draw scenes like these.
Thank you for sharing. What kind of ink are you using? India ink in a fountain pen? Doesn't it clog your pen? How do you clean it out? I use a drafting pen with India ink that is not supposed to clog but it still clogs and I have to clean it our once a week...which is a painful procedure.
+Bestbrushstroke I use Noodlers Bulletproof ink in my fountain pens. For drafting pens, perhaps you can try Rotring ink. Anyway, those pens do require cleaning occasionally.
Check out "Mastering Watercolors: A Practical Guide" www.parkablogs.com/content/book-review-mastering-watercolors-practical-guide I've many books reviewed at www.parkablogs.com/tags/watercolour-instructional-books
For disposable pens, try Uniball Signo product lines, or Uniball Air. For fountain pens, use Noodlers Bulletproof Black Ink, Sailor KiwaGuro, De Atramentis. As for pencils, if they are not watersoluble pencils, they will be waterproof.
After you are more comfortable with sketching outdoors, you probably would be used to people looking, unless it's the staring intently behind the shoulder type of person. 😂
It's great to see you are getting more popular. Thank you for making so many useful videos. I really appreciate the frequency of your videos, as well as the variety of interesting topics you explore.

How do I go out an sketch people and places without drawing attention to myself and being interrupted?
