We're Going Racing With the AMX!.... At Joe's Speedway! Wait, we're doing WHAT!?

- Our 1979 AMC AMX is already semi popular and possibly even a little notorious online as it is, having come back to life after years in a southern Ohio yard. Now with tens of thousands of miles under it's belt since the rebuild, 3 consecutive Hot Rod Power Tour Long Hauls and more than a little hooning from the folks at The Old Man's Garage / Street Racing Channel, it's time to give this little thing a whole new test. Let's go racing!
Now most people would thing, ok you're going racing in a rear wheel drive, stick shift, V8 sports car, you're definitely going drag racing. Or maybe road racing. What almost no one would imagine we would be doing is going to Joe's Speedway in Adena for an SCCA OVR Rally Cross event! No, not AutoCross where you are running your nice machine through a course set up with traffic cones, this is the off road version, in the dirt and rocks! CAN our 79 AMX handle this kind of abuse? Can it make it through the full event in one piece?
Huge thank you to every person who helped put on this event, having never been to a RallyX event before I really didn't know what to expect but everyone was fantastic! I had a great time doing something I had never done before and would absolutely come back for more. Though, maybe next time, in something a bit more designed for crazy offroad punishment! Maybe we need a rally car AMX? - Авто/Мото
Dang should of called me. Stunt driver ready... 😂
Lol there MAY be another event coming up that we might try... 😉
@@LucoreAuto you know I'm down..😉 let's goooooo
Glad you came out to join us! And thanks for the great video, it was long and dusty weekend but as always, well worth it!
I had a great time definitely a fun way to spend a weekend day. Even with the out and back drive time still a ton of fun. I wasn't even remotely competitive but now I KNOW what to expect for next time 😉
Looks like shenanigans ahead for Austin, go for it!😉
Ohhhh Shenanigans for SURE!
I am glad you enjoyed it.
Ohhhhh it was an experience for sure!
It is very apparent you had a blast out there! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great way to spend a beautiful weekend day for sure!
Hey Austin. Looks like you sure had fun for your 1st RallyX. On behalf of OVR, we are glad that you were able to join us and also post about it here. My husband and I were in the red Subie WRX (Franken WRX). It was awesome to see your video where I was on course. I ran as 95 MA. The co-chair, Orion, drove our car on Sunday since his car was broke. My husband was the one who had car trouble and stopped on course. He said the shifter handle ball end slipped out and he didn't know which gear he was in. He will be fixing that before the next event.
Hopefully you can make it to another OVR RallyX event or even try out AutoX with us at The Fortress at Obetz.
Take care.
the suspension rebound slows it down, you need a suspension that will make the car, after a jump, stay with the suspension compressed quickly and return to its normal height, very, very slowly.
Some double adjustable qa1's in the front would be awesome in that car for this.
With that track, I'd Image you're gonna be lucky to get past 2nd gear tops... And the one Subaru in the hunt puts down a lick... Go Austin... At least you had some fun...
Lol getting INTO second gear was a trick to be honest I ran almost the entire track every lap in first and barely cracked 3000rpms! Certainly a weeeee bit out of our element mechanically but still fun!
Me and my friends used to do this type of racing up in the hills outside a little town named Sandy Oregon,.
Had a blast.
As a "sanctioned race" or just good ole boys having some fun?
@@LucoreAuto good ol boys havin a ton of fun.
Too much fun! Please do more of these type of videos! Maybe try auto-x or track day next?
Need to make some adjustments to really improve turning radius in order to get some AutoX done but that's in the cards. Track day.... will be coming soon(ish)! 😉
Kenny took it off road once
Not quite THIS offroad! 😉
HOWdy Lucore, ...
Thanks for taking US along
CHANGE yer Air FILTER !!!
COOP
the WiSeNhEiMeR from Richmond, INDIANA
...
Little bit of post Race maintenance to do after this for sure! 😉
If you've still got that brown MK2 Capri, you should turn it into an autocross racer.
Stiffen up the suspension, strip the interior and away you go
100% agree. I was thinking the exact same thing while watching the video.
having some fun what its all about
Exactly! Doing what we preach in the Church of Bad Decisions!
Hello Austin.
Hello there!
This is like the tee I bought. Church of Bad Choices Austin. Hope the car will hold up. Get dirty 😅 At Joe’s.
DEFINITELY got dirty at Joe's! This was for sure a Bad Decision but.... turned out pretty dang well!
Stand on it!!!!!
Lol! Give it full beans!
Good luck
We came, we saw, we made it back!
It looks so fun! I'd like to try and race my brat
Had a great time, quite dusty and dirty... a bit sore, but very very fun!
I had a 1980 amc spirit 2.5L. They are remarkably durable off road. I had driven mine through many a corn field. I think you could run harder next time! 🇺🇸🙌
What modifications did you make to the suspension?
@@225supersix1977 No modifications. All stock.
I want to see Kenny drive it!😅
We'll see maybe we can offer him a guest seat sometime soon! 😉
You are now a member of the stunt drivers of ‘merica! Get the tee shirt!
Lol there's a shirt for this!? 😀
Very nice. Need an AMX wagon 4x4.
looks like you had a blast, that being said, maybe a 4wd would be a better idea next time, lol. Now give that poor little AMX a bath and fix the clutch, it's certainly earned it :)
Awesome
It certainly was!
I think a Subie WRX would be the hot ticket for this kinda thing.
Yessss for sure! Proper suspension and tires are the key, and a willingness to hoon the life out of the machine. Plans are in motion!
A scooby or similar awd car with the suspension, tires and enough power (you don't need a whole lot to have fun) to get a nice drift going is the business, however in the absence of ALL of the horsepower, the most fun on gravel (or snow and ice for that matter) is a small and/or light rear wheel drive car with all of the windows and doors intact. Kinda like the short arsed beamer and the RX-7 at this event...old Ford Escorts, Capris, rwd Celicas, Toyota Starlets, Mercedes 190Es, hell...do a "Don't need it, delete it" one of the AMXs, do a somewhat ambitious engine swap for a smaller engine (K series, the 2.3, whatever), do some work on the suspension and lo and behold, you'll be sliding around corners revving the everliving crap out of the thing and feeling like a champ...even if you're doing 20mph.
And kudos to @LucoreAuto for doing this, will be interesting to see if you do more of this in the future and where things develop. That kind of place is also very good to get your feet wet without having the hazard of crashing into trees if you make a big enough mistake.
Surprisingly, the answer is Miata. Much lighter, narrower, and with a midrangey turbo they go like stink too
@@RLRSwanson The RX-7 was mine. It is mostly stock aside from Bilstein HDs and coilovers all around. My other RX-7, on the other hand, usually took FTD and first place overall (scoring is cumulative) when we'd hold an event at Joe's, thanks to some suspension work and about 270 little horses 🤣 ruclips.net/video/DemiQ-C4RLQ/видео.html
@@izzmus Oh very cool, love me some RX7...doesn't matter if it's an sa or a fd. As for the MX-5, definitely ticks the boxes of small, lightweight, good weight distribution etc out of the box, cheap and you can play around with the engine (depending on the rules) etc. Conveniently there's also rally suspension kits available for different surfaces, not cheap but if you can get the car at a good price...
Idk if you live in Ohio or not but, Ohio is part of the rust belt! The most important thing is that you pressure wash that AMX & GET ALL THE DIRT & MUD OFF OF IT Or else it will rust it out! You should make a mixture of Bar & chain oil mixed about 50/50 with deisel fuel & coat the entire underside of that AMX B4 ANY OFFROAD ACTIVITY! PREVENTION IS KEY!
Wow, I was there and I had no idea that anything had happened (it was hot, yeah?) but at about 1:01:00 or so you can see the left front control arm folding under and hear the tire grinding on the fender liner. A not uncommon failure with the steel control arms
Shoulda taken Kenny to pilot AMX Austin 😁😁😁 wanna see more now for sure 🤙🤙🤙🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Might have to let him guest drive if we do this again 😉
Kenny would have let to fly.
You need to find an AMC SX/4 for this kind of shenanigans.
Its certainly entered our minds! Had a great time in this thing around the dirt but it's certainly not built for it!
Shit kenny fucking powers sent it at omg
Not QUITE on a track this rowdy but yes he did! 😉
Or even some hydraulic bump stops 😂😂😂
Lol dunno about hydraulic bump stops but need to probably give it a LITTLE extra something if we plan on doing this again!
what u need if u r going to continue with this is a metro 6r4 or similar i think one of the casinos had the only one in the states as a display piece till a few years ago , or if sticking with 70s rear wheel drive get yourself an escort u already have a pinto for it from one of the capris don't u
Got my Fingers crossed the Subaru spanks the BMW hatch...
That red Subaru was a monster for sure but not sure they had more fun than the guys in the 318 BMW!
the pontiak thingamy u took on the 2500-2500 was the car to take to that from what i have seen of urs
Bushings or cable for the clutch??
Volvo with a Volvo v8, lift kit, Suspension, Suspension and tires. = a great recipe for fun. Or Take a amc jeep chas put AMX Spirt Body on it with the V8 WITH A nice little lift and then SEND IT!
Car never done this before, Austin has never done this before. What could possibly go wrong?
Exactly! Also, no spare parts or tools, we are ready! 😉
Goofy...good stuff be safe
Good time for sure, will also totally admit this was a dumb/goofy decision! 😉
Austin look @ the groove on the track church of bad decisions shirt worn
I thought for sure you'd blow out the suspension.
There were a few sketchy moments, I wish I could have had a nose camera to show just how wild that course was. Negative camber bumps on rough packed clay... yikes! But, we made it!
@@LucoreAuto Great job btw
Put Kenny Powers behind the wheel...what could go wrong!? ✌️😁
The clutch...no smell? No slave I assume (domestic '79). All my years in collision shops back to the late 80's tells me maybe your Z bar is mad at rallying. Maybe a bad motor mount of the 3? Thought some or all would be new. Who knows with today's Chinesium parts...although Mark's pretty up on anti-Chinesium parts...hmmm.
Put Kenny powers behind the wheel lol
MURICA!!!!
Yes indeed!
You need an sx4 or an eagle to do this
strip down then exo one of the many cars u have out back of the shop and elsewhere
I can make that neon naturally aspirated and real fast lol
Was a father daughter team hooning it about, never got a peek under the hood but they certainly seemed to be having fun with it 😀
@@LucoreAuto I used to dirt track race neons and there is so many tricks to make those things fast, it's unreal what all you can do without even touching the bottom end or going crazy with the cylinder head
That's my SRT-swapped Neon that I've been running in mod front since about 2011 or so. It's already real fast, taking first in MF and third overall on Sunday. @LucoreAuto There's some truth to what you said about posting good times being about being willing to punish the car but since all runs count, being able to finish the day is also critical. I've spent a lot of my work on the car improving durability so that it can take that kind of abuse - better axles, better motor mounting, securing the exhaust, stronger suspension, and so on. And sometimes how you drive the car changes, too. I was only carrying about 75% of the speed that I would have normally pushed coming in to the turn up the hill on the afternoon course because I was concerned about how rough that section was. But anyway, get that Forester put together and come back out with us!
@@williamehrman nice!!
The Mazda and the mini Cooper what happened to those two
I think that car would easily qualify for 24 Hours of Lemons.. whether or not it could win now that people actually put a lot of money into their piles.. who knows. Front shocks would have to be your first mod if you were to do that often so it didn't just bury the oil pan in the dirt/tires into the fenders on every bump. I'll say that I loved driving my 95 Bronco fast on gravel roads but I wouldn't have gone around that track in it.. Even with only 31's I feel like it would've been too top heavy and just rolled if I took a corner too fast.. (not that I didn't throw it into some corners fast out by the lake on road)
Perhaps instead of rallifying one of the AMXs or the Capri and you need some rear wheel drive Murica, a three door Chevrolet Chevette ticks a lot of the boxes: small, light, rwd, bad decision. Plus as Vauxhalls badged s***boxes they were used a lot as rally cars back in the day...so there's that.
Even worse...better church approved decisions would be the various rwd chryslerbishis from the 70s and 80s.
thats the wrong amc u need an eagle sx4
looks like a place to go to drive drunk legally
