  • This video is a follow-up to my 350Z Manual Swap video. I wanted to show the process I used, as well as for other model years, to wire up the clutch interlock switch in order to get the car to start. I also installed the final interior piece around the shift knob to complete the transformation and answered a few questions regarding the swap. Thanks for watching!

    Hello, kinda late to this but really hope I can get a response, I’ve got a wire hooked up to wire 53, and running that into the cabin, the clutch depress sensor has the two wires ones green and the other grey and red, the grey and red wire is the same color as 53, I have the red and grey wire hooked up to the fuse “put it into the o2 sensor fuse”and the green wire hooked up to 53 coming into the cabin. When I go to start the car it won’t start and has the park up shift light on, my reverse lights are also on, any clue on what I’ve got wrong ?

    Great explanation again! Thanks for the help from part 1 as well. But I was thinking:
    By reading this video's comments and a little research, if I am using the 6MT ECU and 6MT harness, I can skip this step and the reverse lights will work?

    • @DillonSmith1
      @DillonSmith1  4 года назад +1

      From the research I've done, yes I think you're right. The 6MT harness should have all connections to the the transmission, which includes the reverse position switch (the thing that signals the IPDM to turn on the reverse lights). This should also keep your cruise control active if you have it, which is only allowed if the neutral position switch is wired. Given the point of my build, I didn't need either of these options.

    Dillon, thank you so much for sharing this detailed video! I have a 2004 350z, can I still do the swap without changing out the harness and ECU? I'm assuming you have a 2006 350z. So it works the same for the 2004 and 2006 model, everything except the clutch pedal?

    • @DillonSmith1
      @DillonSmith1  4 года назад +1

      Hey, thanks for the kind words. You're right, the swap should be exactly the same for your 2004 apart from the clutch interlock switch wiring. I will say that a lot of people (but not all) are getting a code if they stick to original harness and ECU due to the TCM being disconnected. Do with that what you will, but it wasn't an issue for me since I already have codes for lack of EVAP system, cats, etc... For what it's worth, mine didn't trigger the U1000 (TCM non-communication) code.

    • @DillonSmith1

    • @DillonSmith1
      @DillonSmith1  4 года назад

    • @DillonSmith1
      @DillonSmith1  4 года назад

      I can't imagine why it wouldn't be. The wiring harness changed for the '04.5 model year, so yours should definitely be the same as mine. I would recommend running a jumper wire from a 12v source to the #53 wire and seeing if it starts before doing any cutting/splicing. I always like to test my wiring, if possible, before doing anything permanent just to minimize the workload. Wiring is my least favorite part of any job.

    Hey bud, i have a G35 that was swapped to a 6 speed and the clutch pedal feels really loose as it is disengadged. Is that normal or is there a way to rebuild or fix that?

    • @DillonSmith1
      @DillonSmith1  4 года назад

      That's a tough one to answer with limited information. When you say it feels loose as it's disengaged, is the play in side-to-side motion? Do you know if any extra reinforcement was added to the clutch pedal mount, or did they just leave it with only the two bolts from the master cylinder? The firewall is made of pretty thin metal so it has a tendency to flex a bit if that's the only mounting surface. If the play is in the in/out direction, I would start looking into the pedal linkage or maybe the previous owner of the clutch pedal removed the assist spring (pretty common mod in G's and Z's).

    • @DillonSmith1

      You can manually spin the input shaft (or with a large drill) in each gear to check for any unusual feelings while watching to see if the output end is rotating. Aside from cracking the thing open that's pretty much all I'd do. If you buy from a salvage yard or shop, you can usually get a 30 day warranty or something like that.

    • @DillonSmith1
      @DillonSmith1  4 года назад

      I've heard that the HR cars have been more difficult with the codes, but the fundamentals should be the same. It sounds like neither your reverse position switch or neutral position switches (both on the transmission body) are hooked up to anything. So if the harness swap didn't give you the plugs for those two sensors, then yes you'll need to wire them.
      You can find wiring diagrams in the FSM links in the description, and those will tell you which pins on the auto connector to run to the switches.

      Hey, glad you like the videos! To answer your first question, no I didn't have to do anything to the ECU when swapping to manual. Once I wired up the clutch safety switch, it starts up and runs perfectly. I can't speak for everyone that has done this swap, but for me it works perfectly. As for the track use question, that's a whole other topic that won't fit in a RUclips comment, haha. There are plenty of forum threads that have served me well on track prep. And if it helps, I'm in the process of getting my Z set up for track use too, so stay tuned for more videos on that soon. I'm editing one right now, in fact.

    Even figure out how to wire up NPSS for cruise control to work, and also the reverse lights to work?

    • @DillonSmith1
      @DillonSmith1  4 года назад +1

      You can find the pinout for the transmission harness connector in the FSM and wire the neutral and reverse switches accordingly to get them working. I didn't bother since I didn't need them, but I may post a video in the near future detailing at least the reverse lights wiring since I've decided to register the car and will need reverse lights.

      Dillon Smith from what I’ve read on forums, the reverse lights just need to be extended with extra wire since the AT harness has a reverse connector already on it that plugs into MT reverse sensor. Not sure about the cruise control. I heard it was pin 102 on the ecu that you can splice into and have that work as well. Can you confirm or add to this? I would think that these wires would indeed be on the AT main connector and could splice into those instead of having to run it to the front of the car and mess with the ecu?!

      I didn't bother wiring mine, since it's just a track car. But there are links to the FSM's in the description that have wiring diagrams. It should be a pretty simple jumper wire to get the reverse lights working.

    Can I swap transmisión 2003?

    • @DillonSmith1

      No, the HR Z's use a different transmission, so you'll need one from a 2007 or newer.

      I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure the years align pretty well with the 350z. The process will be the same, but the TCM wire is what I'm not sure on. If you can find the service manual for your year G35, you can be sure before you splice.

      I had it that way to begin with. I let people drive this car and I don't want the liability of having someone try and start it without the clutch fully engaged while in gear.

    • @DillonSmith1

      The speedometer uses speed sensors on the differential, not the transmission. I didn't have to do anything to get the speedometer to work.

    Can you do one on how to wire up the reverse lights?

    • @DillonSmith1
      @DillonSmith1  4 года назад +4

      Originally I had no plans to mess with reverse lights, given that it's life will mostly be spent at the track. Now that we all have too much time on our hands, thanks to COVID-19, I might actually get bored enough to play around with reverse lights. I'd say stay tuned, but I can't promise anything.

      Please show this, not all manual swaps are done on race cars and still need to pass vehicle state inspections. Hopefully this swap does not illuminate the check/service engine light
