The truck is solid for sure but a turbo engine just doesn’t hold up well past 150k. I have heard so many stories of people replacing turbos as if it is routine maintenance.
My 2017 EcoboostI changed oil every 5k and replaced turbos every 500 miles, the secret is buying the turbos by the gross, 144 at a time🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 even then I have loved both my 2.7 Ecoboost powered F150’s most reliable and comfortable vehicles I’ve owned in my 61 years.
@@LanceE05 absolutely both my 2.7’s have been bullet proof, that was a little tongue in cheek, all I seem to read is people hating on turbo direct injection engines, but with maintenance and common sense while driving they are wonderful engines.
This is what guys who say v8 is the only thing that can be good say. It’s just made of anecdotal stories. Actual repairs and tracked maintenance says otherwise. Turbos are not blowing up left and right. It’s a myth.
Ford is into the 3rd generation of the 3.5 Ecoboost for 2024. The stated issues have been worked out over previous generations, and this motor is now considered to be very reliable with proper maintenance. Now has 400 HP and 500 pound feet of torque at low RPMs! Not much economy though, gets about the same gas mileage as the less powerful 5.0 Coyote. If you want economy, the 2.7 Ecoboost has a pretty good balance of economy and power.
I have a 2014 3.5 eco Lariat. I bought it with 48,xxxx miles. I’m at 194,xxxx right now. I had a turbo replaced under warranty around 90k. Needed to get the throttle body replaced too. I have the spark plugs changed every 80k miles. Oil changes every 5k without question, full synthetic. The truck runs just as good as the day I bought it. I think it’s a 400,000+ mile truck. I love it. I hope to take it that far. 3.5 ecoboosts are the best towing trucks in the half-ton class.
Lmao… just turbo replaced, like it’s no big deal.😂 my 5.3L was egregiously neglected and its still going at 370k miles. What you will pay in turbos outside of warranty, i can get a new 5.3L engine installed.
@ailous626 spark plugs every 30k miles oil every 5-6k miles and valvoline full synthetic high mileage oil. Just did valve covers at 212000 miles top of engine is clean no tarnish.
Actually in 2017 Ford redesigned the timing setup for the 3.5 ecoboost so the chains are far less likely to wear out as they do in the earlier versions of the motor. They also have updated cam phasers that they put into the 3.5s whenever a concern is present. Turbos theres not much you can do, you got the turbines in there spinning at obo 80k rpm and they're being driven by intensely hot exhaust gas they're going to need to be replaced at some point.
I’m 2k miles away from 200k on my 2012 3.5 eco boost. Keep oil changes on schedule and it will last…still runs as smooth and pulls as hard as it did on day one…
Thank you toplineracer as someone whos buying a f150 and is between the 5.0 and the 3.5 this helps alot knowing that a 3.5 is going to be hassle trying to maintain if i did decide to buy it just for the fact that it is and engine that you need to take really care of it since birth and you not truly knowing if the previous owner/ owners took care of it the odds of resulting in something unfavorable is likely
Long read but real owner review- I bought a 2016 3.5 EB almost two years at 64k miles, this review is pretty spot on, right before I bought it the sunroof was completely replaced under warranty, and now it doesn't open so I just leave it alone lol if theres one thing I'd change about my truck it'd be not getting a sunroof, then about 10 months after i bought it the throttle body gave out on me and left me stranded at 74k so personally I'm going to change the throttle body out every 50k that I have this truck. The 6 speed transmission is pretty solid but i do get some clunky downshifts from 5-4, stepping on a few times usually fixes the shift for a while, just step on it from 5-4 every once in a while and you'll be good. I see some expensive repairs at Ford dealership before I bought it so I'm guessing one of then was the cam phasers because I haven't experienced any issues with mine. Personally, I wouldn't buy an ecoboost if you can't afford the ecoboost repair bill... I do expect to change the turbos at about 150k and I'm completely okay with that, it's a fun and strong truck for towing that has its trade offs but I love mine
Safest buy is 5.0nused market. I like what everyone has said about ecoboost but all my mechanic friends also say is to stay away from the EB motors as they just become so unreliable as milage increases sadly
I bought a 2020 3.5L with 45k miles. 2 years later I now have 114k and it runs great. The start up rattle is the only complaint I have. Tows great. If you change the oil and don’t beat the hell out of it it’s a 300k mile truck easily.
My 2020 6.2 suburban had lifter tick. Sealer changed the engine and on test drive the engine caught fire and the truck burnt up to a crisp. No more GM for me. I test drove the grand wagoner but luckily they did not give me a deal so I ck the expedition max and bought that. It has 3rd gen twin turbo and the problems were fixed after it being out for 12 plus years I think this really matters as far as the most reliable large truck on the market. GM 5.3 and 6.2 are disasters with the lifter ticks that blow up the engine when they fail. Jepp with the hurricane is still untested long run reliability. The ford twin turbo is the best out there of the 3 and I think they have stopped for 2025 the 5.0.
highest towing, super fun to drive a twin turbo truck, gas mileage is great, they are very reliable considering this is the most popular engine sold in the line up and theres hundreds of thousands of high mileage ones like this goin strong. they dont rust. I live in the north and a 2016 like this if it was a dodge or chevy, man it wouldnt even be pretty to look at let alone think of puttin your hard earned money on. These trucks have the highest resale value of american trucks by a long shot for good reasons. I predict in another 10 years people will be seeking these out because the bodies are mint and they are the best looking pickups since the 70s
Im a fair guy. Ive owned 4 ford trucks. But the fact the cab has to be removed to do any significant engine repairs is insane. I wouldn’t invest in an ecoboost. I can have a new 5.3L installed in my suburban for $3,400. Pretty sure you can’t do that with the ecoboost. My current Burb 5.3 has almost 370k on original engine that was neglected. new engine will take it to the million mile marker easy with minimum maintenance. Im leaning towards super duty or 12th gen f150 if i go ford, but its going to be hard for me to not buy another 99-06 Silverado/Sierra. Easy to work on, cheap to repair and just runs.
