  • I've been asked to take a look through the diet + weight loss content on TikTok so many times recently. Social media is full of scams and hearsay and I hope this video's a little reminder to show love to anyone online who might be struggling and point them towards qualified voices: Registered Dietitians and Medical Doctors.
For science-based home and gym workout programmes to build muscle, lose fat, or get athletic, my training + nutrition guides approved by a world-leading nutrition expert behind the British Olympic team are available on www.natachaoceane.com ❤️

In case it helps, Britain’s NHS shares that 2,223 calories is the average estimated energy requirement for a 13 year old girl. This only increases through adolescence (it’s nearly 2,500 calories for 17 y/o girls) and bear in mind that this is assuming an average level of activity which realistically isn’t going to be that much. Growth and development have significant energy requirements and we shouldn’t just take them as assumed ♥️ I hope it helps, love ya 💛

Trainers shouldn’t be giving out individualised nutritional guidance like that sweetie. Your trainer not knowing the remits of what they should be advising on isn’t a good sign to be completely honest, and it’s worrying that it goes against the overwhelmingly common guidance of those who are qualified on this topic (Registered Dietitians) ♥️♥️ I’ll try to make a video for teenagers soon and until then I hope you give your body a little chance to get in the energy it needs so you can be grow and be your best, and if you’re feeling hungry or fatigued then please don’t feel put off from eating by their advice 💛

When it comes to the amount that you should eat, I think it is also incredibly important to take note if you are particularly tall or particularly short, as well as the amount of muscle you have. Which is why it is always a good idea to consult a registered dietician

pro ana tumblr was aware that they were promoting something unhealthy and that it was a community of mentally ill people, tiktok thinks that this is genuinely healthy okay and that these are perfectly healthy things to do and they aren’t disordered habits at all. i’ve been in online eating disorder communities for the past seven years and while there are some “pro” people, we always know that it’s unhealthy and that we’re suffering from a mental illness. this diet culture trend on tiktok is incredibly dangerous for the obvious reasons but also because none of these people are willing to admit that these are disordered eating habits and that this obsession with weight loss and restriction is unhealthy. the fact that this is normalized is next level insane.

Exactly you should be focused on being healthy not how you look. I personally have seen a family member not only only lose a ton of weight but also built muscle and genuinely feel better about themselves because they focused on being healthy and losing weight in a healthy way (while going to the gym of course!) The only time losing weight should be a focus is if it's starting to negatively effect your health (heck I've seen some of my muscular peeps sometimes have to do this cause too much muscle can also negatively effect your health) otherwise using that as the focus leads to crash dieting (which doesn't work, it should be a sustainable healthy lifestyle change.) or having an unhealthy relationship with food.

Guys why wouldn’t I want to be skinny. You see yourself how society treats fat people, you see how the internet treats fat people. It creates toxic positivity around the fact that being fat is ok. It’s all body positivity until you turn off your phone and go to school or the real world where you have no friends and no love life when you try your best to be approachable and even try to make friends. I have lost 30 pounds and I have seen myself how differently fat people get treated differently from skinny people. I could end this off with saying “but all body’s are prefect” but you can believe that all you want it’s just not true.

That's insane! a) it's a horrific experience, b) it screws with your gut bacteria and immune system (my friend is now allergic to dairy and gluten after contracting severe food poisoning in Thailand), c) I think that it's possible that girl is lying about losing 20kg - I've had food poisoning multiple times whilst travelling, and I lost a few kg max, most of which was water weight (the same is true for my previously-mentioned friend, and she was actually hospitalised because the food poisoning was so severe), d) if you're healthy, you gain most of the weight back, and e) most importantly, actively contracting food poisoning to lose weight is bulimia. I hope girls who see that video don't take her advice!

To all people reading this: wanting to lose weight is not a bad thing but do it with lots of precautions. I was overweight and I decided to change my lifestyle, I lost a good amount of weight but never actually weighted myself because I'm scared of becoming obsessed with numbers like I used to in the past. Now my goal is to work out to get STRONGER not necessarily thinner et to eat BETTER not less. In terms of food I didn't change anything, I just made sure I stopped eating when I was not hungry anymore. I'm not a specialist, and I didn't consult anyone, so I decided to lose weight very simply: eating a bit better but keeping the things that I love even if they are high calories and exercising. Yes the results are slow (multiple month) but they are steady. Please be safe 🙏

    Hold on,
the first girl barely eats and she says she isn’t trying to lose weigh, so I imagine the ones who want to lose weight: that would mean they should eat EVEN LESS than her?! That is scary. Social media has so much influence on our life, and sometimes, we don’t even realize it. Even if someone just watches that first video for fun, unconsciously, it will affect his/her’s relationship with food... that’s why I try to watch educational or informative stuff from people who know what they are doing - like Natacha - and avoid watching these types of viral videos that won’t bring anything good to my life...

Yes, they are vulnerable without fully developed reasoning skills, but I think this speaks to a greater problem within the entire culture, not just tictoc. These kids need to be taught healthy coping skills and inter-personal skills and communication. For a while it kept me “skinny” but it got to the point where I started gaining weight... and I was so confused by it.
Turns out...my metabolism was so damaged from all of those years of under-eating and malnourishment. Now I eat close to 2000 most days (sometimes much more) and i’ve never been so lean, fit, and happy. My metabolism is finally coming back and I feel like I truly saved myself from the future damage I was about to put upon myself. This TikTok culture is super upsetting and scary to me because I know how under eating calories truly negativity impacts you and your body. I know those TikToks are really going to impact younger girls negatively like it did for me.
If your reading this PLEASE listen to Natacha!!!!
Thank you again for making this videos... you are an amazing influence and I really hope people start to look up to people like you rather than the individuals who spread the toxic diet culture.

I really do not understand at all. I has been consistency losing 2 pounds a week which is considered healthy weight loss and am at a calorie deceit for my maintenance calories. All the BMR calculators and a lot of social media nutritionists tell me to eat 1,400 calories to lose weight based off the maintenance calories I have and its been working. I am a short 5'3 23 year old women who walks 40 minutes a day. I'm getting frustrated from all the mixed information and do not know what is the truth and what isn't for healthy weight loss. Sure I can get constipated a lot (tmi) but I have not had any other bad side effects. I've lost 15 pounds so far and feel better. I weigh 145 pounds.

I'm 5'2", 132lbs (157cm, 60kg). I can't see why I am wrong thinking that if I eat 2000kcal, I will lose and not with 1200kcal...

This reminds me of one of my middle school classmates. She was overweight and then suddenly at the beginning of the school year she came to school looking SUPER SKINNY. She looked like an entirely different person. We asked her how she did it and she basically ate only yoghurt and fruits for 3 months to get those results. + a lot of running.
And what happened next? When she ditched that extreme died she put all the weight and more back in a matter of months. Why? Because that is not a sustainable diet, you cannot keep that up forever and you will start gaining weight back once u start eating normally
I hope your friend will have a healthy relationship with food eventually. I am rooting for her!

But it’s not sustainable and you’ll learn that REAL quick. Thank you for this video. Social media is scary these days and this is coming from an adult. The one about getting sick to lose weight really irritates me. When I was 19, I had to take prophylactic drugs for a month after being assaulted. Without going into graphic detail, they had some nasty side effects that resulted in me losing at least five pounds. I got down to 103 pounds, which was technically my "goal weight." BUT I could barely eat without feeling sick, had horrible stomach problems the whole month, and had absolutely no energy. It took me MONTHS to get my full strength back. And I still didn't like the way I looked. Plus, once I was healthy, I gained it all back because getting sick isn't a sustainable or healthy way to lose weight.

And they think it will keep their weight down too. If your gonna substain that weight you would need to keep eating the diet you had when you were sick which is barely anything.

People think "oh, if i can lose X weight, i'll look like my favorite Ig model" but they always fail to consider that 5 Lbs is not 5 Lbs. It can be 5 Lbs of fat, water, muscle, or a combination of the 3 and all lead to a different end appearance.
Losing weight by getting sick or crash dieting will absolutely not help you lose 5 Lbs of fat while maintaining the muscles that make your favourite Ig model attractive in the first place.
So naturally, you end up not liking the way you look at your goal weight, and then once you've gained all the weight back, you no longer have the motivation to do it sustainably. Or you think you just need to lose even more and end up anorexic.

So,I was always overweight from my childhood . As I got older I started my periods and they were not regular and I started to gain a lot of weight erratically, I got acne ,developed PCOD and marginal hypothyroidism.
(This was before I started using tiktok)
I was not in a good mental state and always thought WHY ME? I used to compare myself with others a lot and to make the situation worse school was hell. I actually danced pretty well but due to my weight they never even gave me a chance.
    Bottom line I was frustrated.
My mom is kind of like a perfectionist . She was really good at sports in her school days and was always fit, but I was the exact opposite . She became really worried when I reached my highest 82kgs at the end of 2018 . So she got me joined at a gym nearby and made me do yoga with her in the morning . At first it was really difficult for me but gradually I started losing weight and it made me very happy . Finally,at the end of 2019 I lost around 20kg , my periods became quite regular , my acne vanished and I started getting compliments .
I owe it all to my mother.
So now the main thing starts:
I started using tiktok and saw these beautiful girls my age who were very popular. Slowly I started to think that I am still not good enough and I started hating myself, although I worked very hard to lose the weight.
I used to think wow they have everything . They are rich , beautiful , popular and are having way more fun than me . I thought my life has nothing , it's useless . I used to envy them a lot and it was taking a toll on my mental health . But then I decided to use my energy somewhere else in something productive . So I uninstalled tiktok and started to focus on my studies and hobbies .
And as a result I scored 98% in my exams and my drawing improved .
I became happy in my body again and replaced social media apps with more useful ones such as quora and Duolingo. I learned 3 languages and now I know that all these outer things don't matter , what matters is that you know your self worth and use your energy on improving yourself rather than wasting time on social media . Now I don't have any social media except youtube of course .
And the funny thing is that now tiktok is banned in our country😂
Sorry if it was too long I just wanted to share my personal experience . And anyone who thinks that you are not good enough always remember nothing is permanent in this world not even your miseries.
    *I LOVE YOU 💜*
    You are not alone.🤗

And the worst part is that TikTok is promoting all these videos, by actually showing it to their users through for you pages and what not. It’s as if they don’t know a majority of their audience is 13 and under, thats why I stopped using it. It’s like TikTok doesn’t understand ages and will just promote stupid things that, again certain age groups shouldn’t be seeing. The comedy has gotten annoying and it’s overall very toxic and I don’t recommend being on there so often.

    Hi everyone :)
I’m a 13 year old girl, and I just wanted to share a bit of a story about my relationship with food.
Ever since I was very young, around 5-6 years old, I thought I needed to be skinny. I would see girls in the books I read or tv shows I watched either telling themselves they needed to watch what they ate, or having someone else tell them so. Stuff like that was always in the back of my mind growing up, although I didn’t really care what I was eating until I was about 10 years old, I still always attempted to work out or exercise in whatever way I could find that I didn’t think took too much effort. I have a specific memory from when I was about 9 years old of my mom walking in on me attempting to do sit-ups, and when she asked what I was doing I replied “swimsuit season is coming up, I need to get in shape” a funny memory, yet gives you a bit of an idea about how I was influenced. It may not seem like a huge deal, but personally I think a nine year old knowing about ‘swimsuit season’ and being determined to be skinny before then because of influence from things such as social media is a bit alarming. Anyways, moving on, eating didn’t become a huge thing I was mindful of until about 11-12. Around that time I developed an eating disorder. I started counting calories and restricting food, which would quite often lead me to binging later on, which would then make me feel guilty. Often times I would sit on the toilet for long periods of time trying to force myself to, well, get all of the food I just binged out. It’s a bit embarrassing but it is what happened. Late last year, I started hanging out with a group of friends who were very toxic, which I didn’t know at the time. They constantly complained about their weight, how ‘fat’ they were, how out of shape they were, yet did nothing healthy about it, leading me to do the same. In fact, most of our days hanging out (which was almost every other day) were spent drinking extra large sodas and chips that we would scrounge our little money together to buy at the gas station. Of course that was very unhealthy, but for a little while the eating disorder thoughts went away. I didn’t think about calories or sugar, I just enjoyed having fun and eating like that all the time. (I wasn’t really allowed to have many sugary foods or drinks growing up, I was raised mostly eating healthy foods, so being able to eat like that every day was a whole new experience for me.) When we entered quarantine, of course I couldn’t go out with them every day anymore, and taking a step back from that life style I realized how unhealthy it was. For a few months tho, I ate mostly the same, feeling terrible about my body but enjoying unhealthy food too much to care. (Here’s where tiktok comes in) A few months in however, I started being exposed to more weight loss trends on tiktok. Of course there was the whole ‘glow up during quarantine’ thing where everyone was obsessed with Chloe ting, but that was perfectly fine. I tried a few of her workouts but could never stick to them 😅. Anyways, from there I started drifting more into purely weight loss tiktok. I started becoming more and more obsessed with fasting and weight loss recipes, stuff like lemon water etc. The eating disorder came back, and I started developing depression very quickly. I would try and go days and days without eating, and if I couldn’t I would feel guilty and ashamed, which often lead to binge eating. I was fed all this false information about weight loss, how I should be in an extreme calorie deficit, how I should stay under 1000 calories per day. That went on for months. I saw no progress in my body of course, and it came to be that whenever I ate anything or drank anything other than water, I would get extremely bloated because it had gotten to a point where my stomach wasn’t used to food. As time progressed, I started to see this more glamorized lifestyle on tiktok. A lifestyle proposed by skinny alt girls who never ate anything, never slept, and did a ton of drugs. I wanted to be like them, I wanted people to idolize me like people idolized them in the comments of their videos. I wanted my ribs to show, I wanted my arms and legs to be only skin and bones. That was at the height of it, about two months ago. I would go far too long without eating, only having monster energy drinks once a day and trying to stay awake all night so I would have big bags under my eyes.
A few weeks ago, I started to realize how bad it was. I wanted to get out of it, I started to crave a far more healthy lifestyle where I was able to work out without passing out, where I could eat three meals a day plus snacks and not get extremely bloated and feel guilty. I started to eat more, buying more vegetables and fruits, experimenting with fun healthy recipes to see what I liked best, starting to become more active, etc. It’s been tough, I still have a lot of eating disorder thoughts, and I still struggle to get over 1500 calories even though I’m eating three filling meals. Now I work out every morning on weekdays, and it’s something I look forward to because I’m proud of myself for being active and I feel good after every workout even if I’m extremely sore. I enjoy making meals, and cooking is becoming more and more of a hobby that I very much enjoy. I have an app that I use to track my calories, carbs, protein, and fat, I try my best to eat foods that are high in all four but I still haven’t found an ideal meal that contains all four. If anyone has any tips for that, it would be nice to hear.
My sleep schedule is still pretty bad (I’m writing this at three in the morning)
But I’m definitely trying to get better.
I’m sorry for writing so much, sometimes it just helps to be open about this stuff to complete strangers online lmao. A note to any girl my age who may be struggling with an eating disorder: your body is perfectly fine. You don’t need to change it for anyone, and if you feel uncomfortable with the way you look now, don’t resort to starving/binge eating. There’s thousands of healthier ways to lose/gain weight, and I guarantee you a healthy lifestyle will be much more fulfilling. You are perfect and beautiful how you are, and you’ll probably regret it in the future if you spend your whole teenage years obsessing over what you look like. Just go have fun, and fight your insecurities with confidence.
If anyone read this far, I applaud you.

The origin of my eating disorder was deeply rooted in seeing people eat and recommend 800-1200 calories. It made me think that that was normal and necessary when that couldn't be farther from the truth. It breaks my heart that this shit could be influencing so many to go down the horrific path I did 😔

Some women cannot lose weight while breastfeeding and your body isn't broken if you don't! I've had 2 kids and as long as I breastfed, I was so hungry and my body held on to every oz of chub I'd gained during my pregnancies. As soon as I stopped, the weight flew off and I got back to my prepregnancy weight within a few months of weaning each time. Hormones are insane. Some women drop weight like crazy while breastfeeding; some hang on to weight while breastfeeding. Neither is bad. You just made a human with your body! Postpartum is just survival, focus on healing and replenishing your nutrient stores.
