    I fell for one of these "diets" last year, eating like 800 calories a day and doing a minimum of 15,000 steps. I thought that because I was doing fish, whole grains, protein and tons of veggies, kale, spinach etc it was "healthy". I dropped a ton of weight and was exhausted, dizzy and grumpy the whole time, so I started adding tons of caffeine/energy drinks. Very bad idea, ended up anemic with vitamin deficiencies and hair falling out. I'm still recovering from it 7 months later.

    • @Liv-eb9yv
      @Liv-eb9yv 3 года назад +13

      Same here! When I was younger I went on an extreme diet… For me it was around 1,000 calories a day (when I got hungry I’d just eat a ton of cucumber or lettuce) and I would walk 15, 16, sometimes 20,000 steps a day. My hair fell out (was all over my pillow, clumps in shower), I felt super sluggish, I was out of breath walking up stairs. Zero energy in my legs especially. Had trouble sleeping at night. Anyway, obviously it wasn’t sustainable and I started eating like normal again and although I gained back the weight, I feel a million times better now and would never do one of those diets again. I’m also at a healthy weight for my height now. And that’s not from starving myself. Exercise 2-3 times a week (yoga or Pilates), leisurely walking (6-10k steps a day) and healthy diet. Lots of protein + carbs + healthy fats. Eat a lot of chicken and quinoa and tofu and eggs. I used to only allow myself to eat egg whites, and that’s like the most flavorless part 😂 I can’t even eat under 1400 nowadays because it makes me feel crappy… idk if it’s because I used to starve myself and if my calories drop too low my body is just like WTF NO NOT AGAIN lol

    Tiktok gives me flashbacks of growing up in Korea, you can’t have foods you enjoy at all, you’re not eating much bc you’re always on some “diet” and no one is there to correct you because everyone condones it... people stick to their ed triggering and enabling communities and that just causes them to spiral even further. It’s terrifying how hard it is to see your ED coming when you surround yourself with the wrong people online.
    On the other side of tiktok, people thinking eating large amounts of very very unhealthy foods as a staple is.. relatable? Cute?

    When I was sick in my starve-based ED I eventually ended up in a daycare facility (you’re there instead of work or school for a period of time, but your home on the evenings and weekends. Like a half inpatient half outpatient thing) and on wednesdays they closed early because they had their weekly group session for BED. Because yeah, that’s ALSO an ED and they made sure to treat all kinds of EDs there, no matter how it showed it self.
    I think it’s really sad how we somehow refuse to accept BED as a “real ED” just because their battle with food looks different than what media has showed

I myself tried it and on some days I honestly wasn’t hungry until noon or 1 o’clock but on others it sucked because I’d be extra hungry around 9 or 10 but would be so focused on watching the clock to see when I could eat that I was miserable instead of listening to my own body.

    • @jwoolman5

      Take a look at Eric Berg’s videos that touch on intermittent fasting. He always says that if you’re hungry, eat. But don’t eat if you’re not hungry, it’s ok to skip or delay a meal. Sounds as though you just shouldn’t be rigid about it but adjust from day to day if you think longer fasting periods might be beneficial. Just don’t force it.
      If you have any insulin resistance (the defining characteristic of Type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes), gradually extending the natural fasting period while we sleep can help fix that because it reduces the time of insulin surges, giving the body a chance to gradually normalize and also to do some cleanup and repair work (autophagy).
      My natural pattern seems to be “intermittent fasting” because I often don’t want to eat for a long time after waking up. It isn’t uncommon for me to have one or two meals a day, but they are just larger than if I were eating more frequently and take me longer. I also have eaten several small simple meals a day when dealing with allergies or other conditions. I have trouble eating under stress (such as under a deadline) but know which foods I can eat even under those conditions without bothering me, in case I do get hungry.
      Any pattern can work for weight loss or maintaining weight. So really, just follow your appetite to decide when to eat, but eat good food when you do eat.

    this video made me feel so bad and scared for myself but at the same time im so grateful for stumbling upon your video.

I lost this weight eating 1550 calories a day. Trying to mk sure I included veggies, fresh fruit and I even started loving Greek yogurt fruit on bottom as a snack. As someone with PCOS AND a binge eating disorder, it SUCKS and diet promotions are a trigger. I remember before my official diagnosis, I was at my heaviest point and trying so hard to eat well and I exercised so hard. But I was lucky to lose a few pounds (And I needed to lose a lot more than just a few pounds) which would come right back within a week with one screw up and I would have to start over. I remember trying to tell my doctor that I was having trouble losing weight and had an eating disorder, and they just told me to eat less and work out more even though I practically went anorexic and was working my ass off at the gym.
    Fortunately, I was eventually able to get the PCOS diagnosis and started treatment for it. I have better doctors and am seeing a dietitian who is helping me with my relationship with food. I was also put on meds so that my body can work more how its supposed to and weight loss would actually be possible
    Diet culture is bullshit. And doctors don't always know what they're talking about.

    6:20 the comment was surprisingly difficult for me. I lost a lot of weight because I had zero appetite and my hunger cues disappeared (this is mental health related). I struggle to eat still. I think coming from not eating, eating a lot of “fun” processed foods is actually great progress.
    Because processed food is heaps better than no food and when you are young and have a difficult relationship with food, cooking your own food (even rather processed food) is a huge challenge. So being at a point where she eats enough calories to sustain her body each day, is moving in the right direction (even though still a sign of disordered eating).
