  • In this weekly vlog of Barefoot Travels we finish the story of the beached sailboat La Vita. Last week we showed you how La Vita broke her mooring and was washed ashore. They managed to turn her around but made significantly more damage to the hull.
This week you will see them brutally push her back into the water and the consequences of this.

I am surprised about the lack of directing the operation by the owner or the skipper, but I was already surprised they did not empty the boat as soon as it was on the beach. If you just leave it up to the crowd, the crowd cannot be blamed. I still feel sorry for the owner for having almost made it. Losing the boat there must have hurt even more.

  • @mordokch
    @mordokch 2 года назад +26

Honestly I'd have been surprised if it'd turned out any other way. That boat needed to be out of the water immediately or have float bags attached at the very least. Really it needed craning onto a road transporter if at all possible, it would have most likely done more damage to the hull, but the hull looks like it's toast anyway - at least it would have been dry and 'possibly' patchable later. Well it'll be interesting to see the conclusion anyway ;)

It’s definitely been interesting to watch the process. Something to learn from and create a plan if this were to happen to us or someone else we know.

If you watched the first video, it really looks like the hull was fine until they started pushing it around with the backhoes, shoved planks under it, and cracked it.

This happened to me in NZ. I took some sage advice from a gentleman who grew up in a smily that would intentionally beach their 50Ft fishing boat until the next season. Start her parallel to the water. They would dig under her hull and lay round posts in a perpendicular fashion, then use levers to mover her inches at a time.
I have done it three times now over the years- mostly alone. Sometimes I’d get 2 to 3 ft of shift.! When she gets afloat you need to be ready with an anchor ropes etc

Don't know if it is available where the boat is located. Roof patch tar is available in one gallon cans in the US at the big hardware stores. It is black, gooey, and sticks to wet surfaces. The patching tar could have been applied to the outside of the hull where the cracks were located. It could also have been applied to floor mats and then stuck on the outside of the hull over the cracks/holes. "Henry's" is one brand name.

Like I said the other day, The whole thing should have been done on dunnage bags or air... Glad you guys figured that out, sadly it was too late to save the boat. A shame you guys didn't have any roofing tar handy, that could have easily stopped the leaks... Hell, wadded up plastic shopping bags would have worked... Tar would have been hell to clean after the fact, but it's a lot easier to clean than salvage a boat. Also, the water tanks should have been pumped out. Once again, all this could have been avoided by spending an extra day getting everything together and doing the job right, rather than rushing to get it done. Especially the T-shirt clogging the pump... But hey, when you don't learn your lesson the first few times, at least you become a good example of what not to do for everyone else.

The boat was safe on the beach.
What should have happened is a professional salvage team come out.
Even if they just pushed it off the rocks, the salvage team would have had the float bags, pumps and tow boat on scene to move quickly to a boat lift.
It was never going to make it with that motley crew.

Ok wondering if "peel & stick" food wrap would work as a temp quick patch. In the US settlers used big logs tied to the wagon wheels to float their wagons over river crossings, too bad they could not find big tire tubes to help with the float. Have heard of people floating sunk boats with ping pong balls, but never saw it.

    Step #1, call insurance company.
Step #2, file a claim against the people responsible for the mooring.
Step #3, buy a new boat.

Unfortunately here you are responsible for your own mooring. Also it wasn’t insured for this 😞

Pretty obvious there won’t be any insurance pay out on that boat. If indeed it was I sure.

You seem to have given good advice that was completely ignored. Now its an expensive mess. Now that the insurance company has seen this video they may have a word or two with the "captain". I mean leaving t-shirt in the bilge is so insanely stupid. Even then with the cracks getting larger bags should have been kept along the boat. amazing

What a mess. Impatience will cost him a lot. Should have waited for all the air bags and proper equipment. Hopefully it is affordably fixable. Does he have the insurance that covers “nincompoops at
    work”!?!

That was bad , would have been better to leave it on the beach till someone that knew what they were doing was found . At minimum it needed float bags to keep it afloat , the pump always fails as it always sucks something in .

I wonder what the insurance assessor said after seeing this?
Surely the owner would contact them in the first instance and they would arrange approved salvage, or an assessment to determine if it was cost effective to recover.
When damage is done in this way, how can the insurance company be expected to pick up the tab on this?

Could not believe what I was watching the salvage team on the beach were animals and then celebrating as it was sinking on the mooring omg...if the was my boat would have gone mad

    What a set of impossible bunglers!🥴🤡 🤬
This really just was an accident waiting to happen.🥺
Rule #1: Get some full size pig skins with the fat left on (works best), or at least some heavy tarps as well as a diver to pull them under the boat and tie up.👿 This is to reduce leakage.
    A unneeded total disaster‼‼‼😤
But thank you for sharing though!

      Pigs skin? 🤢🥴

@@BarefootTravels Yep, strong enough to poke holes in it and get a rope trough, and the fat works as a waterproof gel, works great.
It's an ancient (probably) Dutch trick.
If its not possible to get it on the outside, you also can use it from the inside (Well stamped and secured).
Actually, if in The Netherlands, you storm into a fully crowded butchers shop (not in a marina, but in an old(er) harbour town) and yell for it, the butcher will drop everything and help you to any size(s) you need, no matter what, no questions asked.😉

Clarifying: the rope(s) go through from the fat side, across the skin, then down through the skin. Apply on the right spot, tighten the ropes, and bob's your uncle.😁
