Nice play through, enjoyed watching. Definitely agree with the game play needing refinement, I always found it frustrating. Just goes to show how well Strider holds up today.
Yeah, it's a really hard game to get into. I forced myself to play through it about 6 times for this video so it wouldn't just be me dying every 3 seconds, lol. But yeah, better design would have prevented that.
The water stage definitely looks great. Maybe it could have used some more unique elements to make it stand out, but it's still cool. There was a lot of potential here, it's too bad for whatever reason, it just didn't live up to it.
I played this in MAME more than several years ago. FF to earlier in the year (or last year?) when it was rereleased on the Switch... It seemed so much more difficult! As for the doppelganger... "Fake". He can be cheesed if you hang on the mirror at a certain spot (near the chest or shoulders of that statue). He'll keep jumping and shouldn't hit you with his attacks.
I haven't been able to get into that Strider. I've tried like 5 times and lose interest in it pretty quickly. Maybe some day I'll hunker down and finish it.
@@orderofmagnitude-TPATP I was so disappointed when I bought that game back in the day. I ended up playing through it for some reason but yeah, it was pretty lame.
Yeah, there was potential with Osman, I feel like when it comes to gameplay they didn't really focus on the right things. A bigger emphasis on acrobatics and interesting level design would have really made it stand out instead of just throwing a flood of enemies at the player, especially in the later levels.
@@InglebardGaming Yatsui-san and I have never talked about it, but I suspect the development was rushed. I will have to ask and confirm. I feel like the nature of arcade games forced it to be so chaotic, compressed and difficult. Probably would've been better had it been for 32-bit/64-bit consoles, to begin with.
Ehhhh I'll concede the game is an acquired taste, and almost certainly better to watch than play. The music may be a bit hum drum but I find the boss music chant entrancing and atmospheric. I really appreciate they tried an aesthetic far removed from the norm, and some of the imagery is amazing, especially the giant city bursting through the clouds.
I rage quit on the last level. Enemies attacking you off screen and killing you with attacks way too fast to react to. It was a fun game but the difficulty was just badly balanced. Changing the checkpoint system on the last level really demotivated me to see the game all the way through. Cool playthrough though.
@@Midekai 100% understand, that last level checkpoint system is ridiculous. They do it in a few other places throughout, also. And the section before that in the prior level where you're going up by those street lamps and stuff is almost as bad, they just filled it to the brim with cheap hits that are almost impossible to avoid.
I replayed this game like a year ago and liked it less than I had remembered. And it’s all because of that last level, which is an unfair nightmare and also the most garish, ugly level ever.
IMO looks crap on a lcd but pretty good on a crt with a checkerboard de-dethering filter, the music isn't bangers but it's got good atmosphere it gets ruined by mame mostly because it uses 2x MSM6295 chips which is a 4-channel ADPCM 8 channels (instruments) at once and at 8-bit (quiet) a lot of arcade boards used it for drums and effects only so these full ADPCM chips needed amps with low pass and high pass filters so when you scale up without all that you get a lot of noise and crunchiness. but if you uses software like DESKFX and do proper lo pass/high pass with a notch it sounds great.
Eh, for me the visual issues are.more about the colors they chose than crisp pixels. The music is just not well composed and there are no memorable melodies. I can deal with relatively poor quality of the music itself is otherwise good - there are lots of examples of that on GBA. Not saying what you suggest won't improve things, but for me it wouldn't fix the issues I have with it.
I was at your page Steve and listened to that startropics remix the production qaulity and mixing was phenominal when i get home ill listen to your other stuff your someone that deserves more traffic
Strider has the difficulty about right, while Osman overdoes it. It needed a little better balancing. I'm not a fan of checkpoints, especially when the final level is such madness. The BGM isn't nearly as engaging or memorable as Strider's soundtracks. Stage 1-1's theme isn't quite the banger that Strider's "Raid!" is. Still a good game, but it falls a little short of Strider. I agree with a 6/10 rating... Strider I'd say is a 9/10.
Yeah, Strider is an all time classic and one of the best action games ever made, IMO. With Osman, it just felt like the devs targeted overloaded action over engaging level and enemy design. Strider was one awesome setpiece after another. Osman is just loaded with frustrating parts that slow progress to a crawl.
It's pretty much all about color and style choice. Strider is much more visually appealing, but this game actually does some more impressive technical stuff. Which it's roughly 7 years newer than Strider, so it should.

I was always fascinated by this game but I see i didnt miss much lol. The colors on that water stage are GORGEOUS.

Ah, ok. If I ever play the game again I'll give that a try 😁
Aside from Strider, it also reminds me a bit of Hagane for the SNES.
A bit.

If that boss had been Wilford Brimely, this game might have been a 10 / 10, lol.
God I wish they would make a sequel to the Strider metroidvania game.

There is the horrible nes version- thats metriodvania like....kind of. Its awful to me though

Great video..i too played it on my channel and last year got the lmr ps5 physical release 😊
Thanks my friend!
Played it before, didn't include any of it really in Strider 2014, but found it interesting nonetheless.

Yeah and having to restart at the beginning of the last level if you die in that first section is maddening.

I once, out of curiosity, thought about purchasing the PCB, glad I did not
It's not great, but there's way worse out there. But still... the colors... My eyes... 💀
Mmm...so all those years later and they make an uglier less appealing game overall? The graphics of Strider is so much better!
