2007 Lexus IS250 AWD storm damage, roof and sunroof replacement time lapse

  • This IS 250 had a tree branch fall on it. The roof skin, sunroof assembly, headliner and rear glass were replaced. The right quarter panel was repaired as well as a few small dents on the sail panels and left quarter. The left doors, trunk, roof and quarters were all painted due to scratches. Before it is put up for sale, it will get a new RF door lock motor, oil change, oxygen sensor and pads and rotors all around. I got an estimate with the car from the shop that totaled it for $11,255.86 which did not include painting the doors or trunk or any mechanical work.

    I wish it was a little more in depth but it was very entertaining! I'm gonna try to do this same repair on a 2007 mustang gt. It was my sisters car that got damaged in a tornado. I've got a donor roof and got some spot weld removal bits coming and I'm gonna purchase a cheap welder from harbor freight. I've never welded before and I've never cut spot welds either. I'm hoping my repair comes out at least half as good as this video. The car only has 50008 miles on it! It runs great, and it'd be a waste if it weren't at least given the chance to be driven to 100000 miles. I'm getting real excited about it! It'll be all scratched up from the tornado, but as long as I can replace the roof and the windows and the mirrors, it should be drivable. I've already driven it around a bit and the only damage it has is to the roof and windows. It drives straight. Everything works. Just a crushed roof.

    this damage does not affect the ca'r's safety and operation, clean title or not its perfectly great.

    • @vehcor
      @vehcor  6 лет назад +18

      This one had a rebuilt title. Any repair if done correctly does not effect safety or operation. This one was basically just simple cosmetic damage but people tend to freak out about roof damage since it is not common. It is usually the last part of the car welded on and the easiest to remove. Thanks for watching.

      with the ridiculous $12k estimate for this repair, it would total a lot of cars. I did extra mechanical work, bought the car, did extra paint/bodywork and transported the car all for far less than the estimate. Some shops are greedy. Some are just afraid of jobs like this even though they are very easy. This thing was done in a weekend.

    That was a lot simpler then I imagined it would have been to replace. I have always stayed away from roof stuff due to not knowing about how hard it was to repair but this looks really simple to accomplish. Are full size trucks more difficult to fix?

    • @vehcor
      @vehcor  5 лет назад +5

      Roofs are usually the last part installed so they are easy to remove. The part that scares people is the amount of stuff in the interior and windows that need to come out. It is also not a part typically damaged so people are hesitant to attempt the repair. Most full sized trucks use the same process as this.

    I've done my fair share of rebuild i never tried a roof repair would you say its straightforward i always thought that the car would never be the same

    • @vehcor
      @vehcor  6 лет назад +6

      This was an easy one, it was only the roof skin and the one rear cross bar. None of that is structural, it is actually very easy. This car was done in a Friday evening painted Saturday and assembled on Sunday. People get scared because it is an unusual panel to get damage and you have to pull glass and headliners but it is not bad at all.

    • @krajncar
      @krajncar 6 лет назад

      vehcor I appreciate the reply I’m going to try it it now I’ve always frayed away but they are normally always cheaper when the roof is smashed in so I assumed that it was a much harder job but now I’m going to try it

    Did the replacement roof have the cross braces already in it? I saw you take out the old ones but didn't see or missed the replacements.

    • @vehcor
      @vehcor  5 лет назад +3

      I left the rear and center attached to the used roof skin (you can see them as I put the roof skin on). I left the original front in the car and put the new glue in to glue it back to the roof (that is what was in the caulk gun). Leaving the braces on the skin saves time and material. When I took it apart it was just easier to cut out the skin and remove the edges when I had more access.

    • @coolwhatever0322
      @coolwhatever0322 6 лет назад

      Raina Lewis if he had bought it for low, and you can notice how he tried to save up. I don’t think this car cost him much to make and probably make a low profit since it’s not such a recent car neither a car with big demand. So it would be worth it if you have time and got the car for a really cheap amount and the car not demanding that much of a cost for new parts.

    • @vehcor
      @vehcor  6 лет назад +8

      Everyone is always concerned with profit..... Just like Wal-Mart is not going to tell you what they paid for something they sell, neither will I, it is bad business practice. This is a hobby for me, most hobbies cost people money so I'm happy to break even and sell the car cheap and quick. I invested less than 15 hours in this one so it wouldn't take much money to make it worth it. For example, if I made $1500 which is far less that what a shop would make for the repair, that would be $100/hour. I'm not a doctor or lawyer so that seems pretty good to me! All of my cars are worth it to me, I'm not in this to make a fortune, which is why my rebuilds are of higher quality than the people only focussed on profits.

    I read you get most your cars down south. Who do you use to transport and what does this usually cost?

    • @vehcor
      @vehcor  6 лет назад +2

      I actually get them from all over, this one came from Connecticut. I try to go south to avoid rust and I also like it down there. All the southern Lexus IS are RWD. That would make it hare to sell in Chicago so I had to get both of the ones I had from up here (the 2011 came from Indy). I try to pick most of them up myself, I like driving. I usually try to find a load to transport out so I'm not traveling empty and that covers the cost of shipping my car. I do use transport companies but only when I can't get the cars myself or they are on the east coast.(I hate the east coast, sorry, I know you are from NY). Transport companies can be a pain, they have failed to pick up some of my cars, damaged others and don't always get there on time. The auctions provide shipping rates on their sites and those are usually the high end. You can get a good deal on Uship but time is a factor. You have only four days of free storage (sometimes only two). Any time I have a shipping company deliver my cars, I keep their number to call direct and save some money on the broker fees in the future. Shipping prices vary with fuel prices, tolls, and dead zones. Most shippers seem to want to be at $1.00 a loaded mile on average. The longer the trip, the lower per mile as you are not loading and unloading. Local tows are usually a set price. I do have connections near different auctions that will pick-up and hold my cars until it is a good time for me to get them.

      Ok, first off, great memory! NY it is (Buffalo).. geez, you find the time to go get these cars too! I'm trying to figure it all out. It's can be overwhelming but as stated I have my Dad, been running his own collision shop for 40 years. He only does cars for close friends and family now. We currently are rebuilding a 2009 Impala. It will be my everyday driver. Was hit in the rear extensively. I'd send a pic but don't know how. I'm trying to figure this out so I can do the majority of the next one. Interests me very much. I commend your operation.

      I started with cars that were in Chicago and once upon a time a trip to Milwaukee or Springfield (90 minutes) seemed far. Now I consider a one way trip less than 6 hours to be local. My dad has had a shop almost as long but we don't get along when we work together (imagine the Teutuls from American Chopper). Buffalo is not too bad, I just can't stand NYC and the rest of the east coast, the traffic, roads and crazy drivers are too much for me.lol

      vehcor yep, I'm learning together. The plan would be to kick him out of his shop and let me succeed and fail on my own. Btw, I dislike big cities too. Matter of fact, I own 25 acres in Alleghany where I'm an enthused archery hunter.

    • @vehcor
      @vehcor  6 лет назад +3

      Don't kick him out too soon! Experience is something they can't teach in books and his guidance can be the difference that allows you to succeed. I used to live in the middle of nowhere but the city is starting to surround me! I does help with selling though as there are more buyers in a smaller area. If you buy anything in Chicago, let me know, I can always help you with shipping if I'm headed that way.

    • @vehcor
      @vehcor  6 лет назад +3

      The IS is available in a convertible, just not a four door. A lot of work is associated with making a car a convertible and I have thought of it on other cars to be honest. For the costs involved, it would be a big time loss for me in resale, not to mention the time involved. So, it kind of gets filed in the list of builds I may attempt when I retire along with building a restomod and making a car into a pick up. Thanks for watching, sorry, the sunroof is as close as this one gets to a convertible.

      ChromoFed It’s really hard to legalize and you need to put a lot of new things in the car that it didn’t already have in order to make it a convertible.

    • @JeffDeWitt
      @JeffDeWitt 6 лет назад

      For the legalities it depends on the car. I know of at least one 53 Studebaker Commander convertible and it wasn't a big deal. Now turning a car that was never even offered as a convertible into one, and doing it right, IS a big deal. But for the right car, and this is one, if you have the resources, it's well worth it. ruclips.net/video/8K-h9u6pJCo/видео.html

      Those are a little more work. They don't have the little plastic strips to hide the spot welds on the roof like the newer cars. If I remember correctly, the skins end in the door jambs. Little things like that is why I always say the newer stuff is easier to work on. There might be more packed into a smaller space but it is still easier, at least to me.

      We have all learned that same lesson. When I was grinding and able to direct the sparks away from glass and plastic, it was not important. I get excited to get into the work so I don't do the stuff I will have to do eventually anyway. I actually should have covered it from the beginning so I wouldn't have to do it later and it would be protected the whole time. Procrastination is a character flaw that makes me wait until the HAS to be done, not just when it should be done.

      I have not put this one up for sale yet, I was on vacation and around the holidays is just a slow time for selling anyway. Blind Bandit is correct. Although the roof skin is large, it holds no real structural value, it is really just a piece of sheet metal like a fender.

      Weld through primer is used on all welded panels and cavity wax and undercoat are used where applicable. I use etching primer on any inner panels that are covered up by other panels in areas that do not need to be welded for extra corrosion protection. Most people say that the cavity wax will take care of it but a little extra insurance never hurt. The outer panels all get etching primer before painting.
