This show FUCKING rocks. Everything about it, genius. I didn't think I was going to like it when I stumbled upon it, but I gave it a go and SO glad I did!
I, for one, love the contemporary music on "Peaky Blinders." I think it's sexy and mischievous and irreverent, and reminds me that people in that time period were bad-ass.
+TheCableguy x that's the best thing about them, so many US shows get ruined by being rammed full of pointless subplots and unnecessary drama just to stretch the show out for a few more episodes
saw it last night and by word was it worth my time. beautifully shot, great acting and a great story line. some people complained about the accents but the period it's set in there wasn't generally what you called a birmingham accent. it's set right after ww1 a period when you had a lot of people moving around the uk looking for work, not to mention all the people flocking in from europe escaping ww1 and the russian revolution. i highly reccomend this show.
I've read that the accent was under toned because the audience is international so they want to convey the message to all and not having much difficulty to follow. Other than that, I'm loving this series a lot. It's very thick and distinct.
LOVE this series; the love, hate, dedication to family, deal making, the costumes are authentic, and some good lookin' men...and the Irish accents! Love it and can't wait for Season 2!
Stop arguing about stuff that is not important. This series is really, really good. It doesn't have to be historically acurate to a detail. Congratulations to screenwriter, actors and director. Great work!
Great show and as a Yorkshireman I understand how getting the accent right is important to people with regional accents. Can't say if they got it right but I hope they did you Brummies justice.
My 74 year old Brummie father said he had watched the show and thought the acting was superb, the production also and the story close to the stories he was told by his grandparents who were around from the late 19th century onwards in the city. He also said that the accents were appallingly poor and not accurate at all, I guess he'd know as he sounds a bit like Ozzie himself. However, suggested people do not disect it too much and it didn't spoil the programme at all for him. Sorted then!
I liked this show and am looking forward to the next series tho I really hope they stop using contemporary music for the soundtrack. I hate to be obvious and mention Boardwalk Empire here but, when I watch BE and they use period music it makes me feel as if I am actually back in 1921 or whatever if only for an hour. When they play current music, it reminds me that I am watching a period piece. As well as adding to the overall period feel, BE has made ppl aware of the music of the past such as early jazz, ragtime, barbershop quartets,Irving Berlin etc. I would love for PB to do the same with all the old British music hall songs. This is really only a minor quibble as I think that the series is otherwise excellent, and does a great job of conveying post WW1 working class Birmingham and showing us a time, place and ppl that otherwise would have been forgotten. It also shows that there's more to Britain's gangland history than the Krays and London's Eastend. Ramble/rant over lol.
***** The show does use a contemporary soundtrack but it is well integrated. At moments when they are fighting or any other moment for that matter , the soundtrack only enhances the scene and ads to the overall toughness of the it.
The ending of episode 5 was quite bizarre in that it seemed quite conclusive. On that basis I presumed it was the final episode, but turned out it was the penultimate one.
Brum, being a cross roads for the Britain has always had plenty of immigration from all over the UK and later the world, that combined with it's markets and metal trade made it a very attractive place for many to find work and that is probably something to do with the unusal an isolated accent or it could be from the original settlers many hundreds of years before, we'll never know. I'd be certain that the accent would have been very similar to today's older folk who are still alive though. :)
Its a good series, tho the only gripe I have is the use of contemporary music such as the White Stripes which I feel slightly diminishes the period feel. I think they should take a leaf out of Boardwalk Empires books and use the music of the era. It would be great to hear all those old long forgotten English music hall classics in their original scratchy grainy glory :) Other than that, Peaky Blinders is a blinding show :D
You're right in what you say regarding the industry but the Birmingham accent would have have been already well established as my grandparents were testament to that. Certain words would now be archaic but that's about it really I reckon. I think it's just bad acting that they cannot take it off, but as already stated it's not an easy one to do.. thank god they weren't trying to take off Worcester accent in 1920s. Ha!
That's not true from my experience. Both my grandparents were around during WWI and they kept the same accent all their lives? I admit certain words were different as you would expect through the passing of time. Though as in all cities the accent will differ in breadth from area to area and of course education. I think a really great example of early 20th century Brummie accent.. check out "Martin Shaw speaking Brummie" on youtube, and even that was broader in comparison to my grandparents.
i like the series . but its so far from reality . i mean when was the last time gangster's were so soft hearted and forgiving ? lol or i guess thats how gangs in uk are . cause no gang or group will let a spy slip away without putting her head on a spike . or let their sister still be part of family even after she marrys someone outside the gang . or when you kill a gangs leader and rest of his member's just walk home like nothing happend (when shelby killed kimber) other then i like the series .
well, first of all, there were a lot of gangs, all of them different. Tbh, we can't really know now how they were since it's been a lot of time, I doubt the gangs that we ave now are the same as they were years ago. But I agree that sometimes they're too soft, but hey, they're humans too, and that's just a tv show.
+bugsyX Swati I think you have a very fictional view of gangsters. Gangsters a human too and they have their own deep, personal reasons for doing things. This series shows that brilliantly. But it doesn't skimp on the brutality at all. To explain some of the things you pointed out; Tommy had shut himself off completely emotionally after the war. Grace rekindled something inside him and then betrayed it. Tommy, whilst enraged at the betrayal, couldn't bring himself to kill the first thing he has loved in years. As for the sister marriage thing; Freddy is Tommy's best friend, even of things have been tense between them. And finally, Kimber's gang had nothing left to fight for. They didn't see any reason to further risk their lives for nothing.
WanBaw McGraw My views in general about gangs are not fictional .I was watching a documentary about tommy guns and their part in 60's gangster dominance. Some of stories were absolutely brutal their way of retaliation and revenge was horrifying they would murder not just the person they had beef with but also his wife and even new born baby and kids. But i guess they had to improvise core and violence in showing a story about gangsters because it is a family drama and i dont think anyone would want to see stuff like that .
Worth watching u mean? Totally! Just watch season 1-3 now.. its freaking amazing, little bit slow start, when after 2-3 epesodes you will understand, Cheers mate, hava a nice day sir

One of the best TV series in years!
@Joe Lee Yes, just imagine. Not so hard, I think.
@Joe Lee imagine hating on someone for absolutely no reason.
the thing i hate most about british shows is they never do enough episodes
+TheCableguy x because usually they dont have enough budgets like us dramas do
+TheCableguy x that's the best thing about them, so many US shows get ruined by being rammed full of pointless subplots and unnecessary drama just to stretch the show out for a few more episodes
Quality not quantity my friend. They want to leave you wanting more.
British shows, unlike American shows, prioritise quality over quantity.
@Joe Lee do i care.
Why did cillian not win more awards for this role?!
OMG??!! Cillian Murphy in a series?! Every week I get to watch him now?! YES!
saw it last night and by word was it worth my time. beautifully shot, great acting and a great story line. some people complained about the accents but the period it's set in there wasn't generally what you called a birmingham accent. it's set right after ww1 a period when you had a lot of people moving around the uk looking for work, not to mention all the people flocking in from europe escaping ww1 and the russian revolution. i highly reccomend this show.

Other than that, I'm loving this series a lot. It's very thick and distinct.

One of the best Netflix series mark my words this is a gold mine pls lets keep digging towards the right direction.
As you can clearly see in the video it's not a Netflix series. It's a *BBC* series which is funded, produced, first broadcast and owned by the *BBC.*
@@danielgardecki1046as you can clearly see you need to relax ❤
Sooooo good... Cant wait for S3
LOVE this series; the love, hate, dedication to family, deal making, the costumes are authentic, and some good lookin' men...and the Irish accents! Love it and can't wait for Season 2!
these are brummie accents, dumbass
Sam Neill plays a Irish cop = Irish accent
+hetrodoxly Failing to recognise a regional accent does not make a person stupid, you were needlessly rude.
+hetrodoxly "Sara O 1 year ago
these are brummie accents, dumbass" - Pretty sure "dumbass" equates to stupid...unless you have a different theory?
+hetrodoxly Clearly just a mistake mate, sorry if it ruined your day.
Stop arguing about stuff that is not important. This series is really, really good. It doesn't have to be historically acurate to a detail. Congratulations to screenwriter, actors and director. Great work!
come on Birmingham, something from my home town!
Great show and as a Yorkshireman I understand how getting the accent right is important to people with regional accents. Can't say if they got it right but I hope they did you Brummies justice.

Kind of. But in Peaky Blinders, the action happens in one city only

A little bit,yes
This looks great - when will they be showing it on BBCA?
The ending of episode 5 was quite bizarre in that it seemed quite conclusive. On that basis I presumed it was the final episode, but turned out it was the penultimate one.

Can't believe they have the dumb and dumber song as their intro

no point in having this debate because if historical evidence can't convince you otherwise nothing will.
Waiting for s6
We still don't know why BBC didn't put any budget on this video...¿
brummie says get this thing right
and one of my grandfathers was from Dublin.
Not gonna lie, I clicked this because I saw Cillian Murphy.
Does anyone remember a long forgotten drama from the 70s called Gangsters that was set in Birmingham too? Cant remember if it was BBC or ITV tho.

+Antarctica im pretty sure US gangs around that time had just as weird names
WOOoaah wow wow wow
You really think the Brummie accent is the same now as it was 100 years ago?
Regarding cillian murphy being underated.hes not.hes a successful actor who stars in big films
read my previous comments or better yet visit your local library and find some books about birmingham's history.

***** Gangs differ in the violence they dish out though. It may be that what you saw was about a particularly savage gang
Jared Leto brought me here
Told us nothing about the plot?
hes a business man, that wants to make his business more successful
England Bordwalk empire
For me Peaky Blinders is better than Boardwalk Empire, have better rhythm.
Ohhhhh...
The next #BoardwalkEmpire ?
Peaky Blinders
Better than breaking bad
Two vastly different shows. Not sure how you compare the two.
Guys name of the song anyone ?
is it worth it?
Worth watching u mean? Totally! Just watch season 1-3 now.. its freaking amazing, little bit slow start, when after 2-3 epesodes you will understand, Cheers mate, hava a nice day sir
