Hi, wanted to thank you for a great video! I removed the oil pan on my 2005 Porsche 911 Carrera Convertible (997) some three months ago. It is pretty much the same procedure. Was very happy that I did not find any nasty surprises in there (75,000 km on the motor), but equally happy that I was able to give everything a good clean before putting it back together. Fairly straightforward job to do; the hardest part is squeezing the sealing compound out of the tube. :)

    Hey Aaron,
Hope you’re doing well. Those particles in your pan and in your oil filter are troubling. Not sure if you caught a sample of your old oil as you were draining it. If you did, I’d recommend sending a sample of your oil to Blackstone laboratories for analysis. They may be able to offer insight as to what may be going on.

Nice work on your Boxster. My 2001 S, 88,000 miles had the same plastic shavings in the pan, they were camshafts rail tensioner/guides. I had them replaced along with IMS and clutch. It was costly, but it made the car run way better than before. I assume it helped with the timing, but it was definitely worth the investment and hopefully she'll run for another 88K.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I was wondering where all the small bits of plastic (smaller than 1/2 of a green pea) found in my 08 CS oil filter came from. It's good to know a potential source is the camshafts rail tensioner/guides. Do you know of potential problems from driving with broken camshafts rail tensioner/guides?

  • @texsquirrel213

The plastic is the chain pads.
    The aluminum is worrisome.
Could be piston skirting. ( borescoring) although that is more rare in Boxsters.
Best to borescope from below with the sump plate removed.
Cut the oil filter, stretch it out and use a magnet to look for ferrous metal.

Next time, leave two bolts in the sump pan (loosened of course) when you pry the sump plate so the sump plate doesn’t suddenly come off spilling all the oil and debris.(Hopefully no debris)
The Loctite is a real workout to push out of the tube!

Very helpful video. I'm partway through this, waiting for 4 new sump bolts to replace ones that had galled, very stressed that they were going to snap off in the block.
Don't think my pan had been off since leaving the factory. Lots of little plastic bits (cam chain pads I presume) like you had and some metallic paste collected on the pan. No metal shavings, but a chip of hard white stuff, no idea what that could be...

Oh, we are doing the same work on our cars not just in the same order. I dropped my sump a few weeks ago to install X51 oil baffle (before the AOS replacement) and found some small metal shavings in the oil filter, but not in the sump. I’m now in the process of replacing the IMS, don’t dare to risk driving the car before I check it out.
Plastic and metal could be chain guides I guess. That’s not good. I hope you find the source before any serious damage occurs.

I've just replaced the IMS bearing on my Boxster, also '98 2.5l, after finding lots of small metallic 'glitter ' on my filter. It was still the original dual row bearing. In one piece but balls v. worn and centre bolt wobbly. Bearing and IMS shaft were full of glitter. My rescue plan for the motor is to do some short interval oil and filter changes to try flush the metal out. Car already has 184000km on.
I replaced the bearing with the Pelicans Parts single row kit. Reasons being its price, and it's sealed, so residual glitter can't get in and mess up the new bearing.
...just a caution to those with dual row M96 motors. Keep checking your oil filter.
