Hydralic lifters loose pressure over time. As the engine warms and the oil thins the lifters pump up. Had a customer insist I set the tappets wrong. Humble pie served after 10 mins.
Bought mine three years ago for 10,500. I could sell it now for 13,500 in a heartbeat. But I won't. I love it. Hold out for a low mileage S model. They're out there, just be a little patient.
The 996 is 90% Boxster. Keep up the mtc. When something breaks fix it immediately. I don't care if you have synthetic oil or not do an oil change every 3,000 mi. And you need to drive these cars they cannot sit for two or three months and then drive it for 30 mi and put it back in the garage for another 2 months then drive it another 25 40 mi then put it back in the garage for another month because when you're the finally decide to get on it that's when you're going to break stuff.
This is literally the best spec I've ever seen of my childhood dream car. Always wanted a 986 with a hardtop and that interior is worth anything that ever goes wrong with the vehicle in my opinion.
also love all the porche content. if anything seeing continuity across videos makes me feel like i'm actually learning something more in depth about the cars. thanks again.
As someone who bought one of these new, I can tell you the interior is called…..Boxster red, what else of course? The concept car was the same colours as yours, the same colour red was an option in the 996/911, and they still called it Boxster red. Great buy, I’d have bought it too👍
With that old-style manual hood/trunk release, there is a physical lock bar that rotates into place when the car is locked. And some of the early models don't have a way to get power to the car through the driver's kick panel fuse box, so if the battery dies when the car is locked, it becomes a massive headache! When Porsche went to electronic release, they added a little pull-out-fuse that you could hook power up to and disarm alarm etc.
Congrats, great buy! If you due a full detail , get some factory wheels, complete fluid change, new bakes, etc the car will be great and will sell easily
Yes, it was worth the gamble. If you can get it cleaned up and reasonably presentable, it should be a winner. p.s. The LS 911 is sooooo tempting; better looking each time shown.
When you first started it, I was thinking cylinder bore scoring and that you would need some oil analysis or the right technique with a bore scope, but after the oil circulated, it sounded much better. Interior is very nice.
Yeah, I try to drive my 98 at least once a week, but if the weather is icky or I need my truck a lot it may sit longer. Once it gets around 2 weeks with no driving it always sounds iffy for a bit at start. Been that way the whole time I've had her (11 years!). I wouldn't panic too much, especially after 4-5 years of sitting!
This has to be a win surely! Tart it up, get some nice wheels and you will see a tidy profit after a good detail. Stripped and sold off for spares it has to be worth more than what you paid
IDK IF PORCHE IS THE SAME BUT ON THE MOPAR V6 I HAD THE SAME NOISE AND NOTICED THAT ANY RPM BELOW 3K RPM OIL PRESSURE RUNS AROUND 34 PSI BUT WHEN YOU HIT 3K EXACT IT SHOOTS UP TO 78-80 PSI. I WOULD LOOK INTO IT, JUST A THOUGHT.
Porsche, porsche, porsche! You keep making them...we'll keep watching them...and hopefully BUYING them! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! With this spec (my FAVORITE color combo) I would definitely have bid $1700 on this.
Hey I’m just getting into cars and I’ve always loved driving Carreras in grand theft auto. Seeing how awesome it is the way you restore Porsche boxsters with an initial buy at low. I was wondering if you could lmk what auction sites are your go to. I tried looking up donated auction sites but couldn’t find anything haha
My repair shop gets several cars like this a month that we have to diagnose and repair. It's always the same story from the client. "I just bought it and I got a great deal" :)
So that noise is the Valves and they have to get good oil pressure for them to quiet down. Apparently, a LOT of modern cars have this problem because of the super thin oil used in so many cars nowadays. How can so many people that are supposedly " car guys " still not know some basic things about how an engine actually works ? Whatever

I love the Boxter or other Porsche content, bring more of it
More on the way 🫡
@JR Garage Please do the VALE GT1 bodykit
I feel like these older Boxsters will be really super desirable in a few years, you guys are so good at getting them back on the road!
They’re the reincarnation of the Porsche Spyders in my opinion. I used to call mine The Little Bastard lol
they already are
They are nothing special, neither performance wise nor reliability wise. Any Porsche can become collectable if enough fools want to buy it. 😉

Congratulations on another super purchase! Should clean up nice and be a great car. CONGRATULATIONS!!!
That´s the kind of video we want to seee!! keep up the great work searching and fixing new cars!!!!!
That AM Virage was by far my favorite! Good luck on this one!
also love all the porche content. if anything seeing continuity across videos makes me feel like i'm actually learning something more in depth about the cars. thanks again.
Still having a 2001 Triple Black Base Model in our Family, owned it for almost 18 years. Never going to get rid off it...
Loving the Boxster content! So much more relatable than some of the supercar videos (which are still good too).
Yeah, some of the old sites burned me out on "another" Lamborghini.

You can use Liqui Moly hydraulic lifter additive to the oil. It will silence the lifters as long as they are not damaged. Happy Birthday!

The hardtop is worth what he paid for it.
Where are these guys finding these car? When I try online boxster, miata, cayman, all are several times more.
Love the cheap car buys and first wash videos, so much fun and wishing you a very Happy Birthday
I think that car is beautiful. Love it. Oh my God please save that car. I will be following.
When you first started it, I was thinking cylinder bore scoring and that you would need some oil analysis or the right technique with a bore scope, but after the oil circulated, it sounded much better. Interior is very nice.
Bore score is a myth, alongside this IBS thing 😅
Let's go in gear...JR Garage...you did it right ✅️....it starts right away...
Another winning video. Boxster for the Win
Happy birthday 🥳 stay positive, stay strong and ALWAYS have that wonderful smile on you!🎉
Happy birthday bro. Congrats on a nother killer of a deal
I can’t wait to see what the soft top looks like. My guess is that it’s roached. Great purchase.
Congratulations on the awesome purchase. I'm looking forward to the next video on the 1999.
Love this one. great color combo. The hardtop looks so cool open these too.
Happy birthday bro, keep the boxster content coming, I always love it. I might try my own soon.
Keep rockin’ the Boxsters.
That's the plan!
Such a good deal! Just the Hardtop and red interior doubles your investment
"You'll know bad gas when you smell it " lol
I saw a Boxster and had to click it. Love the Porsche content.
Worth the gamble! Nicely done!
Yeah ….. Christian is on and on the scene 😍🔥👍🏻
Got lucky. Major detail and go from there!
Great job, guys. You have that magic touch! With that hardtop, it could bring some bucks. And, happy birthday! 🎉
I just got $2500 for my 986 hard top last month. You sell that (depending on the soft top) and you’ve got a free car
Awesome, hopefully we can sell it and get a free Porsche out of it!
Absolutely worth it. Still a win.
Happy birthday bro! Congrats on another year and another home run boxster! 🎉
Keep doing Porsches. The best! counting down is neat, first time on here, good stuff, wish I could snag one cheap,

You lucky bastard, you did it again !
Same year as my 2 owner baby. I don't have the nicer shift knob or brake lever though.
**Another Boxster video** Ah shit, here we go again lol
Always love seeing these Porsche videos!
jesus dude, that startup sound never gets old
This has to be a win surely! Tart it up, get some nice wheels and you will see a tidy profit after a good detail. Stripped and sold off for spares it has to be worth more than what you paid
The top is worth what he paid for it but why tear up a nice car? That's a sin.
I am watching this one closely. Wow, you guys are developing into Porsche Boxster experts now.
Nice find.. Happy Birthday!!
Happy birthday, the car sounds good
Still have my 2000 986. Love these cars. Thinking about getting another one!
noise pre warmup can be related to even the choice of oil. my 996 would be noisy on mobil 1 but quiet on porsche spec penrite
Dude that hard top alone is worth more than the purchase price! Great job even with parts alone
I had no idea, but sure enough!
@@JRGarage that’s a hell of a deal! I love the 986 personally from the value and performance you can’t beat it
Happy bday bro! Got a cool bday present lmao, loving that Wednesday steak special too hahahah
Would love to see the products you use to fix up/clean the Boxsters. Love the videos.
Looks like another home run for the JR Garage!
I’m just like you, I own 4 Boxsters, a 996, & 958. More to come lucky to get a hard top.
You lucky guy! And belated best wishes from Germany. Hope, you enjoyed your steak!
That things gonna clean up so nice even if it don’t run 100% def worth it
Those are Victory brand wheels. Aftermarket. 10x30 bolt pattern. Nice wheels. Should clean up nice!
i like your videos, but i love your porsche content
Great video!!!
I watch you for the last 6-8 months and tonight I decided to subscribe ...love the content ❤
100% worth the gamble
He's not lying about being frugal. I saw him one day eating lunch at Peter Piper Pizza, that place is cheap af 😂
“I found a water bottle”
“What’s that supposed to mean”
😂😂 lmao
Boxsters are so addictive, I just bought my 3rd, a 981 S😬
IDK IF PORCHE IS THE SAME BUT ON THE MOPAR V6 I HAD THE SAME NOISE AND NOTICED THAT ANY RPM BELOW 3K RPM OIL PRESSURE RUNS AROUND 34 PSI BUT WHEN YOU HIT 3K EXACT IT SHOOTS UP TO 78-80 PSI. I WOULD LOOK INTO IT, JUST A THOUGHT.
This guy is hysterical. Pointing fingers, grimaces and yoyoyolling. My birzdaytoday my birzday.
It’s just crazy how far theses men have gotten remember the car videos in highschool
love your porsche videos. please more porsche content! greetings from germany
6:58 that album alone is worth the purchase 😌
Sweet! Can't wait to see how you all make it spicy again.
That’s a sweet ride. She needs some help but in the end she’ll be great!
Porsche, porsche, porsche! You keep making them...we'll keep watching them...and hopefully BUYING them! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! With this spec (my FAVORITE color combo) I would definitely have bid $1700 on this.

Outstanding buy !! HooAH !!
great find, US owners pay 2500 alone for the hardtop
Love your videos
Happy birthday dud
😎🎈
Nice car ! Sell the top and you break even. Sounds right!
How about an update on the stolen and recovered Super Duty?
I got one for
$1100 and traded a tv for one 7 years ago. I’m known now as Boxster Doctor btw.
My repair shop gets several cars like this a month that we have to diagnose and repair. It's always the same story from the client. "I just bought it and I got a great deal" :)
That’s cool. That’s the kind of video that make me browse copart app hahaha
What do you add to the oil and fuel?
Kudos to your hard work!👍
detail the car, do all the little fixes, and then look into the motor more. I bet driving it will help it get even better.
So, Boxters are basically indestructible. Got it!
These early ones are TOUGH!
So that noise is the Valves and they have to get good oil pressure for them to quiet down. Apparently, a LOT of modern cars have this problem because of the super thin oil used in so many cars nowadays. How can so many people that are supposedly " car guys " still not know some basic things about how an engine actually works ? Whatever
porsche content is always good!
You guys can handle this!
In the future, try putting mystery marvel oil in the car in the beginning. That will help get rid of the knocking really quick!! Great car!!
Congrat's for your birthday. Awesome
A running Porsche for your birthday 🎉 is one sweet gift from the Porsche gods 😂
Nice car at a good price. Makes me wish I had a barn and a hoist and I'd be buying some to move on!
Love this content, dream car.. as always, love the work🥳
Boxsters are underated.
Another one!? Jeez, you really like your Boxsters...
Can't believe the luck on these Boxsters! You are meant to trade these haha
Krazy …I been thinking about getting a old Porsche lol

Happy Birthday from Canada !
