  • In a recent video, we shared that the frame on our RV is broken, and as a result, it may be the end of fulltime RV life for us! In that video, we showed you all of the things that were going on with the RV from the suspected frame failure. At Grand Design's request, we did a "frame flex" test, which entailed taking measurements and sending them off to Grand Design so they could determine if our frame had been compromised. After sending the measurements to them, we awaited their response, in hopes they would provide us with a solution for the path we should take to get this addressed immediately.
    In today's video, we share Grand Design's response to our emails. Let's just say, it is not looking like a favorable outcome for Paving New Paths! We share the communication that has taken place thus far and go over what has become the much bigger issue with Grand Design than just our broken frame! Watch to find out where we stand with them, our thoughts on how they run their company and treat their customers, as well as what to expect when you purchase an RV from Grand Design and see your lifelong dream become a living nightmare!

After watching your informative video, that you supplied a running narrative between your correspondence back and forth with the manufacturer, has made my mind up to take my money to a different manufacturer. This is why these video posts are so important. The rv manufacturers, and not just Grand Design, need to stand behind the customer as well as their products...after the sale. Frame flex? Equals poor construction, poor oversight in the production line and The Worst customer service experience for a faithful customer.
    I hope that the Fifth Wheel manufacturer that I go with, and it will not be GD, upholds any warranty/manufacturing claims that I may experience after the sale, uphold their responsibilities to the purchaser/owner. I'm sorry for your troubles and grateful for your share.

    We had been looking at 5th wheels, mainly for the spaciousness. At the beginning GD was tops on our list. As an engineer, something didn't look right on any of the brands. I followed most of the brand on social media and one thing became clear, most of the issues (across brands) occurred with the rigs over 30 ft or so. The failure on the larger units starts to make sense when you consider the size/weight increases that are on frames that use the same frame/axle/wheels/springs as smaller rigs, for example using 2 axles rated at 7K each on a trailer that, in most cases, exceed 14K lbs. That works only if the trailer never moves, however under normal conditions the suspension is seeing 2-3X that load due to wind, potholes, etc., that's why we see posts complaining about broken axles/springs/blown tires on a daily basis. It's likely this is what also causes the frame to flex and ultimately fail. I determined there's two types of larger fifth wheel trailers - those that have major failure and those that will. We ended purchasing a class A. i like they are built on a real truck frame and are required to meet federal specifications, unlike the flimsy 5th wheel units.

      I agree. I know folks with non- toy hauler GD and none have issues. It’s usually the largest rigs like Momentum that have problems. ALL trailers have frames that flex or else they would snap apart. How much flex and where is the difference and also whether the flex cracks welds.

    I've been following the frame flex or "broken frame" issues on YT for about a year now, and that is how I found your channel. I am now subscribed. What I thought was interesting is that two weeks ago, I went to a local RV show here in Washington State, and the primary brand they were selling were from Grand Design. One of the dealer reps approached me and was bragging about this being the best brand on the market, and that he wouldn't feel comfortable selling other brands to a customer. I then mentioned that I've heard quite a bit about the Lippert frames on these 5th-wheels causing a lot of grief for customers. He had no response, and then changed the subject. That told me a lot. I wish you well with resolving these inexcusable defects by GD., and I'll keep checking in on your progress.

      Maybe part of their customer service training is teaching them how to have no recollection of conversations about "frame flex" that they have been privy to! It's really sad at this point that they take no ownership in the problem they have created! We currently have a 2022 Grand Design which we bought because everyone I knew said they were the best in the industry. Shortly after taking ownership of it, we were impressed with the unit. Everything went as expected and we were happy with it until we took it out for the second time. Things started to break, fail, fall off every time we took it out. We got a few things covered by warranty however they wouldn't cover many of the items that failed even with the extended warranty we purchased. We were going to upgrade to a 5th wheel or toy hauler after a few years and I can say that when we do, we will no longer consider ANY Grand Design product. I am curious/hopeful you find an independent shop to work on your RV and allow filming to share with everyone this RV manufacturer wide problem! Lippert frames are used in all most all RV's (like Kevin said even the higher priced RV's), so it is a VERY large problem that needs addressing. We also have a Momentum that we gave up on Grand Design fixing things years ago! It is horrible when they will not stand behind their product (it is their product if they put it in their RV's!!!!)... I look forward to seeing your resolution!

      We hope to find an independent shop to work with as well! We don't want to fix it without filming the process, as we think it's important to show just how in-depth a fix like this is. We hope that by using our voice to shed light on these issues, the manufacturers' will start making the changes they should have made years ago. We have a video saying that if you get into RV'ing expecting the manufacturer/dealer to do right by you, you are setting yourself up for failure, because after you sign on the dotted line, they forget about you. Some buyers are taken care of pretty well, that is, until the warranty expires!

    When there is a NTsB recall for a vehicle, used or new, the dealer still has to fix it (ex - Takata air bags). Recalls are only "voluntary" when the manufacturer needs to get ahead of the fix to mitigate its risks and costs. Maybe you might want to reach out to the NTSB. And in Texas, maybe filing a complaint with the State Attorney General.

    They are doing their best to avoid a class action lawsuit by denying any wrong doing. With that said, You seem like a handy guy. I would just pull the fifth wheel area apart and examine the welds and structure under your bedroom. Video everything. Based on other videos, that seems to be where they fail. Your correct...i think there is a welder that could repair your issue right where it sits. Also, people are jumping up and down about these new Brinkley trailers but they are on lippert frames too. New campers are built to be light which means thinner frames and lighter materials that are sub par quality. Just my opinion. I hope you get your issue solved soon. Just as a side note...i once left a bad review about a engine manufacturer(frasier engines). The day after it posted...the owner called me and threatened me with a lawsuit for defamation if i didnt remove it immediately. It's had its share of issues....schwintek slides, broken outriggers, roof membrane separating, etc.. GD has fixed all of these issues out of warranty. The key I learned is to go to the National Rally in Elkhart and bring your issues directly to GD Management. I know this isn't an option for everyone.

    This issue doesn’t stop at Grand Design, this issue starts at Lippert and they need to take responsibility for all the junk they build for multiple RV companies. When we purchased our RV one of my must have was to have limited Lippert parts and that’s not an easy task to find. They make everything thing from frames and axles to furniture and everything between.

    • @pendamoniumpaladin1798
      @pendamoniumpaladin1798 8 месяцев назад +1

      An investigation needs to be done into whether Lippert built the frames to meet OEM specs, or if Lippert short-changed the design. This is either an OEM architect design issue or Lippert manufacturing issue. This will clearly decide who is liable for these frames....

    Like all big companies, they act like their 'grand design' of a product is durable and quality....until a major, costly defect happens. Then every company immediately blames the end user for the fault and claims its isolated until enough complaints go to various consumer protection agencies. Where new or used does not matter. Like in the case of Fords garbage 6.4 diesel, or Fords garbage manumatic transmissions in the focus, or more relevant, lippert frames breaking from guess what???? Twisting forces....and obviously grand design is aware of the issue when newer models have strengthened and added reinforcements on later year same model, same floor plan rigs. Side note, people calling manufacturers for their broken frames years ago were told the same, exact things. Isolated, old, used, consumers fault, Then in the following years. The CCC and gvrw's of travel trailers mysteriously dropped. 'imagine' that.

The Facebook groups are a joke. Every group years ago I checked out. They never allow the truth of anything or positive fixes that people have done. As for pin box. The style you have is not a problem. The gooseneck style is with any 5th wheel. As it will apply extra leverage to the trailer mount and frame. That’s why I never use or recommend of.

      Yes, frame flex is the most laughable term in the industry! Call it what it is...broken or a failure! We had no idea who was monitoring/admining the groups until we noticed posts being removed or comments being turned off. If you can't have free speech on a public platform, what are you hiding?

    That is too bad. We have been looking at who is going to make the grade and who is not. Grand Design Solitude was just eliminated from our list because of this and many other issues we have heard that they are having.

      It's probably a smart decision to take GD off of your list at this point! We have heard from a lot of Solitude owners who have experienced frame failure! Good luck with your search!

    Man what a crock of s””t ! That frame was built by lippert to grand designs specs and they probably told grand design there was the probability of it breaking. Maybe lippert could tell you the proper steps to repair it yourself! Would be worth a try!

      We have reached out to Lippert to see if they would share the welding plan with us! So far, no luck!

      Thank you! And we are glad to hear you are happy with your Northwood! Thanks for pointing that out about the slide. I think Kevin has spoken with someone regarding it and it only appears to be delamination, when in fact, it is not. But I will double check with Kevin on this just to be sure!

    I can certainly understand your frustration. Unfortunately, I think it’s all RV manufacturers. We had a Redwood which we loved, but the frame warped, and the insurance company totaled. We then got a DRV because they are supposed to have the strongest frame in the industry. Now I see a lot of people with frame issues with their DRV’s . Lucky we haven’t had any frame issues just lots of other problems. To the point, I don’t want to take it out anymore for fear of what’s going to break next.

    • @PavingNewPaths
      @PavingNewPaths  8 месяцев назад

      We have had many users with DRV's tell us of their frame failure stories! I think if they actually made them to withstand travel, they would be so heavy we wouldn't be able to tow them with a 1 ton dually!

    🤣🤣🤣 Love the shirts!!! I'm so sorry that you guys are having to deal with that! If this is as common of a problem as it appears to be, it may take a class-action lawsuit to get some resolution and make them issue a "recall". Unfortunately, from my understanding of the legalities, especially since you are not the original owners, it is not going to be different than buying a used car out of warranty. That is a risk we take when saving a ton of money buying a used RV or anything else for that matter. I would further suggest that if you're going to pursue legal action, you stop corresponding with Grand Design, leave it to the attorneys, and don't say anything that may hurt your case. I truly hope you and everyone else in this situation ends up with a favorable outcome that doesn't break the bank.
    The cheerleaders may be doing those things for multiple reasons, including maintaining the reputation of the brand for resale value...

      We are glad you like the shirts! We hope they serve as a wake-up call to the industry to DO BETTER! We do feel legal action is coming. Maybe not from us, but from the family that has a family member seriously injured or killed when one of these frames fails going down the highway! And you are very right about the cheerleaders!
