  • NUMBER ONE RUGBY REFEREE REALISES HIS DREAM
As we come to the end of the rugby season, perhaps a song from, in our opinion, the World's number one rugby referee.
We recently recorded this with Nigel Owens for a TV programme.
He always wanted to sing his favourite song with a Male Voice Choir. We in Dowlais were so pleased to help him realise his ambition.
Hope you all enjoy listening to a great referee and a great Choir, as together we sing......MYFANWY.

As a South African who at times got very irritated with Nigel Owens on the rugby pitch, I was completely blown away with his wonderful rendition of Myfanwy. Fantastic - Nigel all is forgiven!

These boys are great, it also reminds me of when in the army at Brecon and going on foot up Dowlias hill toward Tredegar, hoping for a lift to where I lived, and on a Sunday morning. The Dowlais chapel congregations were 'in full song' and as I walked up over Dowliais Hill I could hear the singing, from each chapel, as if to out-do each other. A lovely memory for mine , I was 18, and it was a warm June day in 1956.

Best performance I ever have in my 81years heard. The usual near inaudible roar of bottom bass, is in this performance so nicely balanced with the more prominent alto, and not least the perfect Ballard voice of Mr Owen to capture the pathos. Well done and much thanks.

Hearing it sung with so much passion & sincerity, with Nigel Owens solo as a bonus, makes me very emotional, especially in these very difficult times. Why is it anger, O Myfanwy,
That fills your eyes so dark and clear?
Your gentle cheeks, O sweet Myfanwy,
Why blush they not when I draw near?
Where is the smile that once most tender
Kindled my love so fond, so true?
Where is the sound of your sweet words,
That drew my heart to follow you?
      2. What have I done, O my Myfanwy,
To earn your frown? What is my blame?
Was it just play, my sweet Myfanwy,
To set your poet's love aflame?
You truly once to me were promised,
Is it too much to keep your part?
I wish no more your hand, Myfanwy,
If I no longer have your heart.
      3. Myfanwy, may you spend your lifetime
      Beneath the midday sunshine's glow,
And on your cheeks O may the roses
Dance for a hundred years or so.
Forget now all the words of promise
You made to one who loved you well,
Give me your hand, my sweet Myfanwy,
But one last time, to say "farewell".
It's a love song, but it ranks as one of the saddest love songs in the world.
