- Johann Kaspar Ferdinand Fischer: Prelude and Chaconne from the Musicalisches Blumen-Büchlein of 1698 (the second edition of his Pièces de Clavessin of 1696). This is the eighth and last of the "suites" in the volume, containing only this Prelude and Chaconne.
This replica of Girolamo Zenti's 1637 bentside spinet was made by Seattle instrument maker Jack Peters (jpearlymus@gmail.com) in 1999.
About the instrument:
=================
Case: Alaskan Cedar (the Zenti original was Cypress)
Natural keytops: Olive
Jacks: Bailey (plastic, with delrin plectra)
Keys: 45, with short octave in bass
Pitch: 415
Strings: brass
Maker of replica: Jack Peters, Seattle, WA
Year of replica: 1999
Current home of the original: Brussels, Belgium
Place of origin of replica: Seattle, WA, USA
===================================
As one can see in the picture accompanying the title at the beginning of the video, the short octave in the bass of the Zenti replica has no keys between the C and F, and the F# and G# are tuned to D and E, respectively, in order to give the full diatonic C major scale. It is a simple matter to tune notes that aren't used in that octave to ones that are.
.....but not always such a simple matter to play the music after you've retuned the notes! This piece requires a G# in the bass, but does not need the low C. I retuned the low C to a D, the F# (normally tuned to D) to E, the G# (normally tuned to E) to F#, the F (normally an F) to G, and the G (normally a G) to G#. Then my task was to remember to make those substitutions while playing the piece.
nice to see you again. Amazing music
Mr. Whitney, thank you for years of inspiration, it's because of these videos that I now play around with early music on a 12-string, that I realized music's worth as a domestic activity. Thank you.
This a such a small cute little spinet! The keys are tiny, they remind me of a toy! It has a very “woody” sound. It has a lovely “rustic” quality. I would enjoy hearing “bigger” pieces like bach english suite 808, or maybe royer’s scythian march
Good to see you back
finally...another video...wait so long...
I love how you play harpsichord on the strings rather than treating it literally as a keyed instrument. Some people don’t like the harpsichord because it has too much of a twang and the tone can’t be manually altered like on a clavichord. I was surprised by your historical keyboard collection as I’m used to watching you as a pianist-how were you drawn towards owning a historical collection? I think it’s quite an investment!!!
Thank you for providing the details of where to find these pieces in Fischer's output. Most helpful!
THE MASTER RETURNS
Wonderful! So glad to see another video from you - keep them coming!
Great to see you back after all these years!! awesome stuff!
It's nice to hear Fisher played. You don't see too much of it but he did some great stuff. Very well done great little instrument. I guess you don't have split keys in the bass
Nice instrument! And the music is wonderful too! I also have a replica of a bentside spinet.
Luk, I saw you play your English spinet just now: very nice! Yours have more keys than mine, and bigger keys, too; the small size of mine makes it a challenge to play, as well as the short octave, but I like it very much. Keep up the good work.
Sorry, I misspelled your name, Luuk!
@@teafruitbat You are very welcome! Thank you for your nice reply and for the information.
Good luck with all you have to do and with the music!
Greetings,
Luuk
Quite the harmony in some of those arpeggios.
Good to see a new upload from you! Always a pleasure watching them. Aloha!
So glad to be back Sir!
Marvelous, as always. I admire your playing so much and am jealous of the variety of instruments.
I am absolutely in love with the epinette videos, and even tried to reach Jack Peters about them. I searched high and low for plans to no avail. Would you know if he is still making instruments, or has he retired?
Thank you for your kind comment. Jack has pretty much retired from making instruments, but I know that he still has that epinette that I recorded on several years ago (the one with all the flowers on the soundboard?). He may be willing to sell it. Have you tried e-mailing him at jpearlymusic@gmail.com? I'm going to talk to him today and ask him about it. Make him an offer! And expect to pay plenty for having it shipped to you, unless you are in the Seattle area and can come and pick it up....
You're back! And with a prelude and chaconne of all things!
Im glad you still posting videos :D
Hello, my dear friend, how are you?
Good to hear from you! I fear I have been remiss in keeping in touch with you. I hope you are doing OK---I will e-mail you very soon! Yours....Ryan
REPLICA.
I'll be Bach 🕶
This is J.K.F. Fischer's prelude and chaconne. It's not Bach.
