Sixty years one ago as a ten year old turning hay with a pitch fork I would never have imagined how hay would be turned in 2024. One thing has not changed, and that is the worry about getting it saved. Young Phil you mentioned the word "brave" that hasn't changed a person had to be brave to attempt to make a living at farming when I was turning hay as a child, but I think a person would have to be a damn sight braver in 2024.
35 years ago i turned hay with a pitch fork, because the tedder we had was great but it through alot into the hedges, back then that was gold, was bailed up in smalls and you were allowed on the top of the trailer of bailes , great memories

Remember making hay, the weather must be your friend for at least a week. The last time me and my dad made hade was the best hay I ever made! Keep up the good work
You need grass cut dry and then 5 sunny days to get good hay made.

Great throw from the samara tedder but I’d be a bit worried by the amount of matting on top she does & what gets hooked on the rotors? Spent a few too many summers turning plenty acres with Kuhn & pottinger. Pottinger at the time were definitely the best, it was a heavier machine than the Kuhn & I always thought that helped! kept rotors pretty clean & if driven right you’d rarely have bunching issues.

Evening all God!!! There certainly is a science to making hay ?!? Philip I know that you do but listen to Farther Phil. He knows more about the natural science of farming than what you will ever learn from a book. Simple put One gifted man. It’s times like this that I think about Uncle Ian. The farm is so full of life. My best to all of you, from Northern Italy.

We arsed about with New Holland d1000 big square baler for a few years here in the west of Scotland .the hay was never ready for it best thing we did with it was selling it and concentrated on the round balers

Haylage is nearly fit. Turn 3 times it will be good as hay if it rain. Best of luck if you get hay. I work on a farm one year he made small square bales haylage in September for horse stud and we made haylage in September i tink 2009 and turned out to be great feed for cows and cattle. 15 acers.

That Tedder is a great job , when I was young I used to be put on a Ford 4000 and a haybob for what seemed like weeks turning hay 😞
