    There is no "wrong" side for the spatula. You just change directions you slide the spatula from bottom => top to top => bottom and "magically" the rounded part works as intended.

    Locksmith here. The larger set is my go-to for all house lockout calls. Unless the deadbolt is locked too, these work in seconds about 80% of the time - faster than I could pick. One warning, the edges are so sharp on these that it's easy for fingers to get small cuts while wiggling them around in tight door frames.

    • @thelockpickinglebowski633

      @kerrykistler8653 4 года назад +2

      @@thelockpickinglebowski633 Like I said, 80% success rate. Although, in my experience, most deadlatch installations are incorrect to begin with. And many that are correct can be disabled by pulling the door closed sharply enough to allow the deadlatch to slide into the hole in the strike plate. I use these shim plates first because they are absolutely the quickest way to get through most KIKs - even the harder to pick like SmartLocks. It really is as fast at Bill shows - 5 to10 seconds and you're in. People gawp in disbelief that their door locks are really that easy to get through. If the door is just too tight, Lishi is next or several other bypass tools in by bag (bump keys, snap guns, etc). And picking too.

    When I have to let a customer back in on these easy low security doors, I often use something called the firefighter swipe tool, shove knife, or even just an old ID in a pinch. Same concept. These do look cool though. They do have something similar called the Zak Tool Gate Pass. I haven't had to much luck with those though.This set looks like it would work great on doors with no/improperly set antiloiding pin, doors with an exterior trim piece and no straight on access to the latch, or doors with a stronger spring that other methods would be difficult with. That being said, if shimming is not an option, there are lots of other non destructive ways to gain entry as well. The more skills, knowledge, and tools you have available, the more happy customers you have. For the door you showed, something called an under the door tool with the long rod and wire would also likely work as well.

    Most one way doors I've seen have a metal plate covering the latch area.

    • @sumduma55
      @sumduma55 4 года назад +4

      They open to the outside or pull to you when the plate is there. The stricker curve would be facing the opposite direction to use these.
      I've used guitar strings to open them if they are regular latches. I guess any flexible but somewhat still stiff wire small enough to fit in the crack of the jam would work. You need to put a bend in the wire once inserted and feed from the top. Once past the plate on the bottom, work the bend to bring it out where you can reach it. Then tension to the plate as you wiggle it a bit. I use pliers or sometimes chopsticks to get leverage and stop the wore from digging into your skin. Pull hard and toward the plate because when the wire passes by the latch, you want the plate on the door to open the door enough that it is past the latch hole and you can stop it from relatching.

    The door locking behind you thing made me remember something that happened to many probably 20 or so years ago at the First Interstate Bank Plaza in downtown Houston. It's a 71-story building and the elevators are such that there are express elevators to major floors where there are "sky lobbies" (34/35th and 58/59th floors) and then local elevators from those major floor to the intermediate floors. This was the first time I had ever been in that building (other than the ground floor) and I need to go to a office that was fairly high up. So, I took the express elevator up to the 58/59th floor lobby and since I was only a couple of floors away from where I needed to go, I figured that I would just take the stairs down to my destination instead of waiting on the intermediate floors elevator. BIG MISTAKE... Turns out that the doors automatically lock after you when you go into the stairway and the only way to get out of the stairway is to walk ALL THE WAY DOWN to the ground floor...

    A few comments / explanations from the home country of multipick.
    German (and I guess most european) apartment or front doors do have both, a latch and a bolt. The latch only has a handle from the inside, to open it, if the door is not fully locked. But there is usually no handle on the outside (exceptions exist of course).
    The bolt/lock is usable from both sides and also actuates the latch, so you actually can get in from the outside using the key, if that makes sense. Basically you turn the key (twice) to retract the bolt and then rotate another quarter rotation to pull back the latch.
    Contrary to fire escape doors, you (most often) cannot open the door only with the handle from the inside, if it is locked. You must first unlock it with the key (or knob) and then either use the key or the handle to operate the latch.
    So a rather common occurence here is that somebody forgot their keys inside and just closes the door from the outside, not beeing able to get back in. This is where locksmiths (or lock pickers) with these tools can, in a matter of seconds, open the door with (nearly) no damage to the door or lock.
    TFG means Türfallengleiter, which translates to door latch glider. There's also a kind of wire version of this called Türfallennadel (door latch needle/wire) which is much easier to carry around with, but a bit more difficult to operate.

    Last week the door shut behind me and I really panicked for a moment, luckily had the window open. I will surely take a good look at my door, hopefully one of these tools fit. Will get one of these tools, test it, then just hide it outside somewhere in the garbage box or whatever. I hate doors that don't have the opening handle on the outside, that's not what keeps thieves out...

  • @Leif_YT
    @Leif_YT 4 года назад

    In many European countries, especially here in Germany, these doors are common. In most cases where people need a locksmith, it's the typical scenario that they have their keys inside the apartment, and the door closes. That's why I always try to teach people how to open it themselves because most of the locksmith companies here try to rip people off. They drill the whole lock open and try to sell an overpriced lock rather than using such a simple tool to open the door without damage within seconds. A very simple thing that works most of the time is a piece of a thick pet bottle (like the coke bottles) cut to the size of a hand. It's easy and quick to get (even at night) and works usually pretty well.

    • @Melds
      @Melds 4 года назад

      Maglocks are bad. In a fire smoke and heat can obscure the IR sensor, and if the sensor fails you have people crashing into the door. Finally, if it's the only latching mechanism it fails open. A good deadlatch is much better. If doing access control, consider an electrified strike.

    5:20... While I agree with your choice of which you like better, as to the use on the one you like less if the lock is on the opposite side couldn't you use it the exact same but instead of starting from the bottom up start from the top down so the blade is at the right angle? I mean the bottom up on the left side would be the exact same as the top down on the right side with the only difference being a little bit harder to push the top to make room for it to slide in since you can't use your foot.

      @@bosnianbill I was about to make the same comment as Josh B, but realized he beat me to it. As for inserting the tool at the top of the door, you might want to use a short prying tool to get some space. You could use something like a credit card between the prying tool in the door to avoid damaging the paint or finish on the door. That might still leave a mark in the finish inside the doorjamb but in a spot that would be much less conspicuous.

    Funny enough I have used a decorators multi edge scraper to pop fire doors for legitimate business operators before and soon as they've seen me do it they've had me work on the weakness and signed up for key holding services with various companies

    Looking into purchasing new locks for perimeter doors. What lock do you have/recommend for your front door?

    What thickness are the door stops..the ones I have are 20 mm and the spatula does not slide as easy as the one you demonstrated on

    Can’t you use the spatula on a right side latch above the latch and pull down?

    Seems like such a obvious idea but never patented until now,a good walk paper scraper would probably make a good one of these ...

    Don't all fire doors open to the outside, so how would you put your foot to push the door.

    Would'nt a credit card or a piece of tin be a much cheaper alternative? And any spatula for 1$ could be shaped to work.

    Cool stuff. Couldn’t you just slide the spatula type tool downward instead of up getting the same result. On the opposite swinging in doors

    More stuff I have to have, that I'll probably never use.

    I was working at a guy's house who left and locked the door while I was getting tools form the tuck. I just pulled out a credit card and popped the lock. So I could finish the job. Felt like creap doing it but I was authorized to be in his home. So it was no big deal.
    Still, this kind of attack works on a lot of home locks without a deadbolt so don't trust just the handle lock.

    Ack, I was just looking at all of these category options... o_o - Trying to decide if it was worth upgrading from my plastic-y type shim sheets. Maybe? I haven't decided. Well anyways, it's always spooky when Bill reviews another thing I was ~just looking at~ yet again. Spooky I say!! Haha, nice "home review" anyways. Stay safe!

    Given that these are made of metal and could scratch the door and/or frame, I think that mica shims are better.

      As a hobbyist I tend to think the same. I believe they would have a place in a professional's kit, though - I somehow doubt they're going to break anytime soon!

    So Bill, what do you have if the door opens to the direction you are standing on? Towards you in other words? Thanks for the Uploads!
