There are a lot of CPU scores for the 18,3 posted on Geekbench, and they're typically in the mid-1700's single-score and upper 12,000's multi-core. The significantly lower scores posted in this review (1523, 10,619) aren't consistent with those.
The notch is not an issue for me. Like most of the time it will covered by the menu bar. This thing is a beast, it makes any windows laptop weak. So… yeah..

None of those newer, much faster cards fit into the older much slower SD slots. So, yes indeed, we do need a dongle. Hasn’t pretty much every laptop used 720p webcams? However, Window’s Hello isn’t a secure facial recognition. Plus, the other sensors that have to house the Face ID have more room in the iPhone that a MacBook Pro lid. Maybe in a year or two or sometime down the line, they’ll put Face ID, but it’s about the implementation of it that’s tricky given that you don’t have to pick up your laptop to activate Face ID, but rather your face is always in view of the screen. Unless they do away with Touch ID altogether 🤷♂️? Technically, this is a first gen model for the Pro lineup. Apple’s gotta figure ways to improve. Can’t throw everything in there; that would make it difficult to improve enough to upgrade later.

based on how much multitasking you want to do. if you are someone who wants 50+ tabs on chrome open while you use video editing programs or other programs you will want to go higher in ram like 16gb or more. if you are a person who never wants to close programs i would go as high as possible. also if you are doing virtual machines i would also max it out if you can. computers overall i typically never recommend 8gb for anyone and 16gb is the base i would ever recommend for any tasks. if you do 1 task at a time and are good about closing tabs and closing unused programs 16gb or the base of a model would be fine.
If you’re asking this question - you will be fine with 16GB of ram. 8GB is fine for most needs with M1 (even lots of browser tabs). In MacOS, 16GB will be more than enough unless you’re editing raw pictures or editing very high bitrate videos, rendering complex 3D models, etc, etc
@@jamiestevenson2000 i disagree about 8gb of ram, especially on m1, all the big time youtubers were saying the base model mac mini was good for even video editors and browsing the web. so i bought the hype got the base model mac mini on m1 and 8gb of ram. 15 tabs on firefox and discord being open and watching youtube maxed out the 8gb of ram on m1. that is horrible performance. all computers should be 16gb minimum. i was using swap with just 15 tabs and discord thats insane. so i figured maybe it was because fo firefox and used safari same thing. so all the youtubers straight up did not look at ram pressure or swap when doing their tests. if you dont care about using swap or high ram pressure sure it works.

I’ll bet you it can. Crysis is 10 year old tech anyway. I’d like to see these run Microsoft Flight Simulator
@@kubemaster lol it wouldn't run Crysis. Unless it's the remastered trilogy, but not the original.
@@1meen1 Meaning Crysis is overblown sloppy code. I don’t see that being an M1 chip problem. At the end of the day, Crysis is a 10 year old shooter.
I don’t think it can play much games mainly because it’s a ARM chip, but I know Rosetta or whatever it’s called helps it run native apps tho
Just a reminder that the screen is taller than the older models so the notch is only eating up menu bar space, not space for any content. You still have more screen real estate
Which one would be best for a student the 14 inch or the 16 inch
Great Review!!
Are the speakers better than the HomePod mini?
0:56 - I love Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
There are a lot of CPU scores for the 18,3 posted on Geekbench, and they're typically in the mid-1700's single-score and upper 12,000's multi-core. The significantly lower scores posted in this review (1523, 10,619) aren't consistent with those.
Agreed - these scores are way below par.

High Variable Refresh Rate Laptops and Monitors have been around for almost half a decade... Neither Apple nor Microsoft are "first" in this regard.
Was thinking the same. Almost seemed like the reviewer is new to these devices.
How does the 16 inch MacBook pro compare to Dell XPS 17?
I’m a professional cinematographer & I’m super exited to not have to throw my MacBook into the freezer for 10 minutes anymore!
Didn’t realize this was even a thing
LOL
Great products but sadly the base 1999 model costs 2600 in my country
The notch is not an issue for me. Like most of the time it will covered by the menu bar. This thing is a beast, it makes any windows laptop weak. So… yeah..
Should I get a m1x 16inch if I already have a M1 pro from 2020? Is it that big of an upgrade?
I'm a programmer, I went for the 14". I went overboard with the 24 gpu core max, I probably could have gotten away with the 16 core but honestly, I feel like that boost in performance was worth the $200 since I went with 32gb of memory anyway.
14 or 16 is my current problem I’m trying to solve 😅
Exactly my thoughts. Couldn’t justify the 24 to 32 core jump though
Why go for the binned chip? Might as well have spent the extra $$ on 32core
@@sugaashow Because that was my budget. And honestly, I could have lived with the base 14". It would have done everything I needed it to do plus a lot. I just decided to get a little bit of extra performance to play with.
@@TheHronar bud what extra performance to play with? You won't even get any hiccups with the regular M1 with your work flow 😂
Argh, we run the benchmarks but won't show what they are and on which device,
Really nice review, thanks for this video.
What’s jronidc about that stupid SD slot, is that as high end laptops (and I did order a 32 core 2TB 16” model), they don’t offer the oroper slot for those of us at the higher end of photo use, wher everything is moving to Express B, or for Sony Express A, of Fast. None of those newer, much faster cards fit into the older much slower SD slots. So, yes indeed, we do need a dongle.
Hasn’t pretty much every laptop used 720p webcams? Maybe it should be pointed out that it wasn’t just Apple.
You think the 16 inch 16GB is good to edit 4K videos upto 4 layers? Please advise.
Even the M1 with 16GB can do that, so yes, it should be all good.
@@Gokhanaj Thank you... 😊
Go watch iJustine's video, they do some work with raw canon 8k video on the base 14".
@@Ddonaldson9 Woah! I just did... I'm going with the 16 inch base model then... :-)
@@smkaarthikeyan I'm really waiting for the LTT review but from what I can tell, these new chips are absolute beasts. Any comparisons to standard cpu/gpu/ram specs are just invalid. I don't live in this professional world myself but these really do look to be off-the-charts powerful in the real world.
BUT HOW DOES THE MOUSE WORK WHEN GOING THROUGH THE NOTCH
Goes right through
Excellent review. Bought the M1 MBP last year so I’m not looking to upgrade until about 2025z
nice review, homie
Legit review. 14” all day unless 5lb computer is worth lugging around for your workflow. I got the maxed out 14 and I couldn’t be happier. Spent the $ to increase the speed of workflow and I just made my first 3D animated render yesterday 🙌
I’m already imagining 5 years from now not having to wait for render time.. it will be worth another $3500 for sure.. maximize what you have rn and you won’t be disappointed. It’s a great time to take advantage of this technology!
Looking good!
You like MagSafe cause now it doesn't use up a valuable USB-C port for charging. But adding a MagSafe connector cost you one USB-C port (from 4 to 3). So now there is just a port that can only do charging and not anything else, unlike the old USB-C port.
Physical space yes, but there is no guarantee the machine could actually run 4 if they could fit it there.
@@MissyMalaprop exactly. The bandwidth from the previous 4th TB3/USB4 port is now used for the HDMI and SD card ports. it’s a trade off, but you’re not getting less - just different.
i love the 14" physical size and weight but i want the 16" screen...what you commenters leaning towards?
Same here but for 160 Euro more I decided to go with the bigger screen. I think the real estate on the go will be pretty nice.
@@yummypugs at the realistic combination i would get in the 14" it's exactly the same price in the 16" (half storage)...for me the 14" is the best package for a "portable" laptop but the extra battery and screen real estate is pulling me to the 16"....most of the time im connected to a larger 27" monitor so size is not so much a need but a luxury
Can you run cyber punk 77 on it?
can you set the screen to 120hz all the time?
I don't think so, you can set it to 24, 30, and 60hz I believe. Probably not a good idea to keep it on 120hz anyways, it will just waste battery life. It should automatically become 120hz when there's motion.
I’ve had a 15inc Mac book pro since 2015 I waited to upgrade to the bigger 16inc but I’m more convinced with 14inch now that I’m a programmer 👨🏽💻 🤔 decisions decisions
I’m thinking 14 inch too, I have a 16 inch now

the notch is wrapped in with the tool bar menu bar so what's the big deal? it gives you more room and you cannot notice it much....shouldnt be a big deal at all...they actually moved the bar and wrapped it around the front camera and made more room. its a great idea
I picked up the 16 inch MAX, I can't wait to get it.
How do you decide how much unified memory one needs?
based on how much multitasking you want to do. if you are someone who wants 50+ tabs on chrome open while you use video editing programs or other programs you will want to go higher in ram like 16gb or more. if you are a person who never wants to close programs i would go as high as possible. also if you are doing virtual machines i would also max it out if you can. computers overall i typically never recommend 8gb for anyone and 16gb is the base i would ever recommend for any tasks. if you do 1 task at a time and are good about closing tabs and closing unused programs 16gb or the base of a model would be fine.
Can i call it a notchbook? Ues
But is it powerful and is suitable as my daily driver?
Gorgeous powerful machines but maybe im wait till next year for a little price drop. Stick with my intel 2019 touch bar mbp 😬
Something nobody is talking about in regards to Face ID, is that most people that will buy this MacBook Pro already own an Apple Watch. My Mac automatically unlocks when it detects my Apple Watch which is light years easier than both Face and Touch ID.

How does this handle Reelsteady processing, Davinci Resolve?

Idk why the notch is such a big deal to people, I’d prefer a notch than a larger bezel at the top
You don't need more than 16GB RAM if dealing with big video files. I can edit 8K Raw footage at 24fps on the Macbook Air 16GB. I can't imagine what's possible on the Pro version.
Seven 8K streams in parallell in ProRes while whatever you want is going on in the background. Not a single dropped frame .

Engadget should be ashamed putting this poor reviewer in the position that they put him in... looking bad. Common sense went out the window with this review. Why are you doing synthetic benchmarks... with a brand new chip??? If you are going to review these.. you need to benchmark them against the previous Intel/AMD models... I want to see if Apple's apps like (Final Cut, Logic, etc.) work great with it. People are looking to find out if they are worth the upgrade. You said it yourself, these have been a long time coming... well show us stuff!!!
Ohhh... I know why??? Cause you have to be one of the first to review... gotta get those clicks... at the expense of a quality, thorough review.
The webcam sucks, see how it’s struggling to handle dynamics range
My mbp still has a DVD drive.
Are you insane? Even an old Intel machine is capable of doing heavy duty audio work. The M1 easily handles heavy duty video plus audio work easily.
I will wait for no notch model.
It’s not even a big deal. 🤦♂️ Literally screen extension and the menu bar sits there where it would have take space on your screen anyway.
I’m currently working with a 15” MBP 2013, really overthinking if i should go for the 14” or 16”🤨 Im using it for Logic, but the resolution is so high compared to my current MacBook and its only as a hobby. any tips?
Have you updated ram and SSD? Logic works quite well on mine unless I add a heap of plugins
