  • Hello and Welcome to another Budget Builds Video where today we'll be seeing if cheap 775 Builds are actually still worth it, using the only method I know....By Building one. This one is exactly what youd expect with off ebay parts, same as when I did that 1155 SFF PC....So why dotn we see if this is stil la viable option. If I recommend it....and Overall if you should still try out 775 for cheap PC Build.

    I think it is really dependent upon luck and who is letting go things, if you can get you an old pc that works given away, all you might need is a new Hard Drive or PSU.

      I would check if there is a college surplus shop in your area, I've still seen those old HP machines come through the one near me and they are usually anywhere from $20-50USD depending on if they bothered to include a hard drive or install an OS. (I prefer the ones without an OS since Xubuntu runs much better on them than Windows anyhow)

    Great video and good take on the 775 and its value. The platform is in a interesting spot. For budget builds, Sandy Bridge offers better value and if you use a quad for Retro gaming, people in forums will complain as it's too modern :D

    • @Wushu-viking
      @Wushu-viking 5 лет назад +33

      The good thing about these LGA 775, is that you "practically" can get these for free (or for peanuts). I remember buying a 2nd hand workstation XV4600 HP PC (excellent quality with a quality Delta PSU!) Q9400, 4 GB DDR2-800, for about 20$. Put in a HD 6850 (also 20$) and extra 2 GB DDR2-800, which I had in my inventory, Added a quality 128 GB SSD (30$). Installed Win 10. Here is a 70$ quality tower that played Fortnite at medium totally playable. A Budget build I did for a 10 year old kid. I agree Sandy bridge are way better for modern use, but can't compete with that price you can snatch the good old LGA 775 for :)

      When you can use an Pentium 4 540J and PCX5750 on the same motherboard you run a Xeon E5450 and GTX 970, its probably *the* perfect platform for retro gaming. Especially since some motherboards have a FDD connector due to the demand from those still using Windows XP.

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab 5 лет назад +5

      Dabombinable Mi Yea, and fast Core 2 Duo will work great wtth Windows XP as well, no need for a Quad. I really dig the LGA 775 platform at the moment, it's cheap fun, especially the LGA 771 modded CPUs. It works great for a Steam / GOG deals box, running older, but not really retro games, really well.

      If you can't manage with a system built around an Ivy Bridge chipset (preferably a core i5) at 1080p medium and *at least* 30fps with modern games, then I'm fairly certain it's the developer's fault for not optimizing properly (or the publisher for pushing the game out too soon, depends on how you look at it). And I would say this counts as "older hardware", since this is hardware from like 2012.
      But keep in mind I'm including an entry-level GPU in the mix, current or up to two generations old.

    A tip to those who want the i5 2400 but can't find one (For what ever reason), look for a i5 2320, as those are cheaper, have the same core count and are only slower by .1GHz/100MHz. Coming from personal experience, it works well for 1155 builds. I have a i5 2400 in my system, but I have my 2320 on standby just in case my 2400 dies for what ever reason. NOTE: When I went and looked at used prices for the two chips, the 2320 was $4 (USD) cheaper than the 2400. So if you're REALLY strapped for cash, it might be in your interest to look at that.

    • @darcosanti
      @darcosanti 5 лет назад

      i5 2400 will be just fine for gaming med/high next 5-6 years because it wouldn`t be botlleneck to your system. You can pair it with nvidia 1060 4GB or stronger GPU and it is very, very good combination for serious gaming. ruclips.net/video/6v3pjF2v5Bs/видео.html

    It'd be interesting to see a slightly upped budget using the xeon 771 to 775 mod and a board with ddr3 compatibility. With some luck, you may be able to keep it relatively close to your initial budget in this video, while smoothing out the limiting factors: the cpu and ram speed. That being said this is awesome man! I'm honestly surprised the PC worked as good as it did :) Looking forward to more content!

      Came here to suggest the same idea! Currently running an OEM MSI 7225 mobo that I 771/775 modded with a Xeon X5460. Ram is my biggest ball and chain. Only allows for 4gb of 800 MHZ of DDR2. GPU is XFX Radeon HD 7850 2gb. It’s not incredible. However, it is solid enough. Currently have a XFX RX 470 XXX dual fan 4gb gpu on the way. That is the start of my next eventual build. I’ll always respect the LGA 775 layout. It’s what got me here.

      Yeah the Core 2 era is a nice ground for old legacy Windows XP builds - the Core i series can be done but may have issues (my old school downgraded 1st gen i3 Windows 7 laptops once to XP, so it fitted in with the rest of their system - goodness knows how they found suitable drivers!) and earlier than Core 2, you could have issues with performance, as you're then going into the era of single core processors. The Fujitsu Lifebook E8020 laptop that I had, had a Pentium M 760 (I think) in it, which was only single core, and ran The Sims quite badly.

    For around the same price point I personally got:
    A Dell Optiplex 790 for $15 which had
    ~ i5-2400 (LGA 1155 @ 3.4ghz; Quad-core)
    ~ 8gb DDR3 (1x4gb & 2x2gb 1333hz DDR3)
    ~ 1tb HDD (2 500gb HDDs, not raided sadly)
    ~ And an ATI RADEON HD 5450 (Though the port was smashed because they tried to use the wrong cable for it.)
    ~ (Plus of course, Motherboard, Heatsink, CD/DVD, Case, and PSU)
    Then went and bought GT 630 (Crappy GPU but it'll do for now), for about 10ish bucks.
    For basically 25 dollars I'd say that is pretty good.
    *Edit*
    I have added 2gb of DDR3 ram and an SSD to it as well.
    Added about 30 more dollars to the total, however, even without it, the PC is still decent for the price.

    If you can do it for super cheap, YEAHHH!! Last year I scored a 775 dell for 8 bucks which had the motherboard, 4GB of DDR2, q6600, good enough case, etc. All I did was throw a cheapo PSU in I had on hand and I bought a 560ti for 30$ and it's a monster at 38$. If you wanna count the PSU in the cost (which is fair), it's from another tower I got for 8 so the adjusted price would be 46$.
